About Alexander Gustafson Alex is An Award Winning Illustrator, Concept Artist, Maquette Sculptor and Art Director. Growing up in the icy mountains of Vermont, he enjoyed drawing stories and playing Dungeons and Dragons to ward off the cold. Alex also spent hours in those formative years admiring the works of modern masters like Todd Lockwood, Chris Van Allsburg, James Gurney, and Brom. All of this eventually compelled him to seek out a career in fantasy illustration, where he has the freedom to create worlds and tell stories with pictures. A few years back, when I was on a storytelling retreat with Martin Shaw in Crete, is where Andreas and I met.  A week of stories, wine, and late nights with a Venus retrograde in Scorpio is how I remember it.  He and I had many conversations about runes, lost constellations and dragons. This week on the Vintage RPG Podcast, instead of focusing on a particular game or book, we're looking at a specific villain, the demon prince Orcus, lord of the undead. The big guy has some interesting real world history and folklore to delve into regarding monsters in general. Todd Lockwood is an illustrator and author, whose work has appeared on NY Times best-selling novels, magazines, video games, collectible card games, and fantasy role-playing games. It has been honored with multiple appearances in Spectrum and the Communication Arts Illustration Annual, and with numerous industry awards. Always known for the narrative power of his paintings, Todd's debut novel, "The Summer Dragon" was released by DAW Books to rave reviews, named by B&N and Amazon both on their shortlist of "Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy Novels of the Year."

First Story:  “Keeper of Memory” by Todd Lockwood Daen screamed until the monster’s teeth crushed ribs against ribs. He sat still, surprised to feel moss and short grass under the heels of his hands. Panting, he rubbed his face with pale fingers and blinked away the blur in his eyes. His sweat grew cold in the damp air.  Gods, what a dream!
