In this chat, we get to meet My Brightest Diamond - aka: Shara Nova. I got to speak with Shara surrounding the release of her newest MBD record, called Fight the Real Terror. In this discussion, she and I go deep into this album - its themes, its stark minimalism, and its conception, which was borne largely by the loss of the great Sinead O'Connor. Shara had a deep affinity for Sinead's work both musically and politically, and I speak with her about how Sinead's voice (and I mean that in all shadings of the word) has inspired her own work and her own life, as an artist, a human, and an activist. It's a great talk with a great artist (and someone who I've been listening to for virtually my whole music-listening life). Thank you for listening.
My Brightest Diamond is the project led by singer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and composer Shara Nova (formerly Worden), who has continued to weave her own way through pop, experimental and classical worlds. Her latest, Fight The Real Terror, strips things down to just Shara and her guitar, and is full of the raw emotion that erupted from her upon learning about Sinéad O'Connor's passing in 2023. Shara Nova plays some of these new My Brightest Diamond songs, in-studio, and wields an autoharp besides. Set list: 1. Fight the Real Terror 2. Safe House 3. Have You Ever Seen An Angel

Speech has rhythm, repetition, pace. Voice overs have style, tone, pitch. There's a reason why so many singers are voice actors, and Alessandra is a perfect example! As an incredible multi-instrumentalist, recording engineer, producers, she brings music to the mic whether it's on Jazz vocals or a Starbucks commercial. Alessandra is all things creative. A voice actor, vocalist, bass player and producer. From creating characters at the age of three, to singing in front of large groups at thirteen, she knew her place was on stage, in the studio, and on camera. Growing up in a musical family helped, as weekends were spent having family jam sessions. Soon after her completing degree in studio music, she landed a gig singing with Ben Folds and the Pittsburgh Symphony, sang for Radio City Music Hall as a Rockette, and sang on My Brightest Diamond's album “This is My Hand.” Studio singing quickly opened up the doors for her as a voice actor, with clients such as Google, Dove, Starbucks, Verizon, LEGO, Target, Cinnabon, Hello Fresh, Corona, Ketel One Vodka, Hasbro, Amazon, Wingstop, Sonic, Santander Bank, iHeartRadio and many others. Shara Nova, the mastermind behind My Brightest Diamond, serves up elegantly crafted songs with mathematical precision and emotional heft. That's what you'll hear when My Brightest Diamond takes the tiny stage as part of KCRW's School Night at Bardot tonight. One song we hope to hear is “Black Sheep,” because it struts in like modern cabaret. Be sure to wait for the last bit at the very end to wipe away any Monday blues.
Shara Nova, a classically trained vocalist and self-taught multi-instrumentalist who records dazzling, shapeshifting music as My Brightest Diamond, has always felt like an outsider. Over the course of many albums, she has resisted the conventions of genre, blending elements of rock, art pop, and chamber music into a sound totally her own. Her baroque chamber p'opera “You Us We All” premiered in the US in October 2015 at BAM Next Wave Festival. With co-composer and performer Helga Davis, Nova created a four-screen film entitled “Ocean Body,” along with director Mark DeChiazza, which premiered at The Momentary in August 2021, shortly followed by the premiere of “Infinite Movement,” her baroque masque for 100 musicians, set to text by artist Matthew Ritchie, which premiered at The University of North Texas in November 2021.Ms. Nova is the featured singer on “The Blue Hour” with the string orchestra A Far Cry and co-composers Rachel Grimes, Angélica Negrón, Sarah Kirkland Snider and Caroline Shaw on Nonesuch Records (Sept ‘22). A number of music composers, including Sarah Kirkland Snider, Bryce and Aaron Dessner, Steve Mackey and David Lang have created works specifically for her voice. Big Red Machine - "Phoenix (feat. Fleet Foxes & Anaïs Mitchell)" from the 2021 album How Long Do You Think It's Gonna Last? on 37d03d. Last month, The National's Aaron Dessner and Bon Iver's Justin Vernon released their second album under the name Big Red Machine, titled How Long Do You Think It's Gonna Last?. The album features a heavyweight line-up of guests, including Taylor Swift, Sharon Van Etten, This Is The Kit, Ben Howard, Naeem, Lisa Hannigan, My Brightest Diamond's Shara Nova, and on today's Song of the Day, Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes and Tony Award-winning singer/songwriter Anaïs Mitchell. "'Phoenix' was one of the last songs we wrote for this record," Dessner says via a press release. "I was thinking about The Band and the Grateful Dead... maybe imagining this Big Red Machine album was some version of The Last Waltz. Justin first heard it while driving and immediately the chorus melody came into his head. I shared the sketch with Robin Pecknold, who I've been a fan of forever and who I'd been dreaming would join us on this record. Robin wrote the verses and pre chorus as a kind of dialogue with Justin, recalling a conversation they once had backstage in Phoenix. Later Anais wrote words to the chorus and The Westerlies added their magic to the instrumental. JT Bates rumbles around in rare form on the drums on this song. I think it's what I always imagined Big Red Machine would sound like." Pecknold adds, “It was a high, high honor to work on this song, and beyond that it was a really interesting creative challenge. Justin's vocals and the beautiful chorus were already in place before I got my hands on it, so I felt my job melodically and lyrically was to set his entrance up in the best possible way. I felt like a pilgrim putting questions to an elusive sage, not needing clear answers, but happy for the chance to ask.