We have some strange beasts here in the Lone Star State. Things like a white bison. To the Indians this is considered a sign of things improving. The Black Dog of Hanging Rock is scary, but no one has died seeing it. We have our very own Tatzelwurm, maybe related to the one in the Alps. There are a lot of weird creatures to be seen or heard here in Texas.

James McMurtry, hailed as one of our greatest living songwriters, joins Rhett for a candid conversation about the craft of songwriting, life on the road, and the realities of sustaining a career in music. Known for his sharp storytelling and uncompromising perspective, McMurtry opens up about his process, from finding inspiration in small details to shaping lyrics around the musicality of the human voice. They discuss the making of his latest record, Black Dog and the Wandering Boy (New West Records), working with producer Don Dixon, and how the touring life remains both a necessity and a joy. McMurtry reflects on influences like Kris Kristofferson, lessons from decades in the business, and why persistence and endurance matter more than inspiration. Is it a dog!? Is it a calf?! No, it's something in between or just possibly a headless bear or a giant lolloping rabbit, instead. Simon and Chris debate the appearance and habits of a class of supernatural creatures Simon insists on calling, to Chris's irritation, 'furries': solitary, shaggy shapeshifters that haunted the roads and wilds of nineteenth century Britain. These ambiguous animals, with their trademark fiery, saucer-like eyes, might predict death, assault those who confront them, or protect vulnerable travelers from attack. Then there are the big questions. Did these shapeshifters make their way to the United States as Chris claims? Did they become the Alien Big Cats and Black Dogs of modern folklore, as Simon insists? Are they ghosts, cryptids, fairy-animals, or just a mangy tabby glimpsed in the moonlight? And watch out for swelling sheep on those late-night rambles.Further ReadingWilder Mann, Charles Freger https://www.charlesfreger.com/portfolio/wilder-mann-fr/Explore phantom black dogs, Bob TrubshawBlack Dog Folklore, Mark NormanMystery Big Cats, Merrily HarpurAmerican Monsters, Linda S. fWotD Episode 3041: Randy Travis Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 1 September 2025, is Randy Travis.Randy Bruce Traywick (born May 4, 1959), known professionally as Randy Travis, is an American country and gospel music singer and songwriter, as well as a film and television actor. Active since 1979, he has recorded over 20 studio albums and charted over 50 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, including sixteen that reached the number-one position. Travis's commercial success began in the mid-1980s with the release of his album Storms of Life, which was certified triple-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. He followed up his major-label debut with a string of platinum and multi-platinum albums, but his commercial success declined throughout the 1990s. In 1997, he left Warner Bros. Records for DreamWorks Records; he signed to Word Records for a series of gospel albums beginning in 2000 before transferring back to Warner at the end of the 21st century's first decade. His musical accolades include seven Grammy Awards, eleven ACM Awards, eight Dove Awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and a 2016 induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Major songs of his include "On the Other Hand", "Forever and Ever, Amen", "I Told You So", "Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart", and "Three Wooden Crosses".He is noted as a key figure in the neotraditional country movement, a return to more traditional sounds within the genre following the country pop crossovers of the early 1980s. Nearly all of his albums were produced or co-produced by Kyle Lehning, and feature frequent co-writing credits from Paul Overstreet, Don Schlitz, and Skip Ewing. Critics have compared his baritone singing voice to other artists such as Lefty Frizzell, Merle Haggard, and George Jones. Since surviving a near-fatal stroke in 2013, which severely limited his singing and speaking ability, he has released archival recordings and made limited public appearances. James Dupré has toured singing Travis's songs with his road band. Between mid-2024 and January 2025, Travis released two new songs where his voice was re-created via artificial intelligence.Travis's acting career includes roles in the television movies Wind in the Wire (1993) and A Holiday to Remember (1995), as well as the Patrick Swayze movie Black Dog (1998).This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:11 UTC on Monday, 1 September 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Randy Travis on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm long-form Danielle.

