In today's Daily Fix:In light of Sony's lawsuit, megapublisher Tencent has changed some of the assets on the Steam page for Light of Motiram. The game fell into Sony's crosshairs for looking a lot like their Horizon Zero Dawn games, and judging by some of those marketing assets, Sony might have a case. Tencent has changed the description and some of the art featuring a female protagonist that looks an awful lot like Horizon's Aloy, as well as easing up on mentions of giant mechanical beasts. In other news, Bethesda's Starfield may finally be giving fans what they want: the ability to fly between planets. Although not officially announced, the new 'feature' won't be exactly like No Man's Sky's key feature of letting you take off from a planet's surface, fly into space, through the atmosphere of another planet, and onto that surface without an obvious loading screen. Starfield is getting a PS5 port sometime next year, and could see some new feaures added, like the aforementioned 'flying between planets' ability. And finally, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick is promsing BioShock 4 will come out, despite recent news that the game had failed an internal review after years of development.

I just may, whaddya say? Comic-Con came and went this year, and maybe because the MCU and DCU were so muted, but there were still some good announcements. Xbox says game pass revenue is up, so is it profitable? Wolfenstein is heading to TV, and EA says no to $80. Air Bud is returning and I have serious questions, South Park takes time in its return, Star Trek goes all in on Comic Con, plus reviews of Happy Gilmore 2 and Fantastic Four!

Hi everyone, happy Tuesday! I'm not a huge gamer, but even I know what a big deal Ashly Burch is in the video game world. She has voiced so many beloved and iconic characters, including Aloy in Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West, Chloe Price in Life is Strange and Tiny Tina in Borderlands 2 and 3. She's also had a fascinating career as an actor, writer and director starting when she created Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin'? with her brother Anthony and progressing to writing and/or directing on Side Quest, Mythic Quest and Adventuretime, among others. She is crazy talented and also so smart when it comes to her work and the future of the industry. We talk about AI, mental health and what it was like to grow up in Arizona the daughter of an immigrant and fall in love with video games. I had such a good time talking to Ashly and I hope you enjoy our conversation! This episode was recorded as part of a live panel event at Pelican House on the 13 April 2025 celebrating the London launch of Max's board game Billionaires and Guillotines, published by Pluto Press. In this episode we talked about the role of games and play in the coming revolution; the game mechanics of Billionaires & Guillotines and what its format might offer players; why Max chose the guillotine as the instrument of abolition; and we even played a game role-playing a war profiteer, an aristocrat and a tech overlord.Danny Dorling is Oxford geography professor and bestselling author of books including Seven Children: Inequality and Britain's Next Generation and Peak Injustice: Solving Britain's Inequality Crisis.Meg Jayanth is an award-winning narrative and game designer whose credits include 80 Days, Sunless Sea and Horizon Zero Dawn.Max Haiven is Canada Research Chair in the Radical Imagination, writer of books including Palm Oil: The Grease of Empire and Revenge Capitalism: The Ghosts of Empire, the Demons of Capital, and the Settling of Unpayable Debts.Against the Fascist Game is the second season of The Exploits of Play, a podcast about games and capitalism. Join host Max Haiven and producer Faye Harvey as they interview game designers, critical theorists and grassroots activists struggling with games to understand, confront and abolish the rising threat of fascism in our times. We ask questions including: how is the far-right around the world using games as platforms for ideology, recruiting and violence, both close to home and around the world? How have vicious reactionary politics emerged from a form of capitalism where most people feel trapped in an unwinnable game? What do fascism and antifascism mean today? And what role, if any do play and games have in confronting the fascist threat and creating a new world? The Exploits of Play is a production of Weird Economies, a platform for exploring the intricacies and excesses of our economic imaginaries, in cooperation with RiVAL: The ReImagining Value Action Lab. He works with publishers, platforms and studios of all sizes to transform their game development process, and build product strategies that combines player data with creativity. He work from ideation to post-launch in order to de-risk game development, and make games players love.Prior to this he was a senior user researcher for PlayStation and worked on many of their top European titles, including Horizon Zero Dawn, SingStar, the LittleBigPlanet series and the PlayStation VR lineup.Steve started the Games User Research mentoring scheme, which has linked hundreds of students with industry professionals from top games companies such as Sony, EA, Valve, Ubisoft and Microsoft. He wrote the bestselling book How To Be A Games User Researcher to share the expertise needed to work in the games industry. He regularly speaks at games industry conferences and on podcasts about games user research + playtesting, and has been recognised as a member of BAFTA. He also wrote the bestselling book Building User Research Teams, and helps teams build impactful research practice in-house.In our conversation, we discuss:* The evolution of Steve's career from early days at PlayStation to running his own games UX consultancy.* The difference between research in games vs. traditional tech, especially around the lack of discovery work.* How to measure subjective experiences like “fun,” and why that starts by redefining what “fun” even means.* The influence of secrecy, creative ownership, and marketing pressure on research methods in the games industry.* Real-world methods used in games UX, like mass playtesting labs and segment-based multiplayer analysis. Some takeaways:* Research in games is heavily evaluative. Unlike traditional UX, which often starts with uncovering user needs, games UX usually kicks in once there's a playable prototype. Because the “user need” in games is often just “make it fun,” research is focused more on assessing emotional impact and usability than on early-stage exploration.* Measuring fun is both subjective and contextual. Teams often ask, “Is this fun?”—but that question is too broad to act on. Steve explains that researchers must first help define what kind of fun is intended, whether that's emotional engagement, replay behavior, or challenge. Only then can appropriate metrics or qualitative signals be applied.* Creative ownership adds complexity to stakeholder management. Games are seen as artistic work. Designers may be deeply emotionally invested in their ideas, which can make it harder to embrace critical feedback. This makes relationship-building, empathy, and framing feedback constructively especially important in games UX.* Secrecy shapes everything, from methods to sampling. Due to high financial stakes and aggressive marketing timelines, games researchers often can't test publicly. This leads to lab-based studies with high participant control. Mass playtesting labs (20–80 people at once) are common for running controlled, large-scale tests without leaking content.* Toxicity and matchmaking need research too. Games with multiplayer or social components must test how players interact, especially when strangers are thrown together online. Teams look at voice/chat features, segmentation by playstyle, and matchmaking fairness to reduce toxicity and create balanced experiences.Where to find Steve:* Website* LinkedIn* Twitter/X* BlueSkyInterested in sponsoring the podcast?Interested in sponsoring or advertising on this podcast? Hopefully this one delivers—we're all overdue for a real look at what that reboot's going to be. In other updates, Horizon Zero Dawn's planned TV series isn't happening anymore. Creative differences reportedly got in the way, so now it's being reimagined as a movie instead. Honestly, could be a better fit. There's also chatter around the Switch 2 and what it even is at this point. Hades 2 is launching first on Switch and PC, which makes sense—but it does raise the question: do we even consider the Switch 2 a full console anymore? Or is it basically a high-powered handheld? The lines are getting blurrier, that's for sure.Let's get into the show!By joining our Patreon community for ONLY $1.00 per month, you'll also enjoy these exclusive benefits:Early Access: Be the first to listen to our episodes as soon as they're ready. Horizon Zero Dawn and its sequel Horizon Forbidden West have had an uphill battle to become some of the most successful AAA open world games. The first entry released alongside The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and the follow-up came out just ahead of Elden Ring, two games that are not just direct competitors for the Horizon series, but also genre re-defining titles. Yet, much like the series' protagonist, Aloy, the Horizon games have persisted. They have eventually found their audience and have delivered some of the best Open World gaming the current generation has seen as of 2025. While the Horizon games on their face are a visual feast focused on hunting down robotic dinosaurs in a stunning post apocalypse, what lies beneath the surface is what kept Bryan and Clint coming back for more. A sweeping sci-fi story with ambitious and surprising writing drives Horizon's cybernetic heart forward. That and a surprisingly deep combat system that forces you to use all parts of the robotic buffalo. In this podcast Clint and Bryan discuss the sweeping story told across both Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West before focusing in on the finer points of the more recent entry. So grab your bow and spear and tune your focus in to Pixelated Playgrounds as we discuss the Horizon Series!Three Word Reviews:Bryan - Defying Human NatureClint - Giant Robot Dinosaurs!