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Shara Nova releases exquisitely produced unclassifiable music as My Brightest Diamond. Depending on the track, her music sounds at home on the dance floor or the concert hall. In this episode she talks to Katy about embracing dance despite growing up Pentecostal, divorce, and navigating her own terrain as a musician that embraces her training as a classical musician and her fascination for electronic sounds. https://www.mybrightestdiamond.com/ https://www.npr.org/2014/09/16/348766101/shara-worden-on-q2s-spaces Learn more about your ad choices. We Quaran-Team Up with our boys, The Spook House Podcast for this week's episode. Please find them at https://www.instagram.com/thespookhousepodcast and https://thespookhousepodcast.bigcartel.com/ The film is Hereditary, you know that delightful little family movie. Oh, whoops, wrong "D" word, I meant devastating! After Ari Aster's ambitious student films, The Strange Thing About the Johnsons and, Munchausen, he made his feature film debut with this film. Originally conceived as a typical family drama, he added demons and kings from hell for kicks. The film stars Toni Collette (Krampus, Knives Out). I cannot stress this enough... SHE IS THE ENTIRE MOVIE! If it was not for her gripping acting and reaction to the events of the film, truly I think the rest of it would be meaningless. Her husband is played by Gabriel Byrne (The Usual Suspects) who is clearly struggling with his wife's descent into madness. Their son is played by Alex Wolff, who went full method in his performance. He refused to be addressed as anything but Peter for the two months of filming and did not introduce himself to his cast mates until production was over. Lastly, I would just lose my head if I did not mention Milly Shapiro, who plays the tragic Charlie, who has never really had an identity of her own, as she was a vessel for the demon king, Paimon. Makeup was designed by Steve Newburn, who indicated that the *ahem* scene, was originally much gnarlier. We'll explain why and how on the show. The music was by Colin Stetson. He's collaborated with a few bands you may have heard of, basically ALL OF THEM: Tom Waits, Arcade Fire, TV on the Radio, Feist, Bon Iver, Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, Sinéad O'Connor, The National, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, BADBADNOTGOOD, Fink, Animal Collective, LCD Soundsystem, Hamid Drake, David Byrne, Bill Laswell, Evan Parker, Jolie Holland, The Chemical Brothers, Shahzad Ismaily, My Brightest Diamond, Angélique Kidjo, Kevin Devine, David Gilmour, Anthony Braxton, and Beanie Burnett. Onward and upward, preachers! It's Ascension Day (if you transfer that festival from Thursday to Sunday... otherwise it is 7 Easter A)! We're talking Christ's above-it-all authority. We're talking praise and adoration for Jesus and his church. We're talking the footprint Jesus left on earth. This week's mixtape tracks are brought to you by The Call and My Brightest Diamond.
On the night of Kelly Cochran's wedding, her husband Jason forced her to agree to a pact: That if she ever cheated on him, she'd have to kill the man she cheated with. That pact would result in the deaths of at least 9 people. For more information: www.truecrimebullshit.com To support the show: www.patreon.com/truecrimebs Written, researched, edited, and produced by Josh Hallmark. Alessandra Levy is a talented professional voiceover artist, actor, musician, and music producer. She's recorded spots for businesses like Google, Amazon, Hasbro, HelloFresh and many more and has performed with Ben Folds and the Pittsburgh Symphony, sang for Radio City Music Hall as a Rockette, and was on My Brightest Diamond’s album “This is My Hand.” In this episode, Alessandra talks all about freelance life and the hustle it takes to succeed in a competitive industry. She's worked every job imaginable, had to deal with health issues, and still has made a successful niche for herself. We talk a lot about how being a freelancer IS running a business. Our conversation includes gems of knowledge for any creative or freelancer, not just for entertainers. 00:03:20: What is Alessandra's job and where does she work? 00:06:12: What was it like quitting a steady full time job to be a full time musician and voice actor? What has her career trajectory looked like to this point? (Hint: everything from doing in-store demos at Costco to singing for the Rockettes to background extra work in film and tv shows). 00:29:00: Did she go to school for what she's doing now? 00:38:05: What is freelance performer/musician life like - how do you find jobs? Through an agent? Through Craigslist? 00:41:00: Unions - how do you get in a union and get that sweet, sweet union pay and healthcare? 00:44:38: How does a voice artist audition - in person, or online? 00:54:00: What's the coolest/most exciting job she's ever worked on? Is she ever asked to sound like someone else - a famous actor, for example? 01:05:28: Setting rates - how does she know what to charge? How has her pricing and her money mindset changed since her business has grown? 01:12:00: Does she create her own characters, or is she told what the client wants? 01:18:00: How do she and her husband (also a self-employed person) get health insurance with no 9-5 job? What does a voice actor do when they have a sore throat? 01:29:00: Our back to the future segment - what advice would Alessandra give her younger self? 01:44:22: Our day in the life segment - what does a day-to-day look like for a voice actor and musician? 02:00:00: Listener Questions: how do you get started in the industry if you have no experience? 02:10:00: Quick Answer - Alessandra's favorite books, TV shows, and movies.

