Step back into the age of sword and sorcery as we unravel the untold story of Universal Studios' most dangerous and innovative attraction: the Conan the Barbarian Sword and Sorcery Spectacular. This legendary stunt show wasn't just entertainment—it was a revolution that forever changed how theme parks approach live experiences. From Robert E. Howard's complex literary character to Frank Frazetta's iconic artistic vision and Arnold Schwarzenegger's silver screen portrayal, we trace Conan's evolution before diving deep into the attraction that dared to use real fire, military-grade lasers, and death-defying stunts to wow audiences. The show's creation marked the moment Universal deliberately established itself as the "anti-Disney," poaching Imagineers and pushing boundaries Disney wouldn't touch. What forgotten theme park attractions do you wish would return? Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Sunday, Oct. 29   Bridge Valley officials tout the success of its dual enrollment program. The WV School of Osteopathic Medicine establishes a program at Fairmont State. And learn about famous art that was inspired by the Mothman legend…on today's daily304. #1 – From METRO NEWS – Bridge Valley Community and Technical College in South Charleston is making some positive strides for a few new efforts to increase and retain enrollment, as well as transform the overall student experience. The dual enrollment program the college has launched this year allows high school students to take a Bridge Valley course while still in high school if there is a teacher at that high school who has a certification allowing them to be an adjunct to Bridge Valley. Bridge Valley President Casey Sacks said there are a total of 34 high school students taking advantage of the dual enrollment in some form or another and from various districts.  Sacks said they have been doing work on process mapping around the recruitment and admission teams, as well as a reorganization of student affairs.  “I think a lot of this work has been what has driven some of our enrollment increase, because it has led us to a better job of communicating with people who are interested in the college, so it's something that we all recognize that we're going to continue doing moving forward,” Sacks said. Read more: https://wvmetronews.com/2023/10/09/bridge-valley-seeing-success-with-new-dual-enrollment-program-efforts-to-standardize-student-experience/    #2 – From METRO NEWS — The West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine is establishing the Pre-Osteopathic Medicine Program at Fairmont State and Frostburg State universities. The programs are designed to provide a firm foundation for students interested in osteopathic medicine, including the skills and credentials needed to gain admission and ultimately success in osteopathic medicine school, according to WVSOM President James Nemitz. “These are pipeline programs to educate students about what osteopathic medicine is and to provide them with a pathway to help them be successful at achieving acceptance at medical school,” Nemitz said. The WVSOM campus is located in Lewisburg and was founded as the Greenbrier College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1972. Through the Statewide Campus, WVSOM maintains locations throughout the state used by students in the final two years to complete clinical rotations. The institution is nationally recognized for the number of DOs that graduate from WVSOM and work in rural settings. “We're an attractive institution, especially for students who come from rural areas,” Nemitz said. “And we're experts in training those students to be rural medical providers.” Read more: https://wvmetronews.com/2023/10/22/osteopathic-school-of-medicine-inks-deals-with-fairmont-state-frostburg-state/   #3 – From WBOY-TV Clarksburg – The Legend of Mothman has inspired tons of West Virginians and artists, and items from beers to baseball uniforms have been created using the cryptid's image. Mothman is best known for its presence at the Silver Bridge in Point Pleasant in 1967, right before the bridge collapsed, killing 46 people.  The legend was widely unknown and forgotten even by the residents of Point Pleasant until John Keel, a prominent journalist and UFOlogist, immortalized the tale in “The Mothman Prophecies” book in 1975. One of the best-known visual art pieces associated with Mothman, the painting “Mothman” by comic book artist Frank Frazetta, was created around 1980.  And of course, one of the most recognizable and famous Mothman-inspired artworks is the Bob Roach Mothman Statue in Point Pleasant. The stainless steel figure was created in 2003 and has become a main attraction for the town and a must-see during the Mothman Festival every year. Learn more about the legend -- and the artwork it has inspired -- at the Mothman Museum in Point Pleasant.  