On The Cycling Podcast Féminin this month, Rose Manley, Denny Gray and Rebecca Charlton head back to their virtual cabana to talk about everything that happened in the Spanish racing block. With a win at Vuelta a Burgos, Marlen Reusser's ascendency continues. The Movistar rider has put a difficult 2024 behind her to become one of the very best GC stage race contenders in the world. Plus we can't agree on whether to put Team SD Worx's lacklustre GC stage racing campaign in Burgos and Itzulia down to overreaching team orders or plain old bad luck. And there are some new names to look out for in the peloton, with riders like Mie Bjørndal Ottestad and Celia Géry enjoying breakthrough performances. For this month's mini feature, we speak to two Irish riders who have joined the World Tour this season - Lara Gillespie of UAE-ADQ and Mia Griffin of Roland. The pair formed half of the quartet that made history at the Paris Olympics as Ireland's first ever female pursuit team, a feat all the more remarkable considering the country is yet to have an indoor velodrome. We hear from both riders as they turn their attentions to the road. Also on the agenda, week-long Nienke Vinke Fan Club celebrations, Denny's Union Jack bowler hat and how the TCP Féminin budget REALLY gets spent. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by Topo Athletic, we are joined by Jonathan Thomas, known on trail as Janis Joplin. Janis Joplin is a thru-hiker, FKT record holder, D1 collegiate track and field athlete, former news cameraman, Boston Marathon bombing survivor, CDT trail angel, and owner of Exotic Pax, an innovative, vest-style backpack for thru-hikers handmade in Chama, New Mexico. This episode covers a lot of ground, including the many times he's narrowly escaped death, what is was like growing up in New Orleans, being a D1 collegiate athlete, what brought him into the world of FKTs and how FKT athletes are more possessive over their records than they might lead on, what it's like to run an outfitter in a sleepy CDT town, and the inspiration and process that goes into his unique backpacks. We wrap the show with a reversal on the closure of a campground key to JMT and PCT hikers, our takes on who'd win in a fight between 100 men and one silverback gorilla, and the Triple Crown of items you geniously stash in many strategic locations. Border post facilities set up since Brexit to handle import checks could now be scaled down or even dismantled. The UK's new deal with the EU promises progress towards an agreement to reduce the paperwork and border checks involved in trading foods like meat and dairy. It also includes a deal on fishing which would allow EU boats to fish in British waters for a further 12 years. The Scottish Fishermen's Federation has called it "a horror show", but the DEFRA Secretary, Steve Reed, says it's a "reasonably good deal" for UK fishing. In its manifesto the Labour party promised to end what it described as “the ineffective badger cull". The Government now says it's working on a revised TB eradication strategy, which includes increased badger vaccination and a national wildlife surveillance programme to better understand the disease. So how much difference could that make? And a new set of targets to tackle climate change have been recommended to Scottish Government ministers, replacing those scrapped last year. A report from the Climate Change Committee suggests effectively delaying short term progress by six years, but keeping Scotland on track to meet its long-term goal of net zero emissions by 2045.Presented by Anna Hill Produced by Heather Simons

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by LMNT, we are joined by Niki DiGaetano, known on trail as Phoenix. In addition to being a long distance backpacker, the bulk of today's conversation centers around Niki's work as a death doula. We learn, of course, what that work entails, how her experiences working with those at the end of their lives have reframed how she lives hers, advice for those currently processing the death of a loved one, dealing with anxieties around death, and much more. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, and brought to you by Topo Athletic, we're coming to you live from Austin, Texas with our guest, Paul Magnanti, aka Mags, aka Pmags. A longtime co-host of The Trail Show and a triple crowner, Pmags has spent decades exploring trails across the country, with a special love for the Southwest. We dive into the future of public lands, hear some of his hot takes on gear, including his love for 100-weight fleece pullovers, his beef with sun hoodies, and where hikers tend to overspend, and get a look at his go-to "snivel gear." Pmags also shares stories from some of his lesser-known adventures, including the Ring the Peak Trail, A Walk Across Southern Utah, the Northern New Mexico Loop, the Grand Moab Route, and the Southeast Utah Group Circuit. We wrap out the show with a rundown of the best sections of the Appalachian Trail (spoiler: #1 shocked our live audience), a "stupid thing of the week" (lost phone edition), a "gross or not gross" (chapstick edition), and the triple crown of trail towns. In this special Arrivée episode, Rose Manley and Rebecca Charlton look back at the first Grand Tour of the year for the women's peloton, the Vuelta Femenina. The race marks the first World Tour stage race to see top rivals Anna Van der Breggen and Demi Vollering go head-to-head. Vollering may have had the edge so far this season but Van der Breggen has found further form since her comeback. And then there's fellow SD Worx alumnus Marlen Reusser who separated the two Dutch rivals on the podium at Setmana Valenciana earlier in the year. So where will the fabled red jersey land this time? The first Grand Tour of the 2025 season is also our tenth Giro d‘Italia on the ground with daily episodes. We kick things off here, with Daniel Friebe, Brian Nygaard and Rob Hatch looking ahead to the next three weeks of action, first in Albania and then Italy. First, we examine a route that may lack summit finishes but should deliver excitement from the middle of stage one. The riders on the startline should also see to that, particularly the stacked field of GC contenders led by pre-race favourites Primož Roglič and Juan Ayuso. We also meet a new addition to the podcast team for the Giro, Michele Pelacci, and hear more about what we've got in store over the next few weeks. The Giro d'Italia rolls out from Albania on Friday and in doing so will introduce cycling fans to one of the more mysterious and probably misunderstood countries on the continent of Europe. We, too, knew very little about the 'Land of Eagles' but, in January this year, were invited on a remarkable treasure hunt that began with a listener's enigmatic direct message into Daniel Friebe's Twitter inbox. The story that then revealed itself - without giving too much away here - was one of an epic cycling journey that also turned into an astonishing voyage of self-discovery, into the so-called ‘Accursed Mountains' of northern Albania. This KM0 is exceptionally available to all listeners, whether Friends of The Cycling Podcast or not. See below for details on how to become a Friend of The Cycling Podcast and thereby help fund our daily, on-the-ground coverage at the Grand Tours and output throughout the rest of the cycling season. As per tradition, together with our friends at Dvine Cellars in London, we're presenting a selection of six wines showcasing the same terroir that the 2025 Giro d'Italia will visit in May. And, as we've done in other years, we've asked Greg Andrews and Luciana Girotto of Dvine to talk us through the selection ahead of the race. If you're not into wine, this is NOT the podcast for you! We have our full XL race preview coming on Tuesday, so hold tight for that. If, however, you do want to hear what Luciana, Greg and Daniel have to say, stay tuned and head to https://dvinecellars.com/products/the-cycling-podcast-giro-ditalia-2025 to make an order. The wines in the case are listed below. Unfortunately, Dvine's cases are still only available to UK listeners but in many instances you will be able to find similar wines, from the same regions, wherever you are. Please also enjoy in moderation! The wines (in Giro route order): Salice Salentino Il Pumo 2021, San Marzano, Puglia Vigneti Tardis, Martedì Paestum Rosso, Campania Lambrusco del Fondatore 2023, Cleto Chiarli, Emilia-Romagna Incrocio Manzoni Costa degli Angeli 2022/23, Casa Paolin, Veneto Selida Gewürztraminer 2023, Tramin, Alto-Adige Coste delle Sesia 2022/23, Orbello, Tenute Sella, Piedmont Follow us on social media: Twitter @cycling_podcast Instagram @thecyclingpodcast Friends of the Podcast Sign up as a Friend of the Podcast at thecyclingpodcast.com to listen to new special episodes every month plus a back catalogue of more than 300 exclusive episodes. Daniel Friebe and Lionel Birnie are your guides through the latest headlines and talking points from the world of pro cycling, this week assisted by Tudor Pro Cycling ace Larry Warbasse, fresh from his successful week at the Tour of the Alps. We look back at the latest Tadej Pogačar tour de force at Liège-Bastogne-Liège and invite Larry to speculate about the rest of Pogačar's season. There's also a trip to Coorevits Corner, where Remco Evenepoel's underwhelming performance in La Doyenne gives Hugo food for thought. In the final part of the episode, Larry takes us inside Michael Storer's masterful performance at the Tour of the Alps. We