Cancer is a tremendous topic. Dr Julianna Giles, ND, has focused her career on evidence-based approaches for this complex condition. Dr Giles now directs our Integrative Oncology program at Neuroveda Health in Seattle, Washington. In this podcast, she walks us through cancer, soup to nuts. This includes defining cancer, describing different types and stages of cancer, and the conventional treatments of surgery, radiation chemotherapy and now immunotherapy. Dr Giles then layers in integrative approaches including high-dose (aka ‘pro-oxidant') IV vitamin C, other botanicals, metabolic approaches to treating cancer and the relationship between other immune dysfunction, like auto-immune disease or chronic viral infections, to cancer development. Next is a review of the core elements of our program, including specialty liquid biopsy testing, the timing necessary for balancing pro-oxidation (chemo) with anti-oxidant (recovery) targets, and the value we place on collaboration with conventional oncologists and treatments. We welcome patients to our program at all stages of cancer status including those with a family history seeking prevention, monitoring for early detection (we do pap/ HPV testing in clinic), treatment at all stages (early, middle, late), post-chemo/radiation recovery, prevention of recurrence and palliative care/ hospice as it's needed. Listen in and please share widely with those who are being affected by cancer. This is a critical show for broadening ideas about treatment options and maintaining agency at a time when health stress can be overwhelming. We discuss: · 3:20 What is cancer? · 6:36: How do we think and name different types of cancer? · 9:09 Ayurvedic perspective of cancer · 11:25 How does conventional care typically treat cancer? Surgery, radiation, chemotherapy · 17:12 High dose IV (intravenous) vitamin C to make chemotherapy more tolerant to the body and prevent recurrences. · 25:00 Fasting and chemotherapy treatment · 28:35 Discussion about immunotherapy and metronomic (aka low dose) chemotherapy · 32:12 Defining Integrative Oncology including the value of collaboration to help conventional treatments to work better · 33:34 Looking at the foundations of health: asking and answering the ‘why' and ‘why now' questions · 35:33 Molecular targets of botanicals, for example, p53 targeted by no drugs but impacted by curcumin; · 36:55: Use of botanicals, diet and lifestyle as anti-inflammatory influences during pro-oxidant treatments like chemo- it's all about timing! · 42:33 Discussion of the Integrative Oncology program at Neuroveda Health · 56:30 Liquid biopsies looking for cell free mutated DNA shedding from cancers in the body · 1:03:33: Putting together integrative treatment plans including the metabolic approach to cancer treatment ( Care Oncology protocol out of the UK) · 1:08: How cancer interacts with the rest of the immune system, including auto-immune disease · 1:12:38 Recovery after cancer treatment Bio: Julianna Giles is a Naturopathic Physician with a Masters in Ayurveda who specializes in integrative oncology, endocrinology, chronic infections, medical cannabis, entheogens and psychoneuroimmunology. Over the next few sessions we will be exploring how to create balance within ourselves by studying how we can harmonise our Doshas. This is pointing us to the sister science of Yoga called Ayurveda.Ayur- Life, Longevity Veda- Knowledge, Wisdom and Spiritual Science The link between Yoga & Ayurveda is Prana. The components of this vital energy are Prana – vital force,Ojas – vital essence of nourishment,Tejas – vital light.David Frawley states in his book Yoga & Ayurveda “Yoga is the intelligence of Prana, seeking greater evolutionary transformation. Ayurveda is the healing power of Prana, seeking to consolidate the life systems it has already developed.”Your consciousness has a purpose to this embodiment. It is said to be Dharma – your purpose, your path, your mission that you are meant to carry out to serve yourself and others. As a Yogi, you are trying to find ways to fulfil that. Sva Dharma – is living in harmony with your own dharmic constitutional type and the personalised practices that keep you on your dharmic path to fulfilment. So being Adharmic – is living that brings pain, disease, discomfort and disharmony. Yoga shows us how to realise the “Self”. Through practice you understand the nature of mind and cultivate Self-Knowledge to lead you to liberation (This explained in the Series 7 Stages of Yoga). Ayurveda shows us how to live in such a way that our physical and mental actions don't deviate from what is realised as our true nature or Self. What is dharmic for one might not be for another. So it is important that we bespoke our diet, herbs, asana, PY, meditation and other practices to support a harmonious life. The combination of Yoga and Ayurveda directs one's practice, awareness and life to the realisation of what lies beyond this mundane experience as well as how to live in this world with skill. Yoga is the best therapeutic tool in Ayurveda for keeping the Doshas balanced. Asana, Pranayama and Mediation with Dharana (focused concentration) treats various ailments, structural problems, mental, emotional and energy conditions and disorders.Doshas are physical constitutions and functions that tell us how the organs and body work from a Yogic perspective of Prana. Bespoking practices according to individual types, or, 3 Doshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha Dosha. We are all three, just one is usually dominate and one usually goes out of balance easily. In this session we will do an overview of all three Doshas. Each Karma will be focusing on the positive qualities of each Dosha and how we can bespoke our practice to become familiar with them in ourselves. To read more and to practice with Zephyr Wildman, click here. Ayurveda isn't about “fixing” what's wrong or changing you into someone you're not. What if you viewed your constitution as a gift? What if you shifted your focus from the doshas toward cultivating sattva? In this episode Angela shares excerpts from Dr. Frawley's book, “Ayurveda & Yoga” in a discussion on the spiritual, life-affirming attributes of each constitutional type. Hey everybody! Episode 95 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with Ananta Ripa Ajmera. I was really happy to have Ananta come on the podcast and speak about Ayurveda, yoga, and Vedanta. It also encompasses aspects of yoga and stems from Vedic thought, and it was great to have Ananta go into all of these subjects. I hope you enjoy the conversation and wisdom of Ananta. In this episode of Oh My Heath ... There's HOPE! Jana talks with Miko Ramelow. Miko, is a Well-Being coach, Yoga therapy instructor, founder of the Opportunity Program, and a firm supporter of turning the imperfect into I'm perfect. How did I get here My childhood was very privileged – from private schools to round-the-world family trips, healthy home-cooked meals, and even endless unconditional love and support from my parents and brother. I had everything I needed to grow into a healthy, strong, and confident individual, yet I managed to drink too much alcohol, smoke too many cigarettes, touch the brink of anorexia, escape death several times and fall into depression. At around 22 I started to become more aware of the lifestyle I was cultivating, along with my family's redundant health challenges that modern medicine simply wasn't able to solve. I started to immerse myself into the topics of nutrition and exercising and finally decided to start a “Heilpraktiker” education to get an even deeper understanding of the physiology and anatomy of the human body. During one of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Lectures at my school, I had felt the urge to learn such ancient healing methods first hand, from native doctors. This desire quickly manifested into a plane ticket to India, the birthplace of Ayurveda & Yoga. Little did I know, that this 9-month trip, during which I had the privilege to learn from several yoga teachers, gurus, monks, Ayurvedic healers, and nutritionists, would also turn into a form of re-birth for myself. The best way to describe it would be to compare my previous life to that of a caterpillar and the time after my first trip to India, like that of a butterfly. Not only did I learn more about how to revitalize and maintain my physical form but I also experienced the power of enhancing my energy, cleansing my thoughts, understanding my emotions, and even opening up to a world beyond what my eyes could see. While I now know how important it is to also take the more spiritual aspects of life into consideration, I can very well understand that it can be difficult to grasp this concept. When anyone used to talk to me about spiritual energies, I would shake my head with a smile on my face, because my science-oriented