The 2026 MLB All-Star Game is set to take place next month in Philadelphia, and while fan voting ballots have officially dropped, it's time to start thinking about who you might place on the American and National League squads. While there are some obvious names to make the team—looking at you, Shohei Ohtani and Yordan Alvarez—fans will have to make a few difficult decisions about who else will get their vote. On this episode of Baseball Bar-B-Cast, Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman break down both sides of the ballot and give their opinions on who they think should be voted in, including who might be the top vote-getter on the AL side with Aaron Judge set to miss the game. They also try to figure out how many players from the Philadelphia Phillies will represent their club with the game being hosted in the City of Brotherly Love. Later, Jake and Jordan discuss their recent trips to the ballpark, where they saw Paul Skenes take on the Los Angeles Dodgers, as well as his side quest to hang out with some little leaguers, and Gerrit Cole do something he hadn't done since 2022 against the Cleveland Guardians. They then talk about the incredible debut from Chicago White Sox prospect Braden Montgomery and look at the crazy numbers coming out of Sacramento A's and Milwaukee Brewers games in Las Vegas. 1:19 - The Opener: All-Star Game ballots released 4:34 - Who should make the AL squad? 18:25 - Who should make the NL squad? 37:15 - Field Report: Skenes on and off the field 47:35 - Cole against Cleveland 55:03 - Around The League: Montgomery's memorable debut 1:03:58 - Slugfest in Las Vegas Subscribe to Baseball Bar-B-Cast on your favorite podcast app:

What does it really take to open a bookstore, survive a pandemic in your first year, and then expand twice in six years? In this episode of The Localist, Carrie Rollwagen sits down with Kristen Iskandrian, co-owner of Thank You Books in Birmingham's Crestwood neighborhood. Thank You Books opened in December 2019, just months before COVID closed everything down. Six years later, they are expanding for the second time and doubling their footprint. Kristen talks about why retail leases matter more than most people realize, how Thank You Books learned what worked by listening to their customers, and why the book business is one of the hardest small businesses to run. They get into sideline items, signed first edition subscriptions, why bookstore margins are so thin, how to host author events that actually pull a crowd, and what it really means to build community around a store. Carrie spent years in bookselling before The Localist. She was co-founder of Church Street Coffee and Books and managed Jonathan Benton Bookseller. This conversation goes deep into the business, the dream and the reality of running an independent bookstore. As Dolphins minicamp wraps up before the team heads into its summer break, Joe Rose and Dave Hyde discuss what they've learned from watching practices and how much of Miami's starting lineup is already taking shape. While Joe believes many roster battles have become clearer, the guys identify several key question marks that remain unresolved heading into training camp. The conversation expands into the Dolphins' overall roster construction, the open competitions still taking place across the roster, and whether Miami is quietly entering a rebuilding phase despite coaches and players continuing to preach competitiveness. They also touch on the ongoing drama surrounding 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, drawing comparisons to past situations involving Tyreek Hill, while Dave shares concerns about the Dolphins' wide receiver group and defense as the season approaches

If you can grab them in the first five minutes, everything feels easier. That's the magic of a great starter activity — and this episode is Claire's full Q&A on how to do them well.Starter tasks are one of Claire's absolute favourite things (her words). Done right, they communicate your expectations before you've said a single word, shift whatever energy students are walking in with, and create the kind of consistency and predictability that makes your classroom feel safe — for your students and for you.In this episode, Claire covers:Why starter activities are classroom management magic — not just a nice-to-haveThe guard dog analogy — why routines are "friends for the amygdala" and what that means for your most dysregulated studentsThe most frequently asked questions about starter tasks: Do they have to relate to the lesson? Battery calls used to be simple. Now you can roll up on a roadside jump start and find AGM, EFB start stop batteries, spiral wound designs, or even lithium iron phosphate, all tied into smarter charging systems that watch current flow and react to what they think just happened. That's why we brought on Jim O'Hara, EVP of Merchandising at Clore Automotive, to give tow operators a clear, practical playbook for modern battery service calls. We get specific about what matters most in the field: the difference between jump starting and charging. Jim explains why jump starting a 12-volt vehicle is largely chemistry-agnostic, while charging is absolutely not. We talk voltage windows, why lithium batteries are sensitive to overvoltage, and how smart battery chargers with the right profiles help protect battery health and extend service life. If you're choosing a jump starter, booster pack, or charger for a towing and recovery operation, this is the kind of detail that prevents expensive mistakes. We also dig into the real-world connection practices that can keep you safer and keep the vehicle happier. Jim shares why the negative clamp should go to a solid engine or chassis ground, not directly to the negative battery post, not only to reduce spark risk near hydrogen gas but also to avoid confusing modern battery sensors that can trigger codes or drivability issues. From there we cover how to maintain your jump starter investment with “charge early, charge often,” what to watch for in clamps and cables, and the safety habits that matter when you're working around belts, fan blades, and energy-dense lithium packs. To round it out, we talk battery diagnostics for tow pros: why classic load testers can struggle when the battery is discharged, and why digital battery testers are often the best choice for quick, accurate triage of the battery, starting system, and charging system on scene. Subscribe for more towing and recovery training, share this with a coworker, and leave a review with your biggest takeaway.
