"I'm like a collector—everything I come across makes it into my music." The dance music don talks about the music that shaped him and his recent L.B. Dub Corp album on Dekmantel. Luke Slater, the British DJ, producer and occasional drummer, has been making music under a slew of monikers since the '80s: Planetary Assault Systems, L.B. Dub Corp, LSD, The 7th Plain, Clementine—the list goes on. While he's put out an excellent range of dynamic analogue music that runs the gamut of house, acid, breakbeat, electro and even spoken word, he's probably best known for his productions and live shows that focus on sleek and solid techno, as showcased on Ostgut Ton and his own imprint, Mote-Evolver. In the latest instalment of our flagship live series Playing Favourites, Slater unpacks the tracks that, for him, best illustrate the history of techno at large, as well as the records that define his creative process and career trajectory. He speaks with Chloe Lula live from Polifonic festival about his love of Detroit and Underground Resistance, as well as the abiding influence of hip-hop on his early work and his love of intentionally integrating mistakes in his music. He also reflects on how he became the first non-German artist to release on Berghain's esteemed record label, as well as discussing his most recent release, Saturn to Home, for Dekmantel. The double LP saw him return to his drumming practice and introduce surprising and powerful collaborations from electronic music contemporaries and vocalists like Kittin and the poet Benjamin Zephaniah. As we revel in this yearly ritual, I want to share some insights about the incredible artists who've graced this mix.This year's lineup is a vibrant tapestry of techno talent. We start with Rebuke's 'Glow,' a track that perfectly sets the tone with its energetic beats. Following up, Zimmz's 'Qualia' and Danny Avila's 'Chase The Sun' add unique layers of intensity and rhythm. We've got a massive premiere to kick off the week as legendary UK techno producer Planetary Assault Systems steps up to remix Italian producer Mattia Trani. The Mote Evolver boss gives ‘One More Step' the P.A.S. treatment as he steps up with a hammering rework, leaning on pummeling low-end and relentless percussive workouts. Pushmaster Discs and Mattia Trani present one of the most authoritative techno remix LPs of the year as the Italian producer showcases a rework compilation of his last album “Scenery”. Mattia invited his favourite producers of the past and present to create their own vision of his music. The remix album is due 30 June and will be released on vinyl, split in 3 parts, and digital. The LP presents remixes from a broad spectrum of techno producers, spanning various sounds, textures, eras, and flavours, the LP is an all-encompassing look into Mattia Trani's influences and vision of techno. We present the remix from modern-day legend Planetary Assault Systems aka Luke Slater. The UK techno don conjures up a classic-sounding P.A.S. rework, leaning into percussively functional tracks in his arsenal that have been wrecking dancefloors within recent years. Slater show's shades of early Mills on his remix, jacking up the swing and intensity, creating a whirlpool of scrambling percussive intensity. A veritable powerhouse of the Croatian techno scene Insolate has been establishing a global presence as a DJ and producer for over 20 years delivering as both a label boss at Out Of Place and the creative force behind their electrifying TRAUM events. Hailing from Osijek, Croatia, on the wide Croatian East – a town that at first glance a heavy industrial atmosphere overshadows, she is making her first steps as a DJ back in 1997 before taking over European and worldwide clubs. Her list of clubs and partys she played is impressive and includes Berghain, Rex, Tresor, Under Club, Club d'Anvers, Unter, Exit Festival, Tomorrowland, ADE and Dimensions Festival. Amongst many European clubs she played numerous tours in Colombia and recently added USA, China and Argentina to the list. As a producer, she's had a string of releases on highly respected labels including DJ Deep's Deeply Rooted, Marcelus's Singular and Developer's Modularz - supported and played by some of techno's finest including Laurent Garnier, DVS1, Dax J and Ilario Alicante. Also she released the stellar Obscure Object Of Desire EP on JoeFarr's new User Experience imprint, EP for a Suara and beautiful EP for Proletarijat, label run by Sev Dah. She also contributed to Ben Sim's compilation Tribology among giants as Planetary Assault Systems, Oscar Mulero, Steffi etc. and also made super interesting collaboration with french producer Arnaud le Texier and released EP with him for Prodigal Son. In 2019. she announced her debut album. The album Order is Chaos was released as a double vinyl and contains 10 tracks with extremely interesting collaborations with MATRIXXMAN and singer SARA RENAR. DJ Mag (UK) described album as “exciting journey thru trans-dimensional vocals, acid drenched sequences and floor obligated bangers.” Insolate is also a major contributor to the Croatian techno scene, so much so that she was in Ibiza to receive the award for "Dance Nation of the Year" at the DJ Awards on behalf of her nation. Her and long-time partner in crime Volster also run the event series TRAUM in her native Osijek. TRAUM events have cemented their place in the clubbing calendar with quality artists like Paula Temple, Antigone, Cassegrain, Janice, Etapp Kyle and Milton Bradley, just to name a few. The success of the TRAUM nights caught the attention of Red Bull Music Academy and Dimensions – both of which they have hosted official events for. Insolate being an international messenger of techno was recognised by Ambassador award that gave her a title "Croatia's ambassador overseas" for 2017. The final part of putting Osijek on the techno map was taken in 2015 with the launch of the label Out Of Place which Insolate runs with Volster. The label was named in honour of the beautiful struggle of carving your own way into the scene from a place that's well off the grid from the traditional capitals of techno. Now five releases strong, the label has already had contributions from heavyweights like Milton Bradley, Developer, JoeFarr, Francois X, Janice and many more. As a DJ, Insolate is well known for her no-compromise, pure-bred techno sets. It's clear to anyone who's seen her perform that she's an artist with a lot of experience but also plenty of inspiration and ambition, and a deep knowledge of techno. She is simply a natural presence in a DJ booth. If you've seen her play, you will know exactly what this means.

