This week, in Chugiak, Alaska, a senseless murder is quickly solved, when one of the participants goes to police, and spills all the details. The problem is, this only leads to more murder, when the killers seek revenge on the one who squealed. An elaborate plan is hatched, among a family of criminals, leading to a huge explosion, and the wrong people being killed. Luckily, someone in the conspiracy had a conscience, and unravels the whole thing!!Along the way, we find out that in Alaska, you are just as likely to be eaten by a bear, as you are to be killed in any other way, that families who kill together, don't necessarily stay together, and that pregnant ladies named "Peggy" probably shouldn't participate in murders!!New episodes every Thursday & Friday!Donate at: patreon.com/crimeinsports or go to paypal.com and use our email: crimeinsports@gmail.comGo to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things Small Town Murder & Crime In Sports!Follow us on...twitter.com/@murdersmallfacebook.com/smalltownpodinstagram.com/smalltownmurderAlso, check out James & Jimmie's other show, Crime In Sports! When a loving mother and dedicated nurse's body is found nude on the side of the road, several suspects end up on law enforcement's radar. It would take years and the determination of the victim's family to unspool the secrets (and secret lives) of those involved to finally unmask the killer. Sources: 1. In recent years, cold cases that were solved through advances in science have been the main focus of popular documentary television shows such as Forensic Files and The New Detectives. These shows highlight the unwavering precision of DNA evidence, often a stark contrast to the shaky, unreliable accounts of human witnesses. Science, after all, doesn't forget or misremember. But for every case where DNA delivers justice, there are many where crafty criminals find ways to outmaneuver it.Some killers wear gloves, wiping away fingerprints before they can betray them. Others destroy bodies to erase the telltale signs of their crimes, or move them far from the scene, creating a labyrinth for investigators to untangle. And sometimes, they don't even need to be smart—luck, decay, or the chaos of time does the dirty work, erasing evidence before anyone can even begin to collect it.When physical evidence fails, investigators must often turn to a far older, messier source of truth: the people! But people lie. They forget. They're afraid. And sometimes, misplaced loyalty can make them guard the secrets of the guilty.Yet, in the most unexpected of cases, time itself becomes an investigator. Circumstances shift. Consciences crack. And voices that were once silent—or deemed unreliable—suddenly rise to solve the unsolvable. That's exactly what happened in the 1993 murder of Rayna Rison. You're listening to True Crime Stories for No Sleep. If you're new here, welcome! Send us a Text Message. In this episode, I speak with McCracken Poston Jr. on the topic of "Zenith Man", a story of death, love and redemption in a Georgia courtroom.★ McCracken's Bio: ★ McCracken King Poston, Jr. was born and raised in Catoosa County in Northwest Georgia. A four-term member of the Georgia House of Representatives, his world unraveled after a number of personal and professional setbacks, including a losing bid for the U.S. Congress.Soon, Poston found himself representing a most unusual client - a man once revered as a natural TV repairman who had also suffered several downfalls, including being accused of holding his wife captive in their basement for almost three decades before killing her. Poston went on to complete the representation of Alvin "Zenith Man" Ridley, and the community was shocked to hear the truth of what went on at the dilapidated house in Ringgold, Georgia.Only recently, Alvin Ridley was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, which explains much about how throughout his life he was misunderstood by his community.Poston's first book is a story of redemption, of more than one man in Catoosa County, Georgia.Poston went on from this case to a distinguished career as a criminal defense lawyer, with cases featured on television's "Forensic Files," A&E's "American Justice," and several national publications. He and his secretary continue to help Mr. Ridley, now eighty-one, making and getting him to appointments, and helping him navigate a neurotypical world.Connect with McCracken:https://www.mccrackenpostonjr.com/https://twitter.com/realzenithmanhttps://www.instagram.com/mccrackenpostonjr/https://www.facebook.com/McCrackenPostonJr/

On the evening of May 22, 1992, Betty Wilson returned home from an AA meeting to find her husband, Dr. Jack Wilson, had been beaten and stabbed to death in what she assumed was a burglary gone wrong. Betty ran to a neighbor's house to call 911, and police arrived at the Wilson's house a short time later to secure the scene. At first, investigators agreed with Betty's theory that Jack had surprised a burglar and was then killed. The problem, however, was that nothing appeared to have been taken, nor did it appear that the house had been ransacked. A few days later, a tip led detectives to James White, who quickly confessed that he murdered Jack Wilson at the request of Betty and her twin sister, Peggy Lowe, with whom he was in love. Betty Wilson and her sister, Peggy, were both arrested and went on to be tried for capital murder, while James White accepted a plea deal in exchange for testifying against both women. After a brief trial, a jury found Betty guilty, and she was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Peggy Lowe, on the other hand, was tried for the same crime, but just a few months after her sister's verdict was read, Peggy was found not guilty. How was it both women could face the same charges, under the same circumstances, and be tried with the same evidence, but receive opposite outcomes? Its horrific origin story(s) makes it a hotbed for evil spirits and lost souls. We suggest listening to this portion at a lower volume because Kenzie will be squealing, screaming, and shouting while Lauren tells her story. Next, Kenzie talks about the