In midlife sex is not over! Sexual health expert, Dr Lyndsey Harper joins me in this episode. The questions that are top of mind even if not tip of tongue are what we're tackling today.  Here's how I know. In opening applications for the Flipping 50 TV shows the questions about libido were so prevalent that I gave in and episode 3 was about how to modify exercise to help, or at the least not sabotage your libido.  We have a little library of episodes for you if sexual health questions are top of mind for you too and we'll link to those in the show notes.  My Guest:   Dr. Lyndsey Harper is a Board Certified Ob/Gyn, Associate Professor of Ob/Gyn for Texas A&M COM, a Fellow of The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and a Fellow of the International Society for the Study of Women's Sexual Health. Dr. Harper is the founder and CEO of Rosy, a women's health technology company that connects women who have sexual health concerns with hope, community, and research-backed solutions. She has been named Forbes Top 53 Women Disrupting Healthcare, People Newspapers' 20 Under 40, a Top Innovator in North Texas for 2020 and a DBJ Top Woman in Tech. Questions We Answer in This Episode: If you lose your libido during menopause is it gone for good? Even with HRT? What treatments are there for vaginal atrophy post menopause? Meno has kinda made the Big O a small o. How can I fix that? The Big O was always toe-curling and several minutes of luscious spasms and an hour of ooey gooey oxytocin, but now not so much. Is there a natural alternative to Estradiol vaginal cream used to help prevent UTI's? Can regular use of antihistamine (h1, Claritin &h2, Pepcid) affect libido & cause fatigue? Taking for MCAS currently. What can I do for painful intercourse? Tried KY jelly and the like but the pain is excruciating. How to prevent UTI's (beyond the basics)? I have started using D-Manose, a women's probiotic which seems to help but wondering if there are any other suggestions. Any recommendations for keeping things fulfilling if spouse has ED? Can estradiol vaginal cream or estrogen HRT cause bleeding for those with fibroids and a thin endometrial membrane?  Libido. Even though I'm on HRT it's virtually non-existent. Difficult when your partner's libido stays healthy. What can I do about this? What are the best exercises for tightening up the pelvic floor muscles please? The info out there can seem confusing as to which exercises actually work the best. Do the toning balls that are inserted? What is more effective than basic kegels? Today we talk to a doctor about sexual health and libido. It's the conversation you always wished you had with your doctor, but maybe too shy to have. But Dr. Lyndsey Harper isn't any kind of doctor. She is an Ob/Gyn (that means she is a doctor of obstetrics and gynecology…delivering babies and seeing a lot of female patients talking about their reproductive health). But she is a doctor with a passion for educating women about sex, desire and sexual health. She was so frustrated as a doctor when she couldn't find a modern and accessible resource to help her patients with problems of low libido and other sex issues, that she decided to create something herself. And that's an app called ROSY, which connects 84 million women in the US with sexual problems with hope, community, and research-backed solutions to improve their lives. So, we are going to first talk about the issues of low desire and then the solutions. For the last 7 years Dr. Harper has been in private practice in Dallas, Texas and is also a hospitalist, meaning she sees patients in hospitals too. But she doesn't stop there. Dr. Harper is an Associate Professor of Ob/Gyn for Texas A&M College of Medicine, a Fellow of The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and a Fellow of the International Society for the Study of Women's Sexual Health. So, I think she is someone pretty well qualified to talk about women's health, don't you think? The disproportionate research in men and women's sexual health is astounding, resulting in a lack of education on these issues during medical training. If we have a problem, turning to Google or WebMD might be the only way to get answers — but we all know that only ends in more anxiety and confusion about our bodies. On this episode of Checkable Health Podcast, Dr. Lyndsey Harper and Patty Post of Checkable Health talk about this disparity between men and women's sexual health information. You'll also hear why opening up these conversations on emotional well-being, pleasure, menstruation and more will create healthy, empowered young girls and women. As an Ob/Gyn, Dr. Lyndsey Harper noticed a pattern of concerns among her patients, including pain after sex, vaginal dryness, and low sex drive. And it wasn't just her patients either: 43% of women have a sexual health concern. Since she received zero education on these issues and wasn't equipped to address them, she decided to come up with a way to help.Created