Did you know the ocean contributes at least 50% of the world's oxygen? We often talk about what's happening on the land in farming on the podcast - but what's happening in the oceans, in both fishing and farming, also deserves our attention, as Alistair and I tease out in this show - the parralels are striking regarding what's going on in both globally. Alistair Allen has been an activist since he finished high school, working his way up to Captaining a Sea Shepherd ship and is now Antarctic and Marine Campaigner at the Bob Brown Foundation. He's also incredibly skilful at explaining the full picture of a ‘bad thing' and all of the downstream effects harming people, animals and the planet. We talk: Krill Fishing and the havoc it is wreaking on Antarctica and beyondOcean Current Slowdown and Why This MattersFactory Farming of Salmon and the devastating impact in Tasmania and globally. What we can all do to change both consumer habits and lend our signature and voice to these issues. I hope you find this helps you understand the “factory fishing and farming” happening in our oceans, looking at these two different, yet connected, issues. I learned SO MUCH. Every time you load a website, send an email, or update an app, you're quietly relying on a handful of unglamorous services that route your packets to the right place: DNS to translate names into addresses, and BGP to figure out how to actually get there. When these systems break, or get attacked, the Internet doesn't just slow down but stops working. For more than 25 years, NLnet Labs has been one of the small, non-profit teams keeping that core infrastructure running. Their software, including the DNS servers NSD and Unbound, the RPKI tools Krill and Routinator, and the new DNSSEC signer Cascade, is deployed everywhere from hobbyist Pi-Hole setups to Let's Encrypt and major Internet operators. And increasingly, it's written in Rust!In this episode, I talk to Arya Khanna and Martin Hoffmann from NLnet Labs about what it takes to maintain critical Internet infrastructure as a small team, why they bet on Rust for new projects like the domain crate and Cascade and what the rest of us can learn from a codebase whose users include the people who keep your routes flowing.

Dr. Luke Bucci joined Jerry for a conversational podcast discussion about health and nutrition, particularly focusing on aging after 40. The conversation covered specific supplement recommendations from Juvenon, particularly their BloodFlow 7 product focused on nitric oxide production, and Dr. Bucci shared insights about nutritional testing and the importance of understanding individual health needs through proper testing rather than relying solely on conventional medical approaches. Key takeaways After age 40, the body undergoes significant changes, but maintaining a healthy, functional body is achievable through proper nutrition, exercise, and supplementation The three most important supplements for everyone are vitamin D3, magnesium, and omega-3s Exercise, particularly strength training, is essential for preventing muscle loss and maintaining functionality as we age Diet should focus on whole, fresh foods prepared at home rather than processed or restaurant foods Blood flow and nitric oxide production decline significantly with age, dropping 20% by age 40 in healthy individuals and 60% in unhealthy individuals Nutritional changes and supplementation require 3-4 months to show meaningful results, not just weeks Krill oil may be superior to fish oil for omega-3 supplementation due to better absorption and reduced oxidation Dr. Luke Bucci is the Chief Scientific Officer of Juvenon, a clinical nutritionist, and a recognized leader in nutritional science with 37+ years in the dietary supplement industry working with Nobel Prize-winning scientists. Philippe is the third generation of the legendary family of Jacques Cousteau and a founder of the youth group Earth Echo International. Ashlan is a former entertainment journalist who now reports on the doings of sea stars and influencers of climate. Together they've produced ocean documentaries for CNN, the Discovery Channel and others, written books including ‘Oceans for Dummies' and now are engaged in an effort to protect Antarctica's Southern Ocean. They are supporting the establishment of protected areas and opposing massive commercial krill fishing that threatens the sea life, including penguins and whales, that depend on these tiny crustaceans. They have also launched an Omega 3 algae-based supplement – SeaVoir - to provide a healthier alternative to krill (or fish) oil that they also discuss. So, a fascinating encounter with a dynamic ocean duo. Please do listen in. ** Additional Resources **SeaVoir — Building on the spirit of the Cousteau legacy of ocean exploration and conservation. Matts Johansen.

