Welcome to The Darkest House—Monte Cook Game's TTRPG where the house isn't just haunted, it's actively plotting your doom! Join us as we dive into cursed tools, doom mechanics, and Philip Harlock's questionable relationship with the most emotionally unstable building ever. Ready for some spooky home improvement tips? Listen if you dare! Summary WARNING: SPOILERS! Get ready for the RPGBOT.Podcast's spookiest, creepiest, most definitely-not-cursed episode yet! This time, the hosts bravely enter "The Darkest House” - the TTRPG from Monte Cook Games where the house itself is not just a building, but an actively vengeful character who's probably plotting against you while you're folding laundry. They dive deep into the game's doom mechanics, which will make you question all your life choices, and explore why Philip Harlock's relationship with a haunted house might be just a little too intense. Spoiler: there's doom, tension, and a mysterious, probably evil, house in desperate need of a good therapist. They also reveal the game's secret to ultimate horror: it's not about jump scares—it's the creeping psychological dread of realizing your character's personal arc is falling apart faster than IKEA furniture. Plus, they cover how you can drag this existential nightmare into your other campaigns! Because, clearly, nothing says “fun Friday night” like being emotionally terrorized by a building with personality issues. Tune in, if you dare. Or, you know, if you're just looking for DIY home renovation tips... of the haunted variety. In this week's Flashlight, we talk about intellectual property, resolve to go to law school, and finally earn that explicit rating. You can tell that we record a few weeks in advance, because we joke about WotC's next bad decision but we don't know about the DNDBeyond debacle yet. Jake gets into economic theory. Reilly's mic might just be a cursed artifact. Spoiler warning for Fountainhead? Also, we're not actually sponsored by Microsoft.Dennis mentioned the OGL controversy last week, so go listen to the interview if you'd like to hear another perspective on the whole situation. Also, here's a book by Reilly's professor that looks pretty cool. Here are some links that we used in research for the episode. Here's a Wall Street Journal article on the Hasbro reorganization that refers to D&D as “old-school tabletop games”.Here's the Hasbro press release about the WotC CEO becoming the overall Hasbro CEO.Here's the interview with WotC's VP of tabletop gaming about the rationale for the OGL.Here's an academic journal article with statistics on TTRPG publications after the release of the OGL.Here's a very early Gizmodo piece on the updated OGL.Here's a blog post that lays out the biggest issues with the proposed updated OGL.Here's Hasbro's annual SEC report for 2022.Here's an article about the plans to release new editions under a Creative Commons license. Here's a review of Paizo's ORC license. Here's a Reddit thread on Paizo's ORC license and whether it'll be applied to Pathfinder Infinite. Here's Monte Cook's guide to consent in gaming. If you like the music on the show, go check out more of Reilly's music. In this week's Flashlight, we talk about playtesting at scale, becoming a cult leader, and the development of D&D 3e and D&D 3.5e as well as Pathfinder. Reilly shares his philosophy on ability checks and roleplay. Jake really doesn't know anything about cinema. We mention the games Swords of the Serpentine and Time Watch, both of which look extremely fun. Also, here are some links that we used in research for the episode: Here's a Department of Commerce study called “A Nation Online” that talks about who would be able to access the Internet in the era of the 3rd Edition playtest, complete with some very old-school Excel charts. Here's a forum thread from Jonathan Tweet (the lead designer on D&D 3rd Edition) that talks about the changes in 3rd Edition. Here's a contemporary Death Cookie review of 3rd Edition that discusses some of the changes from previous editions. Here's a review of 3rd Edition play from 2000 that's mostly positive. Here's another forum thread with a retrospective on how players felt about D&D 3rd Edition. Here's Monte Cook, one of the designers for 3rd Edition (but not 3.5) talking about the development of 3.5.Here's a brief history of Paizo, the publisher of Pathfinder. Here's the character generator we used in this episode. We didn't really get into this, but Roll20's Orr Report shows the relative popularity of different TTRPG systems. Head over to our website to see to the character sheet that Reilly builds in this episode. Episode 175 Streamed Live Tuesday January 23, 2023 Main Topic: Divide -Divide-Divide The Hobby! https://youtu.be/L9pDhntGoVY?t=30 (sample of the song “Divide” by Disturbed) Bravo Mr. Boivin: https://youtu.be/u20Wuj5gMY0 What is wrong with just accepting the natural division of folks in the hobby? (i.e., BrOSR, 4D, Basic DD 1st-3rd level, 3.X epic tabletop skirmish, Sparkletroll Barista D&D, etc.) Let them do what they want and screech about being Elite, who cares? Shouldn't we all just try to be excellent to each other? Maybe we should try to be excellent in