mind could not grasp this concept. It is only because I have gone through some life-changing experiences myself and gradually broadened my horizon that I can understand people at different stages of their growth and hand them the right tools, at the right time, for their unique journey to happiness and health. All of this has led me to create the Opportunity Program which combines the powers of ancient wisdom and modern science to help adults, teenagers and children fall (back) in love with nature, with their lives, with others around them, and above all, with themselves. “Uncover yourself to discover your potential." This 30-minute episode is on: 1) I grew up privileged and yet struggled as an adult 2) Recognizing your journey and leaning into it 3) Learning yoga to move your energy 4) Learning your energy flow and how to open it up 5) Human design chart and what it can offer you This episode is about: In this episode, Jana and Miko discuss growing up privileged and yet struggling into adulthood, Recognizing your journey, and leaning into your destiny. Podcast Intro: Our habits begin with the things that our family does. Eventually, those things are firmly embedded. To truly make a difference requires time, focus, and a shift in energy inwardly. Reconnecting with our bodies is a must. The process by which behaviors become habitual is known as habit formation. Habits can arise without a person's knowledge, but they can also be cultivated—or eliminated—to better suit one's particular objectives. But how does one go about changing a bad habit? With acclaimed yoga teacher and author Myra Lewis, this episode will discuss how to nourish your holidays through a holistic approach. What you'll get out of tuning in: How our Habits are influenced by our family and environment How our Perspective in Life is essential to our general well-being How our Negative Thoughts generate negative vibrations into our Bodies Links/CTA: Hale Pule - Ayurveda & Yoga Facebook: Hale Pule Ayurveda and Yoga Instagram: @hale_pule Youtube: @yogaandayurveda Blog: Staying with your Path Blog: Nourishing yourself in whole and healthful ways Podcast: Hale Pule Highlights: Cate discusses a workshop on Emotional Eating Cate talks about self-healing before the Dharma. Cate explains how classic holiday recipes have been extensively replicated and have grown unhealthy. Cate discusses her wrong pattern of overeating and then exercising. Timestamps: [06:03 - 06:43] “What we call cause and effect is we take action and there's a result. And we've been taught to pretty much ignore that when it comes to everything outside of us. I'm going to do these things because it seems pleasurable. But tomorrow, I'm going to feel like crap. The foundation of this is we start to see that there's cause and effect. I have control over that, or I can have control over that. ” [15:52 - 16:20] “Follow your path rather than following everybody else. And it doesn't mean you can't be with them. Perhaps, it takes some inner focus to do that, but then you show up as a light in that environment. That's very different from just being part of the crowd and going along with whatever's happening there.” Quotes: "The most essential thing is that we reconnect with our bodies. Many of the things we think, "Oh, it's my body doing this or my body doing that," are actually done by our mind." "The level of impressions produced, or wounds that occur in the early stages of life is the most powerful piece in terms of modifying our relationship. That relates to our bond with our mother. And whether you think it's amazing or dreadful, it's simply the nature of it, and how you're reacting to it at this time in your life." "You'll always find out when there's a bad motive. Something that will lead us away from ourselves rather than toward ourselves. And so you have all that success on the surface, and you're empty on the inside." Guest Bio: Myra Lewin Ayurvedic Practitioner (AP) and Ayurveda Yoga Therapist (AYT), Myra Lewin is a professional member of the National Ayurvedic Medical Association (NAMA) and Yoga Alliance (ERYT 500). As a master yogini, Myra has amassed more than 50,000 hours of Yoga teaching experience spanning 30 years of practice. She's also the author of two books, Freedom in Your Relationship with Food and Simple Ayurvedic Recipes, and is the host of two awesome podcasts on holistic healing, “Everyday Ayurveda and Yoga at Hale Pule” and “Spark Your Intuition”.