News of Australia's "humpback comeback" is making waves globally. Numbers of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) on the nation's east coast have rebounded to an estimated 50,000 from a historic low of just a few hundred before commercial whaling was outlawed in the 1970s. And wildlife scientist and whale expert Vanessa Pirotta joins the podcast to discuss this inspiring conservation achievement. Pirotta emphasizes this is a good news story that deserves to be celebrated, and that it could also bolster action for other whale species that are struggling, including the southern right whale (Eubalaena australis) and blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus). However, she stresses that vigilant protection for all whale species remains necessary. This good news is tempered by the fact that the key food source for humpbacks in this part of the world is Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba), which is now being heavily harvested by industrial fishing fleets after protections for the species recently lapsed. Pirotta notes that krill are a keystone species for both humpbacks and a much broader array of marine life, including penguins and seals. Pirotta also discusses her cetacean health research based on the collection of "whale snot" (see Mongabay's explainer video about this method, which involves the use of drones, here) and whale monitoring work conducted with Indigenous conservation group Gamay Bay Rangers. Listeners can learn more about her work at vanessapirotta.com and find her book, Humpback Highway, here. Find the Mongabay Newscast wherever you listen to podcasts, from Apple to Spotify. Krill oil helps preserve muscle and boost energy in elderly adults and people who are trying to lose weight (especially when reducing calories significantly over time) A recent study found that people taking 4 grams of krill oil daily retained more muscle strength and size while fasting compared to those who took a placebo In adults over 65, krill oil improved grip strength, thigh muscle thickness, and neuromuscular response — even without added exercise — after just six months of use Krill oil helped muscle cells burn fat more efficiently and increased levels of leucine, a key amino acid that signals your body to build new muscle tissue Krill oil also activated genes that help transport sugar into muscle cells for energy use, supporting both metabolic health and muscle performance from the inside out

In episode 122 of Game Design Unboxed: Inspiration to Publication, we talk with owner of MaKa Games and designer of License to Krill, Matthew Kambic, about how a pun inspired his debut game — and how he brought it to life with a custom plushie component. Matthew shares how his engineering background, early love of games, and deep dive into research (contrary to popular belief, he's not a marine biologist!) helped shape the project. We talk about the trials and tribulations of manufacturing, Kickstarter strategies, building crowdfunding communities through comments, and the importance of critical but constructive feedback from playtesters outside your inner circle. We also discuss the details of the surprisingly complex manufacturing process behind the plushie (including some unusual state-specific laws!), the importance of building strong vendor relationships, and the financial realities of quantity pricing and investment. In this solo podcast episode I discuss why I believe Pure Krill oil is SUPERIOR to Fish oil and have done for almost 10 years now. Pure Krill oil has a phospholipid backbone which makes the DHA and EPA it contains more bioavailable and efficacious. I recommend avoiding nearly all commercial fish oil supplements, because the DHA and EPA are delivered in the form of ethyl esters. Ethyl esters are the least bioavailable and cheapest form of omega-3. But a new lysophospholipid form of DHA found in Krill oil shows promise for preventing macular decline that often occurs alongside chronic inflammation and diseases like Alzheimer's and diabetes. Whereas the DHA in most fish oil supplements cannot reach the retina, where DHA concentrates, LPC-DHA crosses into the retina from the bloodstream easily. Story at-a-glance Krill oil lowered liver fat, deep belly fat, and triglyceride levels in obese mice, showing it helps reverse the core drivers of fatty liver disease Krill oil reduced oxidative stress and activated natural antioxidant enzymes, helping cells protect themselves from damage caused by fat overload Krill oil improved insulin sensitivity by lowering insulin levels and boosting adiponectin, a hormone that helps your body burn fat and use sugar properly Unlike fish oil, krill oil's omega-3s are bound to phospholipids, making them easier to absorb and more effective at targeting inflammation and fat buildup Krill oil outperformed a prescription cholesterol drug in several key markers and did so without side effects, offering a safer way to restore metabolic health
Welcome to Episode 122! Today, we'll begin our exploration of the large and diverse clade Malacostraca, which includes the shrimp, lobsters, and crabs. We'll start with the earliest branches and offshoot groups, many of which, like the krill, have become widespread, abundant, and critically important for global ecosystems.

