Bear Beware! Montana officials have euthanized a bear after it attacked a child at a campground. A new social media Instagram filter, "Selfie Control", helps tourists maintain safe distances from wildlife. Plus, wildfire updates and tips on the shelf life of sunscreen and insect repellent. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News!   Episode 198 Details Wildlife Safety: Bear Attack, Instagram Filter Plus Wildfire, Sunscreen & Insect Repellent Tips    Bear Attacks Young Child In Tent At Private Campground Bear Beware In Montana & Other National Parks According to Outdoor Life, Officials in Montana tracked down and killed a black bear that attacked a three-year-old girl, on Sunday, August 11th, while she was sleeping in a tent at a private campground near Red Lodge. The attack occurred around 9:45 p.m. at Perry's RV Park and Campground, leading to the evacuation of the site. The bear was trapped and euthanized by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (MFWP) officials, who believe it was the same bear involved in the incident. The girl was taken to a hospital in Billings, but her condition remains undisclosed. MFWP's Facebook post noted that "unsecured attractants" like garbage and human food likely lured the bear into the campsite. The campground remains closed as officials continue to monitor the area for any other bears Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks emphasizes being “Bear Aware” when camping or recreating in bear country, especially at established campgrounds where large concentrations of people can attract opportunistic bears. In its guide to camping in bear country, MFWP points out that most conflicts between humans and black bears at campsites involve food-conditioned bears.  In a statement, MFWP said, “A food-laden campsite can be a bear's death sentence. After trying scare tactics and multiple relocations, FWP wardens and biologists have to kill 10 to 12 bears each year when the animals, attracted by food, repeatedly raid campsites and put human safety at risk.” Reference: https://www.outdoorlife.com/survival/montana-black-bear-attacks-girl/ https://fwp.mt.gov/homepage/news/2024/aug/08132024_child-hospitalized-in-black-bear-attack-south-of-red-lodge https://fwp.mt.gov/binaries/content/assets/fwp/activities/bearproofcamping.pdf NEW Social Media Instagram Wildlife Filter: Safety First! Tourists and Wildlife Do Not Mix, Selfie Filter Provides Safety The Jackson Hole Travel & Tourism Board has launched the "Selfie Control" Instagram filter, designed to help tourists maintain safe distances from wildlife while taking photos. Preloaded with safe viewing distances for iconic species like bears, bison, and moose, the filter helps users determine if they are too close to the animals. If the animal appears larger on the screen than the icon, users are in the danger zone and should back up. This tool addresses the challenge of accurately estimating safe distances, as recommended by the National Park Service, which advises keeping at least 25 yards from wildlife and 100 yards from predators like bears. The filter aims to prevent dangerous encounters, especially with "tourons" who often disregard safety, leading to incidents such as bison-related injuries in Yellowstone. By making it easier to gauge safe distances, the filter is expected to enhance visitor safety and protect wildlife during the busy summer season. Reference: https://industry.visitjacksonhole.com/travel-tourism-board-inspires-a-little-selfie-control https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touron National Wildfire Update: Key Insights, Safety & Prevention Tips The National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) reports significant wildfire activity across the United States. As of August 13, 2024, there are 77 large active wildfires that have burned over 2.3 million acres. More than 28,750 wildland firefighters are currently assigned to wildfires. Year to date, since January, over 29,500 wildfires have burned more than 5.2 million acres in the United States, compared to 1.3 million acres during the same time frame in 2023. This is about one million acres above the 10-year average number of acres burned. More than 25,600 wildfires have been caused by people, compared to about 3,700 ignited by lightning. As wildfires continue to threaten communities and natural landscapes, it's crucial that we all do our part to prevent new fires from starting. Remember, it only takes a single spark to start a wildfire, but together, we can prevent them. "Warming temperatures, drier conditions, and shifts in precipitation are contributing to an increase in the frequency of large wildfires and acres of land burned in the U.S. each year," according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. So far in Fire Year 2024, 14 Unma nned Aircraft System (UAS) incursions have been reported near wildfires in 10 states. Seven of these incursions have caused firefighting aircraft to be grounded while the unauthorized drone operator was located. Unauthorized drones have no communication with wildland firefighters and pilots working on the ground and in the air. Regardless of your motivation, flying a drone near a wildfire is putting someone else's life in danger. Always Know Before You Fly and keep drones away from wildfires.   Key Safety Tips Stay Informed: Monitor local news and official sources for updates. Use apps and websites for real-time wildfire information. Prepare an Emergency Kit: Include essentials such as water, food, medications, and important documents. Follow Local Instructions: Adhere to evacuation routes and safety measures. Traveling During Wildfire Season: Avoid high-risk areas unless necessary. Wear protective clothing and a mask to reduce smoke inhalation. Meeting Location that all members of the party know to gather.   