Nick Mills: Bring back local pubs

EDITORIAL: I love this story. I read this story in the paper this morning and I really love it. The Castlepoint Hotel is finally allowed to turn the beer taps back on after a six-month dry spell. Its got new operators, and has been granted their liquor licences after a pretty thorough hearing. I mean those liquor licensing hearings, when they've got a bone can go forever. They were questioned about staffing, training, duty managers and how they would handle the occasional belligerent punter. We always get the old belligerent punter don't we, that's a great word. And let's face it, is something every country pub has probably had to deal with since the first beer was poured. And good on them. Because I love the idea of a genuine local pub. Not a flash-Harry cocktail bar. Not somewhere with twelve-dollar bowls of fries or olives and a drinks menu you need reading glasses and a dictionary to understand. I mean a pub. A proper pub. The kind where everyone knows your name. You walk through the door and they're already pouring your usual. I should have got Grace to write, give us the music for cheers on this one, shouldn't I? Where you walk through the door and they're already pouring you your usual because they know where you are. They have Big Norm sitting in the corner. He's been sitting in that corner since the pub opened. You know that pub? Roaring fire in the middle of winter. There's a Sunday roast on Sunday. Someone's always holding court at the end of the bar, always someone telling a joke, silly old dad's joke. You know the pub I mean. It's like Cheers, except it's at Castle Point or the Wairarapa, not in Boston. Where have the days have those pubs gone? Particularly closer to the city. You know, we have so many trendy bars and cafes and wine bars, fashionable restaurants. We've pushed the old local completely out. I'd love to own a country pub in a place like town. Could you have one? Your local. Your local in your suburb that really is your local. Could you do that in our suburbs and create that country atmosphere? Nothing pretentious. Decent food, cold beer, friendly staff and a room full of people who actually want to talk to each other. So, have you still got a proper local? And if somebody opened an honest-to-goodness country pub in Wellington, would you go? Just hang out with your buddies. A $10 beer instead of a $17 beer. A bowl of fries that cost you 6 bucks. Centered From Reality

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 10, 2026 17:05

Alex opens with a quick riff on going to the movies before diving into Tucker Carlson's ten-point "manifesto" about his vision for America. He runs through each point — Fair, Sovereign, Productive, Beautiful, Healthy, Honest, Optimistic, Wise, Decent, and United — reacting to each in turn. His overall take: he doesn't think Tucker is actually running for president, but is instead building a political framework that JD Vance could eventually step into if he breaks from Trump. Tucker's Ten Points — Alex's Take on Each: Fair — "Fair to me means he's saying they — we need to make it fair for us," which Alex reads as classic us-vs-them framing. Sovereign — On blaming Israel for pushing the U.S. into the Iran war, Alex says it "takes agency away from Trump and puts it all on Israel," calling Israel "a great boogeyman" but not the whole story. Productive — Alex says the anti-globalization, pro-manufacturing pitch "sounds like Trump's protectionism," adding flatly, "manufacturing is just not coming back." Beautiful — Alex is open to agreeing on ugly urban planning and brutalist architecture, joking Tucker could "make America beautiful again — not a bad campaign." Healthy — He's sympathetic to the anti-overmedication point but balks at "universal sobriety," saying it "sounds like you start locking up people for drinking." Honest — Alex is fully on board with releasing classified records: "I'd be down for JFK and just release it all at this point." Optimistic — On the pro-natalist "you must have children" stance, Alex says it "sounds like" Tucker's Christian nationalism and pushes back that "some people shouldn't have children." Wise — Alex is skeptical of Tucker preaching how "the world actually works" given Tucker's own claims about being visited by demons in his sleep. Decent — This is where Alex agrees most, saying "Department of War is fucking retarded" and that Israel "needs to stop," calling Netanyahu "an awful actor." United — Alex flatly disagrees with halting immigration, arguing immigrants are "doing jobs that a lot of people don't want."

