Since launching this podcast two years ago, I continually marvel at the power of synchronicity, and the amazing wise souls that it's put in my path. Their books, online videos, and friendship have deepened my understanding of the wisdom traditions I've become so passionate about. This week's guest - Mas Vidal Maheshananda - is a prime example. Mas Vidal is considered a global ambassador for Yoga, Ayurveda, Vedanta, and the wisdom of the Indian culture. Through his many programs, lectures and private counseling, Mas has become one of the most influential voices for evolutionary living based on the principles of these wisdom traditions. He is the founder and director of the Dancing Shiva School and he developed MoreLifeMarket.com, an online Ayurvedic Superfoods company. As an Ayurvedic practitioner, he maintains an active international counseling practice that also integrates medical astrology. He is also the author of two books on Yoga and Ayurveda – Sun, Moon & Earth, and The Evolution Revolution. I thoroughly enjoyed my discussion with Mas, in which we touched on: A rethinking of the traditional model of evolution, centered on Darwinian cut-throat competition and survival of the fittest: the consideration of a more enlightened view on progress of the human species, that champions harmony, cooperation, and "soft power." This is the core theme of Mas' latest book The Evolution Revolution The misguided emphasis in the West on achieving the optimal mix of calories, proteins, vitamins, and other nutrients in our meals, which we continually freeze and reheat. A need to prioritize what's really essential (prana, or life force) in our food, drink, relationships, activities, information we consume, relationships and everything else we expose our mind, body, and soul to. The roots of Dancing Shiva, the platform through which Mas has made Yoga, Ayurveda, and numerous other Eastern wisdom traditions accessible to seasoned and novice practitioners alike. How "soft power" can extend beyond behavior to our consumption habits, i.e., that we can live a healthier, more yogic life by avoiding "hard" foods. The etymology of the name "Mas Vidal Maheshananda," a unique East Meets West combination. The benefits of living in communities - such as Santa Fe, New Mexico; Encinitas, California; and Pune, India - on one's mental, physical, and spiritual well-being The meaning of Mas' statement that "the world is my guru," and more specifically, how that ties back to his following of the "one true guru, Paramahansa Yogananda. How the Eastern wisdom traditions of Yoga and Ayurveda complement one another. Intrigued? Tami Hafzallah hails originally from Cairo, Egypt, and found her spirit grounded & home-grown through her explorations of Yoga and Ayurveda. In this podcast, she brings us along on her journey originating in a curious & contemplative childhood, through psychology studies in college that triggered her introduction to Yoga, breath work, meditation and self-discipline. "Yoga is here to liberate me." Her drive to be of service to humanity drove progressively deeper through experiences all over the world with Vedic sciences: music, chanting, ancient texts, Jyotish (Ayurvedic astrology), and bhatki, which means devotion. Bhakti is the style of practice that spoke most to Tami across the decades of her journey and has sustained her through years of parenting, working, breathing and living. "The truth of being a householder in the world is that we can't spend all the hours in the day in spiritual awareness, but we can be in devotion." She quotes Jack Kornfield's book, "After the Ecstasy, the Laundry." She shares with us one of her personal favorite mantras, 'begin again' because the nature of being human is honoring recurrent imperfection. We then discuss Tami's brilliant approach to attending to your Ayurvedic constitution during a group Yoga practice. Tami's grasp and application of the science to the daily life is palpable, regardless of wrestling toddlers into pants or on retreat abroad at a spiritual retreat. "This is my practice. My body is changing and this is my practice." Hearing her story is inspiring. Listening through her humility is an honor.

Which led me to spend quite a few years studying all the things!  Naturopathic Nutrition, Bodywork, Yoga & Ayurveda, not having a clue where I was heading with it all, but following my own curiosity and need to know!  Then ultimately understood that it was leading to what I know now is- learning how to have a deep trust in my inner self and my body, finding safety & home within.  Thanks to training as a YHC, I now run a course called “Live Intuitively' pulling all of my teachings together which guides people to deeply connect with their inner selves, their inner healer, and peel back the sometimes heavy layers of thinking & living that we accumulate over the years. In essence, I empower people to awaken the wisdom within themselves to be able to take their own health & happiness into their own hands, choosing how they want to feel and building the vibrant lives they want to live.

We talk about how we know each other, just a little nostalgia, before getting into conversation about the challenges of parenting, and how critical yoga and Ayurveda are for knowing yourself and your kids. Jenn shares the super cute way she describes the doshas in her book, and some of the ways she integrates Ayurveda into her parenting her active kid, her more passive little guy, and what dinnertime is like in their household. We commiserate on the challenges and surprises of parenthood, but even if you're not a parent, you probably teach a lot of them. Get to know a little bit about some insider information on what it's like to be a yogi mama. For show notes and more information on where to find Jenn's book, go to www.intelligentedge.yoga

As an achievement-based society, it’s no wonder we all feel a bit overwhelm and lack every now and then. In this episode, Mariko Hirakawa joins us to vulnerably talk about her challenges with taking on too much, feeling overwhelmed and not feeling as though what you have accomplished is enough. Listen in as we co-create strategies to tackle these challenges. About Mariko Hirakawa Mariko is an internationally known Yoga-Ayurveda expert and founder of Visionary Yoga, a personal development company dedicated to accelerating the growth of motivated individuals and companies through the sophisticated, and often hidden wisdom of Yoga. She’s a teacher of teachers, presenting at Yoga Festivals and conferences around the world, and currently works with businesses in New York City bringing Yoga as a powerful Peak Performance and personal development tool. A former professional ballet dancer as well as an Ayurvedic physician trained in India, she is dedicated to positioning Yoga as something far beyond fitness – the ultimate technology for human consciousness evolution. Mariko’s Top 5 StrengthsFinder Strengths Maximizer Strategic Futuristic Belief Self-Assurance   Key Takeaways When you are struggling, you can lean into others with the Strengths you need to “borrow” them. Belief is a beautiful Strength. You can borrow from someone else’s Belief until you find it for yourself. Perfectionism is a pointed overuse of Maximizer, as is scope-creep. To help you avoid being completely overwhelmed, start paying closer attention to your triggers—the signs or symptoms that appear when overwhelm is starting to take over. Identify the first triggers to keep the overwhelm at bay even more. Give yourself the gift of five minutes every morning before you rush into your day, especially when you are feeling overwhelmed. This is vital to your own self-care and will catapult your productivity. Time-Stamped Show Highlights 4:08 – Mariko’s service to others through yoga 6:54 – How you can find purpose if you’re having difficulty 9:38 – How Mariko uses Yoga in a corporate setting 12:46 – Mariko’s biggest challenge in her business life right now I would say it’s putting too much on my plate, taking on too much, a tendency toward perfection to reach crazy goals I impose on myself. And, it’s ironic, but I feel there’s this lack of balance. 16:34 – Mariko’s journey to yoga—the beginnings of her feelings of lack of self-worth 18:00 – How to remove the question, “What’s wrong with me?,” from your internal dialogue When you’re in that mode of “this isn’t enough” and “I’m not enough,” you need to identify how to draw the right line in the sand, so you can believe you are enough. 20:48 – How meditation helps Mariko deal with feelings of “lack” You don’t do things to compensate for the lack you feel; you’re doing it because it’s just the joy spilling over. 22:28 – Affirmations, breathing and meditation can help to recall self-worth 24:58 – One of the best strategies to use to limit feelings or situations of overwhelm 31:20 – A great takeaway to put into practice in your daily life 33:59 – A new level of self-awareness can bring you more power and greater opportunities 34:25 – A caveat about guilt Give yourself grace!
