A Marine Corps Veteran on Hiking to Heal from PTSD and Reclaim His Peace, ft. Gabe "Wing It" Vasquez (BPR #334)

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by LMNT, we're joined by Gabe Vasquez, known on trail as "Wing It." Gabe is a U.S. Marine Corps combat veteran, long-distance kayaker and cyclist, and the first known Mexican-American to complete the Triple Crown.  Gabe opens up about his time in the Marines and the challenges that followed- PTSD, becoming addicted to prescription meds to manage the PTSD in addition to anxiety and depression, losing friends to suicide after their service, and night terrors. In his efforts to heal, Gabe turned to adventure. He began by paddling the Mississippi with a friend, then took on a PCT thru-hike, followed by eight consecutive years of long-distance backpacking, paddling, and cycling. Gabe shares how that time in nature helped him reclaim his peace, and why he's happier today than he's ever been. Worth noting- this episode includes graphic descriptions of PTSD and suicide. If these topics are sensitive or triggering for you, please take care while listening. We wrap the show with news of a pair of fatal bear attacks near the Ozark Highlands Trail, a partially blind grandmother who thru-hiked the PCT- averaging nearly 40 miles a day in the process, the definitive etiquette around holding doors for strangers, and the triple crown of the worst phrases and expressions. And we're back! After a nice, long, 4-day Thanksgiving weekend, we are back in the studio and turning the page on the calendar to December! Which means a list of things to look forward to in the upcoming month, including movie releases, TV premieres, sporting events, and all the holidays! Speaking of holidays, we started the show by recapping our Thanksgiving celebrations with our families and talking about all that snow we got this past weekend. In sports, the Bucks finally won a game this weekend after losing seven in a row, the Pack got a nice victory on Turkey day, a look at the rest of the Week 13 action, Josh Allen setting an NFL record yesterday against the Steelers, and a recap of the Badger basketball action from the last few days. Elsewhere in sports, several coaching positions in the NCAA have been filled as the season draws to a close, and if you're living in the area of Chicago…the coach of the Bears earned you a free Wiener tomorrow at the Wiener Circle! We let you know what's on TV today/tonight and we discussed how much money Mariah Carey makes every year on her massive Christmas hit, "All I Want For Christmas Is You". Today is apparently the last day to eat your Thanksgiving leftovers before they start to spoil! Check out this story about a mail carrier that helped save a guy's life last year & just celebrated Thanksgiving with his family, and take a look at this story about an animal shelter in Philly that had a great feast on turkey day for all their adoptable animals! And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a guy who got into an argument at Thanksgiving & burned his family's house down, a viral video of a Thanksgiving table that decided it was no longer going to participate, a guy in Maine who broke into an apartment & opened all their Christmas gifts before taking a nap on their couch, and apparently nude cruises are becoming more & more popular.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Oi you, loser! Or should that be winner? Yes on this month's episode of The Cycling Podcast Féminin, we discuss our picks for the winners and losers of the season. Our very own losers Rose Manley, Denny Gray and Rebecca Charlton pick out a few notable performances – both for good and bad reasons – from a season that threw up a number of surprises. We ask who faired best and worst from the big transfer shake up which saw many big name riders find new teams and responsibilities. For our mini feature this month we look at the rise of African cycling in light of Team Amani's announcement that they will become the first ever Africa-based Women's Continental team. We hear about the challenges facing African riders from visa complications to community stigma and find out about Team Amani's ambitions to make it to the Tour de France Femmes by 2028. Listen in to hear from team mentor Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio, partnerships director Xylon Van Eyck and Team Amani star rider Xaverine Nirere who lit up the World Championships time trial in Rwanda this year. We also take a look at next year's Tour de France Femmes course which covers nine stages from Switzerland to Nice. Also on the agenda: Anna Van der Breggen plays the piano, Denny embraces his inner beatnik poet and a wet ffff… firework. In this week's episode of The Cycling Podcast, Daniel Friebe and Tudor Pro Cycling stalwart Larry Warbasse discuss some of the more intriguing and controversial news stories of the last few weeks.  