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes Last week, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Jason Momoa, the actor who famously played the title role in the billion-dollar grossing Aquaman film, has signed on to portray the character Lobo in the upcoming DC Studios film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Momoa, no stranger to Warner Bros or DC, has long been campaigning for the role of the intergalactic biker bounty hunter who first debuted in comics in 1983. Elsewhere, filmmaker Matt Reeves, broke his silence on The Batman II delay situation while attending the Golden Globes this weekend, saying, “I can tell you that we'll be shooting this year. We're doing something where the story continues from, but I hope that people will be surprised by.” During a recent interview with GQ, Andrew Garfield, the Amazing Spider-Man himself, dispelled rumors that he has signed on to reprise his role in the upcoming fourth Marvel Studios' Tom Holland-led Spider-Man film. Ever self-aware, the actor acknowledged the weight his objections hold, given his track record, having been in the exact situation prior to No Way Home's release, saying, “I'm gonna disappoint you - Yeah, no. But I know no one's gonna trust anything I say from now on.” We might be light on Marvel news this week, but Sunday evening's 82nd Golden Globes Awards ceremony saw many an MCU friend and foe in attendance. Kathryn Hahn was nominated for her role in Agatha All Along, Sebastian Stan was twice nominated and won once, and Captain America Brave New World stars, Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford took the stage to present an award, as did MCU alumni Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum. Now that you got your Marvel fix, let's talk about some winners and snubs: on the TV side of things, the winners circle featured usual suspects – FX's Shogun and The Bear, still being awarded as a comedy despite the protests, Max's Hacks, and newcomer Baby Reindeer from Netflix snagging a couple of wins. Also worthy of note: Colin Farrell, narrowly avoiding a snub, took home the sole award for HBO's The Penguin. Netflix and A24 ruled the evening as far as film is concerned, with Emilia Perez and The Brutalist being highly awarded, although Wicked refused to be relegated to the sidelines, taking home the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Award. Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King led the first weekend of the new year with $23.8 million domestically, reaching $476.4 million globally. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 followed closely with $21.2 million in the U.S. and a worldwide total of $336.3 million. Tom Holland and Zendaya are engaged – as revealed by the ring she wore during the Golden Globes Red Carpet Peacock is developing a film reboot of the 2011 NBC series Grimm, with Drop Dead Diva creator Josh Berman writing and executive producing alongside the original show's co-creators and showrunners. HBO has released a new short teaser trailer for The Last of Us season 2 and confirmed that the series will begin streaming in April. Sony has announced a movie adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn in collaboration with PlayStation Studios and Columbia Pictures, the studio behind 2022's Uncharted. While no release date has been set, the film will bring Guerrilla Games' post-apocalyptic adventure starring machine hunter Aloy to the big screen. Jacob Elordi is in early negotiations to replace Paul Mescal in Ridley Scott's The Dog Stars. Mark L. Smith and Christopher Wilkinson wrote the script for the 20th Century Studios film, which adapts Peter Heller's 2012 apocalyptic novel of the same name. Disney+ has greenlit a pilot for a TV series adaptation of Louis Sachar's beloved novel "Holes." The project follows in the footsteps of Disney's 2003 film version of the book, though no further details about the potential series have been revealed yet.
