In this episode of SpaceTime, we uncover some of the most exciting discoveries and developments in the universe, including the detection of the brightest fast radio burst ever observed, the New Horizons spacecraft's record-setting hibernation, and an innovative method for generating oxygen in space.Brightest Fast Radio Burst DetectedAstronomers have identified what is being hailed as the brightest fast radio burst (FRB) ever recorded. Catalogued as FRB 2025 0316A, this extraordinary flash of energy was detected 130 million light years away in the spiral galaxy NGC 4141. The burst's unprecedented brightness and proximity provide scientists with a unique opportunity to study its origins and the environment surrounding it, potentially shedding light on the enigmatic sources of these fleeting cosmic phenomena.New Horizons Enters Record HibernationNASA's New Horizons spacecraft has officially begun a record-setting hibernation period as it journeys through the Kuiper Belt, now over 9.2 billion kilometres from Earth. This hibernation will last until June 2026, surpassing its previous record of 273 days. Despite being in hibernation, the spacecraft will continue to collect valuable data on charged particles and dust in the outer heliosphere, which will be transmitted back to Earth upon reactivation.Revolutionary Oxygen Generation in SpaceIn a significant advancement for future space missions, scientists have developed a new method for generating oxygen in space using neodymium magnets to enhance the electrolysis process. This innovative approach simplifies the extraction of oxygen bubbles from water, potentially replacing complex systems currently used in microgravity environments. By leveraging magnetic forces, this technique could improve the efficiency and reliability of oxygen production for astronauts.www.spacetimewithstuartgary.com✍️ Episode ReferencesAstrophysical Journal Lettershttps://iopscience.iop.org/journal/2041-8205NASAhttps://www.nasa.gov/Nature Chemistryhttps://www.nature.com/nchem/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/spacetime-space-astronomy--2458531/support.Brightest Fast Radio Burst DetectedNew Horizons Enters Record HibernationRevolutionary Oxygen Generation in Space
There is no more shakespearean parable of the tragic rise and fall of the postwar American meritocratic elite than Robert Strange McNamara. War hero, Harvard Business School, head of Ford, begged by JFK to take a role - any role - in Camelot. Then came the equally meteoric fall as JFK and then LBJ's Secretary of Defense - Vietnam and all its death and deceit. With his brother William, Philip Taubman has written about what he calls McNamara's “double life” in his new biography, McNamara At War. In this “new history”, they uncover new documents showing that McNamara was privately telling his aide John McNaughton in April 1966 - just nine months after advocating for massive escalation - that he "wanted to bring the boys home so bad I can hardly stand it." Yet this analytic whiz-kid, a poetry loving smart machine in a grey suit, continued prosecuting this unwinnable war for nearly two more years. The Taubmans suggest, therefore, that the catastrophic American defeat in Vietnam wasn't simply a military failure. It was a defeat of the entire postwar American technocratic meritocracy represented, above all, by the tragic double life of Robert Strange McNamara.1. Institutional Loyalty Can Override Moral Judgment McNamara's "contorted loyalty" to LBJ and the presidency led him to continue prosecuting a war he privately knew was unwinnable. His defense was that cabinet members serve the president, not some "higher calling" - yet the actual oath of office mentions defending the Constitution, not the president.2. Technical Brilliance Doesn't Guarantee Moral Leadership The "whiz kids" represented a new technocratic approach to governance based on data analysis and corporate efficiency. Yet when faced with Vietnam's moral complexities, these analytical skills became tools for prolonging catastrophe rather than preventing it.3. Elite Institutions May Inadequately Prepare Leaders for Ethical Dilemmas McNamara's stellar credentials - Berkeley, Harvard Business School, Ford presidency - represented the pinnacle of American meritocracy. But this system apparently failed to develop his capacity to act on moral conviction when it conflicted with institutional pressure.4. The "Double Life" Problem in High-Stakes Decision Making The gap between McNamara's private knowledge (war unwinnable by late 1965) and public actions (continued escalation through 1968) suggests a psychological split that may be endemic to powerful positions where personal judgment conflicts with role expectations.5. Personal Character Flaws Amplified by Power McNamara's failures weren't limited to Vietnam - his treatment of his dying wife, his emotional manipulation by LBJ, and his suppression of his own moral compass suggest character weaknesses that became magnified and consequential when combined with immense institutional power.