Our final premiere of the week comes from Minneapolis based techno producer Lonefront, who's supplied a deep and hypnotic techno cut, perfect for murky basement clubs. An artist out of Minneapolis by way of the Bay Area, Lonefront produces explorative techno cuts as well as his performances as a live modular act, appearing on bills alongside DVS1, Volvox and Planetary Assault Systems. Now, the Minnesotan producer brings his dynamic take on the genre to Kajunga Records with two tracks pressed on wax across ‘Additive Spectra / South Of Forever'. Lead track ‘Additive Spectra' is a loopy affair awash with alarming bleeps, moody low-ends and sharp percussion, before B2's ‘South Of Forever' provides a twisted, eerie soundscape as shadowy synths churn throughout this slice of modular grooves. ‘South Forever' is deep and grimy, reminiscent of the classic Klockworks releases and cathartic dances at Berghain. Trippy melodies play off misty atmospheres, causing chilling and fine-drawn tension. This is modern day minimalism at its finest. Our first local selection mix of the year comes from one of Ireland's most prolific DJ's & producers, Nathan Jones aka, Snakebite 616. The Dublin native has pieced together a blend of jackin' & menacing techno rhythms, from bonafide techno anthems to niche grooves. Only a trickle of techno selectors in Ireland have a resume that comes even close to Snakebite 616's fka Nathan Jones. The seasoned selector has held his own alongside Jeff Mills, DJ Pete, Ben Ufo, Blawan, Chris Libeing, Cari Lekebusch, Shifted and a many more, as well as holding it down in Berlin and The UK on numerous occasions, once again on immense lineups. Since Nathan settled upon his fresh alias, Snakebite 616 the DJ & producer has received great success and seem's to be reaching his great magnum opus. His track ‘Right Of Passage' released on the newly born ‘Ogham Records' is ageing like a fine wine, as we run further away from the release date, the track seems to be garnering even more applause. Receiving support from DJ's all through Ireland and Europe, and has been an absolute staple in any set I was lucky enough to play last year. For the inaugural Local Selection Mix of 2022, we present Snakebite 616 as he's dispensed a top-tier, high octane techno workout. With Epic live sets, Moteka as become one of the leading act of the french label Skryptom with a dark, percussive, hypnotic techno and perfectly mastered production skills. This bedroom mix was recorded as a DJ demo nearly 20 years ago with a pair of Technics 1200s and a Numark Pro-SM3 mixer; it contains a splendid set of late nineties techno featuring both familiar and more obscure artists. My motivation for re-releasing this mix was due to receiving a text from my friend Owen (formerly known as Owen The Soyboy and more commonly known nowadays as The RhythmDial); I gave him a copy of this mix back in the day, and he wished to feature it on his show on Fnoob Techno Radio, Inner Loop. I was honored to receive such exposure, particularly since I was working my way back into the DJ realm. The show was only 60 minutes long, so it could not feature the full mix, so I am presenting it for you now, dear listener. The mix subtitle comes from the final track, which was a common thrift store find at the time the mix was created. Acid Camp gives a warm welcome to Shingo Suwa. After making the long trek to Berlin from Tokyo he's found a comfortable home in the city's techno scene as a producer and dj. In 2008 he founded the label Merkur Schallplatten, which will release a new Suwa EP this year and will be followed up by his debut on Acid Camp Records. Today we have a live recording from his set from Buttons, which he holds a residency at, highlighting his passion for bounding, rhythmic techno. After years spent paying his dues in Milan’s historic clubs, from Old Fashion to Trattoria Toscana, in unauthorized centri sociali or ‘squat clubs’, fashion shows and radio work, he turned his attention to production. He explored a variety of genres, from trip hop to swing, passing through jungle, West London and Detroit house, to deep house, while never abandoning jazz – the wildest and most impeccable of all - progressively building a digital project. Out of this came the concept of Jazzy, the ability to make jazz and electronic music communicate. This passion is also manifest in the Oneboy project - musical instruments played live to a DJ set. Giuseppe put this project together with writer Tatiana Carelli under the name Taji bpm. Oneboy performed at the 2007 Salone Del Mobile furniture show, at various national festivals and events and on an Italian tour in 2008. Also with Taji he created the Discokit® project, a kind of “sensory stimulation kit” – the dance club becomes ‘takeaway’ and enters the world of art with more than 60 events held over two years. The discography is varied and rich in international collaborations, starting with releases for Multivitamins (UK), then for the PRO-TEZ (Russia), The dub (IT) and Vibe Me Records (ES).
