I am pleased that the House legend Joey Anderson is my guest in Portal Episode 54. Patterns of Perception returns with a snapshot of the Finnish scene: a collection of fast psychedelic techno from Helsinki artist HOMI with a slow-burning remix from VC-118A. Inspired by fast '90s techno in the vein of Detroit legend Rod Modell, the record is at turns delicate yet powerful, high energy yet melancholic. It also marks a turning point for the artist, coinciding with a shift away from a pure jamming approach and an expansion of his music-making techniques in the studio, adding greater depth and complexity to his output. Our premiere for today, SmallBisnes, comes as a bonus track of the digital edition, and it fits perfectly for closing this excellent release. SmallBisnes is a quirky breakbeat techno voyage with synths that ebb and flow over the rumbling groove, slowly easing the tension and creating tranquility toward the journey's end. The release was mastered in Berlin by Patterns of Perception's Andreas Maan, with artwork by fellow collective member Ray Pham. The man of the hour is Peter Koronios, the drummer for Long Island's prog-rockers IMITATOR! IMITATOR is a brand-spanking-new band, and they released their first single June 18th via SoundCloud & Bandcamp, with another song on the way this month, and an EP to all streaming platforms in August. In this episode, Peter chats about their latest song “Correspondence,” forming this band with life-long friends, and “embracing the joy you derive from your influences.” And we also touch on ghosts and lunchmeat. In the last year we have been flying to each other cities a couple of times, having long and intense studio sessions and now we are in the final stage of finishing an album. VC-118A is a firm favourite with electro’s most hardcore fans. The Dutchman - who also works as Mohlao and Multicast Dynamics - covers every shade from moody and insular to purely for the floor. He’s a regular on the most reliable labels in the scene including Delsin (where he just released his new album 'Inside'), Frustrated Funk and Radio Matrix, and always manages to get rich contrasts in his music that make it as impactful as it is thoughtful. He’s also one of the most able live acts in the game; someone who soundtracks imaginary movies that play out while you’re lost in the darkness. He keeps it high tempo over the course of an hour here, with corrugated drum funk and glistening sci-fi synths all racing along and taking you with them. At times there is an aggressive sense of industrialism to the music, but just when the pressure is about to get too much, you’re off into more eerie and empty sonic worlds that forever keep you guessing. Sit back, then, and enjoy a master at work.
