Greetings Rainbow Warriors and beinvenue from France. I had hoped to get this episode out while I was still in California, but I was forced to surrender to the fact that between technical issues with computers and some files, in addition to my heavy schedule of moving out of my place in LA and teaching while in California , it simply wasn’t possible. I taught a community healing event in my beloved Ojai to help with healing after the fires, and I presented my “Yoga Starts in the Kitchen” workshop at the Lightning in a  Bottle Festival. That was my 4th year in a row at the Learning Kitchen and it’s always a joy to present at this event. Stay tuned for pics and a youtube video of that presentation coming up soon, and listen to my interview with Cristina Urioste , the curator fo that stage to learn more about that event. So I’ve done it now. I took the leap to leave my Los Angeles home of twenty years behind, donate all my stuff to my friends who lost their homes in the Ojai fires, I sold my car, and I’m now on yomad status. That’s right, I’m a yoga nomad sharing yoga all over the world, and I couldn’t be happier about it. This last year traveling the world showed me that this is exactly what I want to be doing at this point in my life. I’m taking the action steps to literally lighten my load and invest in experiences over things. In September I’ll be presenting at the DNX Global festival in Lisbon which is the place to be if you’re interested in moving toward the digital nomad lifestyle. Stay tuned to my facebook page for announcements and discounts to that event.   So now I’m in the Auvergne region in France, in the middle of a 6000 acre forest that rest inside a volcano, seriously guys.  I’m here offering a Wilderness Wellness experience and you’re invited! I’ll be here teaching yoga for a  couple more weeks and you can drop in any time to participate. We’re in a stunning 300 year old eco lodge in front of a lake with views of animals and rolling hills. It’s the most quiet peaceful place I can ever remember being. It’s truly magical. You can come for just a few nights or as long as you want, so if you’re in Europe or looking for an excuse to travel, please, come and join us. You can find the details on my “Visionary Yoga and Podcast” facebook page and I’ll post a link in the show notes as well. So now, on to today’s show.   Allison Melody, is a co-host of The Food Heals Podcast along with Suzy Hardy, and is the owner of Melody Productions. She is an eco–entrepreneur with a passion for film, fitness and food. Through her podcast, she brings together experts in nutrition and healing to teach listeners the best-kept natural secrets to health and happiness. For the past eleven years, Allison has also directed, produced and edited documentary films, PSA’s, commercials and viral videos for clients on the topics of social justice, human rights and holistic health. The topics she addresses through her work are powerful and heart-centered and focus on Holistic Health, Social Justice, Human Rights and Animal Rights. They reflect her passion for creating positive change in people and the communities they serve. At the age of 26, Allison endured the devastating loss of both her parents to cancer after long and challenging battles. Witnessing her mother and father suffer so intensely and needlessly from a cure that brought more pain than the disease, Allison soon dedicated her life to finding a better way to heal. She watched in disbelief as doctors prescribed drug after drug, observed her parents’ hair fall out, their rapidly aging faces, and their exceedingly diminishing vitality. The tragedy instilled in her an unwavering passion for nutritional medicine, and propelled her into the world of holistic health and alternative healing. Allison’s firm commitment to natural health is further evidenced by her achievement of a Masters Degree in Spiritual Psychology. Allison is currently  in the process of directing Food Heals, a documentary with an all star cast, that focuses on the healing power of food as medicine.   I met Allison in the city of angels a few years ago when I was a guest on her podcast: Food Heals not once, but 3 times. After the first appearance on her show, it was clear we are like minded kindred spirits both working to raise awareness about the healing power of food and a sustainable lifestyle. Sadly Suzy was unavailable to join us for this interview, but I think Allison and I managed to have a lively discussion that I hope will inspire and empower you on your healing journey. Food is medicine guys, and Allison and I dive into this topic in this conversation. If you’re suffering from an illness, or have a loved one who is, I hope you get some inspiration and learn something here that supports you.   We talk about the best foods to eat to heal as well as those to avoid, we discuss the documentaries that helped us learn how to thrive in this lifestyle, and Allison reveals her biggest mistakes as well as tips when starting on the healthy lifestyle path.   