also ask: how far can ‘Storerčar' go at the Giro? In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by Topo Atheltic, we are joined by Jay “Meat Grinder” France. Meat Grinder is a thru-hiker, author, and 31-year veteran of the Air Force, having completed 10 deployments and graduated from Army Ranger School in the process. Jay details his military background, including some key similarities and differences relative to thru-hiking, how he used vlogging as a way to stay in touch with his sons on trail, and the hilarious blood nipple origin story of his trail name. Meat Grinder also recently served as a volunteer advocate for Hike The Hill, an annual event where trail advocates meet with U.S. Congress to promote policies and funding that support trails, public lands, and outdoor recreation. Jay offers some important advice for those who want to advocate for public lands, especially relevant in today's climate. We wrap the show with the top AT hostels, our triple crown of airplane snacks, and two completely unnecessary improvements to the Appalachian Trail. Rose Manley and Rebecca Charlton dissect the final Classic of the 2025 Spring season, Liège-Bastogne-Liège. With the first two Ardennes Classics - Amstel Gold Race and Flèche Wallonne - going to unexpected winners, all of the big contenders were looking for the victory in Liège. Puck Pieterse arrived looking to get her second win of the week, whilst Demi Vollering was hunting her first victory since Strade Bianche in March. Plus Anna van der Breggen returns from illness, looking to become the most decorated winner of the race having been victorious twice before. But with the stage racing season upon us, every rider will be vying for their last chance for a precious Spring Classics win. Join Rose Manley and Denny Gray as they pick apart all the action from this year's Flèche Wallonne Féminine. After a surprise result for a late breakaway at Amstel Gold Race, everything was to play for at the second race of the Ardennes Classics. Despite a much-hyped expected comeback to the race, seven time winner Anna Van der Breggen didn't take to the startline after suffering from illness last week. But with defending champion Kasia Niewiadoma and 2023 champion Demi Vollering already proving to be in top form this season, the race was set to be fiercely contested. Or could a new champion be announced at the top of the infamous Mur de Huy? Sponsored by Laka The Cycling Podcast's coverage of the spring Classics is supported by Laka. Join Daniel Friebe and Lionel Birnie for their post-race analysis following the best three minutes of the cycling season (that takes place on a Wednesday afternoon, in spring, in Wallonia). Yes, it's the annual uphill cheeseroll competition (copyright Friebos). But just how far can we stretch the cheese analogies? What would win? A giant Camembert or 30 Mini Babybels? And what has New Year's Eve in New York got to do with anything? There's serious tactical discussion and lots of nonsensical talk about sunglasses too. You wouldn't expect anything else. The Cicle Classic is England's answer to the spring classics. Paris-Roubaix is the Hell of the North so perhaps this ought to be known as the Beast in the East. The race celebrates its 20th anniversary this month, with the 2025 edition taking place on Sunday, April 27. Held in the East Midlands, the race criss-crosses the countryside, taking in rough, rutted farm tracks. If it was created today it would be considered a gravel race. The Tour of Flanders has the Koppenberg, Gent-Wevelgem has the Kemmelberg, Paris-Roubaix has the Arenberg – the Cicle Classic has Somerberg. Lionel Birnie explores the history and character of the UK's highest-ranked one-day race and hears from the founder Colin Clews who had the idea, Matt Stephens, who was third in the first edition two decades ago, Conor Dunne, who won in 2016 and James McCallum, who was on the podium in arguably the most dramatic and certainly the muddiest edition in 2012. Daniel Friebe and Lionel Birnie are back to examine the latest headlines and talking points from the world of pro cycling, this week aided by TNT commentator Rob Hatch. The Classics have migrated (slightly) south to the hills of Limburg and the Ardennes, with the Brabantse Pijl and Amstel Gold kicking off the final phase of the spring season last week. In the former, Remco Evenepoel completed a stunning return from injury to outsprint Wout Van Aert. Amstel saw an even more surprising denouement, with Mattias Skjelmose proving too quick - just - for Tadej Pogačar and Evenepoel. We ponder what this all means for the remainder of the Ardennes Classics, with a detour via Coorevits Corner. There's also a look back at the life and times of British cycling legend Barry Hoban.
