In Today's episode, I dive into the mysterious 1987 disappearance of 16-year-old Theresa Bier in the remote Sierra Nevada mountains near Fresno, California. Accompanied by 43-year-old Russell Welch, a self-proclaimed Bigfoot hunter, Theresa vanished without a trace during an expedition in the wilderness. Welch was later arrested but never charged due to lack of evidence. What happened deep in those woods? Join me as I explore the strange circumstances, disturbing theories, and unanswered questions surrounding the Theresa Bier case—a mystery that still baffles investigators today.Anyone with information about Theresa's disappearance is encouraged to call the Fresno Police Department at (559) 621-2541 The case number to reference is 8736264Connect with us on Social Media! You can find us at:Instagram: @bookofthedeadpodX: @bkofthedeadpodFacebook: The Book of the Dead PodcastTikTok: BookofthedeadpodOr visit our website at www.botdpod.com217DFCA - Theresa Ann Bier. A massive interstate search was launched to find Marion's killer and within a few days, police arrested nineteen-year-old William Edward Hickman, a former co-worker of Perry Parker. During his interrogation, Hickman confessed to kidnapping and murdering Marion, claiming that a god he referred to as “Providence” had instructed him to do it. That confession prompted Hickman's attorneys to take advantage of the state's new law accepting a legal defense of not guilty by reason of insanity; however, a jury disagreed, and Hickman was found guilty and executed at San Quentin Prison the following year.Because of the shocking cruelty and brutality of the murder, the well documented and exciting search for the killer, and the sensational nature of the defense, the story of Marion Parker's murder and the trial that followed dominated the media and occupied several pages of all the major papers across the state for months. For these reasons and more, it remains one of the most notorious murders in California history.ReferencesAssociated Press. 1928. "Hickman to have new judge." Fresno Bee, January 25: 1.—. 1927. On the afternoon of December 15, 1927, twelve-year-old Marion Parker was checked out of her Los Angeles junior high school by a man claiming to be an employee of her father, Perry Parker, an employee at a bank in the city. The man claimed Parker had been in an accident and he was to bring the girl to see her father, but this was just a ruse to abduct the girl. The following day, Marion's parents received several cryptic ransom letters demanding $1,500 in gold in exchange for the safe return of their daughter. On December 17, Perry Parker delivered the money to the kidnapper, who took the money, then dumped Marion's dead, mutilated body out of the car before speeding away.ReferencesAssociated Press. 1928. In an intense and varied conversation Stephanie takes Vayse through her near death experience, complete with a fall through the starlit sky, disembodied consciousnesses and sky-scraper sized entities, she talks about how to start off your own run of synchronicities and the conversation weaves itself around Carlos Castaneda, Gurdjieff, how to not lose yourself in your spiritual practice or join a cult... and, speaking of cults, enter the glowing orange 16-bit pineapple... Today we discuss a couple of homelessness bills state Republicans are pushing forward, such as Roseville's Josh Hoover's push to make it illegal for just about anyone to sleep just about anywhere in a city or town in California.    We also take a moment for Robin Swanson, a conservative Democratic operative from East Sacramento who is quoted in the above story, and who appears to be pushing for some truly fascist policies against our unhoused neighbors.   We highly recommend a scroll through her tweets the last couple days: https://twitter.com/robin_swanson/with_replies   Is Robin really a concerned mother, or is she running a public campaign to rally folks for a challenger against Sacramento's current District 4 incumbent? One cannot trust these operatives.   Finally, we host a reading series on a baffling Fresno Bee editorial that tell us nothing and everything all at once.   Thanks for listening, defund the police and, as always: Twitter: @youknowkempa, @ShanNDSTevens, @Flojaune, @guillotine4you Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/voicesrivercity   Sacramentans can hear us on 103.1 KUTZ Thursdays at 6 pm and again Fridays at 8 am. Abductions in the 1970s are characterized by cases that gained a level of popularity on their individual merits. The Pascagoula Abduction for instance was a media sensation that occurred during a very prominent UFO/humanoid flap. It's also the first year that a handful of abduction cases were reported. Interestingly, they all occurred within 10 days of each other. In 1974, The Carl Higdon abduction captured the attention of national headlines, and one year later, the Travis Walton case captured widespread press attention, primarily because it was a missing person's/murder case before it became an alien abduction. In 1975, 25 abduction cases were reported, setting a new record for the most reported in a year. Aside from the publicity of the Walton case, it's believed that the premiere of The UFO Incident, starring James Earl Jones and Estelle Parsons, depicting the abduction of Betty Barney brought forth many experiencers, including Patty Roach, who experienced an abduction with her family in 1973. The abduction experiences of Brian Scott became known due to the film's release as well. Other abduction cases would come to the forefront in the 70s, such as the cases of Lee Parish, and the Stanford Three. All of these cases that I have mentioned we have covered on the podcast before, so it only makes sense to bring the most obscure cases to the table. Researcher Cole Herrold (New World Explorers Society) joins me discuss some of the strangest cases you've never heard before. This is a true story that begins in 1931 and is still developing as we live and breathe. You will learn about a woman who served God and died too early. Her service and devotion to God and St. Joseph was almost eclipsed by her friend Father John J. Crowley, also known as the Padre of the Desert, a larger-than-life servant of the Catholic Church. Their stories are forever intertwined and with the help of special guest, Molly Hudson, we will share what happened to us after I mentioned Sister Irenita in Curious Cat Episode 14: Cemeteries. Woo. It's a doozy. If you'd like to research their lives and fill in the gaps for yourself about what may have kept Sister Irenita discontent, haunting the St. Johns Cathedral and property for 91 years, please have a read. This episode was recorded and is shared with the sole hope of wishing eternal peace and love to Sister Irenita Zimmerman and Father John J. Crowley. Fresno is launching a pilot program to help protect street vendors from harassment and assault. Councilmembers and community organizations there are teaming up to install cameras on street vendors' carts and provide them with small business resources. The effort comes a year after the death of Lorenzo Perez, a street vendor who was murdered in April, 2021 while selling corn. We talk with journalist Melissa Montalvo, who reported on the story for the Fresno Bee and Fresno councilmember Luis Chavez, one of the initiative's leaders.