Allison says “My mission is to educate others that we can heal ourselves. We just have to believe it and do the work.” So are you ready to do the work to live your healthiest life ever? Let’s go… And make sure to check out the show notes on visionary-lifestyle.com/podcast for links to the things we discuss in this episode. Mariko’s Top 5 StrengthsFinder Strengths Maximizer Strategic Futuristic Belief Self-Assurance   Key Takeaways When you are struggling, you can lean into others with the Strengths you need to “borrow” them. Belief is a beautiful Strength. You can borrow from someone else’s Belief until you find it for yourself. Perfectionism is a pointed overuse of Maximizer, as is scope-creep. To help you avoid being completely overwhelmed, start paying closer attention to your triggers—the signs or symptoms that appear when overwhelm is starting to take over. Identify the first triggers to keep the overwhelm at bay even more. Give yourself the gift of five minutes every morning before you rush into your day, especially when you are feeling overwhelmed. This is vital to your own self-care and will catapult your productivity. With that came much greater confidence. It gives you self-control when you have control of your inner state. Thoughts on Breathing I'm amazed that more dance techniques don't encorporate the breathing. Breath has it's own innate energy. Inhilation is actually called inspiration. Inhiliation is literally receiving new energy from the universe. Exhilation, I call it the liberating breath, the cleansing breath, the releasing breath and for me it's a very under used resource that we all have. It's so close, and yet, because it's always there, we tend to be blind to it. Ancient systems like Yoga, and all of the mystical traditions really, use the breath as a doorway. The more we can be aware of it, moment by moment, I think the more it's enhances our quality of life and the way we show up into life. Suggested Resources Book: Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind: Informal Talks on Zen Meditation and Practice by Shunryu Suzuki App: Relax Melodies (Mix and Choose Different Sound Effects) Bullying Story Yes, I have several stories about bullying. When I first came to this country I was nine and a half years old and we were in upstate New York where at that time there were very few ethnic people. I think my sister and I were the only Asian kids in an entire elementary school. It was actually a boom because we got so much attention from the teachers. I think that made a few of the other kids jealous. In the beginning, every morning we had to put our hand on our heart and recite the Pledge of Allegience to the United States of America. Those are some advance words like 'individual', I couldn't pronounce. I phonetically memorized it after a few months. I was just mouthing it and these two kids were sitting across from the table. They were sneering at me and started to push the table towards me saying, 'you don't know what it means, you can't say it'. They started to push me and at that moment I felt so humiliated and helpless. I didn't know how to counter that because ... the teacher was oblivious and so I let it get to me. I just sat there holding my tears back. If it were me now, I probably see that these kids were just acting out of jealousy. Kids can be quite cruel and it's really tough because when you're a child you're not equipped with the level of self awareness and self-confidence that allows you to fight back or to say something. I didn't have the words. I didn't know the language well enough to fight back like that. It was the first experience of being bullied and I was older than these kids because I was demoted two grades because I couldn't speak any English. It was a tough time. I think life gives us experience and it made me more determined to learn English and to work really hard to master the language. Exploring Personal Development, Zenfully   Mariko Hirakawa is an internationally known Yoga expert and founder of Visionary Yoga, a personal development company dedicated to accelerating the growth of motivated individuals and companies through the wisdom of Yoga. She's a teacher of teachers, presenting at Yoga Festivals and conferences around the world.   Mariko has had two defining moments. One was when she was a professional ballet dancer at age 19 in NYC, going through a "purpose-crisis". The moment Mariko started to question what the purpose of her spending 8-10 hours in a dance studio was, why she danced, everything started to fall apart. Mariko then realized dance, the one thing she had dedicated herself to, was not her real purpose.   From that moment Mariko has been seeking to first realize and live into that dimension for herself on a more constant basis, and second, to spread the message and the EXPERIENCE of the depth dimension of Yoga - the message of Yoga as the doorway to your most expanded, most resourceful state, around the world.   The second was when I had been teaching for about 4 years, she started to attract many clients who were terminally ill. One time Mariko was out of town, she received news that one of her clients had passed away. Mariko sought all kinds of healing modalities – shiatsu, energy medicine, Chinese medicine, but when she came across Ayurveda, she knew it was something she needed to pursue deeper. Today, Mariko uses Ayurveda to serve her clients in connecting to their strengths and to use self-knowledge as a tool for healing and growth.