This week, your friends Count Vardulon and DM round out August by watching a trucker movie and what might be an actionable rip-off of another movie they watched this month. Not only is Black Dog chock full of trucking action, it's also educational. Wrecker, on the other hand, is really well shot but has little else going for it. Tune in to find out DM's current obsession, and stay for a truly abysmal round of horror trivia.
As autumn descends, I wanted to face a classic symbol in British and European folklore - the black dogWe start in East Anglia, England, with perhaps the most famous of all shadow hounds: Black Shuck, who makes an appearance in St Mary's church of Bungay in 1577, storms to raise havoc. And a reading drawn from Ghosts and Witches by Wentworth + Ayrton, 1991, on the Galleytrot and Shuck. Before facing:The Barghest of Yorkshire, accompanied by rattling chains, may have inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula's transformation into an enormous black dog in Whitby.Yeth Hounds (Devon)Whisht Hounds (Devon/Dartmoor)Richard Cabell's Hounds (Dartmoor) widely considered a major inspiration for Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles. The Devil's Dandy Dogs (Cornwall): A terrifying hunt led by Satan himself. The Wish Hounds or Witch Hounds of SussexThe Church Grim, a guardian spirit that appears as a large black dogAnd The Moddey Dhoo of the Isle of Man: Meaning "black dog" in Manx, this giant shaggy-haired dog that haunted Peel Castle And we finish with readings of The Moddey Doo or the Black Dog of Peel Castle from Manx Fairy Tales by Sophia Morrison, 1911 and The Book of Were-Wolves by Sabine Baring-Gould, 1865. And accounts of witch wolves from Estonia. These are just a few of the countless legends of black dogs, wolves and hounds. Do drop me a message if you would like to share your own favourites! Happy SeptemberSarah X

Award-winning poets and founding editors of the groundbreaking journal, New American Writing, Maxine Chernoff and Paul Hoover talk with Roxi Power about their most recent books from MadHat Press and how poetry canreveal then reconstitute the brokenness of the world. Hoover says of writing poetry, “You have to purposefully break a few dishes along the way. The brokenness and emotional force bring the pieces back together.” Chernoff, writing under the shadow of Covid, says, “We stand at the margins of this bustling, often cruel but beautiful world and, in a way, the poem writes itself because the world gives us conditions to think about at the same time—the ecology of the world, governments falling apart, etc. It's happening to all of us. Part of being a writer is simply noticing the moment you're in, personalizing and capturing it in a way that only your particular words at this particular time can do.” These beloved Bay Area poets collage philosophy, film, history, and—in Hoover's newest work—Old Testament stories and cadences in poems that redesign rather than restore theshattered surfaces of the world in new forms—like poetic wabi-sabi. Peter Johnson recently called Chernoff the most important contemporary prose poet born during his generation. Marjorie Perloff wrote of Paul Hoover's most recent book, “He's atthe top of his game.” Tune into this interview with two of the most articulate poets about their own craft. It's part 1 of a two-part interview. More to come! Maxine Chernoff is professor emeritus of creative writing at San Francisco State University. She is the author of 19 books of poetry and six of fiction, including recent collections from MadHat Press: Light and Clay: New and Selected Poems (2023) and Under the Music: Collected Prose Poems (2019). She is a recipient of a 2013 National Endowment for the Arts in Poetry and, along with Paul Hoover, the 2009 PEN Translation Award for their translation of The Selected Poems of Friedrich Hölderlin. In 2016 she was a visiting writer at the American Academy in Rome. A former editor of New American Writing, she lives in Mill Valley. Paul Hoover is the author of over a dozen collections of poetry; his most recent book of poetry is O, and Green: New and Selected Poems (MadHat Press, 2021). He has also published a collection of essays and a novel, and translated or co-translated a few books, including Black Dog, Black Night: Contemporary Vietnamese Poetry. Founding and current Editor of theliterary annual, New American Writing–now published by MadHat Press–and two editions of the indispensable Postmodern American Poetry: A Norton Anthology, Hooverteaches at San Francisco State University. He's also won an NEA and numerous awards, including the Carl Sandberg Award in poetry which Chernoff has also won.