Read more: https://www.wboy.com/news/west-virginia/the-3-most-famous-artworks-inspired-by-west-virginias-mothman-cryptid/   Find these stories and more at wv.gov/daily304. "It's not just that he grew up in a rural environment too. He was born on July 30th, 1947. And most of us today don't have any understanding or relationship to what Europe was like right after World War II. The winter of 1946/1947 in Austria was the most brutal in decades. The people already had too little food. They were in an occupied country. The summer potato crops failed. As Arnold has said, his mother had to go from farm to farm to farm, begging for food to be able to feed her children. His father, like all the men in the village, was defeated by the war. I mean, they were not just defeated by their side losing, but realizing what their side had stood for, that they were the bad guys. And he saw them all physically, emotionally, intellectually defeated and taking it out on their wives and children, that he was beaten and his mother was beaten. All the neighbor kids were beaten, and they were beaten into a kind of placid defeat. And he alone would not accept that. He could not see that life for himself. And he was, as a child, searching for ways to get out of that. And bodybuilding became that when he learned about bodybuilding as a very poor boy. They lived on the top floor of a house. They had no plumbing. They all bathed once a week in the same tub in the kitchen. And his brother and he had to bring the water in. His mother heated it, and they took baths one by one. Mother first, father second, older brother third, Arnold last in the tub of dirty water. And so he wanted out of that. And as a poor boy, he had nothing but his body to work with. That was it. There was not going to be any college. There was not going to be any of that. There was going to be some kind of menial job, or he could use what he had - his body - to get him out of there."“Why I was different from all the other boys in my town I cannot tell you. And as a poor boy, he had nothing but his body to work with. That was it. There was not going to be any college. There was not going to be any of that. There was going to be some kind of menial job, or he could use what he had - his body - to get him out of there."www.taschen.com/en/limited-editions/film/03105/arnold-collector-s-editionwww.schwarzenegger.comwww.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcastImages courtesy of Taschen. “Why I was different from all the other boys in my town I cannot tell you. I was simply born with the gift of vision.” – ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGERIs there any better example of the American Dream than Arnold Schwarzenegger? What does it take to make your vision a reality? How do you cultivate iron focus to overcome any obstacle and realize your dreams? On the publication of Arnold Schwarzenegger's limited edition two-volume book published by TASCHEN, we sat down with Senior Editor and Writer Dian Hansen to discuss Schwarzenegger's life, accomplishments, and history of unforgettable performances. The book has been a decade-long collaborative process and along with portraits by leading photographers Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, Robert Mapplethorpe, Herb Ritts, Francesco Scavullo, and Andy Warhol, it is also filled with photos from Arnold's private archive and exclusive interviews. Dian's other works include The Art of Pin-up, Masterpieces of Fantasy Art, and The Fantastic Worlds of Frank Frazetta."As Arnold Schwarzenegger says, 'We don't have Republican air. We don't have Democrat water. We all breathe the same air. We all have the same water. It's happening to all of us, and it's happening all over the world. And if we just continue to ignore it so that we can put some money in our pockets, or we can get reelected, what are we leaving for the future?' And you know, his devotion to children and to helping children makes him look at it from a different perspective. He's not one of these heartless old politicians who's just like, well, as long as it doesn't happen while I'm alive, I'm going to get rich off of this. He is always thinking of the next generations. He is always thinking of what he is going to be able to hand down."www.taschen.com/en/limited-editions/film/03105/arnold-collector-s-editionwww.schwarzenegger.comwww.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcastImages courtesy of Taschen. And he was able to replicate the sound of eating potato chips just with his mouth. He is underappreciated. I guess that's what it is. "The really important thing that he did here had to do with climate change. He told me that he had always been interested in the environment. He grew up being very cautious about everything. You don't waste water, you don't waste power, all these things as a poor child. But he said he didn't really understand what pollution was doing until he became governor. And he got all the memos, he got all the information that is fed to politicians, that is fed to every politician. That everyone in office knows about, and many choose to ignore, but for him, it really opened his eyes. And he said, 'We can't let this go on.' So he initiated a greenhouse gas cap in California, and people fought against it. Are you kidding? It has continued to this day. People have gotten behind him for it, that we will reduce emissions, and we will have cleaner air in California, and we will have cleaner water, and we will have cleaner beaches. He blocked offshore drilling and he said, because when he first came here, there had been an oil spill, and he went on the beach, and he got tar on his feet. No one should have to have tar on their feet when they go to the beach. And that was his real contribution that has now led to his activism for climate change and ending pollution all over the world."“Why I was different from all the other boys in my town I cannot tell you. What the Riff?!?