by Dr. Lyndsey, the Rosy app creates a personalized wellness plan for women of all ages and sexual preferences. From classic therapies like CBT, to surprising evidence-based treatments like erotica, Rosy uses a holistic model to combine medical, mental and social approaches to treatment.Tune for an important discussion why we need to bring more awareness to women's sexual health issues, and how to make the subject less taboo in the doctor's office and at home!Topics discussed in this episode:Dr. Lyndsey Harper's background as an Ob/GynCommon sexual health concerns of her patientsThe lack of education and research into women's sexual healthCognitive behavioral therapy as a treatmentWays Rosy offers members help in the appUsing CBT to shift negative body imageHow Rosy personalizes a wellness plan for each userErotica as an evidence-based interventionMaking sex and sexual health problems less tabooHow and when do you talk to your children about pleasure? Will Dr. Lyndsey Harper recommend a pad, tampon, or menstrual cup to her daughters?Learn more about Rosy and Dr. Lyndsey Harper here, and be sure to download the Rosy app!Check out our other podcasts selection for valuable info on health, wellness, and more. Code: AFTERBC Good for a FREE 1-Month Silver Membership to the Rosy App  Link: https://bit.ly/3KV61dt   Dr. Lyndsey Harper, OB/GYN, joins us to discuss SOLUTIONS to lack of libido—and gives us HOPE! Libido is a pretty complex topic, and Dr. Lyndsey recognizes that the majority of us were not warned that breast cancer treatment would impact our libido and our intimate lives. Common causes of lack of libido— Change in hormone status could be caused by the addition of a hormone blocker, surgically induced menopause, and more. You might have a change in the way you view yourself sexually. Low sexual desire affects us as women and how we see ourselves. The relationship component could be impacted. Your partner may view you differently from a sexual perspective. Libido can be impacted by a variety of emotional components including stress Quick numbers 39% of ALL women report a lack of libido 20% of ALL women report difficulty with orgasm 85% of women have orgasm through clitoral stimulation, not penetrative intercourse The breast cancer community seems to be impacted at a higher level. Spontaneous desire (being horny) vs. responsive desire (whatever turns you on)—Some women have neither.   Dr. Harper indicates “the best side effect-free solution is erotica.” There is evidence-based research showing erotic can increase desire.   10% of women have no desire, even if they have the best partner, no stress, etc. They may be suffering from HSDD (hypoactive sexual desire disorder).   There are two prescription medications to consider for low libido. Addyi – Take nightly prior to bed. Number one side effect is sleepiness. About have the women who use it have increases in desire. An 8-week trial is usually suggested. Vyleesi – Given by auto injection not more than 2x per week. Decreases inhibition. Works in 60% of women. An 8-week trial is usually suggested. A medication review can be important. Different medications can have negative sexual effects.   “Scream cream” by your provider's prescription is recommended for help with arousal and orgasm. There aren't a lot of randomized control trials for its use.   Use vaginal moisturizing (hyaluronic acid, vaginal estrogen therapy) for discomfort, painful intercourse.   Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM) is a progressive condition, so it's prudent to be proactive with vaginal health. It won't get better without your action.   Pelvic floor therapy is HIGHLY recommended for women with breast cancer! This type of therapy helps with issues concerning your bladder, bowel, balance, or painful intercourse. Pelvic floor muscles could be too tight or not strong enough, and only an exam by a pelvic floor therapist can let you know what needs to happen for you to have a happy and healthy pelvic floor.   If you have mismatched libido with your partner— Consider erotica as a prescription. Make a date for intimacy. The lower desire partner should take the lead on initiating intimacy. Use of sex toys will help provide more blood flow to your vulvar region. Perhaps you've gone through medically induced menopause unexpectedly and are no longer sure of how to navigate your intimate life. Were your breasts important for your arousal or orgasm? Has your libido has disappeared without notice? Are you having painful intercourse and don't understand how to fix it? (HINT: It might NOT be about lube!) You need to know you're not alone! In 2017, I couldn't understand why I hadn't been "warned" about the intimacy issues I would face after a breast cancer diagnosis, but I knew there MUST be answers! Because of the personal issues I faced in my intimate life, I started the private Facebook support group, Sex After Breast Cancer. Since that time, I've developed a Contributing Expert Team to provide us with the information we need. Thousands of women have been helped through our beautiful support group.  