Escuchar audio

A new MP3 sermon from Grace Audio Treasures is now available on SermonAudio with the following details: Title: When the big black dog is after them! Subtitle: Puritan Devotional Speaker: C. H. Surprisingly, America was formed in London. The trio of Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell, and Dan Peek met in London where their fathers were stationed at the United States Air Force base at RAF South Ruislip. The three attended London Central High School and began playing together on borrowed acoustic guitars. The name came from the Americana jukebox in the mess hall, and a desire to distinguish themselves from the British musicians around them who were trying to sound more American.America is also their self-titled debut album released in the States in January 1972. The album originally was released without “A Horse With No Name,” but when that single garnered significant commercial success it was added to a re-release of the album in early 1972. The re-released album would top the US album charts and produce two top-10 singles. The band would be a force in the folk-rock and soft rock genres for a generation. With close harmonies similar to Crosby, Stills & Nash, and complex acoustic guitar arrangements, their first seven albums would be in the top 50 on the album charts, though this first debut would be their lone chart topper to date. Their compilation album “History: America's Greatest Hits” was released at the end of 1975.America produced albums of original material up through 2015. In 1977 Dan Peek left the group to pursue music in the Contemporary Christian genre. Speculation regarding a reunion of the original members continued through the years until Peeks death in 2011.Rob brings us a great debut folk rock album in this week's podcast.RiversideThe lead off track is a good example of the original America sound. It has a laid back message: I don't want to take anything from you, and I don't want you to take anything from me. It is a “live and let live” message using a metaphor of life on two sides of the river.A Horse with No NameThis is the track that put the band on the map. Originally entitled “Desert Song” the track takes inspiration from a Salvador Dali painting and an M.C. Escher painting. Writer Dewey Bunnell created lyrics loosely based on his travels as a child with family through the deserts of Arizona and New Mexico. Three RosesBunnell paints a picture of both a quiet life and romantic uncertainty in this song inspired by his girlfriend, soon to be wife. “Three roses were bought with you in mind.” Dan Peek takes lead vocal duties on this one with subdued but complex chords and harmonies.I Need YouThe second single from the album was written by Gerry Beckley when he was 16 years old. Beckley also takes lead vocals on this ballad which went to number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. You can sense the similarity to bands like the Beatles and Alan Parsons in this track. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series “Emergency!”This first responder action series focused on Squad 51 in Los Angeles saw its debut in January 1972. STAFF PICKS:Family Affair by Sly & the Family StoneBruce begins the staff picks with the most successful hit from Sly & the Family Stone. This song topped the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks and the R&B Singles chart for five. This track is a little different for the group, as the guitars are toned down, and the electric piano (with Billy Preston on keyboard) is brought up. The lyrics talk about the ways a family can go wrong.Roundabout by YesLynch brings us a song written by singer Jon Anderson and guitarist Steve Howe. The song originated from a trip the group took in Scotland in which they encountered a number of roundabouts. The line, “in and around the lake” came from one of the lochs they passed. This opening track from Fragile was drastically edited to produce a single coming in at 3:27 rather than the over 8-minute original. It reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100, the group's highest charting single until 1983's “Owner of a Lonely Heart.”Doctor My Eyes by Jackson BrowneWayne's staff pick is a single off Browne's debut and self-titled album. The lyrics discuss the feeling that the singer is becoming jaded about life by seeing all the wrong in the world, and now being unable to cry about it. David Crosby and Graham Nash provide backing vocals to this song which went to number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. Misty Mountain Hop by Led ZeppelinRob features a song which was the B-side to Zeppelin's “Black Dog.” The lyrics take their inspiration from the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, as well as the “Legalize Pot Rally” held in Hyde Park in July 1968. It appeared on the massive Led Zeppelin IV album. As Rob says, it is a “mixture of stoner idealism and Tolkien nerdery.” COMEDY TRACK:Pigeon Song by AmericaWe exit with a little double dipping, and with gratefulness that none of us is a pigeon named Fred. I talked with him about his latest album “The Black Dog and the Wandering Boy”
"Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey Your Word." "It was good for me to be afflicted, so that I might learn Your decrees." "I know, O LORD, that Your laws are righteous, and in faithfulness You have afflicted me." Trials, in the hands of the Holy Spirit, are a great help to overcome our corruptions. The sharper the trial, the sweeter the result--when it is sanctified by the Spirit. When trials come, they whip us home to our heavenly Father! Sheep do not stray very far when the big black dog is after them--his barkings make them run to their shepherd. In the same way, affliction is the Good Shepherd's black dog which He sends to fetch us back to Him; otherwise we would wander to our ruin. When trouble comes, it should drive us to God, just as the shipwrecked sailor is driven to the shore. If the gold knew why it was cast into the fire--it would thank the Refiner for putting it there. Our heavenly Father loves us too much to exempt us from trials. Let us believe that His choicest love-letters are sent to us in black-edged envelopes. We are frightened at the envelope; but inside, if we know how to break the seal, we shall find riches for our souls. We draw nearest to God, in our brokenness. There is no school like the school of trial, and the rod of affliction is the best instructor. By affliction, the Lord separates the sin which He hates, from the soul which He loves. It is a blessed thing when the mind is brought to humbly submit to the chastisements of God, and to acquiesce in all of His providential trials. Knowing as we do, that God causes all things to work together for our good, and that we never endure a single trial more than our heavenly Fath