“I’ve always been a proponent of not making the same record twice,” Holly Miranda says. “Some people find a niche and go with that, but I need to try something different every time.” That’s more than apparent on Mutual Horse, Miranda’s third release for Dangerbird Records, out February 23rd. The album, Miranda’s fourth full-length solo release, is more than just an artistic step forward, it’s a whole new way for her to make music. “This really is the most collaborative record I’ve ever done,” she says. “It’s first time I’ve shared so much of the writing and the production, the meat and bones of making an album.” With support from a stellar circle of players – including My Brightest Diamond’s Shara Nova, TV On The Radio’s Kyp Malone, Grandaddy/Modest Mouse’s Jim Fairchild and Built To Spill’s Matthew Morgan amongst others – it’s Miranda’s astonishing singing vocal that is set free, elevating this collection of songs as no one else could. An instrument which can shift from a barely-there whisper to a soaring wail that cracks open the sky, Holly’s voice is startling from the moment it emerges on Mutual Horse. This record finds Holly bridging the gap between 2010’s experimental synth laden release The Magician’s Private Library and 2015’s stripped-back, soulful self-titled record. Miranda takes an honest and intimate approach, while maintaining her sense of humor amidst sonic explorations. The tracks run the gamut from the sultry, driving “On the Radio,” to a cover of Crazy Horse’s “When Your Lonely Heart Breaks,” and the delicate “Sing Like,” inspired by Miranda’s mother; an intimate clip of her singing while pregnant with Holly follows the song. www.hollymiranda.com getthefunkoutshow.kuci.org

Set list: "Another Chance" "Rising Star" - interview - "A Million Pearls" "Champagne" When it comes to musical trades, it seems like Shara Nova has set out to prove that she can be jack of all trades, master of… all. With an upbringing surrounded by evangelical music followed by formal education in operatic voice and classical composition, Nova, now performing as My Brightest Diamond, produces explorative sounds described as “electronic, chamber, and art pop”. Layered with her airy, soulful voice, Nova’s technical proficiency and diverse background are on full display throughout her music. Her classical training has hardly held her back from delving into a wide variety of musical genres, proving her to be quite the exception to the unspoken rule that artists should are generally either classical or modern. To give a clear idea of the full depth of Nova’s experience, she has provided vocal support to artists including Sufjan Stevens, Laurie Anderson, The Decemberists, Bryce and Aaron Dessner, composer David Lang, Sarah Kirkland Snider, David Byrne, Fat Boy Slim, Bon Iver, and The Blind Boys of Alabama, among others. Outside of performing, she has also composed music for orchestras, as well as marching bands. Most recently, Nova has performed via her band concept My Brightest Diamond. Their latest EP, Champagne, was released in April of this year, and it’s just the sort of synthy-layered goodness you’d expect from this talented frontwoman. Nova’s voice takes center stage, powerful and finely tuned, but doesn’t overpower the music behind it. The title track is upbeat and bright, while “A Million Pearls” creates an emotive, introspective vibe, perfectly supported by Nova’s ethereal crooning. The EP also contains three variations on Champagne, two of which add even more electro sound to the tune. In both the original version and the remixes, the lyrics seem to be a narrative for the trajectory of My Brightest Diamond and Shara Nova:“Like bubbles in champagne, no one can stop what’s coming up. I cannot go halfway, no I will not stop, going up, going up” - Mixed by Mitchell Graham. Hosted by Emmalee Smith.