"If people don't feel safe, they can't really listen." *** Mellissa Seaman on the missing role in great group events: the Guardian. Have you ever been in a group experience that should have worked, but somehow didn't? Good people. Decent agenda. Maybe a smart person up front with a microphone. And still, the room feels dead. Or weird. Or unsafe in a way nobody names. People get distracted, suddenly very interested in when the bathroom break is coming or why someone keeps blowing their nose so loudly in the middle of the deep thing. Much of that magic, when a group is held well, is guardianship. Or the lack thereof. Mellissa first learned the secret art of being a Guardian as a teenager at her Catholic high school, helping lead Teens Encounter Christ retreats. Her job was to sit at a round table with a group of students and help them feel safe, included, and contained enough to actually participate. Years later, after she met her Apache mama and mentor, Maria Yraceburu, the importance of this role got driven home in a much deeper way. Maria explained that in her family, the Guardian was one of the most important roles in ceremony. The Guardian holds the vessel of the group secure, makes sure people have what they need, and helps everyone feel belonging and connection, so the group can relax inside the experience. It can sound trivial, like worrying about the bathroom or the snack table. But under the logistics is the energetic message: I've got you. You can relax. You don't have to stay vigilant about whether your basic needs will be met while someone else is trying to transform your life from the stage.   In this episode: Why a room can feel dead, weird, or unsafe even when the agenda looks fine What Mellissa learned as a teenage Guardian at retreat tables How Maria Yraceburu named the Guardian as one of the most important roles in ceremony Why bathroom breaks, snack tables, and basic needs are part of the energetic container How the person quietly tracking the room may be the reason the whole thing works Why teachers, facilitators, and people with the microphone cannot hold every role at once If you lead groups, teach, facilitate, host retreats, or quietly notice the person who has gone silent, this one may help you name the sacred labor that has probably been hiding in plain sight.   Resources Mentioned Private retreats with Mellissa: https://channelyourgenius.com/2026-retreats   More Resources:  Take the Soul Gift Quiz: https://www.soulgiftquiz.com   Join the FREE Explore Your Gifts Circle: https://academy.channelyourgenius.com/explore     Connect with Mellissa Website: https://www.channelyourgenius.com   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/MellissaSea    YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@channelyourgenius    Substack: mellissaseaman.substack.com   Keywords Intuitive gifts, spiritual gifts, Soul Gifts, Specialist archetype, Channel Your Genius, Genius Activation, grounded intuition, soul-led business, intuitive leadership, spiritual awakening at midlife

Getting decent at darts, foosball, and pool during bartending days was never meant to lead anywhere beyond having fun.   Once real skill showed up, buddies wanted to team up for leagues, and travel to compete against other people followed naturally.   None of that community was available while still avoiding the games out of embarrassment.   The same pattern shows up in health and fitness, where getting decent often opens the door to teams, classes, and events.   Getting good enough is often the door to community, not just a personal accomplishment. Using examples like a conflict with neighbors, online outrage, and relationship fights, they discuss wise distance, not adding fuel to the fire, asserting boundaries when effective, and directing core human yearnings (competence, connection, purpose, meaning, orientation, and feeling) toward what truly satisfies rather than empty status pursuits.Related ResourcesGet enhanced show notes for this episodeBecome a Wise Effort Community memberSign up for my newsletterOrder my book, Wise Effort: How to Focus Your Genius Energy on What Matters Most, and receive special bonus gifts.Diana's EventsSee Diana at an upcoming eventConnecting With DianaSubscribe for free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.Leave a 5-star review on Apple so people like you can find the show.Follow Diana on YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Diana's website. Thanks to the team, Craig and Ashley Hiatt, and Benjamin Gould of Bell & Branch for your beautiful music.Mentioned in this episode:Tell the Truth Salon Series You are invited to join me live in person or streaming online here in Santa Barbara to Tell the Truth Salon Series. What Dusty Just Done Did Starts at 0:51 Not only did we have this team come out of nowhere to be the best in the history Michigan basketball. The Dusty May Era is now a fever dream. Takes a little bit out of it. This is college basketball now. Understand why he wouldn't want to be a college coach today; he explicitly said he never got to feel like they won a championship. NCAA can be blamed for letting it get here but also they have no power whatsoever to fix all the things that mean the second you win a title you have to recruit your new team. Second time in a row the college coach the NBA took was Michigan's. This is not the Cavs; Dallas is a good gig. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP]  2. The Future of Michigan Basketball Starts at 19:04 They're promoting Mike Boynton to interim head coach, with a possibility of permanence. Greater that 50% chance he's the HC without the interim title, but might execute a search. Five days after they announce a hire the portal is open for Michigan alone, which is probably what scared them into this now. McKenney is back, probably Cadeau back, direction of things is a battle to hold onto the transfer bigs. Boynton: got tagged by the FBI thing, can see his tenure as not successful, or successful for the Minnesota of the Big 12. He has a trademark, which is defense: five of six years with a top-20 unit. Still relatively young, can recruit. Program: "What option do we have?" UNNNNNGGGGGHHHHHH. Actual option: Josh Schertz! Trademark is twos, built a real roster there, is Dusty's best coaching buddy. Don't care as much about roster continuity (Brian Ellerbe, Sherrone Moore) because the players won't be around long. Also if you poach a coach you have access to another team's roster and coaching staff, whereas right now Michigan and the Mavs are competing for Michigan staff and Michigan and the world are competing for Michigan's players. Other names to look at: Niko Medved was our next pick two years ago, did as well as possible with Minnesota last year. Where is Michigan Basketball in program rankings? Would Purdue swap with us? Purdue built their fanbase over years of having a program, just like Michigan hockey. 3. The Warde Talk Starts at 53:17 What are you supposed to do with a guy who alternates between asleep-at-the-wheel scandals and national championships? Push back against Brian's assertion that people "don't want to work for him" because these are all individual situations. He's not a bad guy, but he's also not a guy who *does* things, unless that's milking the fanbase or turning Michigan Stadium into an F1 race of ads. His oeuvre is not doing anything, because that worked with Harbaugh in 2020, and now that's a modus operandi. Talking ADs history since Canham. Push back against Brian's lionizing of Canham: he was a visionary, but his record also includes Dr. Anderson and trying to prevent/undermine Title IX. We end up preferring Bill Martin of all our lifetime ADs—he built the boxes to prevent ads in the stadium. Don't think missing out on Les Miles was a loss. Brian's Warde assessment: He typed "how to AD" into ChatGPT. Does losing Dusty May like this change your opinion on Warde Manuel? No. But it's weird that he keeps surviving (no president to fire him). 4. 2027 Football Recruiting Starts at 1:20:46 Doesn't look any different from a Harbaugh class at this point. If you're good at scouting and developing you're fine. OL class is small but Lipsey stacks another elite tackle and they had to fend off ND for Louis Esposito, Rouleau is a Frey-type. Xavier Muhammad is a very good DT, Tavares Harrington a find at CB, and they held onto some important guys in-state in a good Michigan year. LB recruiting is still underfunded, Brian is fine with that because it's very a "what's in your head" position with no consensus on what schools want. State of the recruiting industry: Paramount got bought and 247 is getting raided as incompetent ownership sets in. On3 is more reactive to scouting this cycle, and almost universally rate M commits higher. White whales: #1 is CB Josh Dobson, Seth Tillman would be a big, big deal because DTs are hard to come by, Monsanna Torbert would be a big win over Ohio State. Lincoln Mageo would be a good OL to finish with. Would like to have more TEs coming in. 5. World Cup Starts at 1:50:04 Takes hotter than Dusty May's agent. Count how many times Brian calls USA "Michigan." Are the Americans the most pleased with their performance in Group Phase (2nd to Canadians). Freeman (son of Antonio) is very reliable defensively, main thing is you can put Dest at wing. Sauciest player in US history? McKenzie is everywhere, runs into the box from deep were especially effective vs Paraguay. Pulisic injury: not going to play him in the useless Turkey game, should be fine. Tim Ream has been trying to play soccer for us forever, always been the best guy on the ball. Decent draw, should be favored (when they make the field) for a couple of rounds. Success point is get to the quarters; they can go into a game against a world power and expect to compete, not win, and not win three in a row. Four years ago they were too young. Don't mind the 48-team format; it saps a lot of tension out of the Group Stage when three teams advance, but a lot of "small teams" have battled. Brazil is still working back to being BRAZIL. Send us Fan MailA toxic job can teach you more in three months than a “dream role” can teach you in six years. Danielle Frank knows that firsthand. She started as a Miramax Films PR insider traveling the world for premieres and festivals, then moved to Los Angeles and walked straight into an agency culture that made her body scream “nope.” That moment becomes the spark for a bigger conversation about listening to yourself even when your career looks successful from the outside, and how “embracing the pivot” can lead you to the work you were meant to do.Danielle takes us from Bacardi to Moët Hennessy and into the heart of wine storytelling: the romance, the memories, and the history that shows up in every glass. We also geek out on what makes wine feel intimidating and how she tries to make wine knowledge simple and accessible, including a great detour