our chosen playstyle? Let's be elite in our own preferred play style, if possible, whatever that may be. Can Big Geek Con begin to be the play we attempt to achieve excellence in our style of play? This may include some Gatekeeping, but only as it pertains to folks trying to horn in on your fun by bringing in some other style you do not enjoy or maybe do NOT want at your table. We can and should still nerd rage but try to pursue this excellence, if nothing else just for ourselves. If it helps others then so be it. Plus, it'll be fun to debate who are the true elites of TTRPGS! More Settings & Adventures and Less Systems! Inspired by a Facebook post I commented on and then was commented on by the following: Bitty Jen(username on Facebook) “Respectfully, I'll pass. As mentioned earlier, there are more than enough rulesets/variants/clones/combo-rewrites..etc etc But good luck with yours. What the community really needs are competent writers of modules/campaigns who don't take themselves too seriously, and don't try to reinvent the wheel with stupid gimmicks.” New systems are not bad may be but less valuable to some these days than new settings/adventures/modules/Pop-in Principles/System neutral. Randy: “I do not deny the gamer fascination and love of new systems/games, but I'd like to see ore settings a la Savage Worlds business model over WoTC and many others endless array of supplements then Rinse&Repeat for each new edition. System neutral is ,for me, superior since it will never require updates/new editions and will be evergreen. Experienced DMs would find more value from Adventures/Modules/Settings than new systems in general if they have a long running campaign…yes, I am speaking for them. Of course, some GMs like other game systems for cannon fodder. Now gamers, in general, cannot resist the new shiny, but in the realm of the OSR, it has been said many times...who needs another clone retro or otherwise? What about Monte Cook's Arcana Unearthed/Evolved style ‘systems? Too much like retro-clones, I guess. But the monetary drawback is 1 DM – 1 purchase…how to monetize such settings and adventure modules to the players? What could a player be offered besides a new system?” Report from Big Geek Land Big Geek Con 2 September 20-22, 2024 Friday Noon-11pm, Saturday 8a-11pm, Sunday Noon-6p??? Considering get-together at the attached Uno's Friday & Saturday 9pm till close to play, wind down, meet-n-greet. Even when you're equipped with quickstart materials (as we discussed a few episode ago...!), it can be daunting to prepare your/your players' first Changeling game. Many of the potential speed bumps can be smoothed over with a solid Session Zero, where everyone gets together, talks about the characters they want to play, the particular game and story they expect to craft, and the questions they need answered before diving into the roleplaying "proper". In this episode, we draw on our experiences both great and abysmal, to inform our takes on some important things to think about in general and for Changeling in particular. This is by no means a tutorial on "how to Storytell," but we hope that it will helpfully enrich your own playing style. Our social media links, if you'd care to leave some feedback, show your appreciation, or just scream like an opossum in the night: Discord: https://discord.me/ctpEmail: podcast@changelingthepodcast.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100082973960699Mastodon: https://dice.camp/@ChangelingPodPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/changelingthepodcast consent documents In this episode, we make reference to these documents, which some Storytellers like to circulate before starting to supplement the "lines" and "veils" deployed in-game. They're usually checklists of topics which might be triggering for players, giving them the opportunity to highlight specific items they don't want in a game. There are a variety of these out in the world, but here are three (free) examples: Monte Cook's "Consent in Gaming" booklet: https://www.montecookgames.com/store/product/consent-in-gaming/Gehenna Gaming's WoD/horror-centered checklist/safety document: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1g5c2GhmnJYaGIDFKlxgXLL_GruGPNncv/view?usp=sharingAnother WoD-centered example, from DTRPG: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/314220/World-of-Darkness-RPG-Consent-Checklist-A4 your hosts Josh Hillerup (any pronoun) requires players to handwrite their sheets with calligraphy on parchment if they take Title greater than 2. Pooka G (any pronoun/they) awards starting XP based on how many crullers each player brings to the table in tribute. The customary three great blessings of Ween to each and every one of you! Okay, so this game isn't especially scary. By now you should have recognized that we may or may not give a fuck about tradition from one day to the next. In this case, we've decided to harness the power of ween to focus on a few newer games for the season. Any chance to dodge another OSR retroclone or D20 shovelware, am I right? Today we discuss Stealing Stories for the Devil, which is a heist game written by Monte Cook, so that's two new things!