complicated case of 24 year old Scott Dunn. Investigators are not sure they will get a conviction without a body, but that won't stop them from trying! When thirty-eight-year-old Steven Robards died unexpectedly in the winter of 1993, everyone including the coroner believed his death to have been the result of a heart attack—unusual for someone so young, but certainly not unheard of. It wasn't until the following year, when Steven's teenage daughter, Marie, was practicing for the school play, that the girl confessed the truth to her friend: Steven Robards didn't die from a heart attack, he was murdered by his daughter with chemicals she'd stolen from the high school chemistry lab.In the United States, it's exceedingly rare for a child to kill a parent, and rarer still for that child to be female. The truth about Steven Robards murder shocked the residents of the Fort Worth area and divided the community between those who were sympathetic to her claims of desperation and those who saw her as nothing more than a craven predator who'd do anything to get what she wanted. Indeed, Marie claimed she had only wanted to make her father sick so she could return to living with her mother, from whom she'd been separated since her parents' divorce, and she had never wanted to kill him.Ultimately a jury didn't buy Marie's story and sentenced her to twenty-seven years in prison, of which she served only seven years before being paroled. Was Marie Robards really just a confused teenager who acted impulsive without regard for the consequences of her actions? Or was she really the calculating self-serving killer some believed her to be?Thank you to David White, of the Bring Me the Axe podcast, for research assistance!ReferencesBlaney, Betsy. 1997. Was it an accident, a suicide, or a murder? That is the theme of this week's episode, and you'd be surprised how often that question is asked.First, Anna shares some information about accidents and why they might fly under the radar as unexplained deaths, and Benton tells the tale of the mysterious death of Gareth Williams. Then, Anna relays the tragic tale of the puzzling death of Laura Letts-Beckett. Finally, the two discuss a classic episode of Forensic Files, profiling the death of Janice Johnson. Our TV doc this week is Season 4: Episode 9 of Forensic Files, "Accident or Murder?"
Zenith Man: Death, Love, and Redemption in a Georgia Courtroom by McCracken Poston Jr. https://amzn.to/49OrmAE Like a nonfiction John Grisham thriller with echoes of Rainman, Just Mercy, and a captivating smalltown Southern setting, this is the fascinating true story—sometimes humorous, sometimes heartbreaking—of an idealistic young lawyer determined to free an innocent neurodivergent man accused of murdering the wife no one knew he had. An inspiring argument for compassion in the pursuit of true justice for readers of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and Just Mercy. Was this small-town TV repair man “a harmless eccentric or a bizarre killer” (Atlanta Journal Constitution). For the first time, Alvin Ridley's own defense attorney reveals the inside story of his case and trial in an extraordinary tale of friendship and an idealistic young attorney's quest to clear his client's name—and, in the process, rebuild his own life. In October 1997, the town of Ringgold in northwest Georgia was shaken by reports of a murder in its midst. A dead woman was found in Alvin Ridley's house—and even more shockingly, she was the wife no one knew he had. McCracken Poston had been a state representative before he lost his bid for U.S. Congress and returned to his law career. Alvin Ridley was a local character who once sold and serviced Zenith televisions. Though reclusive and an outsider, the “Zenith Man,” as Poston knew him, hardly seemed capable of murder. Alvin was a difficult client, storing evidence in a cockroach-infested suitcase, unwilling to reveal key facts to his defender. Gradually, Poston pieced together the full story behind Virginia and Alvin's curious marriage and her cause of death—which was completely overlooked by law enforcement. Calling on medical experts, testimony from Alvin himself, and a wealth of surprising evidence gleaned from Alvin's junk-strewn house, Poston presented a groundbreaking defense that allowed Alvin to return to his peculiar lifestyle, a free man. Years after his trial, Alvin was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, a revelation that sheds light on much of his lifelong personal battle—and shows how easily those who don't fit societal norms can be castigated and misunderstood. Part true crime, part courtroom drama, and full of local color, Zenith Man is also the moving story of an unexpected friendship between two very different men that changed—and perhaps saved—the lives of both. About the author McCracken King Poston, Jr. was born and raised in Catoosa County in Northwest Georgia. A four-term member of the Georgia House of Representatives, his world unraveled after a number of personal and professional setbacks, including a losing bid for the U.S. Congress. Soon, Poston found himself representing a most unusual client - a man once revered as a natural TV repairman who had also suffered several downfalls, including being accused of holding his wife captive in their basement for almost three decades before killing her. Poston went on to complete the representation of Alvin "Zenith Man" Ridley, and the community was shocked to hear the truth of what went on at the dilapidated house in Ringgold, Georgia. Only recently, Alvin Ridley was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, which explains much about how throughout his life he was misunderstood by his community. Poston's first book is a story of redemption, of more than one man in Catoosa County, Georgia. Poston went on from this case to a distinguished career as a criminal defense lawyer, with cases featured on television's "Forensic Files," A&E's "American Justice," and several national publications. He and his secretary continue to help Mr. Ridley, now eighty-one, making and getting him to appointments, and helping him navigate a neurotypical world.