into the legacy behind Veuve Clicquot and why story is sometimes the best pairing. Then we get into her book, A Wine Lover's Guide to Parenting, a humor-forward read that uses wine terms to deliver real lessons about raising decent humans. We talk manners, consistency, tough love, and the hard truth that sometimes your kid might be the one causing harm outside the home. We also explore what it means to be a nurturing adult even if you are not a parent, plus the idea of productive struggle and why letting kids fall safely can build confidence over time.If you like honest parenting talk with a sharp sense of humor and you want a fresh take on wine culture and connection, hit play, share this with a fellow parent or wine lover, and subscribe so you do not miss what we do next. After you listen, will you leave a review and tell us the best “pause and breathe” moment you've had as a parent? Please be sure to checkout our website for previous episodes, our psych-approved resource page, and connect with us on social media! In this deeply personal episode, Sharran shares the parenting philosophy he and his wife use to raise resilient, capable, and grounded children. Sharran explains the internal conflict many successful parents face: wanting to protect their children from struggle while also knowing that doing hard things is what built their own strength and character. Through vulnerable stories about his children, Sharran reveals a practical framework for raising emotionally strong kids in a world designed for comfort and distraction. This episode is a must-listen for parents who want to raise capable humans, not entitled ones.“There's only one constant: doing hard things is what makes you successful.”- Sharran SrivatsaaTimestamps:03:35 - The parenting conflict between comfort and hardship05:51 - Lesson #1: Learning new skills builds resilience07:29 - Lesson #2: Teaching focus in a distracted world09:13 - Lesson #3: “F your mood, follow the plan”11:03 - Lesson #4: Delayed gratification and impulse control13:37 - Lesson #5: Teaching kids not to quit15:45 - Recap: How to raise decent kidsResources:- The Next Billion by Sharran Srivatsaa - https://sharransrivatsaa.substack.com/- Acquisition.com - https://www.acquisition.com/- Board Member: ARC Multifamily Real Estate Investing - https://arcmf.com/- Board Member: The Real Brokerage - https://www.joinreal.com/Connect with Sharran:- Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/likesharran- Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/sharransrivatsaa/- X - https://x.com/sharran- LinkedIn - http://www.linkedin.com/in/sharran- YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzpl_gT1bVB1iNZl9yQbWuA?sub_confirmation=1- Threads - https://www.threads.com/@sharransrivatsaa

Step into Episode 204 of On The Delo as Delo sits down with Teddy, a fifth-generation Arizona native and co-founder of Pretty Decent Concepts, for a wide-ranging conversation about music, grit, marriage, and building one of Phoenix's most creative restaurant groups from the ground up. From touring the country on $7 a day with his rock band Hollywood Heartthrob to winning a million-dollar raffle and losing it all chasing the music dream — and then betting everything on Downtown Phoenix before anyone else believed in it — Teddy's story is a masterclass in persistence, pivoting, and playing the long game. The conversation covers how Teddy and his wife Katie built their restaurant group concept by concept, starting with a bootstrapped Chico Malo at Cityscape in Downtown Phoenix, navigating chef drama and a complete menu overhaul weeks before opening, opening and ultimately shuttering Chico Malo Miami after a four-year battle with neighbors, and doubling down on Tempe when everyone said it couldn't work. Teddy also shares the creative philosophy behind their cinematic concepts, why he treats every restaurant like an album, how collaboration with talent like Scott Conant on the upcoming Roman God of Fire sets them apart, and why a rising tide lifts all ships when it comes to building great neighborhoods. If you're in hospitality, entrepreneurship, or just love the Arizona food scene, this episode is packed with real insight and great stories.Chapter Guide (Timestamps):(0:00 - 1:41) Delo's Intro, Episode 204, and Welcoming Teddy(1:42 - 3:34) Fifth-Generation Arizona Roots, Sun Devil Marching Band, and West Side Phoenix(3:35 - 7:19) Hollywood Heartthrob, Warped Tour, Record Label, and Music Industry Lessons(7:20 - 10:57) Every Failure Translates: Business Lessons from Music to Restaurants(10:58 - 13:49) Building with Katie: Partnership, Marriage, and 17 Years of Growing Together(13:50 - 17:03) Life on Tour, $7 a Day, and Katie Running Merch on the Road(17:04 - 18:25) Winning the Million-Dollar Health & Wealth Raffle and Taking the Cash Option(18:26 - 24:36) Opening Chico Malo: Downtown Phoenix, Chef Drama, Menu Pivots, and the Underdog Win(24:37 - 26:38) Chico Malo Miami: COVID, Hotel Rooms with a Toddler, and Knowing When to Walk Away(26:39 - 32:18) Betting on Tempe: Filthy Animal, Doubters, a Rising Tide, and the ASU Generation(32:19 - 36:10) Pat Tillman, Jake Plummer, ASU Lore, and the Rose Bowl Memory(36:11 - 38:23) Roman God of Fire, Scott Conant, Forgive Me Father, and What's Opening in June(38:24 - 40:48) Wren and Wolf, the California Group That Never Opened, and Downtown Phoenix Today(40:49 - 44:31) Rapid Fire: Coffee, Aliens, Bench Press, Richardson's, and Rapid-Fire Wrap-Up