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. More than 70 student entrepreneurs from nine Irish universities gathered at Munster Technological University (MTU) Bishopstown Campus on Thursday, 21st August to showcase innovative businesses developed during the prestigious Student Inc. 2025 summer programme. The 13-week immersive entrepreneurship programme, now in its 12th year, is led by MTU and backed both internationally and by the Higher Education Authority (HEA) and equips students with the skills, funding, and mentorship to transform their ideas into viable businesses. Students received €4,000 in seed funding, intensive training, and the opportunity to work in campus incubators, alongside established entrepreneurs. A hybrid delivery model enabled nationwide participation with students benefiting from world-class mentorship online, while still being connected to their home campuses. In addition to MTU, this year's group included students from Atlantic Technological University (ATU), South East Technological University (SETU), Technological University of the Shannon (TUS), University College Cork (UCC), University of Limerick (UL), Mary Immaculate College (MIC), Dundalk Institute of Technology (DKIT), and Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT). The programme culminated in a final Showcase with over 200 attendees, where each student was given the opportunity to present their businesses to judges, trainers, mentors, industry professionals, investors, and peers. The range of businesses showcased was diverse and spread across a variety of sectors, including the Creative sector, Biomedical devices, career development apps, AI-assisted customer service platforms, food products, films, and games, to mention a few. At the showcase, awards were given for Best Poster and Best Pitch, which included: Sam McGrath from SETU for his business, Draft Drinks Beverage Dispenser; Natasha Myers from MTU for her board game BrightSparks; and Ali Zeeshan from TUS for his business, which is a sustained release drug for methane mitigation. Commenting on the programme, President of MTU, Professor Maggie Cusack, said: "Student Inc. is more than just developing businesses; it develops mindsets, attitudes, and skill sets, and students with these skills are in high demand by future employers." Carole O'Leary, Programme Manager of Student Inc. at MTU, added: "Student Inc. continues to demonstrate the strength of student entrepreneurship in Ireland. This year's showcase highlighted the creativity and ambition of our students, who transformed early-stage ideas into fully developed business plans in just 13 weeks. I want to warmly congratulate the award winners and commend every participant for their hard work and determination. We are especially proud that a number of this year's cohort have already been accepted onto the New Frontiers programme, proving the invaluable pipeline that student entrepreneurship initiatives like Student Inc. provide to both regional and national innovation supports." Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump issued an executive order slapping India with a 25 percent special tariff due to its purchases of Russian oil. This surprise measure raised the total tariff on Indian exports to the United States to 50 percent—among the highest rates imposed by the United States on any country in the world. But India is not just “any country.” Over the last quarter-century, it has emerged as one of America's most valuable strategic partners. Trump's tariff move has plunged the bilateral relationship into crisis, raising difficult questions about the future of both U.S. and Indian foreign policy.Grand Tamasha emerged from its summer hiatus for an emergency episode to make sense of these developments and their global ramifications. For this special episode, Milan is joined by Grand Tamasha regulars, Sadanand Dhume of the American Enterprise Institute and the Wall Street Journal and Tanvi Madan of the Brookings Institution. The trio discuss the drivers behind Trump's decision, India's response to the crisis, and the future of India's policy of “multi-alignment.” Plus, the two discuss the U.S. government's 180-degree turn on Pakistan and the prospects for an amicable resolution of the U.S.-India trade spat by summer's end.Episode notes:1. Antimatter may power more than just starships. It might also have helped rev up the BOAT – an exploding star nicknamed “the Brightest Of All Time.” It was seen in October of 2022, in Sagitta, the arrow. Right now, the constellation is in the east at nightfall. The event was a gamma-ray burst – a stellar explosion that aimed “jets” of gamma rays in our direction. It was by far the most powerful cosmic event ever seen. It produced more energy in one second than the Sun will generate in its entire lifetime of more than 10 billion years. It was so powerful, in fact, that it created minor disturbances in Earth’s upper atmosphere – even though it was more than two billion light-years away. The outburst probably happened when a star many times the mass of the Sun died. Its core collapsed to form a black hole, while its outer layers blasted into space as a supernova. As the star died, superheated gas spiraled around the black hole. Magnetic fields directed some of that material into space from the star’s poles. Earth lined up along one of those beams, which is why we saw the outburst of gamma rays. A recent study says that an odd feature recorded during the outburst might have been produced when electrons and their antimatter counterparts rammed together and destroyed each other. That would have added to the energy of the blast – helping make the gamma-ray burst the BOAT – the Brightest of All Time. Script by Damond Benningfield