Packing List for Safe Campfires in Dry Conditions Fire-Safe Gear Portable Fire Pit: Prevent fire from spreading. Fire Blanket: Quickly smother accidental flames. Fire Extinguisher: For emergencies. Fire Control Tools Shovel: For digging a fire pit and extinguishing the fire. Bucket: To fetch water for dousing the fire. Water Supply: At least 5 gallons dedicated to extinguishing the fire.   Choosing a Site, Preparation & Management for a Camp Fire Select a site with no overhanging branches or flammable materials. Use established fire rings if available. Clear a 10-foot diameter around the pit. Dig a small pit and surround it with rocks. Keep the fire small and manageable. Never leave the fire unattended. Avoid burning trash or leaves. Allow the fire to burn down to ash. Pour water, stir the ashes, and pour more water until cold. Alternatively, cover the fire with dirt and check for hot spots. Check the area for stray embers or signs of heat. Ensure the fire is completely out before leaving. Always stay informed about local fire restrictions and weather conditions before lighting a campfire. For the latest updates, visit the National Interagency Fire Center's website. Synthetic repellents like DEET and picaridin have longer shelf lives compared to natural repellents with essential oils. Bug Spray with Essential Oils Bug sprays made with essential oils are effective for about a year. These natural repellents can degrade faster than synthetic ones. Checking Expiration Dispose of insect repellent after three years as it may lose efficacy over time. To check if bug spray has expired, look for changes in smell, color, or consistency, or test its effectiveness by applying it and monitoring for bites. Reference: https://www.marthastewart.com/8228048/does-bug-spray-expire Sunscreen: Shelf Life and Effectiveness FDA Guidelines The U.S. FDA mandates that sunscreen retains its full strength for at least three years, allowing you to use leftover sunscreen from previous years. Checking Expiration Dates Always check for an expiration date on the sunscreen bottle and discard any that have expired. If there is no expiration date, write the purchase date on the bottle and dispose of it after three years. Proper Storage Store sunscreen properly by keeping it out of hot weather and direct sunlight to maintain its effectiveness. If the sunscreen's color or texture changes, it's best to throw it out, according to the Mayo Clinic. Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

May a person spray insect repellent in his home on Shabbat? One of thirty-nine categories of forbidden activity on Shabbat is "Ha'shochet," or slaughtering, which includes as well all cases of "Netilat Neshama" – taking the life of any living creature. Thus, it is forbidden to kill animals or insects on Shabbat. Hence, Halacha would forbid spraying insect repellent in a manner that would invariably cause an insect to die. One may spray insect repellent only if he does so in the air – as opposed to directly on an insect – and he opens at least one window in the room to allow the insect to escape. The Chazon Ish (Rabbi Avraham Yeshaya Karelitz, Lithuania-Israel, 1879-1954) ruled more stringently, allowing one to spray under these conditions only if there is an ill patient in the home for whom the insects cause discomfort. Most other authorities, however, including Rabbi Moshe Halevi, in his work Menuchat Ahava (Helek 3, Perek 18:4), allow spraying into the air even if nobody in the home is ill, provided, as mentioned, that one leaves a window open, and the insects are causing discomfort to those in the room. (See Yabia Omer, Helek 3, O"H siman 20.) One of the thirty-nine areas of forbidden activity on Shabbat, "Tzad," forbids trapping animals. On the level of Torah law, this prohibition applies only to creatures classified as "Be'mino Nitzod," meaning, species that people normally hunt. Trapping other animals is forbidden only by force of Rabbinic enactment. The Rama (Rabbi Moshe Isserles, Poland, 1525-1572), in his glosses to the Shulchan Aruch (316:3; listen to audio for precise citation), writes that one must ensure not to close on Shabbat small receptacles that may contain flies, as he would then be trapping the flies on Shabbat. Therefore, if one sees his trashcan open on Shabbat, he should not place the cover on the can, given the likelihood that flies are inside the trash. The Mishna Berura (commentary to the Shulchan Aruch by Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan, the "Chafetz Chayim," Lithuania, 1839-1933) advises in such situation to cover the can but leave a small opening through which the flies could escape, and thereby avoid the prohibition of "Tzad." Furthermore, the Taz (commentary to the Shulchan Aruch by Rabbi David Halevi, Poland, 1586-1667) writes that one may close a trashcan after first sending away the flies he sees hovering around the top of the can. Since flies are not normally hunted, and thus trapping flies constitutes merely a Rabbinic prohibition, one need not search the trashcan to confirm the absence of flies before covering it. It suffices to send away the flies at the top of the can, and then place the cover. The Shulchan Aruch rules (316:9) that one may trap an insect that could potentially harm a person, such as bees and yellow jacks. Since trapping these insects is forbidden only by force of Rabbinic enactment, we may be lenient in situations of potential harm. Therefore, on Sukkot, for example, if bees fly over or around the table in the Sukkah, it is permissible to trap them, even on Shabbat and Yom Tov. Summary: Generally speaking, trapping animals and insects is forbidden on Shabbat, with the exception of potentially harmful insects, such as bees. One who wishes to cover his outdoor trashcan on Shabbat should either leave a small opening to allow flies inside the can to escape, or first shoo away any flies he sees on the top of the can. One may spray insect repellent on Shabbat into the air, but not directly on an insect, but he must leave at least one window open to allow the insects to escape, if the insects are causing discomfort to those in the room.

Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks…   Anonymous: Hi Dr.Cabral, Thank you so much for taking the time to answer listener questions every week! A little over a year ago I had a vaginal delivery with forceps. At my six week checkup I was not completely healed and asked to come back another two weeks later. This went on until I was six months postpartum, every time having silver nitrate applied to the scar tissue. At six months postpartum it was finally suggested I have a procedure done where I would go under anesthesia and have the doctor remove all the granulation tissue. My question to you is there anything I could I have done to help my body heal better and avoid that situation? I already take the DNS, zinc, D, omega and probiotic. Thanks again for all you do.   Justin: What are your thoughts on permethrin and insectashield clothing. What are the best natural mosquito and tick repellents? I’ve heard geranium oil can repel ticks. Is that something you’re familiar with?   Anonymous: I wanted to ask what it might mean when you bowel movements have no or little smell. After doing some research, it seems it could be due to lack of bacteria due to anitbiotics, I do not take those and havent for many years. I did the CBO protocol (first month only) a few months ago, but thats about it. If it helps, I have been diagnosed with dyspepsia. I also have what feels like a strange inflammatory (sometimes w/ burning) painful pressure in my sternum area everyday, and its very discomforting, with the feeling of fullness and cramping on my right abdomen in my liver area (ive done 7 liver flushes before). I that I take 2 caps of mag07 nightly and full spectrum mag as well. I seem to get a lot of mucous coming up my throat thruout the day, even if I havent eaten in a while. Thanks.   Laura: Hi, dr, Cabral.. hope you and your family are well.. I’m interested in pumpkin seed oil.. is it a healthy option? Not for cooking, but in my country we always use it for salads, it has an amazing aroma and taste and it’s considered very healthy here, lots of people make their own, it’s a whole thing around here ;) But now I’m not sure how healthy it is because you never mention it.. I only heard it once on your podcast about how to add 3.23 extra years to your life, ep. 2482 - it was part of that research.. Please talk more about it if you can.. I am also interested in the difference between sunflower seeds, sunbutter & sunflower oil.. the latter is unhealthy, but the other two are healthy, right? Could you please explain why? Thank you so much for all your hard work..   Erin: Lung question! I was diagnosed with asthma and allergies at the age of one…and still to this day have sinusitis and all kinds of sinus problems depending on the time of year. The asthma had thankfully gotten significantly better. But I recently was listening to someone talk about the connection between dry skin and the lungs in Chinese medicine. This really got me thinking as i have been suffering with dry skin for awhile. He mentioned if you had lung conditions, even way back as a child, you could still have infection left in your lungs. How would one go about getting rid of these old infections ? I am currently on the CBo protocol (not sure if this helps in anyway). Do you ever go grocery shopping without any sort of list and end up forgetting half of what you actually needed? Not fun, right? So why would you take that same approach with how you operate your supply chain? On our season finale of Supply Chain Therapy, listen to how Rebeca Illsley, COO of Thermacell Repellents, successfully incorporates process into an ever-growing demand pipeline. Yet another veteran in the industry, Rebecca held a variety of roles at The Clorox Company, including Director of Manufacturing & Director of Supply Chain Integration, before making the leap to Thermacell. In the conversation with Alex and Michelle, Rebecca shares what big lessons she's brought to the Thermacell team, and what she's prioritized first since joining the organization. Some of the highlights include segmentation, team building, and focusing on S&OP first and foremost. Given that Thermacell products are EPA registered, Rebecca highlights the ways in which your manufacturing is impacted when producing safe, high-quality products. Later on, you'll also hear Rebecca talk about what it was like to partially step away from her career in order to build her family and raise her two daughters. Hint – It's totally possible! In addition, she gives her take on how her experience has been in this male-dominated industry, and what advice she has for others looking to tighten the gender gap. —Guest BioRebecca Illsley is the Chief Operating Officer of Thermacell Repellents Inc. She started her career in consumer packaged goods 24 years ago in Research and Development with Frito-Lay followed by Coca-Cola. Rebecca took a pause in her career for six years opting to stay at home with her two daughters. She returned to work full time at The Clorox Company where she held a variety of roles in supply chain over 14 years. Those roles included Manager of Contract Manufacturing, Director of Global Quality Assurance, Director of Supply Chain Integration and Director of Manufacturing. Rebecca is very proud to be leading a talented supply chain organization at Thermacell, driving growth by disrupting the mosquito repellent category with exciting product innovation.Rebecca grew up in Nova Scotia Canada and has a BSc in Food Science from Acadia University and a MS in Food Science from the University of Minnesota. —Guest Quote“My opinion is: S&OP is the brain of the supply chain. So if you don't have S&OP where it needs to be, then you really can't manage your demand. And you really can't manage your inventory, and you can't manage your supply plans.” - Rebecca Illsley—Time Stamps *(2:00) Dynamic logistics in VMS*(7:56) All about Thermacell Repellents*(9:37) Joining the team from Clorox*(12:39) Recuperating in-house manufacturing *(16:16) Why you need to reinvest in your supply chain*(19:14) How to shift to a quality control mindset*(22:21) Overcoming the gender gap in supply chain*(27:35) Advice for ensuring equity *(30:55) Speed round—SponsorThis podcast is powered by the team at Stord.
