In Project Hail Mary, amateur astronaut Ryland Grace must travel light years from Earth to save humanity from a dying Sun. The stakes are high, to say the least. But author Andy Weir was intentional about centering hope in his bestselling novel, which inspired the recent blockbuster film starring Ryan Gosling. In today's episode, Andy Weir joins Here and Now's Indira Lakshmanan to discuss his creative world-building process, and why he remains optimistic about our ability to collaborate in the face of existential threats.Support public media with NPR+ and enjoy perks for over 25 podcasts like this one. Mostly Film – Take 242: Harrison Ford In Review — Episode 3The thinking man's thriller era. Jonathan and JP cover three films in three years — 1988, 1990, 1991 — all of them asking Ford to be quieter, more internal, and more uncomfortable than anyone expected from the man who played Han Solo and Indiana Jones.First, Frantic. Roman Polanski's Paris-set thriller — his comeback after the catastrophic failure of Pirates — with Ford as an American surgeon whose wife vanishes from their hotel room and whose attempts to get anyone in authority to care are met with total indifference. Ford suggested they rename it Moderately Disturbed. Polanski was not amused. Ennio Morricone scored it. Robert Towne rewrote parts of it uncredited. The studio cut 15 minutes and imposed a new ending that neither Ford nor Polanski wanted. It's now a cult classic, and the Hitchcock comparisons have stuck. Then Presumed Innocent — by far the biggest commercial hit of the three, $221 million worldwide on a $20 million budget, and the one where Ford plays a prosecutor on trial for the murder of his own mistress. Gordon Willis shot it. John Williams scored it with unusual restraint. Raúl Juliá walks away with it. And the 2024 Apple TV+ series with Jake Gyllenhaal remade it entirely — which version holds up?Then Regarding Henry. J.J. Abrams' first ever produced screenplay, written in his early twenties. Mike Nichols directing. Ford as a ruthless Manhattan lawyer who takes two bullets during a convenience store robbery and wakes up a different person. Bill Nunn doing some of the warmest supporting work in Ford's entire filmography. Critics gave it 47%. Audiences gave it 79%. One of those gaps that tells you something. All three films are about a professional man whose competence and authority get stripped away by forces he can't control. None of them let him punch his way out. After all three underperformed, Ford went back to Patriot Games and The Fugitive. The question for the episode: did these films close a door — or did Ford close it himself?

Most leaders believe the chaos that breaks out when they leave is a people problem. In this episode of DarrenDaily On-Demand, Darren Hardy makes the case that it is almost never a people problem. It is a systems problem, and the leader built it. He draws on his own experience as a managing director in a previous company where he made himself the bottleneck on every decision, and contrasts that with a two-week private cycling trip through Tuscany he took with zero work contact while his business ran without a single fire. Darren also reveals the operating system components that make this kind of leadership liberation possible, and why the single most important mindset shift is accepting that solving is not serving. (8) Timothy Ryback recounts how on January 30, 1933, Hitler is finally summoned to become Chancellor. The appointment hinges on a frantic, last-minute negotiation in Hindenburg's foyer with media mogul Alfred Hugenberg, who reluctantly joins the coalition after being cornered by Göring and Papen. Hugenberg immediately regrets the decision, realizing he has made the "biggest mistake" of his life. The resulting government photograph captures a stunned cabinet and an angry-looking Hitler. The era of political "hustling" ends as Hitler consolidates power, eventually murdering former rivals, including Strasser and Schleicher, during the 1934 Night of the Long Knives.1936?