Recently I had a very frank discussion about sexual health with one of our Contributing Experts, Dr. Lyndsey Harper, OB/GYN. Dr. Harper is the founder and CEO of Rosy, an award-winning women's health technology company that connects women who have sexual health concerns with hope, community, and research-backed solutions. Our conversation covered a wide range of issues from lack of libido to painful sex to the use of vaginal estrogen and much more. I think you'll enjoy our discussion. After listening, I want to encourage you to download the Rosy - Sexual Health for Women app on your mobile device. We are grateful that Dr. Harper has provided our Hope After Breast Cancer community with a special offer. Use the promo code HOPE at meetrosy.com/promo to redeem a 1-Month Subscription to the Rosy Silver Membership! The offer is only good for new subscribers and is only available in the US and Canada. THANK YOU, Rosy!   Shared with love by Jan James, Hope After Breast Cancer Find out more about our private Facebook support groups (Booby Buddies, Hope After Breast Cancer, Sex After Breast Cancer, Booby Buddies en español) here. This episode is brought to you by Yotpo.   Getting women's health out from under the radar - that's one of the missions of Rosy Wellness, an app offering women a holistic approach to sexual health and wellness, says Dr. Lyndsey Harper, the brand's Founder and CEO.   "The fact of the matter is, for the most part, medicine has been led by men in the past," Lyndsey says. "Women as physicians and health care consumers are standing up and saying, ‘ this whole experience was not designed for me. I have vast medical health needs that are not being met.' And how do we start to look at those when it comes to women's sexual health specifically?"   Lyndsey's path to Rosy began after college during her medical residency when she learned what OB-GYNs did and continued into private practice, where she and her patients developed strong bonds that evolved into conversations about sexual health.   "I wasn't even asking my patients about their sexual health because I didn't have any resources," she says. "Even if they had said, yes, I have a sexual health problem, I didn't know what to do with that. That wasn't part of my training."   The worst part is the unnecessary shame and isolation the patients were feeling, Lyndsey says. About 43 percent of women have a sexual problem, but nobody was talking about it.   The answer, Lyndsey felt, was to create a platform that could educate women and get them in contact with the necessary resources - as soon as possible.   "It's been so exciting to watch that all unfold, but I'm still as mad today as I was when I started, so there's still a lot of work to be done," she says.   The topic continues to have a taboo feel to it, she says.   "One thing that I think that we've been able to do successfully - and I hope to do really at scale for the world - is to position women's sexual health as not seedy as not some dark part of the Internet where you're going to be erasing your Google search," she says. Women's sexual health should be part of women's health - just as it is for men.   "We can talk about it as physicians, we can get it covered by insurers, we can advertise effectively on all the platforms that we need to advertise on, and we can get physicians trained," she says. "I think it takes a lot of that shame and lack of certainty away from the conversation and can position it in a more weighty, meaningful, and legitimate light."   In Part 1, Lyndsey talks about:   * Gratitude to her former partners at a medical practice who gave her encouragement and support when she left to form her brand. * Why medical research has traditionally revolved around male participants. * Women's growing role in addressing modern health problems. * Her path to women's sexual health as a space. * The need to get help, information, and resources to women ASAP. * The struggle to remove stigmas from the women's sexual health space.   Join Ramon Vela and Dr. Lyndsey Harper as they break down the inside story on The Story of a Brand.   For more on Rosy Wellness, visit: https://meetrosy.com/    Subscribe and Listen to the podcast on all major apps. This episode is brought to you by Yotpo.   The Rosy Wellness app is a "safe space" that can create a personalized journey for each woman on her sexual health path, says Dr. Lyndsey Harper, the brand's Founder and CEO.   "We have a library of personalized and curated content waiting for you," Lyndsey says. "If you are suffering from infertility, if you're pregnant, if you're a postpartum menopausal in the middle of life like I am, you're taking care of your kids, your professional life, and your long-term relationships. We create a personalized sexual health journey for each of our users, and sexual health, the way we define it, is not a problem to be solved. We bring all those resources together in one safe space, one convenient platform so that women can access whatever resource they need during their specific life, moment or journey."   