Send us a textWatch the video version HERE!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIDmD8NSx7gSTALKERAndrei Tarkovsky 1979https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3hBLv-HLEc | FULL MOVIE | Directed by An... _____________________________________________________FAQ ABOUT THE VIDEO_____________________________________________________1. Is the “Big White Button” actually in Tarkovsky's Stalker? No. It's my own thought experiment — a conceptual device that simplifies and sharpens the moral problem at the heart of Stalker. The Room in the film is ambiguous, mysterious, possibly dangerous. The Big White Button strips away that ambiguity: it gives you exactly what you truly desire, but only if that desire is genuine happiness for all, achieved through everyone's voluntary choices. If that's not your deepest desire… the button won't work._____________________________________________________2. Why do you present the Black Dog as female?Because in this framework, she forms a triad with The Wife and The Child — three figures who remain behind while the men go into the Zone. They embody a kind of grounded, enduring presence that contrasts with the abstract, moral-intellectual struggle of the Zone. There's no indication in the film about the dog's gender, but imagining her as female enriches the symmetry — and opens a symbolic space where the Dog is not just a witness, but a watcher, a remnant, possibly a guide._____________________________________________________3. What's the role of The Black Dog in your interpretation? She is both observer and continuity, left behind (perhaps by the alien Visitors) to see if anyone ever uses The Room — or the Button — wisely. She follows the men in the Zone but doesn't interfere. In the end, she returns with them and appears to settle in The Stalker's household. In my reading, she represents the quiet call to try again. She's the cosmic “maybe.”_____________________________________________________4. Are you saying Tarkovsky was wrong, or incomplete? No — more like: unfinished on purpose. Tarkovsky leaves Stalker unresolved because that's the only honest way to end a film about moral uncertainty. What I'm offering is not a critique, but an imagined continuation — a possible next step that replaces spiritual hope with logical clarity, and then exposes the paradox at the core of that clarity._____________________________________________________5. Is the White Button really possible, logically? It seems so, at first glance. But the contradiction creeps in when you examine the conditions: happiness for all + through voluntary choices. What if some choose differently? What if someone wants suffering or domination? That's where the thought experiment collapses into paradox. As I say in the video: “If you are God, you can make them free or happy — but not both.”_____________________________________________________6. So what's the “correct” answer? Should I press the Button or not? That's the wrong question — and the right one. The thought experiment is designed to reveal the limits of benevolence when paired with freedom. There may be no right answer. Or rather: maybe the only right answer is to try again — knowing full well that trying again is also tragic, and human, and holy.
Elton has no idea what Kraftwerk is. And some music has too many notes in it.
This show, February 27, 1996, is the third to the last for Page/Plant's No Quarter tour, and it is smokin'! The band hasn't lost a step since their legendary Japanese shows of a few days prior. This is an excellent audience recording which maintains the high bar set in Japan, quality-wise. I play a ridiculously hot In The Evening, and the two encores which took the roof off the place. Black Dog and Rock and Roll. The latter two are sung with Robert Plant going alllllll out; hitting notes one doesn't expect. The band are in a great mood and the audience is locked in all the way. A great show with top of their game performances.

Cannock Chase, Staffordshire's infamous former Royal Forest, is steeped in chilling legends and unexplainable phenomena. From supernatural creatures like werewolves, Black Dogs, British Big Cats, and even Bigfoot, to UFO sightings and encounters with demonic entities—this place has it all. In the 1940s, the eerie Pig Man made his debut, and many have claimed to see the terrifying Black-Eyed Girl. The forest is haunted by the cries of children, believed to be the victims of the infamous murderer Raymond Leslie Morris, while the enigmatic Lady of the Chase—tall, slim, and hypnotic—lingers in the shadows, captivating visitors with her dark, haunting gaze. In this spine-chilling episode of the True Hauntings Podcast, Anne & Renata lace up their boots and venture deep into the Chase. Is this truly a portal to another dimension?