A longtime mutual from the Twitterverse, Mer aka ArchMageofDice joins me to talk about their favorite fandoms. We talk about their favorite video game franchise, Golden Sun. Find out why they love the franchise (1 and 2 for sure, maybe not 3 so much) and why the Golden Sun community still waits for a 4th entry into the series. From there, we talk about how they first got into tabletop roleplaying games. From D&D and Eberron, Adventure Zone and Actual Play podcasts, Twitter, and more. Find out why they love Monte Cook's Invisible Sun TTRPG and what else they're into. We also talk about what it takes to stream tabletop roleplaying games on Twitch as a player and a producer. If you're interested in getting into the streaming side of TTRPG's, this is a great part of the episode. Welcome back from the Shadow, our fellow Vislae, take a stroll and reacquaint yourself with ... the Actuality. In this session zero for Monte Cook's Invisible Sun, Christian does his best to herd the cats that are the other DMs as we navigate the complex terminology and incredibly surreal world of Invisible Sun. The DMs sit at computers in the Shadow (our Earth world simulation) to create a crew of vislae (beings of magic) back in the Actuality (the waking real world everyone we know is totally running from in a dream), and we make a few important narrative decisions for Christian to use in our upcoming series. For all its complicated jargon and disorganized pdfs, Invisible Sun just oozes flavor and incredible worldbuilding, and the Monte Cook classic "You're a(n) [adjective] [noun] who [verbs]" really shines when you can ignore the rules of our shared reality and get really, really weird. We aren't the most organized we've ever been in a session, we do a fair amount of ranting, but we hope you enjoy the first bits of your time in the Actuality with us... Welcome back to Meet the DMs, our interview style series where we sit down with one another and ask the hard-hitting questions, get real deep and introspective and... or just talk about what we love about RPGs and what led us to this wild endeavor we call DMs After Dark! In this episode, Jess interviews Christian, the elder among the DMs, and he regales us with tales from the beforetimes of RPGs. Joking aside, he shares his humble origins (RIP the 1e Thief), love of comics (leading to Mutants & Masterminds), and his experiences running, playing, and writing for Call of Cthulhu. We learn more about his RPG collection and even his favorite curse word! Christian is also running our next series, which will be Monte Cook's Invisible Sun. Stay tuned for more of the bizarre psychedelic reality-shaping setting! Show Notes: This week, Fiona and guest host Rob from the Realm of Fire podcast take a deep breath and dive into one of the most ambitious single-author RPG campaign setting ever, Monte Cook's 'Ptolus: The City By The Spire!' A place of mysteries, secrets, and dark histories, Ptolus lies forever in the shadow of a towering stone spire reaching impossibly high into the sky, an enigma and a reminder of evil long past. Moreover, the city sits atop a seemingly endless network of ancient dungeons that draw adventurers from all corners of the Empire. 'Ptolus: The City By The Spire!' has been met with critical acclaim and intense praise for its depth of detail, breadth and volume of material, ease of use and staggeringly imaginative content. In addition, the book also includes a packet with a poster map and dozens of handouts, as well as another 300 pages of downloadable content for GMs to use. Show Notes: This week, for our Halloween inspired episode, Fiona and Hamilton get into the spooky season with 'Ghostwalk', a 3rd edition campaign setting for Dungeons & Dragons. The setting is centered around a locale known as the Veil of Souls, the subterranean entrance to the land of the dead, and the city of Manifest above it, where ghosts can solidly manifest and live alongside normal folk. In-world, the term "Ghostwalk" refers to the pilgrimage made by visitors to the city of Manifest. Campus Crier The Campus Crier is where we keep all the mythos related news and info for the podcast, this episode was recorded on March 25th, 2021. Modophius has rereleased Achtung! Cthulhu using their own in house 2d20 system. You can pick up the Player's Guide for 30 pounds, and the Game Master's Guide for 40 at their website. Free League has released the fifth title