For the Record is a conversation series where we speak with all manner of music heads — DJs, music journos, indie label captains, record shop owners, listening bar kingpins, et al — about their stories + the music that makes them. Join the Crate Coalition: https://discord.gg/sAaG6a7bv4 Jack Spallone started his music career talent-buying for live performances and artist management while still an undergrad. In 2016, he became an early contributor of Ujo Music, the ConsenSys project that introduced the first music cases on Ethereum. While at ConsenSys, Jack also worked with Harry Fox Agency and SESAC to secure the winning bid to be the technology partner of the MLC, among other enterprise client work. Jack has built a reputation as a web3 music pioneer. He has helped artists enter into the web3 ecosystem to explore new format releases, artist DAOs, and crypto-based community building tools. Apart from continuing to help artists, Jack is an investor and advisor to several music web3 startups and an active participant in the dialogue shaping web3 music. Today, along with long time collaborator and grammy-winning Andre Anjos (aka RAC), Jack leads a team of people building a data sharing protocol for music applications; Oscillator, and a music review and sharing app, Factory. On today's episode, I'm joined by Juan Fran Blanco. Juan is the creator of “Solidity”, the most popular Solidity-oriented VSCode extension in the world. The extension provides hundreds of thousands of Solidity developers daily access to syntax highlighting, autocomplete, and much more. Juan's main focus is Nethereum, a .NET framework for interacting with EVM blockchains. Nethereum is useful for interacting with the blockchain from Microsoft based operating systems, which constitute a huge number of the virtual and physical devices in the world. In this episode, we discuss Juan's experiences working on Ujo Music with Simon De La Rouviere and Karl Floersch, how the Solidity VSCode extension works under the hood, and what role Nethereum plays in the ecosystem. It was great getting to talk 1-on-1 with someone whose software I use every day. I hope you enjoy this episode.

Human beings have a penchant for creating lists. We make lists for things like the top music artists at any given time, the best restaurants in the world, companies which people can trust, and the most wanted criminals. Lists take many forms. They can be maintained by a single authority, or curated by a crowd. But almost always, they remain in the custody of a central party. Token Curated Lists propose a model by which a) the content of lists are decentralized, and b) contributors are incentivized to curate their content according to social consensus. We’re joined by Simon de la Rouviere, an independent researcher and blogger. Previously, Simon was one of the first employees at ConsenSys and founded Ujo Music. He also contributed to the ERC20 token specification and has written about blockchain and token economics since 2014. In recent months, Simon’s research has focused on Token Curated Registries (or TCRs), and the economics of curation markets. Topics covered in this episode: Simon’s background and interest in blockchain, music, and economics Bonding curves as a mechanism for continuous token issuance Curation markets and how they relate to bonding curves Practical applications of curation markets The connection between curation markets and cultural memes Token Curated Registries and their applications The role of TCRs as a crypto economic primitive The economics and game theory of TCRs Simon’s recent project “This Artwork is Always for Sale” Episode links: Simon de la Rouviere – Medium Bancor’s Smart Tokens vs Token Bonding Curves – Medium Introducing Curation Markets: Trade Popularity of Memes & Information (with code)! – Medium Ujo Music This Artwork Is Always On Sale – Medium This Artwork Is Always On Sale Simon de la Rouviere – Twitter This episode is hosted by Sebastien Couture and Meher Roy . In Episode 57 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Joseph Lubin about the progress being made at Consensys and precisely how Joe believes that Ethereum will overcome the scalability challenges that have plagued its network since the earliest days of its founding. For the last few years, many blockchain enthusiasts have been eagerly anticipating the release of what many have referred to as “the Netflix moment.” In other words, blockchain enthusiasts expect to see a killer application running atop Ethereum, or some other distributed ledger, that will be adopted by the mass consumer. One of the criticisms of this view is that comparisons between the mid-to-late 1990’s and the current era in blockchain technology are overblown. It took twenty years of Internet protocol development and tweaking before Tim Berners-Lee gave us the World Wide Web in 1989. It wasn’t until 1998 that Netflix released its online, DVD rental store. When asked about the comparison between 90’s Internet and today's blockchain technology, Joseph Lubin makes the point that there isn’t going to be one moment when the scalability problems are “solved.” According to Joe, the process of scaling a complex, permissionless database is "always ongoing." To his point, ConsenSys alone employs close to 40 engineers who are working just on the Ethereum base layer protocols, clients, and enterprise scaling solutions. The company is closely aligned with a variety of efforts currently being undertaken to scale the ethereum network, including sharding, proof-of-stake, Casper CBC, Casper FFG, and a number of layer two solutions including state channels and plasma. Demetri has already devoted an entire episode to exploring some of these layer one solutions in great detail with Vitalik Buterin and Vlad Zamfir. That said, Joseph Lubin offers an additionally interesting perspective on some of the layer two protocols, which he thinks can solve many of ethereum’s throughput limitations without requiring applications to reconcile directly on the main chain for every transaction. Demetri and Joe spend a good deal of time exploring the challenges of building layer two solutions in more depth, including the counterparty risk problem created from the use of state channels. Additional topics include SEC regulations, artificial intelligence, and questions about specific applications in the areas of news, music, and team organization. Demetri asks Joseph Lubin about Ujo Music, Civil, OpenLaw, as well as something called TMNT or “Traditional Management Nullification Tools,” which enables a different organizational approach to team and systems management that more closely resembles an organism than a corporation.
