Let the record show that Kate cut out a very long discussion of how much Betsy dislikes bidets from the beginning of this podcast (and Betsy disagrees with this choice but, to be honest, it was a kind of an odd way to start a children's literature podcast episode). Today's book, while it does involve butts, is more about teeny tiny babies. We discuss hot bidet seats, what Jim LaMarche owes to Chris Van Allsburg, adorable weasels, and more. The Polar Express is a children's picture book by Chris Van Allsburg that features 15 illustrations. Which is about the number of headaches that the surprisingly faithful motion-capture film adaptation by Robert Zemeckis might induce. Kerry and Collin are joined by Erik Childress to talk about the enduring--and maybe not so enduring--legacy of Robert Zemeckis' "The Polar Express." Based on the beloved picture book by Chris Van Allsburg, this film pushed the boundaries of motion-capture animation at the time. How does that technology hold up today? What does the bell symbolize? Which character should've gotten the bell at the end? Plus, Erik's choice for a Christmas TV special/episode is the holiday episode of the '80s sci-fi favorite "V," featuring Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund, singing a Christmas carol about as badly as anyone can. Erik fills Kerry and Collin in on the back-story of the episode, which can be seen on Amazon Prime (if you buy the whole series).

MOVIE NIGHT! Join Tom, Dan, & Sarah as they play that dangerous game from the depths of 1995, Jumanji! Where no boy is safe from getting bat-tornadoed into the jungle for 30 years, turned into a monkey, or bested by a pelican. In this adaption of Chris Van Allsburg's book of the same name, Robin Williams (playing Alan Parrish) shows us that not even jungle imprisonment can undo Dad-trauma, and ventures to help end the game with young Kirsten Dunst and Bradley Pierce before our beloved Jonathan Hyde as Van Pelt can hunt him down. Unpack the complexities of this poem-driven, snakes-and-ladders colonialism revenge story, and its impact on both small American towns and local footwear empires. Contained within: monkey fun, classic screams, time paradoxes, and copious child violence.
Released in 1995 and directed by Joe Johnston, "Jumanji" is a beloved family adventure film that captivates audiences with its imaginative premise and thrilling visual effects. Based on the 1981 children's book of the same name by Chris Van Allsburg, the movie follows the story of two children who discover an ancient magical board game that brings its dangers to life.
This time we discuss the 1981 Caldecott-winning children’s book Jumanji, by Chris Van Allsburg, adapted into the 1995 Robin Williams movie of the same name, and expanded into the new Jumanji franchise started by Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Rankings!: Colin: 1995 movie, 2017 movie, book James: 2017 movie, 1995 movie, book Seth: 2017 movie, 1995 movie, book

While doing another Chris Van Allsburg picture book may seem like a relative no-brainer around the Halloween season, maybe there's a reason we hadn't done this particular title before. Unlike The Stranger, The Widow's Broom (which Betsy mistakenly calls "The Witch's Broom" on the podcast), or even The Mysteries of Harris Burdick, this particular title feels less like a tribute to the uncanny and more like a failed 1991 diatribe against television. The monkey sailors have NOT aged well, and it just sort of feels like a lesser Van Allsburg. But let's dive into the ins and outs of this potentially creepy title. Translated into a score of languages, his books include A Dove of the East & Other Stories, Refiner's Fire, Ellis Island & Other Stories, Winter's Tale, Swan Lake (with illustrations by Chris Van Allsburg), A Soldier of the Great War, Memoir from Antproof Case, A City in Winter, and The Veil of Snows (both with illustrations by Chris Van Allsburg), The Pacific & Other Stories, Freddy and Fredericka, Digital Barbarism, In Sunlight and in Shadow, A Kingdom Far and Clear, and Paris in the Present Tense. Manika Dulcio of the 'I've Been Meaning to Watch That' podcast visits us with a dusty