In this episode I sit down with Brother Viknesh, a Missionaries' of God's Love priest in training. I found this conversation to be really interesting as Viknesh grew up in Muttom on the Southern end of India. He was actually caught up in the Boxing Day tsunami of 2004 and was fortunate to survive. We go through his life in India and his journey through faith and even talk about Varma - an Indian form of martial arts that I had to go an do some research on after our discussion. I actually found it has links to Shaolin kung fu and many other styles as well, however that's a topic for another day.

In 2004, a little sci-fi film named Avatar (not *that* one) was produced and released in Singapore — with its roots in cyberpunk and 90s cheese, it remains a rarely-seen oddity in local film. This month, Asian Film Archive is bringing it back to screens as part of State of Motion 2021, focusing on Southeast Asian sci-fi. Listen in to AFA's Viknesh and Kay Wee as they talk about the programme, along with their highlights this month — which includes one of Japan's first all-colour samurai films, and an Iranian treasure remastered to 4K.
