I went down to get a barrel of beer from Watermark Brewery, and it turned into one of my favorite conversations. Like many of us, the idea to jump into the world of hunting with dogs can get us a little over our skis. It's no different than anyone who has the passion to start something that they know nothing about. Yet they have the desire and passion to stick it out and make the best of it!!
Jerry DeRose, AKC retriever hunt test judge, joins me again to talk about the Senior Hunter level. We discuss the differences between Junior and Senior and what kind of training your dog needs in order to pass the SHR level. These are challenging tests but could be a good option for a pointing dog who is experienced with blind retrieves or has run the NAVHDA Invitational. You can get in touch with Jerry on Facebook at Calm Focused K9s – DeRose Kennels. -- The Accidental Bird Dog Podcast covers hunting events for pointing breeds. Believe it or not, communication is about far more than just the words one speaks. This week's guest on The Unbeatable Mind, communication expert Michael Hoeppner, argues that much like dance or martial arts, communication is a full-body act. As a world-recognized expert on public speaking, Michael, along with Mark, sheds light on the Navy SEALS' powerful spirit shout “Hoo Ya”, and how it embodies the physical essence of communication. Together they explore the intricacies of vocal variety, focusing on the significance of pace, pitch, pause, power, and placement, in the delivery of dynamic speech. Michael digs into practical exercises one can use to overcome some common pitfalls in effective communication. He details how these exercises can transform one's communication skills to ensure that their messages will be impactful and memorable. Lastly, he and Mark touch upon the art of storytelling and the use of poetic devices in crafting narratives that stick with those that listen. Whether speaking in front of the public, or catching up with an old friend, Michael invites listeners to join him on the journey towards becoming a compelling communicator. Key Topics Include: Communication as a Physical Act: Listen to Michael explain how communication is embodied physically—-it's more than just the words you speak, more akin to yoga or dance. Eliminating “Um's”: Explore the various exercises Michael presents to eliminate what he calls “filler words”, and choose what you say with precision. The “Five P's” of Vocal Variety: Discover how the voice is much like an instrument in how it implements pace, pitch, pause, placement, and power. Mastering these “Five P's” can radically transform how your message is received. Leveraging Poetic Devices: Learn how to harness techniques from the art of storytelling in order to enhance the power of your message. Join host Bob St.Pierre as he visits with CEOs Patrick Berry (Backcountry Hunters & Anglers), Ted Koch (North American Grouse Partnership), and Ed Arnett (The Wildlife Society) for an engaging roundtable discussion. Discover their favorite bird dogs, delve into Aldo Leopold's timeless quotes, and explore the intersection of conservation and personal passions. Episode Highlights: • BHA's Berry explains his affinity for English Springer spaniels and how the breed's personality matches his own. Berry also offers an interesting perspective on social media through the lens of a famous Leopold quote about hunting. • Koch recounts the North American Grouse Partnership's roots in falconry, then he and St.Pierre riff on the “magic” that exists in training a pointing dog and raptor to work together as a hunting team. • Arnett talks about Aldo Leopold's role in The Wildlife Society's creation and how so much of Leopold's writing is still used today by wildlife professors in universities across the country training biologists in non-profits and agencies. onX Hunt is a proud supporter of Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever and they want to thank everyone who gives back to the birds we all love to hunt and the places they call home. Send us a textWhen a lifelong hunter from New Brunswick relocates to Saskatchewan, the learning curve becomes a fascinating journey through Canada's diverse hunting landscapes. Dave shares his nine-year adventure adapting to prairie hunting while bringing along his east coast hunting ethic and determination.Saskatchewan's trophy whitetail reputation comes with controversy, as we explore the lottery system that gives residents preferential access while limiting opportunities for other Canadian hunters. The sponsorship system for family members offers improved odds but still no guarantees, creating frustration for hunters wanting to experience the province's legendary deer hunting without hiring outfitters. The conversation takes a serious turn discussing Chronic Wasting Disease management across provincial borders. With CWD now detected in 59 of Saskatchewan's 83 wildlife management zones, hunters face new regulations and ethical questions about testing, transportation, and consumption of harvested animals. We compare different provincial approaches to containing this 100% fatal deer disease and the role hunters play in management efforts.Dave's enthusiasm peaks