Fraser Smeaton: The $50M Amazon Success Story From Losing to Winning   Early Years and Career Beginnings Fraser Smeaton's journey began in the field of Electrical Engineering at university, but his career soon shifted to the corporate world. He spent eight years working in Marketing and General Management roles, where he gained invaluable experience in business strategy and market dynamics.   From Side Hustle to Full-Time Entrepreneur In 2009, Fraser started a side hustle that quickly grew into a full-time business. The venture gained rapid traction, going viral within its first year, which led Fraser to leave his corporate job to focus entirely on his new business. Initially, the business was promoted through its website, heavily supported by Facebook advertising, which drove significant growth in the early years.   Expansion and Early Challenges As the business grew, Fraser expanded into wholesaling, including becoming an Amazon vendor. This period of expansion, which lasted until 2012, was marked by rapid growth. However, the company soon faced the challenges that come with scaling up. As competition increased and costs soared, the demand for their products began to decrease.   The Low Point and Strategic Shift By 2015, Fraser's business faced over £1 million in losses, leading to a workforce reduction by half. Fraser noted that third parties sold their wholesale products on Amazon and decided to sell directly on Amazon to capture retail and wholesale margins and control sales.   Refocusing on Amazon Pivoting to Amazon as the main sales channel was pivotal for the company. Success hinged on refining all Amazon-related processes—procurement, logistics, pricing, content, SEO, advertising. Fraser's belief in cumulative small improvements and launching over 150 new products each year drove substantial growth.   Navigating the Pandemic The pandemic presented new challenges, particularly as the business struggled while other sectors flourished. However, Fraser's quick action to control costs and focus on improving internal processes helped the company navigate through this difficult period. Instead of retreating, they used this time to refine operations, setting the stage for future success.   Current Success and Business Moat Today, Fraser's business generates over $50 million annually and employs more than 60 people. The company's competitive advantage lies in its ability to manage complex operations profitably in a tough category. This expertise has allowed the business to thrive in an increasingly competitive landscape.   Looking for a Free PPC Audit? https://www.databrill.com/

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: My experience founding what will hopefully be a high-impact for-profit, published by PV on June 28, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. In this post, I reflect on my journey with Tälist and our platform AltProtein.Jobs. I share my experience with and insights into the strategic decision-making process, misconceptions around our financial model, work-life balance as a founder, and other aspects, hoping they help others in their career decisions and entrepreneurial endeavors in high-impact sectors. TL:DR Product-market fit is Hard: Finding the right organizational structure and intervention (=service/product) has been an iterative process of learning new things, re-evaluating, and pivoting. It might seem obvious in retrospect why an organization ends up doing things a certain way, but the experience of getting to the right place feels like several consecutive steps with uncertainty and junctures along the way. Pivoting to Meet Demand: The growing talent demand in the Alt. Protein industry demands efficient and scalable solutions. We pivoted to a matchmaking platform after starting as an industry-specific recruitment service and a comprehensive intervention comparison. Communicating Our For-Profit Model: We're a for-profit company. This has been leading to misconceptions in the EA community and beyond, and we're working to get better at communicating why we chose this organizational structure. One of the main reasons is that it allows us to generate revenue and qualify for public innovation grants rather than relying completely on philanthropic money via funds. Reframing Entrepreneurship for Work-Life Balance: I assume there are great people who avoid founding organizations or initiatives because they equate being a founder/entrepreneur with a hustle culture that wouldn't allow them to have a fulfilling and sustainable work-life balance. It helped me to reframe my role as "a regular job where I do entrepreneurial stuff." About Alternative Proteins Alternative Proteins is an umbrella term for various alternatives to animal products, from milk/dairy to fish & seafood to meat or just single components like fat or protein. Innovative techniques are used to create plant-based, cultivated, or precision-fermented products (as well as hybrids between these three "verticals" or latest developments like plant molecular farming). Widespread adoption of alternative proteins is expected to play a crucial role in ending industrial animal agriculture, mitigating the environmental impact of our food system, reducing animal suffering, and decreasing the risk of pandemics from zoonotic disease. The industry is growing, and so is the demand for talent, which continues to outpace its supply. While talent and skill gaps are a bottleneck in many industries, the Alt. Protein sector faces additional industry-specific challenges (e.g. the requirement of very scientific and technical skills or that this niche industry and its career opportunities are still widely unknown to many promising candidates). This situation is pushing the date for when Alt. Proteins can scale to start displacing industrial animal agriculture. Talent solutions within the Alt. Protein industry are an important intervention to address a key bottleneck and accelerate the industry and its expected impact. Becoming a founder The years before I came across EA in 2016, when I was working as a consultant & project manager in the private sector, starting an extra-occupational MBA in General Management. Through my work and MBA, I discovered my interest in entrepreneurship. In 2017, I founded EA Dresden with my now-husband. Still, it took me a couple of years to fully embrace the thought of changing my career to maximize my impact. In parallel, I also became more and more intrigued about the impact potential of the Alt. Protein i...