How a helpless baby bird protects itself from hungry huntersThere's not a more vulnerable creature in nature than a baby bird. Tiny and immobile, they're easy pickings for predators. But the chicks of the white-necked jacobin hummingbird have evolved a unique defence. They disguise themselves as poisonous caterpillars to discourage those that might eat them. Jay Falk, an NSF postdoctoral fellow at the University of Colorado and Scott Taylor, director of the Mountain Research Station and associate professor at the University of Colorado, studied these birds in Panama. Their research was published in the journal Ecology.Seals have a sense of their oxygen levels, which makes them better diversSeals can dive at length to tremendous depth thanks to some remarkable adaptations, like the ability to collapse their lungs, and radically lower their heart rate. Chris McKnight, a senior research fellow at the University of St Andrews Sea Mammal Research Unit in Scotland, led a study looking to see if tweaking oxygen and C02 levels changed the seals' dive times. The researchers discovered that the seals have the unique ability to measure the oxygen levels in their tissues, so they can anticipate when they need to return to the surface before they get into trouble. The research was published in the journal Science.Fruit flies can show a playful sideAs the joke goes, time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana. Researchers recently demonstrated that fruit flies enjoy more than just aged produce. Using a custom carousel built to fly scale, scientists found that some, but not all, of their fruit flies would play on it, enjoying an activity that had nothing to do with the necessities of life. This brings up the possibility of variability in personality for fruit flies. Wolf Hütteroth is an associate professor at Northumbria University, Newcastle and was part of the team, whose research was published in the journal Current Biology.Scaring krill with a dose of penguin pooKrill, the small, shrimp-like creatures that swarm the world's oceans and are particularly abundant in southern oceans, play a big role in marine food webs, connecting microscopic organisms with many of the oceans' larger animal species. Researchers in Australia investigated how krill respond to predator cues, like the smell of their feces. Nicole Hellessey, from the University of Tasmania, said the mere whiff of penguin feces affects the Antarctic krills' feeding behaviour and causes them to take frantic evasive action. The study is published in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science. Fossils tell us what dinosaurs were. How do we know what they did? Dinosaur bones can tell amazing stories about these prehistoric beasts, but how do we piece together how they behaved? A new book dives into the many lines of evidence that can shed light on the behaviour of these extinct creatures. From fossils, to tracks they left behind, to their modern day descendents, paleontologist David Hone from Queen Mary University of London explores how scientists develop robust theories about how dinosaurs lived in his new book, Uncovering Dinosaur Behavior: What They Did and How We Know.