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 23, 2026 is: frenetic frih-NET-ik adjective Something described as frenetic is filled with excitement, activity, or confusion. The word is a synonym of frantic. // The event was noisy and frenetic, which prompted us to leave early. See the entry > Examples: “As Marty Mauser, a wannabe table tennis champion who dreams and deceives his way through his shamble of a life ... [Timothée Chalamet] injects his scenes with enough nervous energy to fuel a plane. Nowhere will you see a performance more frenetic or impressive.” — Ralph Jones, Vanity Fair, 9 Feb. 2026 Did you know? In modern use, frenetic can describe a focused and intense effort to meet a deadline, or dancing among a hyped-up crowd, but the word's Middle English predecessor, frenetik, had a narrower use: it was used to describe those exhibiting a severely disordered state of mind. If you trace frenetic back far enough, you'll find that it comes from Greek phrenîtis, a term referring to an inflammation of the brain. As for frenzied and frantic, they're not only synonyms of frenetic but relatives as well. Frantic comes from frenetik, and frenzied traces back to phrenîtis.
As Donald Trump flings the world into an energy crisis with his war in Iran, his administration is apparently trying to resurrect the ghosts of past environmental catastrophes with deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico and an oil pipeline off the coast of California. Rachel Maddow looks at how Donald Trump's fast talk and gaslighting can't change the reality of the mess he has made in the Strait of Hormuz as allies resist his bullying and rivals and opportunists take advantage of him to enrich themselves. Donald Trump's avoidance of accountability or even having to give any real answers on his decision to go to war against Iran may be coming to an end as Senate Democrats are poised to bring the business of the Senate to a grinding halt by forcing a wave of votes on U.S. military action in Iran. Senator Cory Booker talks with Rachel Maddow about Trump's handling of his attack on Iran and the questions Senate Democrats want answered. And the disaster at the Department of Homeland Security did not end with the firing of Kristi Noem. Wall Street Journal reporter Michelle Hackman discusses with Rachel. Want more of Rachel? In this episode of Crime Bit with Danelle Hallan, we look into the 2015 disappearance of 29-year-old Jesse Farber from Tamaqua, Pennsylvania. After days of unusual behavior and missed work, Jesse called his partner Rachel on August 11 saying he was being chased by 10 to 11 coyotes and needed help, then the line went dead and he was never found. Search teams combed Sharp Mountain, where coal pits and air shafts made the terrain dangerous, but no trace turned up. Later items believed to be his were reported in the woods, raising questions about an accident, a hallucination, or possible outside involvement. Jesse remains missing.

This week, the White House leaked plans to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies for some of the millions of people who stand to lose out from their expiration. But that's on ice after Republicans declared it a nonstarter. That could hurt them in the midterms, and oddly, it comes as President Trump just exploded in a wild tirade about the elections. He falsely ranted that Democrats will open our borders and unleash DEI, and urged the Indiana GOP to hurry up and gerrymander to stop Democrats. Meanwhile, Republicans tell Punchbowl News that they're losing the House, that resignations are coming, and that “morale has never been lower.” But if so, why not renew ACA subsidies to try to save yourselves, Republicans? We talked to New Republic staff writer Monica Potts about her good new piece on the GOP predicament. We discuss the roots of GOP anti-ACA hatred, why Republicans bank on election-rigging, and how it all explains GOP plutocratic politics in the Trump era. Looking for More from the DSR Network? Londinium 91 AD: The Aging Emperor's Urgency. Gaius and Germanicus discuss the physical and mental state of emperor Trump, noting his senior age and frantic, restless pace as potentially signs of an aging brain or alternatively adrenaline and confidence. Germanicus believes the emperor is acutely self-aware of his limited time, driven by tremendous brutal urgency to secure a lasting legacy including fiscal stability, border control, and eliminating principles like DEI. However, the stress of this frantic pace combined with age could cloud his judgment, making him more impulsive or desperate. The emperor's focus on revenge cycles, such as indicting former directors, is typical of historical emperors against their enemies. Germanicus worries this could lead to physical decline and reckless action. A critical marker of a republic's collapse into an emperor system is when the incoming president pursues and imprisons his predecessor, an easy push into civil war seen in places like Brazil. They conclude the transition is quietly happening, with the question of whether the U.S. will experience violence remaining unknown. 81 BCE SULLA Retry
Read this episode: mikekim.com/foundational-frantic Watch this on YouTube » This week's episode is a bit shorter because I'm preparing for a live training later this week on How to Write and Market a Bestselling Book (register below). My thoughts for this week: Just because the work is quiet doesn't mean it's not important. This really just boils down to a fight we all face: foundational vs. frantic. Just like the autumn season here in the Northeast U.S. has a purpose, it's vital to define the purpose of the season you're in. You define it. Take agency over it. My definition for Q4: depth of execution, not volume of activity. You might be in a different season. Good. All I'm saying is: define it.
