Donald Trump has run out of tricks in Iran. The war has not gone the way he had planned, nobody supports it, and now we are basically waiting for him to accept a bad deal and say it's a good deal. To make a long story short, this war is a catastrophe and nothing is certain. But after Orbán's defeat in Hungary and Trump's ever-increasing popularity ahead of the 2026 midterms, could there be hope? Tom Nichols joins Ed Luce, Rosa Brooks, and David Rothkopf to discuss what this war means for our geopolitical future. Looking for More from the DSR Network? For the second time in recorded primatology, a civil war has been observed between chimpanzees. This week, the guys get a little philosophical about the unique status of mankind as a political animal and the unlikelihood that we have much to learn from the chimps—progressive optimism and cash grabs notwitstanding. Meanwhile, Viktor Orbán lost the Hungarian election to Péter Magyar, a result misinterpreted by the Left as a pro-immigration, anti-nationalist repudiation of conservatism globally. What's really going on in Hungary, and what does it mean for us at home?Recommended:These Chimps Began the Bloodiest ‘War' on Record. No One Knows Why.Orbán Is Gone. The fall of Viktor Orbán marks more than the end of a long political era in Hungary; it represents a significant defeat for a broader ideological movement that has stretched far beyond the country's borders. For years, Orbán stood not only as Hungary's dominant political figure but as a central architect of a transnational model of governance—one that challenged liberal democratic norms while maintaining the outward form of electoral legitimacy. His departure therefore reverberates far beyond Budapest, sending shockwaves through a network of political actors across Europe and the United States who viewed him as both a pioneer and a guide. Viktor Orbán prehral a prehral drvivo. No kým naši južní susedia po 16 rokoch vymenia režim a možno aj systém, nás na Slovensku parlamentné voľby ešte len čakajú. Či si niečo z tých Maďarských vieme odniesť, či výmena Orbána robí starosti Robertovi Ficovi a či teraz osamotený vo svojom boji proti Bruselu nezmení svoju politiku? Miképp kezelték a Fideszben a kegyelmi botrányt? Mikor kezdték el komolyan venni a Magyar Péter jelentette kihívást? Miképp akadályozták Orbán Viktor meggyőződései a gazdasági fellendülést? Készültek a Fideszben a vereségre? Ha igen, milyen forgatókönyveket vehetnek most elő?
Rachel Maddow highlights some striking parallels between Donald Trump and the authoritarian regime his administration is modeled on, Victor Orbán in Hungary. Maddow notes that the basis for an authoritarian's power is the sense that their continued rule is inevitable, so seeing Orbán tossed from power so handily by the voters of Hungary sends a clear and upsetting message to Trump, and an encouraging message to Trump's opponents. David Pressman, former U.S. ambassador to Hungary, joins to discuss how Hungary will "unwind" the legacy of corruption and authoritarianism left behind by Victor Orbán and restore democracy. Rachel Maddow tells the story of an ICE prison in Mesa, Arizona that would move immigrants out of the facility ahead of congressional oversight visits to conceal overcrowded conditions ...until members of Congress dropped in unannounced. Rep. Analita Grijalva talks about what she saw on a surprise inspection of the facility. Want more of Rachel? Despite military pressure, these groups remain active, with the Houthis potentially held in reserve to threaten critical global shipping lanes.3. The Internal Struggle of the Iranian People. JANATYN SAYEH discusses the regime's brutal internal crackdown, noting over a thousand executions in 2026. The Iranian people feel abandoned by the current ceasefire, fearing the regime will survive without significant systemic change.4. Identifying Iran's Hardline Five-Man Leadership. Jonathan Schanzer outlines Iran's core leadership, including Ghalibaf and Vahidi, who possess deep ties to internal repression and international terror. These veterans represent an institutional commitment to the revolution, making significant concessions unlikely.5. Holocaust Remembrance and the Iranian Ideology. Malcolm Hoenlein reflects on Yom HaShoah and rising global anti-Semitism. He discusses how Iran's radical ideology drives its leaders to claim victory despite heavy military losses, refusing to compromise on their nuclear and proxy ambitions.6. Regional Realignments and the Houthi Threat. Malcolm Hoenlein warns the Gulf States face extreme vulnerability as Iran threatens their infrastructure. The Houthis remain a strategic reserve capable of closing the Bab al-Mandeb, while Europe continues to marginalize itself by staying on the sidelines.7. Operation Roaring Lion and Strikes on Beirut. David Daoud details the IDF's Operation Eternal Darkness, which targeted 100 Hezbollah sites in under ten minutes. The strikes hit densely populated areas of Beirut, causing massive displacement and raising questions about tactical objectives.8. Hezbollah's Inseparable Link to the Iranian Regime. Iran will likely fight to preserve the group, as Hezbollah's survival is critical to its revolutionary goals.9. Peru's Shift to the Right. Alejandro Peña Esclusa reports on Peru's election, where right-wing candidates Kiko Fujimori and Rafael Lopez Aliaga are leading. This trend suggests a continental shift away from the pink tide and toward pro-Western governments.10. Political Stagnation and Repression in Venezuela. Alejandro Peña Esclusa reports that the Rodriguez brothers maintain control in Venezuela by focusing on economic compliance while delaying political transitions. Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado faces threats of imprisonment, hindering hopes for free elections and a democratic transition.11. Escalation and Extortion in the Straits. Viktor Orbán's Defeat and the European Center. Edmund Fitton-Brown analyzes the ousting of Hungary's Viktor Orbán by Peter Magyar as a victory for traditional democracy. This shift removes a major obstacle to EU aid for Ukraine and disrupts Vladimir Putin's influence.13. Ukraine's Easter Standoff and Prisoner Exchanges. John Hardy reports on Russian ceasefire violations during Orthodox Easter and significant prisoner exchanges. The removal of Viktor Orbán in Hungary is expected to unblock vital EU financial loans for the Ukrainian government.14. Iraqi Militias as Iran's Strategic Reserve. Ahmed Sharari discusses how Iraqi militias are fundraising to support Iran and Hezbollah. These groups serve as a strategic reserve for the Iranian regime, demonstrating their readiness to sacrifice resources for the revolution.15. Canada's Pivot Toward China. Conrad Black analyzes Prime Minister Mark Carney's efforts to strengthen trade with China amidst shifting relations with the US. While resource-rich Canada seeks new markets, political mistrust of China's undemocratic regime remains high.16. The Russian Mob and Political Kompromat. Craig Unger explores Viktor Orbán's long-standing ties to the Russian mafia and the FSB. He argues that both Orbán and Donald Trump have functioned as assets for Russian intelligence due to financial entanglements.
April 13, 2026Péter Magyar won the Hungarian election in a blowout, He revealed that Viktor Orbán was using government money to finance CPAC in the US, The modern day Republican Party has followed a historical pattern, endorsing the idea that society works best if a few wealthy men run everything, When Trump was elected, wealth had concentrated among the top 1% and skewing the vote was underway to advance this ideology, Orbán's model was irresistable to right wing leaders, Trump and Vance have followed Orbán's model, The dramatic rejection of Orbán by Hungarian voters represents a rejection of the radical right, FDR, calling for a “new deal” offered a blueprint for rebuilding democracy.Watch today's recording here: https://www.youtube.com/live/g9TUa1Rwd6U?si=T8_KKcHQZElhpnZ-Get full, free access to Letters from an American here: https://heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/subscribeYou can also find me:Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/hcrichardson.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/heathercoxrichardson/?hl=enFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/heathercoxrichardson/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@heathercoxrichardson Get full access to Letters from an American at heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/subscribe