An episode that's out of this world! Here's what's in store for today's episode: * In this episode, Matt and Angela explore the autistic coding in the sci-fi series The Orville and the role its showrunner, Seth MacFarlane, plays in shaping this representation.* Seth MacFarlane may be one of us—his intense special interests and strong sense of justice are hallmark autistic traits.* As MacFarlane's popularity in Hollywood grew, so did his willingness to speak out. He called out Kevin Spacey's crimes before they were widely known to the public and also publicly condemned Harvey Weinstein.* Seth MacFarlane had a deep special interest in Star Trek: The Next Generation, even featuring its stars as guest actors in episodes of Family Guy. He aspired to be a showrunner for Star Trek: The Next Generation and pitched reboot concepts, but they were either denied or not picked up. While his 2017 show The Orville is technically unrelated to Star Trek, it feels like MacFarlane's own take on the franchise.* Everyone on The Orville has a more or less direct counterpart in Star Trek: The Next Generation, with numerous interdimensional links and hidden Easter eggs woven throughout the show.* We explore the show's themes of gender identity, including the rampant misogyny within Moklin culture, where women are so despised that they are forcibly altered to become male. We also discuss the show's gay coding and its deeper implications.* Matt and Angela discuss how The Orville features many of the same cast members from Seth MacFarlane's other projects, much like the signature casting styles of Tim Burton or David Lynch. They also touch on how MacFarlane's Ted TV series is another standout work.* We discuss autistic pretty privilege and how Seth MacFarlane may be leveraging it to his advantage in Hollywood.* We explore the possibility that Seth MacFarlane uses monotropic focus to write The Orville and his other works, honing in on specific interests and themes with intense attention.* Our hosts talk about autistic-coded characters in The Orville, like Isaac, who displays autistic traits such as a focus on accuracy and a strong sense of self-awareness.* Season three of The Orville highlights Isaac's justice sensitivity, as he is ostracized and treated like a pariah for refusing to support genocide, in contrast to the rest of his race.* The move from Fox to Hulu proved to be beneficial for the show, allowing it to further explore social justice themes and highlight the autistic-coded traits in its characters.* The show features a character on Krill who manipulates a cult of personality to stir up frenzy against the Union, echoing the tactics of a certain orange man. Fox, with its religious ties, was hesitant to prioritize storylines like this, but after switching to Hulu, MacFarlane was able to dive deeper into these themes.* The show offers remarkable autistic-coded representation, with the Moklins and the Zileans being very by-the-book, Bortus and Klyden forming the perfect autistic-coded gay couple, and Seth MacFarlane's showrunning tying all the autism representation together.* Finally, we discuss the upcoming season 4, which has been teased, and share our thoughts on what's in store for the future of this incredibly autistic program.“If you haven't seen The Orville, if there's anything that I can say to convince you to see The Orville - four words: Dolly Parton laser fight. It's a thing that happens.” - Matt “A lot of people consider autistic people to be devoid of social characteristics, but he [Seth MacFarlane] is very, very good at socializing. He's very, very good at telling jokes. He's very good at being open and himself.” - Matt“I think when you add the hyper-connected brain and the smart and talented, people want to be around us, and then they're around us for a few minutes and they're like, ‘these people are f*****g annoying. Let's get them off the project and take full credit for their work. That's it. If you are hearing this and a light bulb is going off, just know you're normal. That's part of our culture. They take our ideas and run with them and kick us off the project. But somehow, Seth stays in there. You go, my guy.” - AngelaDid you enjoy this episode? We talk about autistic coding in The Orville, the impact of monotropic focus, and how the show reflects themes of justice, gender identity, and more. Nick talked about creating the ultimate custom mix template, finding your ideal studio listening level, why you should only use two volumes, ninja tips for Soundflow and Avid S1, de-essing vocal tricks, and fx chains. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Nick Krill, an indie rock producer, mixer, and engineer. Nick's interest in the studio began as a teenager when he would spend weekends in a basement 4-track studio with his band, The Spinto Band. Nick spent the first part of his career simultaneously playing in bands and recording and mixing other artists in the studio. In the early 2000s, The Spinto Band gained notoriety and went on to release 4 LPs and tour extensively in North America and Europe. After the Spinto Band went on hiatus, Nick spent four years touring and recording with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. In 2018 Nick decided to focus solely on the studio side of his work, and now produces, mixes, and engineers indie rock full time. Some highlights of his recording work include: - Recording and mixing two volumes of "A Philly Special Christmas" (Which went on to chart on in the top 10 on various Billboard charts and had a No.1 iTunes single), - Producing and mixing the "I Can't Handle Change" EP by Roar (This EP now has over 700 million Spotify streams, and the song "Christmas Kids" charted in the UK last year) - Working as a recording engineer on the last two War On Drugs Lps ("A Deeper Understanding" and "I Don't Live Here Anymore") - Producing and mixing the most recent Generationals LP "Heatherhead."