old board game from 2005 called Zathura: A Space Adventure, and before we know it, we're thrust into a wild sci-fi adventure with meteors, dinosaur aliens and frozen older sisters! Jon Favreau's first big effects movie has been eclipsed in popular culture by the first adaptation of a Chris Van Allsburg children's book, Jumanji – with which it bears a striking resemblance – but it has a lot going for it. It features early appearances by Josh Hutcherson and Kristen Stewart, with Dax Shepherd and Tim Robbins as the responsible adults, some striking visuals and a captivating combination of practical and CGI effects. But did it deserve to fall into the memory hole, or should a new generation of kids give it a spin? Find out! Check out Manika's podcast on iTunes, Spotify or wherever good podcasts are streamed! In this picture book classic, travel with young Walter on a fantastical adventure as he journeys—by way of his bed—into a polluted dreamscape world that wakes him up to our collective and individual environmental responsibility. Walter does not appreciate the beauty of nature, or understand his role in keeping the planet healthy . . .until a fantastic journey shows him the tragic fate that could befall Earth if humans like him are not more careful. Chris Van Allsburg (The Polar Express) pairs pitch-perfect narrative with his full-color pastel illustrations, rendering this picture book a story that has stood the test of time. Stuart and Burning Man's Community Services head honcho Terry “Retro” Schoop riff on the streets of our fair city and the naming thereof, from the controversial to the miraculous to the misunderstood. Black Rock City has elaborate art themes, each with street names, each with curious conditions. Why does our recreational refugee camp even need street names? Were they always alphabetical around an imaginary clock face? And what's a clock anyway? Hear this year's art theme (ANIMALIA) express itself through cryptids (animals that no one can prove are real). Folklore and fandom brought us our new ABC street names: Afanc, Bigfoot, Chupacabra, Dingbat… and NOT the Easter Bunny, thanks to Encantados, which are were-dolphins that shape-shift into dapper dancers in search of a party. This is an episode with literature, lore, and laughter — and a pile of BRC trivia for street cred.Streets of BRC 2023: Cavalcade of Cryptids | Burning Man JournalBurning Man 2023: ANIMALIATerry “Retro” Schoop | Burning Man JournalBurning Man Staff: Terry Schoop

Chris Van Allsburg is a successful author of multiple children's books, but it was Joe Johnston's adaptation of JUMANJI that kicked off the franchise we know today. In episode 267, Luke & James revisit a staple of their childhood, explore what 90s cinema teaches about manhood, talk about the legacy of Robin Williams, and explore the wild implications of a pair of time-travelling adults. They finish off by casting their votes on which was better: the book or the movie! He also spent hours in those formative years admiring the works of modern masters like Todd Lockwood, Chris Van Allsburg, James Gurney, and Brom. All of this eventually compelled him to seek out a career in fantasy illustration, where he has the freedom to create worlds and tell stories with pictures. He graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2008 with a master's degree in illustration, and continues to pursue his passion for fantasy, sci-fi, and steampunk art. The Polar Express is a children's book written by Chris Van Allsburg and published by Houghton Mifflin in 1985. The book is now widely considered to be a classic Christmas story for young children. The book is set partially in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the author's hometown, and was inspired in part by Van Allsburg's memories of visiting the Herpolsheimer's and Wurzburg's department stores as a child. It was adapted as an Oscar-nominated motion-capture film in 2004 starring Tom Hanks and directed by Robert Zemeckis. Van Allsburg served as an executive producer on the film. Van Allsburg won the annual Caldecott Medal for illustration of an American children's picture book in 1986, his second after Jumanji.