1980 - March: Molly Hatchet "Flirtin' with Disaster"

Many folks know that the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd came out of Jacksonville, Florida.  But they weren't the only big southern rock band to arise from that city.  Molly Hatchet was another southern rock band from Jacksonville, also sporting three guitars.  The band formed in 1971 and shares a lot of the inspiration and influence of Skynyrd.  their best selling album was their second one, Flirtin' with Disaster, which peaked at number 19 and became a 2x platinum seller in the United States.  The name of the band comes from the legend of a Salem-era prostitute who supposedly mutilated and decapitated her clients.  The band was not only famous for its music, but for its album cover art.  Fantasy artist Frank Frazetta created the cover, depicting a Viking-like warrior with a winged helmet and battle axe.  Personnel for Flirtin' with Disaster included Danny Joe Brown on vocals, guitarists Dave Hlubek, Steve Holland, and Duane Roland, Banner Thomas on bass, and Bruce Crump on drums. While Flirtin' with Disaster is the band's most successful album, they also found considerable success with the eponymous debut album released prior to Flirtin' and the third album, “Beatin' the Odds,” released with new front man Jimmy Farrar who replaced Danny Joe Brown who left for a number of reasons including diabetes.  The band would not achieve similar success with its future albums, though Brown would return to the band by their fifth album.  Molly Hatchet remained a popular touring band, though today all the original members have died.  Friend of the show Craig Dale joins us as Wayne brings us this Southern rock classic for the podcast.  Let the Good Times RollWhile this may be considered a deeper cut, the track which closes out the album did receive significant airplay on rock stations when the album came out.  “Give me wine, women, whiskey and rock 'n' roll and let me sleep my days away.”  Flirtin' with DisasterThis is the timeless classic from the album, the title track, and the opening song for side two.  Although this is considered their breakout hit and highest charting, it only went to number 42 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The song has been used in a number of films and television shows including Suspect Zero, Straw Dogs, My Name is Earl, and King of the Hill.Good Rockin'This deep cut is one in which all band members share writing credits.  It was not released as a single but did appear as a B-side to their second single, “It's All Over Now.”  It is simply a straightforward rock party song - “So if you're feeling good, if you feel alright we're going to have a rock 'n' roll time tonight.”Whiskey ManThe leading track from the album is a well-known Molly Hatchet song, though it failed to chart.  It is an anti-drinking song in which the lyrics discuss the hazards of alcohol.  “You start to get straight, then you get weak, can't you see you're on a losing streak?” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Coal Miner's Daughter by Loretta Lynn (from the motion picture “Coal Miner's Daughter”)Sissy Spacek won the Academy Award for her portrayal of Loretta Lynn in this biographical drama.  STAFF PICKS:Back On My Feet Again by The BabysBruce brings us the number 33 hit by John Waite and the Babys - their fourth and final top 40 hit.  This is off their album “Union Jacks.”  They opened for Journey on tour, and their keyboardist, Jonathan Cain, would wind up joining Journey when the Babys broke up.  What I Like About You by The RomanticsRob presents a party song that got a lot of airplay with a 50's/60's feel.  It was written in 1979 and it came out on the debut album from the Romantics.  The lead singer, Wally Palmar, is the drummer for the group.  The song only made it to number 49 on the US charts, but its garage band feel and party credentials have given it a timeless quality that fares better the longer it is around.Magic by Olivia Newton JohnLynch tests Wayne's patience with this number 1 hit from Australia's own Olivia Newton John.  It was recorded for the soundtrack to the 1980 musical fantasy film “Xanadu” and was released as its lead single.  The song was written by John Farrar who wrote a number of Olivia Newton John's hits.Goodbye Blue Sky by Pink FloydFriend of the show Craig Dale brings us a haunting tune from the Pink Floyd album “The Wall.”  This track reveals how the horror of war and the blitz formed a brink in the wall of isolation the protagonist forms in his descent into madness.  The child speaking at the front of the song is actually band member Roger Waters' son, Harry.Rockin' Heaven Down by HeartWayne closes out this week's podcast with his favorite Heart song from the album “Bebe Le Strange.”  The track features Nancy Wilson starting the song on a 12-string electric guitar, and Nancy Wilson's fierce vocals.  “Hoot into the night, that look from eye to eye, a flash gets passed around, a band of wild angels rockin' heaven down.”

We're back! Thank you all for your patience during our break. But I believe with my latest guest, Ken Viola, that the wait was worth it. What drives this podcast more than anything are the collector stories. Having been a collector since the 1950s, it's safe to say that Ken has witnessed and experienced more than most in this hobby. Not many can say they were friends with Steve Ditko, or got to hang Frank Frazetta's Egyptian Queen painting in their parents' home, or can lay claim to being the OG Alan Moore art collector. Or produce a documentary featuring Will Eisner, Frank Miller, Moebius, Neal Adams, Bernie Wrightson, and other comics legends. And that's just scratching the surface.  We're going to bring Ken back down the road for part two...for now, enjoy your intro to Ken Viola!
