July 6th, 2003, was supposed to be a routine Sunday for Joanie Harper. She, along with her three young children, and her mother, attended church that morning, only for that to be the last time the Bakersfield, California community saw them alive. As the five returned home, they were shot and killed in what appeared to be a break-in. However, the truth behind the crime scene was far more sinister. Retired FBI Supervisory Special Agent Mark Safarik discusses how elementary school vice principal Vincent Brothers slaughtered his family and breaks down the unique staging of the crime. Later, he provides insight into the behavioral dynamics of the shocking case. Mark Safarik now serves as the President of Forensic Behavioral Services International, a company that provides expert consultations and services to clients, including criminal and civil litigation, lectures, and training. After his 23 years with the FBI, Mark's unparalleled expertise has been used by various television shows, attorneys, investigators, and law enforcement agencies worldwide. TW/CW: Child death, DV, gross bug stuff, graphic depictions of remainsIn July of 2003, Bakersfield, California investigators were trying to find a killer. A woman, her mother, and her three children were brutally slain and there were very few clues and even less forensic evidence on the scene. There were no witnesses. No forced entry. Detectives hit a brick wall until one of them had the idea to test the insects on the grill and radiator of the suspect's rental car to find out just where he'd been and if he'd been in California at the time of the murders. This had never been done in California before! They would never have been able to do this without the work of Dr. AG Mearns in 1935 who was the first entomologist (insect scientist) to use maggots to find the time of death of two murdered women. Jerry & Amanda discuss the Vincent Brothers case from the early 2000s in California. There are ways to prove a crime that you would never realize!
In this episode, we discuss how forensics played a pivotal role in various cases. In the case of Vincent Brothers, Entomology was the key to figuring out who really killed Vincent's family. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss some interesting aspects of the world of forensics in fighting crime. In the case of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, forensic ecology and botany were used fascinatingly to nail the person who had killed them. On July 6, 2003, just after 1pm, 70 year-old Ernestine Harper was lying in bed taking a nap having just returned home from church. Ernestine was an activist in the local area of Bakersfield California, and had only been lying down a little while when she was awoken by gun shots. Ms. Harper pulled an antique revolver from her nightstand that she had purchased months before, she exited her room and was met in the hallway by a killer with a gun. She was able to pull the trigger six times, but because of the age and condition of the gun, all six were misfires. And Ernestine was gunned down. Two days later the entire community of Bakersfield was alerted that a family of five had been murdered. Ernestine, her daughter Joanie and Joanie's three young children (4,2,6 weeks)were all found dead in their home. Three generations of the Harpers family had just been erased. There has been a conviction in these murders that you will not believe, but now the man originally suspected of killing the family of five is suspected to be innocent. Today we briefly revisit a story we covered in Killafornia Dreaming's first year before we get into today's story. Both cases involve bad husbands with even worse attempts at covering their tracks. Two men who decided murder was a better option than divorce - Vincent Brothers and Earl Morris. Brothers was a bit more elaborate than Morris' attempt at getting away with murder...and Morris...his attempted cover up of his wife's disappearance was almost as bad as his attempted cover up of his male pattern balding. After Vincent Brothers' wife, children and mother-in-law are murdered on a weekend when he was out of town, his Bakersfield, California community is shocked to learn he is a suspect. Keith Morrison reports in this Dateline classic that originally aired on NBC on July 24, 2009.
Wanda Lopez was a little freaked out. She was working the evening shift, alone, at a gas station in a rough part of town, and a sketchy dude was outside the store with a knife. She called the police, but they brushed off her concerns. The guy hadn't done anything! He wasn't even inside the store! But the man's presence set off Wanda's alarm bells. So she called 911 again. The dispatcher didn't like Wanda's tone (!!) but sent officers to the scene when he overheard the man attack her. It was too late. Wanda didn't make it, but at least there were eyewitnesses who could tell the police who'd done it. The murderer was a thin, 5'9” Hispanic man with curly, ear-length hair. He was wearing a flannel jacket. Or was it a white button up? Tomayto, tomahto! After a 45-minute manhunt, they arrested Carlos DeLuna. Carlos claimed he was innocent. He'd seen another man commit the crime – a man who was also named Carlos. Carlos Hernandez. But Carlos DeLuna was full of shit. Right? Then Brandi keeps the bummers coming with another family annihilator. On a weekend in July of 2003, Joanie Harper, her children Marques, Lyndsey, baby Marshall and mother Earnestine Harper were all murdered in their home. The killer made a lame attempt at staging a break-in, but because they'd seen Dateline, investigators immediately turned their suspicion on Joanie's husband, Vincent Brothers. But Vincent had been out of town during the murders, and he had the receipts to prove it. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: “The Phantom” documentary “The Wrong Carlos: Anatomy of a Wrongful Execution,” by James S. LIebman and the Columbia DeLuna Project “The wrong Carlos: How Texas sent an innocent man to his death,” by Ed Pilkington for The Guardian “Carlos DeLuna” entry on Wikipedia “Yes, America, we have executed an innocent man,” by Andrew Cohen for The Atlantic In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “The Harper Family” episode Family Massacre “The Mystery of the Lost Weekend” episode Dateline “'That's A Lot Of Hate': Dead Insects Lead Detectives To Man Who Killed 5 Family Members” by Joe Dziemianowicz, oxygen.com “DEFINING CASES: Bugs and sex: Vincent Brothers' 2007 multiple-murder conviction came down to insect parts and his smugness on the stand” by Jessica Logan, The Bakersfield Californian “Brothers attorneys blame woman for murders” by Jessica Logan, The Bakersfield Californian “Vincent E. Who would target this family? Was this a robbery gone wrong or something more personal? Listen to the story of how a killer was brought to justice due to what the bug evidence told investigators.
Vincent Brothers seemed to be a decent man in the public's eyes. He was a vice principal at an elementary school and the kids at school looked up to him. But behind the scenes he was a terrible husband. He turned out to be an even worse father. With a solid alibi and claiming to be thousands of miles away....He would never be convicted of a horrible crime. But superheroes don't always wear capes... sometimes they wear lab coats... In 2003 the bodies of a woman, her three children, and her mother were found dead in a house in Bakersfield California. Police used extraordinary forensics, including insects embedded in a rental car, to convict the woman’s husband Vincent Brothers of the murders. In August, 1974, a massive flood hit Queanbeyan in New South Wales, and locals claimed that bodies from the local cemetery were washed down the river and into Lake Burley Griffin in the heart of Canberra.
With only tiny insect fragments from the radiator in Vincent Brothers' car, bug experts can prove his alibi is a lie.