in their Chronicle of the Throne of Thorns campaign called Alberetor: The Haunted Waste and will send players far to the south of Davokar and into the Lost Kingdoms of the South. You can preorder it from their website for $43, and as always we have links in the show notes. Monte Cook has a new thing, and it's… pretty fucking cool. The Darkest House is something totally different for online play. I've downloaded the demo and it's… I'm not saying it's a game changer, but it's trying. Discord We have our MUP Discord and we are all there! We invite all of our listeners to come and enjoy the community of Call of Cthulhu and horror gaming fans. Main Topic This episode we decided to do another Bestiary, but at the behest of our guest, that we will meet momentarily, we decided to imagine a beast pulled from the works of Hieronymus Bosch! So after a year and a half we finally found him living in a cave made of scrolls from Babylon and Ancient Greece nestled in the bowels of the History Department's archives, Please welcome Dr. Gerard. HyperLab Omni - www.hyperlabomni.com http://nathanmoody.bandcamp.com Chad -- Tree Man with Boat Shoes, from the Hell panel of the triptych The Garden of Earthly Delights. Murph -- For my beast I choose the female bird demon from the Hell side of The Garden of Earthly Delights, specifically the blue little bugger sitting on the high privy chair eating people, and shitting out their souls in the pit of Hell. Dave -- Tondal's Vision has everything… everything. But I want to talk about the round guy with the trumpet nose… and the doll with the empty eyes and coins coming out of it?
1.9 Welcome RPG Ramblings with Jeff Jones. This a weekly show exploring the various details of the TableTop RPG hobby through discussions with interesting people. The first interview is with freelance writer and game designer, Matt Forbeck. His history is too long and detailed to list here but is only a google search away. We talk about his journey of taking his Sword and Sorcery stories and turning them into a new RPG. We discuss what is is like licensing the use of Monte Cook's Cypher System as well as the unforeseen disaster occurring after the Kickstarter funded. Matt is an industry veteran and there is a lot to learn. The second part is a discussion with Ben Laurence about stat blocks. Yes, you heard me correctly. Stat Blocks. Apparently, I have an ax to grind and Ben humors me. I intended for this to be a ten minute banter back in forth but this grew in scope and our dialogue took on a life of its own. This show is unapolgetically, RPG Ramblings and this is what you get. It is a long episode and time is a wasting. This episode is about my first steps into trying a totally different way of roleplaying and being the Game Master. Now, when I say “totally different way” I mean totally different for me. There is perhaps nothing new here for the GM who is secure in their approach to roleplaying games. On the other hand, if you are - like me - a bit of an old grog who has never really grasped the so-called “New School” ways of doing things, then maybe you'll be curious to find out how I got on when I dove headlong into the world of Monte Cook's Cypher System. We were very excited to sit down with Monte Cook to talk about the new Heroes of the Cypher System kickstarter, super heroes, what heroes look like in 2020, monsters, and the evolution of the Cypher System. You can find Heroes of the Cypher System on kickstarter through December 11, 2020. As we mention in the interview, every MCG kickstarter is a great deal! Learn more about the Cypher System at the Monte Cook Games website or on Twitter! *Aser and Megan recorded this interview for The Redacted Files podcast, but we also discussed Numenera and Cypher in general.
From 11/14/2020 The CU team sat Down with Darcy Ross the Community Relations Coordinator for Monte Cook Games. We had a blast with Darcy discussing a wide range of topics. We learned all about how she got started in the gaming industry, what is the asset team all about, what is Darcy favorite MCG products, we learned a little bit about Burn Bryte a new rpg that Darcy helped design made exclusively for Roll20 and everything that she learned from Monte Cook while recording "Your Best Game Ever" YouTube series. It was a pleasure chatting with her and we learned a lot in the process. Hope you enjoy! Interested in Cypher System or other Monte Cook Games?
