Nearly five months ago, the Ethereum blockchain successfully completed what was — at the time — a very complicated and years-in-the-making update. Called The Merge, it allowed the blockchain to move from validating transactions using computers, that took a lot of energy to run, to a proof-of-stake model. The switch cut Etherium's power consumption by more than 99 percent. After The Merge, the price of Eth rallied a bit, but has since fallen about 15 percent. Now, software developers who work on Ethereum are gearing up for a new upgrade called Shanghai. It will allow the tokens being used to order transactions on the blockchain to be withdrawn. Today on the DIVI podcast, Ryan and Steve discuss some of the changes over the past four or five years in crypto, and the divergence. In the beginning, there was a decentralized path. Now, there are huge custodial and DeFi plays happening. The different perspectives are leading to the maturity of the crypto industry. With the restructuring of not only the personnel of DIVI, but the legal framework, in order to be fully decentralized, to look good from a legal perspective, to be positioned for a Series A, and to start the larger partnerships, allowing for access to opportunities that had previously been out of reach. The DIVI wallet launched earlier in 2021, allowing for staking with just one DIVI from your cell phone. With more staking, DIVI is close to one billion coins. Upcoming features in 2022 include fiat on-ramp and crypto swaps. Crypto swaps will be a prerequisite for the DeFi initiative, swapping tokens in the wallet itself. With the rise of NFT projects, Crypto MoonBoys, and Darren Cullen, who is also behind Graffiti Kings. While he started out with graffiti as vandalism, he now devotes a lot of resources to helping kids in need get into various arts and crafts. Part of the problem on Ethereum is the Miner Extracted Value, where miners can front-run transactions, as well as use sandwich attacks, and steal the profits for themselves, or otherwise manipulate transactions. In many instances, the gas prices alone can raise the overall cost of a transaction by two or even three times. For example, a $100 NFT had a gas fee of $250. Today on the Fortune Teller Podcast, we have Anthony Georgiades Co-Founder of Pastel Network. The Pastel Network is a peer-to-peer decentralized platform to securely register, trade, and collect NFTs. One of Pastel's core features is the Negligible Fees. With the high gas costs on the Ethereum Blockchain, some have to spend $500 worth of ETH to make a single artwork NFT, which ends up excluding most digital artists in the world. The Pastel Network keeps the cost to register an artwork minimally below $.05, ensuring that transacting is affordable irrespective of network exhaustion or the underlying price of PSL. We ensure low fees in Pastel with a mechanism that automatically adjusts the required registration fees based on how much the mining difficulty has increased for PSL over time. Users incorrectly believe that NFTs are minted and exist in a decentralized manner on the blockchain. However, NFTs are really only non-fungible to the extent they refer to the actual token, not ownership of the rare asset itself. Storing an NFT's metadata and assets on a centralized server or using IPFS for the maintenance of files makes any creator or owner vulnerable to the loss of assets if the centralized entity shut down or if the protocol links were to go dead. Pastel ensures that the digital asset itself is uploaded, verified, and registered on the Pastel blockchain — rather than just the token with which it is minted. Via smart tickets on the Pastel ledger, one can store their masterpieces in a distributed fashion across Supernodes, as opposed to just ensuring the token is non-fungible. The sophisticated storage layer, leveraging the RaptorQ fountain code algorithm, breaks an asset up in a series of redundant chunks. Each chunk has certain random fragments of the combined file and is distributed redundantly across participating Supernodes. Pastel is user-friendly, with a PastelID, a system that ensures creators and collectors can share their PastelID key on their website or various social media account, as opposed to the confusing string identifiers associated with pub/priv key pairs. Every aspect of Pastel was carefully designed to account for intuitive user-flow and understanding. Pastel uses the zk-SNARK system introduced by Zcash, allowing for provably secure “shielded” (private) transactions that can be validated by the network without disclosing the receiving address. PSL is the native cryptocurrency on the Pastel Network, allowing participants to securely register and store their assets on the Pastel Network. The data written inherits all the security properties of the Bitcoin-like cryptocurrency, providing a solid foundational layer. This pod is all about NFT's - what they are, how they can be used, and whether or not we think NFT's could be a good investment opportunity. What is an NFT? NFT stands for non-fungible token - which is a special type of cryptographic token which represents something specific and unique. Using blockchain technology, NFT's designate an official copy of digital media, which can then be sold by artists, musicians, or sports entities to make money on content. What does it mean to be non-fungible? Non-fungible means it's specific and unique. Examples non-fungible assets: House, painting, trademark Tokens designate that it's something digital in nature that's traded with the blockchain technology - like how bitcoin operates. Examples of NFT's: NBA Top Shot Partnership w/ Dapper labs to make digital trading cards or “moments” - short highlight videos that you can own pieces of. Each moment is serialized and some are more rare to own than others. “Packs” sell for as low as $9 100's of thousands of people line up for packs Currently - people who get a “pack” are making 10-15x their money per pack This won't last forever- but it could be a good short term speculative investment opportunity. Supply will eventually increase enough to meet demand - which will likely drive prices lower. We don't know when the supply will match the demand - it clearly has not yet as it's estimated that each pack of top shots are worth 10-20x what you pay for them. These are collectibles - just in a digital format, and they're on fire right now. NBA Top shot has generated over 230M in revenue so far. They just went live in mid-2020. Crypto Punks - Collection of 10,000 unique characters with proof of ownership on the Ethereum Blockchain. No two are exactly alike. These digital pictures (32 bit) are selling for tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars. This whole thing sounds to me like it's out of hand. Twitter- Jack Dorsey - is selling his first ever twitter tweet for over 2.5M as an NFT Digital Art - Artists can now sell their art online in a digital format… and people are buying it!