The most frequent users of Rosy are women in the late 30s or early 40s when sex has fallen to the wayside, Lyndsey says.   "They might come to their physician describing low sexual desire, which is the No. 1 complaint of women when it comes to sexual health - 38 percent of women say that they have low sexual desire," she says. "We have resources from sex therapists that have created a bunch of resources for us to help women reprioritize sex and desire."   Putting these resources on a smartphone app is a significant component of Rosy's mission - to meet women where they are. The app is free to download. Users are welcomed and then are invited to take a 27-question quiz to help build their journey inside the platform. Access to experts, doctors, and therapists is available, as well as a library of erotica - an evidence-based tool for sexual dysfunction, Lyndsey says. Individual coaching also is available.   Lyndsey offers some words of wisdom to would-be entrepreneurs considering a new venture: Have the big picture in mind. Write it down. Repeat it. Also, don't let the big work ahead intimidate you on a daily basis.   "Just move on past it and keep going," she says.   In Part 2, Lyndsey talks about:   * The ideal consumer for the Rosy app. * The resources available via the app. * The No. 1 issue users say they face. * How the app works. * What the user experience is like. * Advice to fellow entrepreneurs.   Join Ramon Vela and Dr. Lyndsey Harper as they break down the inside story on The Story of a Brand.   For more on Rosy Wellness, visit: https://meetrosy.com/    Subscribe and Listen to the podcast on all major apps. This episode of the Busine$$ of the V is focused on a digital health platform that is drawing raves from women wrestling with low libido and sexual dysfunction. Dr. Dweck and Rachel are hearing from Dr. Lyndsey Harper, an entrepreneur to watch in the sexual health space. She is the CEO and Founder of Rosy, a unique platform that blends education, coaching and a supportive community for women to better understand – and revel in – their sexuality.   As Dr. Dweck likes to say, “Sexual health is general health,” which is why the subscription-based Rosy business model's positive outcomes resonate far beyond individuals. Being able to direct patients to Rosy is huge for busy OB-GY's who simply don't have time – or sufficient training – enough to provide the detailed information their patients want and deserve. The Rosy application connects women with a wealth of educational resources, trained experts and even a library of erotica with a choice among three levels of spice, as in heat!   Drs. Harper and Dweck recall their days in residency, where information about erectile dysfunction and other male-oriented sexual issues were part of training rotations. By contrast, as Dr. Dweck puts it, when it comes to women's sexual health and well-being their training amounted to “a big fat zero!” Enjoy this lively conversation with Dr. Harper, an innovator to watch in the women's health space. Rosy is a digital community unlike anything out there – and women learning from and meeting each other on the platform are thrilled!   You can subscribe or listen to previous episodes of the Busine$$ of the V podcast by clicking here.

One of the most common relationship problems that drives couples to therapy is a sexual desire discrepancy, where one partner wants more sex than the other. In fact, about 1 in 4 people report having experienced this in the past year alone. This can be a longstanding pattern or issue in a relationship, but it can also emerge when one partner loses desire over time. So how do you deal with this situation effectively? In this episode of the podcast, I spoke with Dr. Lyndsey Harper, an Ob/Gyn at the Texas A&M College of Medicine and founder of the new mobile app Rosy. Dr. Harper developed Rosy as a tool to help women who are dealing with low sexual desire and desire discrepancies. Low sexual desire is the single most common sexual difficulty reported by women, with about 1 in 3 women reporting it in the last year. Low sexual desire is less common among men, but still prevalent: specifically, it's reported by about 1 in 7 men in the past year. We cover a lot of ground in this episode, including: What are the factors that influence sexual desire, and how are they similar or different for men and women? Why are desire discrepancies so common in long-term relationships? What is the role of medication in treating low sexual desire? Can pharmaceuticals help to fix a loss of desire? How can technology (including mobile apps like Rosy and telehealth services) help people deal with desire problems? We also talk about some of the most common myths and misconceptions people believe about sex and sexual desire. To learn more about Dr. Harper, see here.