This podcast covers New Girl Season 3, Episode 15, Exes, which originally aired on February 4, 2014 and was written by Nina Pedrad and directed by Alex Hardcastle. Here's a quick recap of the episode:Nick runs into his ex Caroline and Jess tries to convince him that you can still have a friendship with your ex. Meanwhile Schmidt invites the guys over to his new loft and Schmidt quickly finds that they have both used his place for more than hanging out.We discuss Pop Culture References such as:Don Corleone [The Godfather] - Jess wanted Nick to talk to Caroline because she didn't want to give up the farmer's market because it made her feel like Don Corleone.James Bond / Moneypenny - Coach shared that Schmidt was like James Bond due to his apartment and Winston said he'd be the Moneypenny. Additional Pop Culture References such as:Leno and Eubanks - Nick is confirming that Jess and Berkley are friends after seeing each other naked and Jess shares it's the purest of friendships, “straight Leno and Eubanks”. James “Jay” Leno is an American television host, comedian, and writer. After doing stand-up comedy for years, he became the host of NBC's The Tonight Show with Jay Leno from 1992 to 2009. Kevin Eubanks is an American jazz and fusion guitarist and composer. He was the leader of The Tonight Show Band with host Jay Leno from 1995 to 2010. “Two Step” / Dave Matthews Band - Berkley shared that Jess brushed his hand at a Dave Matthews concert during the band's song “Two Step”. Dave Matthews Band (also known by the initials DMB) is an American rock band formed in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 1991. "Two Step", a song about a couple celebrating their love, released in January 1997 as the fourth single from their album Crash and has also appeared on many DMB concert live albums. Noises Off - Schmidt was setting the boundaries with everyone in the apartment and said, “Now, no exits, no entrances, no Noises Off baloney.” Noises Off is a 1982 play by the English playwright Michael Frayn. Each of the three acts of Noises Off contains a performance of the first act of a play within a play, a sex farce called Nothing On. [Game] of Thrones - When Schmidt is introducing his TV and all the games he could have on he said he could also watch Game of Thrones. Game of Thrones is an American fantasy drama television series created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss for HBO. It is an adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire, a series of fantasy novels by George R. R. Martin, the first of which is A Game of Thrones. The show premiered on HBO in the United States on April 17, 2011, and concluded on May 19, 2019, with 73 episodes broadcast over eight seasons. When Schmidt was reviewing all the sex spots in his loft he shared the following names:Jumanji - Jumanji is a 1995 American fantasy adventure film. Loosely based on Chris Van Allsburg's picture book of the same name, the film is the first installment of the Jumanji franchise. The 1995 film stars Robin Williams, Kirsten Dunst, David Alan Grier, and Bonnie Hunt. The story centers on a supernatural board game that releases jungle-based hazards upon its players with every turn they take. Jean-Michel Basquiat - Jean-Michel Basquiat was an American artist who rose to success during the 1980s as part of the Neo-expressionism movement. Basquiat's art focused on dichotomies such as wealth versus poverty, integration versus segregation, and inner versus outer experience. Since Basquiat's death at the age of 27 from a heroin overdose in 1988, his work has steadily increased in value.Nia Vardalos - Antonia “Nia” Eugenia Vardalos is a Canadian actress, director, producer and screenwriter. She is best known for starring in and writing the romantic comedy film My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002), which garnered her nominations for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical. We discuss which one of us is most likely to avoid difficult conversations, overstay your welcome at someone's house, make a bunch of keys for their friends to their house, and prove your point by any means necessary. We also cover Schmidt inviting the guys over to the loft as our “Schmidtism”. For “Not in the 2020s” we discuss the way Sarah was portrayed at the bar and Caroline being set up as the “crazy ex”. In our “Yes in the 2020s” we talk about how Jess recognized her own privilege and the way Nick interacted with Berkley. We also give a quick look into Adam Brody (Berkley) the guest star we feature in this episode. Also in this episode were the following guest stars who we do not discuss in the podcast: Mary Elizabeth Ellis (Caroline - Previously Discussed in S1E24), Jessica Chaffin (Bertie - Previously Discussed in S3E9), Malea Rose (Sarah), Jenni Melear (Lynn), Janna VanHeertum (Waitress), Forrest Wheeler (Kid), and Tiffany Haddish (Leslie). We also chat about the goof where it looks like Jess is rubbing Berkley's shoulder in one scene but not the next and neither of us found the bear this episode. While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:When Jess is explaining the timeline of when Nick and her got together to Caroline, she uses these milestones as indicators:Syria - During 2012 and 2013, the Syrian Civil War gradually escalated in its third phase. It started in 2011 and is still ongoing 12 years later.London Olympics - London hosted the 2012 Summer Olympics which is an international multi sport event taking place every 4 years. London was the first city to host the modern Olympics 3 times. Hurricane Sandy - Hurricane Sandy was an extremely destructive hurricane in the Atlantic and the largest thus far. It was a category 3 storm when it made landfall in Cuba. In the United States, it affected 24 states from Florida to Maine. Poseidon - When Nick is explaining that he's not friends with his exes, he mentions that he burns them (metaphorically) and gives their ashes to Poseidon. In the Ancient Greek religion, Poseidon was the god of the sea, earthquakes, and horses. He is known as the brother of Zeus, the chief deity of Ancient Greece. .This episode got an 8/10 rating from both Kritika and Kelly and both had the same favorite character: Nick! Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 16!Music: "Hotshot” by scottholmesmusic.comFollow us on Twitter, Instagram or email us at whosthatgirlpod@gmail.com!Website: https://smallscreenchatter.com/