He holds a BASc in General Management from ZHAW. Prior to university, Nicolas played football and worked at Credit Suisse and PAN Asset Management AG. During his undergraduate studies, Nicolas joined the startup jayboo as a late co-founder and stayed there for 2 years before starting his next venture, Poinz. At Poinz, Nicolas experienced all the ups and downs of entrepreneurship: he bootstrapped the company for 1.5 years, almost saw the company go bankrupt, lost an exit opportunity at the last minute, got funded by the Deindeal mafia founders, scaled his company up, and ended up meeting his future wife there. After 6.5 years at Poinz, Nicolas felt that he and his co-founder were not sufficiently in agreement regarding the future of the company, and he also had the urge to start a project in the mental health industry, so he left Poinz in 2019 to start Aepsy a year later. His desire to delve deeper into the mental health industry came when a friend of his went through a mental health crisis, and he found that searching online for a psychologist was a nightmare. He knew his friend wasn't an isolated case: statistics estimate that ⅓ of Swiss people suffer from mental health issues, and that out of those people, ⅔ do not reach out for help. So he created a platform where people can answer a few questions about their needs and be presented with a suitable selection of therapists, with whom they can do intro calls to assess the fit. Aepsy works with certified Swiss psychotherapists with years of practical experience and has a 95% client satisfaction rate.   Don't forget to give us a follow on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Linkedin, so you can always stay up to date with our latest initiatives. Ihr seid bei "On the Way to New Work" - Folge 403 - heute mit Guido Neuhaus.

Founder Colleen Falicki was inspired to compost years before starting Back To Earth Compost.  She grew up learning little tricks from her grandparents who had maintained a healthy garden.  Then in high school, the budding entrepreneur formed the group STEM (Save the Environment Man).  Years later, after marrying and having a family of her own, Colleen formed Back To Earth Compost and has since turned the Green-friendly business into a community gem.  With options to have your compost picked up (locally), or utilize one of the drop-off locations--you can save the environment one 5-gallon bucket at a time.Next, Gene Blum chatted with the Director of Operations for M2O Burgers & Executive Chef, Richard Dobies of the newly opened Töska Restaurant and Brewery in Philadelphia's Germantown area.  Chef Richard Dobies grew up learning how to cook, with his first job at the young age of 12 inside his cousin's restaurant.  Later, he re-entered the culinary scene after health issues arose in his family's restaurants which eventually led Dobies to a General Management position at M2O's Newark, DE location.  After seeing the positive impact of changes made by Dobies, the trio of brothers (Leo, Pep, and Jim Osmanollaj) who own Have a Burger and M2O Burgers, brought Richard on as their Director of Operations and Executive Chef for M2O and the new Töska Restaurant and Brewery.  With the opening of Töska, visitors can experience a menu that will represent the Osmanollaj brother's Albanian roots by adding a delicious twist on comfort food favorites! For our last course on your intellectual palate, we discussed everyone's favorite dessert: Ice cream!  Owowcow Creamery was founded in 2009 by John Fezzuoglio, and is one of the few businesses licensed by the US Department of Agriculture to make America's favorite sweet treat from scratch.  So it was no wonder when he offered the position of Executive Chef to Alison Rizzo, she was elated to accept.  Rizzo, who graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY joined us to talk about what goes into making their flavorsome frozen treats, which hastens back to Fezzuoglio's original mission: Support local agriculture while serving the community by creating ice cream that is real and honest.
