In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by Sawyer Products, we are bringing you a certified smorgasbord of backpacking goodness. We kick off the show with a somewhat impromptu interview with Instagram and YouTube sensation, Little Skittle. We learn about the last leg of her triple crown, how she embraced the brutality of the CDT, and of course the requisite fuck, marry, kill of the triple crown trails. We then catch up with Travis Avery of Sawyer Products to geek out on all things related to insect repellants, water filter technology, and how a Chicago Bears running back played a crucial role in Sawyer's early success. We wrap the show with a series of AT Hiker submissions for "Stupid Thing of the Week", with a very natural slant toward shit stories guaranteed to entertain. As if that weren't enough, Chaunce and I give a rundown on our favorite moments from Trail Days, what adventure plans we have on the docket for this summer, and the typical chaos. I recall being utterly confused the first time I researched water filters for backpacking. There are pumps, squeeze, and gravity types, but no one told me what to purchase and I was terrified I'd choose one that wouldn't protect me. On this episode, I talk to Travis Avery of Sawyer (the water filter, bug spray, and sun screen maker), about what they offer and how their products solve the problem of filtering water. I learned some things I didn't know previously and I think if you're on the search for knowledge, this episode will suit you well. Travis gives me a rundown of what they offer, how it works, and why their products are so popular. I want to add that Sawyer has a huge heart for people around the world that don't have access to clean drinking water. Travis Avery and Sean Gabriel from THE FOREGONE SYNDICATE spoke to us about their latest game DESYNC. A set in digital world laced with neon and classic 80s style geometry DESYNC forces players to think on their feet be quick on the trigger and more importantly, improvise. We’re also tackling the “Frustum Culling” conundrum. Last week when Kotaku gave their readers a peek under the hood of PS4 flagship title Horizon Zero Dawn they included a GIF that demonstrated how Frustum Culling works, and it's fair to say people were fascinated by the process. However some indie developers were quick to flippantly point out that the technique is neither new nor unique and that a big deal was being made out of nothing. We'll be chatting about the nuts and bolts that make up games behind the scenes and whether or not more or less of this sort of discussion needs to happen between developers and players. Games mean different things to different people, but interactivity is one thing that games do better than most other mediums. But does giving players too many choices, limit story telling potential? Is it better to have a tailor narrative experience or let the players make the story for themselves? Also Scott says something that may have ended his podcasting career… You can find us on social media, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Twitch, YouTube and Steam. Just search for "pixelsift"!
