Zijn ex-ploeggenoot Julius Wille herinnert zich nog hoe Mertens als aanvoerder onder John van den Brom uitgroeide tot de absolute ster. In een van zijn laatste wedstrijden scoorde hij een legendarische goal vanaf 40 meter, een moment dat in het blauw-witte geheugen van AGOVV gegrift staat.Buiten het veld? Dries was de gangmaker.