With most teams about to gather for their first pre-season training camps, some also face an uncertain future. The long-mooted Lotto-Intermarché merger still hasn't been confirmed, raising questions about who will even be in the WorldTour in 2026. The UCI's introduction of a promotion and relegation system was supposed to ensure that such matters were decided primarily on sporting merit. With the latest three-year cycle having just concluded, Daniel and Larry discuss whether the UCI needs to go back to the drawing board.  We also discuss what was formerly Israel Premier Tech's new identity, Marcel Kittel's eye-catching recent comments about doping and why exactly the pro peloton has got so much faster since Covid. A new re-imagining of The Wind in the Willows told from the margins. Set in a timeless, Kenneth Grahame-inspired England, the drama looks up from weasel-height at class, home and who gets to belong when the Wild Wood is being carved up by developers. Narrated by Penelope Wilton, it blends the familiar riverbank world with the pressures of eviction, empty grand houses and power concentrated in a few determined hands.Kit, a young weasel, is watching her family slide into precarity as the scrubland around their burrow is sold off and the criminal Chief Weasel tightens his grip. With her best friends - Portly the otter and Radar the bat - Kit's world collides with Mole, Ratty, Badger and other classic characters, while a grand house standing empty becomes a magnet for grievance and opportunity. What follows is a fight not for glory but for a place to live: shifting alliances, contested territory and small acts of care that build a community where suspicion says it cannot exist. Welcome to Friday! A couple of days off…then a short week…and then it's Thanksgiving! I don't know why, but I feel more excited for turkey day this year than I have been in awhile. It's not like we've got anything special planned. But for some reason, I'm a bit amped for the gluttony! Speaking of over-indulging on Thanksgiving, I took a look at the dinner's impact on your health, and also the things that make your home perfect for hosting Thanksgiving with the family/friends. Let you know what's on TV this weekend and what's new in theaters. Plus, Doc joined me just after 8am thanks to County Materials in Holmen to talk about this weekend's F1 race in Vegas and we also chatted about some of the shows coming to the area in the next few months. In sports, the Bills lost to the Texans last night to kick off Week 12 in the NFL, an update on Josh Jacob's condition, the Packers get flexed in Week 14, the Bucks lost in overtime last night to the 76ers, the Badger men's basketball is at #9 BYU this afternoon, and the football team takes the field against #21 Illinois tomorrow. Elsewhere in sports, Alexander Ovechkin continues to set records, and the Athletic Director at Baylor has stepped down and is under investigation….for something. Is it too soon for Christmas music? I would say yes…especially if it's constant. Now, if you toss in a rando Xmas tune every couple of hours…that's fine. But 24 hours of holiday music is too much for me right now. An update on a Superman comic that three brothers found in their mom's attic after she passed. Bath & Body Works is attempting to make a NYC subway smell like Christmas. A tip for saving money on your holiday shopping. And McDonald's is launching a new "Grinch" meal! Nice story about a senior couple who recently got married in the YMCA pool where they first met, and a pig on the loose is rescued by a couple who were looking for a companion for their pet pig. Today is "National Stuffing Day"…and it's also "Beaujolais Nouveau Day"…and "National Gingerbread Cookie Day". So celebrate accordingly! And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a #FloridaMan walking around buck nekkid, a hunter in Louisiana who came down from his tree stand only to get immediately attacked by an alligator, a few guys who tried to cash a $27 million check at a bank, a rich neighborhood in California banned pickleball at a local park because it was too loud, a dude in Seattle who ran from the cops and tried to change clothes in a thrift store to get-away, and a guy in Taiwan who ended up with a cup in his rear-end. In this week's episode of The Cycling Podcast, we revisit one of the most intriguing storylines of the late summer and autumn in the first instalment of a new KM0 series - Trapdoor - examining the fight to avoid relegation from the WorldTour.  