Shara Nova graduated from the University of North Texas with a BA in vocal performance and went on to compose works for opera, youth choirs and her own baroque pop band, My Brightest Diamond. She has recorded as a guest vocalist with David Byrne, Laurie Anderson, The Decemberists, Sufjan Stevens and The Blind Boys of Alabama, and she’s collaborated with visual artists Matthew Ritchie and Matthew Barney. She’s also the mother of 7 year old Cozzie. In this episode we discuss artistic fear vs freedom, touring 60% of the year, how Shara organizes her time when not on tour, being present for her child, and the dedication required to pull it all off. I spoke to Shara over Skype from her studio in Detroit in September of 2017.

No guests this week, but listen in to hear Micah and Chuy chat about those things, as well as the role of politics in art, the value of art in a STEM-focused society, Pepsi, and ghosts.

After moving to Detroit from New York and separating from her husband, My Brightest Diamond's Shara Worden decided to change her last name to Nova. The frontwoman for the indie-rock band, singer and composer talks to Helga Davis about about her upcoming album and Southern roots, about leaning into vulnerability, and why being uncomfortable is crucial in art-making. She also talks about why it was important for her to escape the art scene and rub shoulders with construction workers, and what it means that her new name translates to "new song." “Vulnerability is I think one thing that I, we, I am so afraid of. We want control or perceived control and I think art-making is like subjecting yourself to this admission that you don’t have control. So I think that many, or maybe all, of my decisions are motivated by challenge, and in a way where I find where my vulnerability is, is the exact place that I need to lean into.” –Shara Nova Subscribe to Helga on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts, and follow Helga Davis on facebook. Q2 Music is thrilled to offer an advance listen to Helga, a new podcast that features conversations with diverse, uncompromising and socially conscious artists across the creative and performing arts spectrum. Launching next week with two episodes — acclaimed opera director Peter Sellars (Monday, Nov. 14) and singer and My Brightest Diamond bandleader Shara Nova (Tuesday, Nov. 15) — Helga's first season will continue with 10 episodes released Mondays through Jan. 9. Get a sneak peek of excerpts from the first few episodes in the audio above, and please help new audiences discover Helga by giving the show a rating and review on iTunes. “Artists play an important role on the front lines of social change, often confronting issues in ways that touch people more intimately than political rhetoric. I couldn’t be more excited (and nervous!) to launch this podcast, and to speak with artists across the creative spectrum who display a radical autonomy in their work, and actively push against their place in the larger community and culture — and show us how we can too.” — Helga Davis Subscribe to Helga on iTunes. About the host: Helga Davis is a sought-after vocalist for anyone who had something experimental or difficult to communicate. She has collaborated with noted musicians including Lawrence “Butch” Morris, Nona Hendryx, Bernice Johnson Reagon, Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, Shara Nova and Paola Prestini — who in 2012, wrote the chamber opera Oceanic Verses for her. During that year, she was also chosen from among 40 performers to star as principal in the international revival of Robert Wilson’s and Philip Glass’s landmark opera Einstein on the Beach. Read more.

Never at a loss for notes, Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond is at it again, this time with a brazen tell-all album called This Is My Hand. Join us as we pick apart the nuances of this latest work in our weekly review. After this musical onslaught, we took some time to discuss the impact of "person" in an album. Whether invited to place oneself in someone else's shoes, or to accept a foreign narrative, this simple literary choice guides our experience of the tale... but does it ever affect the intensity of the experience? These are available via digital music services and in a limited edition physical pressing available to members of our subscription-only Cantaloupe Club. After receiving a traditional French diploma in music, Florent Ghys researched experimental and minimalist music--leading him to Bang on a Can's Summer Festival at MASS MoCA in 2007. Returned to his hometown in Bordeaux and missing the community he found around the summer festival, Ghys asked himself, "What would I write if I had to write for an ensemble in which I am the only player?" Ghys says of his process: "The reasons for this schizophrenic question are multiple. Returning to Bordeaux from Paris, I had the feeling of being musically isolated - of being out of tune with my new environment - and I couldn't stop writing. I was also interested in the idea of breaking the boundary between the composer and the musician. and the feeling I had of sitting in the audience while my music was being played onstage wasn't, to be honest, all that satisfying. "I didn't intend to compose a solo for myself playing the upright bass, nor did I intend to compose a piece for me and a fleet of clones, but I did intend to create a 'multiple-me' ensemble. "I know multi-track recording will never replace live recording, but multi-tracking was an interesting starting point to see if it would change my compositional process while writing strictly for me - after all, the instrumentation for the EP was linked only to the instruments I can actually play. I could have an upright bass, a bass, a guitar, an electric guitar, a voice. I could also use a pianino (a small 6 octaves piano) and hit some dishes in my kitchen." Baroque Tardif: Soli is the first in a series of three EPs from Florent Ghys. Olivier Manchon "Come Back" (mp3) "Memoires (feat.