On Sunday, Péter Magyar's Tisza Party defeated Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's Fidesz Party in Hungary's parliamentary elections, unseating the 16-year incumbent. With 98% of the vote counted, Orbán and Fidesz had won 56 parliamentary seats, while Magyar and Tisza Party won 137 seats, giving it a two-thirds supermajority. Orbán had been supported by the Trump administration, which viewed him as a key ally in the European Union (EU). The political world was abuzz Sunday night at the devastating defeat pro-Putin post-liberal, Viktor Orbán, suffered in Hungary's national election. Some on the American right have mistakenly cozied up to Orbán, finding some compatibility with his occasional messages about social values. But alas, even beyond the confused moral messaging, what did Orbán in is what will do all “new right” illiberals in -- a disdain for the freedom and opportunity of a market economy.

(Sursa: Eurotopics)

Orbán's loss in Hungary was so overwhelming he couldn't cheat his way out of it. But the decisive defeat for both Putin and authoritarianism may also suggest that the vibes they are a changin'. LONDINIUM CHRONICLES 2. The speakers analyze the strategic decline of the American Empire, beginning with the electoral defeat of Hungary's Viktor Orbán, whom they describe as a vassal king. Despite the intervention of "junior emperor" JD Vance, Orbán was rebuked by voters for his ties to Vladimir Putin and his increasingly complacent rule. Germanicus argues that vassal management requires a delicate touch, which the current emperor lacks, opting instead for the casual humiliation of European leaders. This high-handedness has led to open defiance from allies like the UK, France, and Italy, who now refuse to participate in an offensive war against Iran. Viktor Orbán's 16-year rule has come to an end after the opposition Tisza party, led by Péter Magyar, won the Hungarian election by a landslide. Orbán quickly conceded after what he described as a ‘painful but unambiguous' election result. All eyes are now on Magyar to see how Hungary's relationship with the EU and Nato could change after years of strained relations. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's 16 years in power are coming to an end after an election that saw massive voter turnout. Orbán was seen as a friend to both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump and his right wing government also introduced a range of policies aimed at boosting Hungary's declining birth rate, with particular focus on women as workers and mothers. Nuala McGovern talks to BBC East and Central Europe Correspondent Nick Thorpe alongside Éva Fodor, a Hungarian academic and sociologist at the Central European University, whose gender studies course was effectively banned by the Orbán government in 2018. What's the best thing about being a girl in 2026? In her new Radio 4 series, About the Girls, author and journalist Catherine Carr travels around the country to talk to girls about friendship, life online, body image and relationships. She joins Nuala to share what she learnt about the world this generation of girls are navigating. For the first time, a woman has been appointed to coach a men's team in one of Europe's top five football leagues. Marie-Louise Eta has been named interim Head Coach of Union Berlin in the German Bundesliga, the equivalent of the Premier League here. Now, four years since her death, a new exhibition, called Story Line, brings together 140 of her drawings, showcasing her life from eight to 80. Nuala is joined by Paula's son Nick Willing, who curated the exhibition, and her friend, the writer Marina Warner.Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Simon Richardson