First up is Astana and their miraculous recovery from a dire position a year ago. Exactly how did the recruitment of a data scientist, new bikes, a bit of ‘Moneyball' recruitment and a completely fresh approach to race planning revive a team that looked dead and buried twelve months ago? Maybe the key individual in the whole, miraculous process, the team's Head of Performance, Vasilis Anastopoulos, reveals many if not all of the secrets in this interview with Daniel Friebe.  Follow us on social media: Twitter @cycling_podcast Instagram @thecyclingpodcast Friends of the Podcast Sign up as a Friend of the Podcast at thecyclingpodcast.com to listen to new special episodes every month plus a back catalogue of more than 300 exclusive episodes. Back at it on a Monday! Successful weekend with some raking, a Harley ride, and the Christmas lights are up!!! In the news this morning, a winning Mega Millions ticket was sold on Friday, the FAA has lifted all restrictions on flights now that the government shutdown is over, and a grandfather is using his granddaughter to help him steal thousands of dollars in merchandise! In sports, the Packers beat the Giants yesterday, the Bucks split the weekend with a win on Friday and a loss on Saturday, Giannis helped the Lakers get the game ball for a rookie who scored his first NBA points, and the Badger football team stunk it up on the field on Saturday against #2 Indiana. Else where in sports, the Badger men's basketball team plays tonight, Aaron Rodgers may have broken his wrist yesterday, a Texas State Trooper is no longer welcome at college football games, and former Bucks player Patrick Beverley got arrested over the weekend. Let you know what's on TV today/tonight and talked about the halftime entertainment for the three NFL games on Thanksgiving. Couple of cool stories this morning - A city in Oklahoma that is allowing residents to pay off their unpaid parking tickets & overdue library fees by donating food to a local pantry, a woman in England who saved her golfing buddy's life when he had a heart attack, and a cameraman in Canada who had a random encounter with a brain surgeon and is now getting a life-changing treatment. Talked about how much the average American is going to spend on Thanksgiving this year, and also about this year's most dangerous toys! In this compelling episode of 90 Miles from Needles, host Chris Clarke explores the delicate balance of truth in natural environments and everyday life. With a focus on the impact of modern technology, Chris explores how misinformation, notably from AI-generated content, can distort our understanding of the natural world. He raises vital questions about the integrity of information and prompts listeners to reconsider how we consume media. This discussion extends to an examination of the timeless truths found within desert ecosystems, where reality remains unobscured by human interference. Chris eloquently contrasts the external world filled with "little lies" and the undeniable truths present in the desert's harsh yet honest environment. This episode emphasizes the importance of discernment in the digital age, encouraging listeners to seek authenticity and treasure the unembellished truth of natural landscapes. Key Takeaways: AI-generated content is increasingly sophisticated, making it challenging to distinguish between reality and fiction. Deserts serve as natural educators, offering unbiased truths and teaching resilience, adaptation, and harmony. Misinformation isn't limited to one side of the political spectrum; all individuals must critically assess their beliefs. The desert's inherent truthfulness contrasts with the often manipulated realities we encounter through media and politics. Understanding natural environments, like deserts, requires slowing down and embracing complexity without preconceptions. Notable Quotes: "The desert is pretty honest about limits." "When does an untruth become a lie? A lie requires intent." "The desert is pretty firm in its stance that reality is not optional." "Truth in the desert is slow, and if you want to catch it, you slow down, too." "The desert never asks us to pick one story or the other. It just presents the facts in all their complexity." Our last day together for a few weeks as Jean gets ready to fly to Europe! In the news this morning, the latest on the Mega Millions drawing for tonight, more & more flights getting canceled, and say goodbye to the Farmers' Almanac! In sports, the Broncos beat the Raiders last night to kick off Week 10 in the NFL, the Badger men's basketball team plays tonight while the Badger football team plays tomorrow. Drew Brees will be replacing Mark Sanchez as a full-time NFL analyst for FoxSports, and the tragic news about Marshawn Kneeland. We let you know what's on TV and in theaters this weekend, and we got Doc on the phone