when sharing his expertise training German Shorthaired Pointers for pheasant hunting. From the natural instincts of backing another dog's point to the remarkable ability to track injured birds through dense cattails, his stories highlight the special partnership between hunters and their dogs. His detailed descriptions of pheasant behavior – including the surprising fact that they can run faster than they fly – provide valuable insights for anyone interested in pursuing these challenging gamebirds.Whether discussing the prairie moose that feed in canola fields or the limitations of wildlife management funding, this conversation spans the breadth of Canadian hunting experiences with authenticity and practical knowledge. Dave's journey reminds us that adapting to new hunting environments requires both respect for traditional skills and openness to learning new approaches.Check us out on Facebook and instagram Hunts On Outfitting, and also our YouTube page Hunts On Outfitting Podcast. Gina Deem was a nursing student in Bozeman, Montana when she adopted her first hunting dog in 2014. At the time, she wasn't a hunter, but her then-boyfriend was. “He said, ‘If we're going to get a dog, we're going to get a bird dog. And that bird dog's going to be a German Shorthair,'” she recalls. Aware of how many dogs were in shelters, Deem wanted to adopt a bird dog. Deem and her partner didn't have the funds to put down a deposit with a reputable GSP breeder. Plus, she figured they'd be able to find a GSP up for adoption. She was right. Within days, she and her then-boyfriend picked up a Shorthair named Boone from a small shelter near Sand Point, Idaho. He had been surrendered after his former owner's health declined. That fall, Deem took Boone hunting and watched him point his first rooster pheasant. Deem was hooked and soon developed a deep passion for bird dogs and upland hunting. After adopting several more GSPs and observing how many popped up at shelters in her region, she started Paws to Peak Rescue in 2018. Since then, she's rehomed over 130 bird dogs in Montana, Idaho, Utah, and beyond.
So how English is the English setter? In some ways, the answer is ‘not very much.' In terms of numbers, looks and working style the breed is now more American, more Italian, more international than it is English. However, the English setter is, and always will be, quintessentially English. Refined over time by brilliant, industrious people, the English setter, like the English language, is a practical, elegant, and highly adaptable product of a small island nation that conquered the world.

This episode kicks off a new series for the podcast! Every few episodes, I will be featuring interviews with other people who got bird dogs as pets and then got into hunting later because of their dogs. The first tale of a fellow accidental bird dog owner is Sara Kline. Sara lives in Alaska with her three dogs: a vizsla named Jack, and two Deutsch Drahthaars named Dicky and Rufus. Sara originally got Jack as a running buddy when she lived in England, but it wasn't long before Jack decided he liked pointing pheasants along their runs, too. Sara has grown a lot in her journey training her dogs and is very forthcoming about the mistakes she's made along the way and how she's trying to use the lessons she's learned with her new puppy. Sara's story is very relatable and I know you will enjoy it! You can follow Sara on Instagram at @journeyswithgundogs. The Accidental Bird Dog Podcast is sponsored by OnX Hunt and Boss Shotshells. In this episode, I interviewed Carl Correra, who is an AKC field trial judge and competitor. Last year, I had the honor of watching Carl and his 12 year old GSP, Fancy, participate in the inaugural AKC Master Hunter Excellent test. Fancy tore up the course, was steady as a rock, and had all the participants cheering for her. As someone who has unintentionally been competing with an older dog due to our late start, I've found myself being worried about her age. I think there's a lot of misconception out there about what is possible for a dog who is 10+. Carl and I discuss considerations to keep your older bird dog going strong even as they age. You can email find Carl on Facebook or send him an email: cvcorrera@yahoo.com. The Accidental Bird Dog Podcast is sponsored by OnX Hunt and Boss Shotshells. Zara was diagnosed with a major injury early this year – bilateral iliopsoas strains/tears. In this episode, I talk about how she went from being an extremely active 10 year old dog to a rehab patient having to endure months of restricted exercise and rehab. It was a tough process for both of us but thankfully she is doing much better now. I discuss how I think the injury originated and everything I did to help her recover. This episode sets the stage for the next one which will cover prevention of injury for canine athletes. The Accidental Bird Dog Podcast is sponsored by OnX Hunt and Boss Shotshells. This is the companion to the previous episode, Dealing with Failure. It might seem weird to talk about "dealing" with success, because, after all, isn't success a good thing in the context of dog sports? But success is not always as straightforward as you might think.