for his final racing report of the year thanks to County Materials in Holmen. Campbell's has already released it's annual "State Of The Sides" report and for the second year in a row…stuffing > mashed potatoes! In other food-related news, the newest TikTok "trend" is apparently just eating a bunch of beans. Elsewhere in sports, former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown was recently arrested in Dubai and extradited to the US on attempted murder charges. Also, Matt Kalil's allegedly massive penis is burning up the internet right meow. We had a new "Karen of the Day" who got very upset when a passenger in her Uber asked to roll the window down & play some music. Cool story about a retirement party for a very dedicated employee at a McDonald's in Tampa. Another "trend" that's making the rounds right now is the 3 By 3 method to improve your overall health. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a robbery at a cashless bank, a dude in Minnesota who was allegedly running a chainsaw without any clothes on, a woman in Illinois who was found hiding in the wall between two businesses, an update on that drunk substitute gym teacher in Muskego, a couple who were having sex while driving on the Autobahn in Germany at 90MPH, a #FloridaMan who threw his wad of chewing tobacco in the face of a 7-Eleven clerk because there wasn't any TP in the bathroom, and an escaped pet pig attacked a woman in Buffalo!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Another day in the mid-50's as we get ready for colder temps this weekend. It's Hypothetical Thursday, so we once again asked each other hypothetical questions. Jean's question for Brian was: "Who was the most influential person in your life?". Brian's question for Jean was: "Would you rather fly First-Class every time you fly & stay in a 1-star hotel...or stay in a 5-star hotel whenever you go somewhere & have the middle seat in economy?" Office Cora joined us just after 8am to let us know what she's up to this weekend in the 715. Her hypothetical question for us was: "If you could only have one condiment for the rest of your life, which one would you choose?" We also let you know what's on TV today/tonight, talked about season 2 of KPop Demon Hunters, and Miss Piggy's stand-alone movie. In sports, Week 10 in the NFL kicks off tonight with Thursday Night Football, the Bucks are off until Friday, Giannis got a black eye and it's origins are….interesting, and a look at the Badger men's basketball schedule and the Badger football schedule. Great story about a heroic teen in Florida who recently helped save a bunch of people who were stuck in their vehicles during a flash flood. And an absolutely heart-warming story about a 93 year-old man who used his smelly socks to help track down & find his lost dog. In case you missed it, Kraft recently released a new flavor of it's Mac-n-Cheese, and people have strong reactions to it. Elsewhere in sports, Alexander Ovechkin scored his 900th career goal, Kyler Murray is going on the IL, and CJ Strout is going to sit this weekend for the Texans. October just recently wrapped up, and many of you probably went to a wedding. October is the most popular month for nuptials, and we looked a list of ways you might have been rude at a wedding. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a guy who REALLY needed to use a bathroom stall at a grocery store, a hospital in Maine is apologizing for sending letters to a bunch of LIVING patients…telling them that they are actually DEAD, a council meeting in Scotland that had to edit the recording of a recent meeting after someone went to the bathroom without turning off their camera, the benefits of having sex in the morning, and a drunk substitute teacher in WI.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

With the 2025 road racing season now firmly in the rear view mirror, join Daniel Friebe and Lionel Birnie for a freewheeling ramble through some of the big stories that have hit the headlines in the past couple of weeks. We start by discussing the fragile nature of survival at World Tour level with the news that the Australian team Jayco-Alula came within days of possibly folding, and the delays to confirmation that two Belgian teams, Lotto and Intermarché, intend to become one. Where does that leave the riders, especially Intermarché's biggest star Biniam Girmay? Then we indulge in a bit of off-season speculation and wonder what Tadej Pogačar's 2026 season might look like, particularly with a number of race organisers making changes seemingly to entice the SlovAlien to ride. The Vuelta a España starting in his adopted home town of Monaco is not a particularly subtle overture and it seem an appealing prospect but, as we discuss, the picture is more complicated than that. Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every day. Today's shout-out goes to Troy Longen from Badger, MN. Thank you for your partnership with us through Project23. Our text today is Judges 11:1-3. Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty warrior, but he was the son of a prostitute. Gilead was the father of Jephthah. And Gilead's wife also bore him sons. And when his wife's sons grew up, they drove Jephthah out and said to him, "You shall not have an inheritance in our father's house, for you are the son of another woman." Then Jephthah fled from his brothers and lived in the land of Tob, and worthless fellows collected around Jephthah and went out with him. — Judges 11:1-3 Jephthah enters our story under a dark cloud of shame—born of a prostitute (by the adulterous afair of Gilead), he is rejected by his half-brothers, and pushed out of his father's household. He ends up in Tob, surrounded by a gang of deadbeat outsiders with nowhere else to belong. From a natural perspective, Jephthah looked disqualified for any kind of leadership. But God often works through the unlikely, shaping leaders out of rejects. The very rejection that pushed Jephthah away was the tool God would use to prepare him for Israel's deliverance. Rejection stings. Family chaos always cuts deep. Being told you don't belong by your family of origin because of your father's sin can and usually does scar you for life. But rejection on a human plane doesn't disqualify you in God's economy—it often prepares you. Just think about your testimony. God makes leaders out of leftovers because God is the one writing the story. Think about it: Moses was a murderer in exile before he led Israel. David was the forgotten youngest son before he became king. Jephthah was driven away as illegitimate, but God would raise him up as a deliverer. The same is true for us—God redeems rejection by reassigning it for a divine purpose. Your rejection may be the exact place where God wants to demonstrate his power in your life. The rejection that made you feel small might become the stage for God's greatness. The voices that have said "you don't belong" can be drowned out by the voice of the Father who says, "you are mine called to a special mission." Don't resent rejection; bring it to God today. Name that wound, confess the pain, and ask him to redeem it for his glory. Believe that God wastes nothing—not even the broken pieces of your past. And then get ready... watch as God makes a leader out of the leftovers. ASK THIS: Where have I experienced rejection that still stings today? Do I believe that God can redeem even my deepest wounds for His purpose? How might the people I consider "worthless fellows" actually be the place where God is shaping me? DO THIS: Instead of resenting rejection, bring it to God today. Name the wound, confess the pain, and ask Him to redeem it for His glory. Believe that He wastes nothing—not even the broken pieces of your past. PRAY THIS: Father, thank You that rejection does not define me—Your calling does. Heal the wounds that make me feel small, redeem the places of pain, and prepare me to walk in Your purpose with confidence and faith. Amen. PLAY THIS: "One More Day."

Daniel Friebe, Lionel Birnie and Rob Hatch, give their verdict on the parcours unveiled in Paris on Thursday morning.  The ASO bigwigs have backloaded the course, apparently in the hope of maintaining a little more suspense this year. Will they succeed? Or, in trying to Pog-proof the Tour, have they merely underlined what an impossible task that is?     EPISODE SPONSORS Join Cycling The app designed to get you to your cycling goals, whether you're new to structured training or seeking to take your riding to the next level. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, and brought to you by Topo Athletic, we're joined by Mary “Fireweed” Kwart. Fireweed is a thru-hiker, a Deadhead, and a pioneering figure in wildland firefighting with a career spanning more than 30 years. We dive into the challenges of being one of the first women to join the elite Arrowhead Interagency Hotshots, the culture shock of entering a male-dominated field, and some of the most memorable stories from her decades on the fire line.  Fireweed also reflects on how long-distance hiking has evolved since the 1970s, her tradition of tackling a new long trail every year since retiring, and her deep love and advocacy for California's Bigfoot Trail. We wrap the show with the best backpacking trails in the Midwest, the thru-hiking advice we wish we'd never given, a debate over whether robotic legs should count as mechanical transport under the Wilderness Act, and the Triple Crown of parts of society we'd turn the clock back for.