This week we have another returning guest, here to speak about our body clocks and how different seasons, parts of the year, and even times of the day the Doshas are more dominant. If you missed my previous conversation with Micayla I suggest listening to episode 13 where we discussed Ayurveda, the three Doshas, and how to restore balance to your body. Micayla Kuehn is a Bay Area, California born & raised, Taurus sun//Taurus ascendant (hella earthy!), Certified Yoga Teacher & Ayurvedic Health Counselor (aka your holistic health hype woman), and a passionate lover of planet Earth, astrology, avocados, good puns, matcha, the Tropics, delicious & nutritious plant-based food & bevs, dreams, travel, social/emotional learning, personal development, and all things health & wellness. Her healing journey began while living on the island of Kauai, in 2012. It was there, removed from the daily distractions of the usual hustle & grind, that she began to really connect with the environment & herself. She began doing yoga & meditation, studying nutrition and changing her diet, and started looking at her unhealthy habits and limiting beliefs about herself. For the first time in her life, she recognized how much she had been normalizing symptoms of poor digestion & stress, and had her “AH HAH'' moment when she began to return to balance in her mind & body and realized how good it feels to FEEL GOOOOOD. Micayla found that simply synching up with the natural rhythms of the day, getting solid sleep, eating real food, moving her body regularly, and being in nature daily, contributed to a newfound sense of balance, health, and overall well being. The intention to unlearn her negative thought patterns & stories, to change her diet and lifestyle, and to begin loving & healing herself brought Micayla to Ayurveda, an ancient healing system that focuses on self-responsibility and self-care as a means to bring balance & health to the mind & body and to cultivate more self-love. She then studied at the California College of Ayurveda in 2015, where she also completed an Herbal Apprenticeship program & became a certified Ayurvedic Health Counselor & herb nerd. She went on to do a 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training, an Ayurvedic Massage & Body Therapy training, and a Vedic Immersion experience at Hale Pule (an Ayurveda & Yoga training center) on Kauai in 2017. In 2018, Micayla and her soul sister, Yvette co-created a business, Ancient Herban, where they create Ayurvedic herbal products and tools for self-care. Micayla's loving intention is to bridge the gap between ancient Ayurvedic wisdom and the modern-day hustler by making the information accessible, digestible (pun intended), and relatable so that her clients can actually implement and benefit from healthier diet & lifestyle habits. Many of us have become accustomed to the rapid and instant nature of this day's tech-savvy world. When it comes to finding balance, we tend to seek quick fixes to alleviate our stress and anxiety. James Bailey is the founder and an instructor of Sevanti Institute. He strives to help people achieve authenticity and cultivate faith in oneself through the gift of yoga. His online school has a three-tier yoga program leading to a certification for those who want to teach.
Keeping Your Life Balanced with Ayurveda Yoga and Sleep Hygiene with James Bailey Many of us have become accustomed to the rapid and instant nature of this day's tech-savvy world. When it comes to finding balance, we tend to seek quick fixes to alleviate our stress and anxiety. Whether due to impatience or shorter attention span, we've become less immersed and more disconnected from reality and each other. Too much social media and fast technology have tipped our energies to an imbalanced state filled with stress and anxiety. Listening to this episode will help you understand how imbalances form. James Bailey also teaches about Ayurveda yoga to improve our health and wellness. He also talks about the importance of healthy sleep and authenticity in healing. Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Learn about how the three doshas and how they can help you achieve the power of authenticity. Discover how sleep hygiene can lead you to a more mindful and fuller life in this technology-heavy and soundbite-driven world. How does James feel radically loved? Resources Mastery by Robert Greene Sevanti Institute for online Ayurveda programs Episode Highlights Changing Times James has had an increase in the number of students with lower attention spans. Everybody wants to learn in soundbites. People prefer rapid information. Doshas of Ayurveda and Imbalance According to Ayurveda, there are three fundamental energies of the body: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. They manage and control all the physiological functions of the body. Each is sensitive to the external factors we expose ourselves to—stress, food, lifestyle, and even our emotions. They are dynamic energies that fluctuate and change, causing the imbalances we experience. Vata is all about the flow and circulation of the body. It resembles the element of air. Pitta is the principle of conversion and transformation. It exemplifies the changes in the body and represents the fire element. Meanwhile, Kapha is the principles of water and earth. It’s the capacity to generate and rebuild tissues. Yoga and Tradition The idea of tradition is relative. The way James sees it is there are two kinds of people in the yoga world: traditionalists and innovators. Traditionalists are people who are consistent with the classic texts. On the other hand, innovators challenge tradition and want to make things more personalized. How Tech Changed Yoga and Its Effect On Us There is no longer a sense of community. This online connectivity creates more disconnection. It also takes away opportunities to collaborate or meet with people around you. Stress and anxiety have become an epidemic, and online platforms reinforce them. James' Practice for a Healthier Sleep To counter this epidemic, James gave up screen time and worked on sadhana. In their household, the day is over at 9 p.m., all the screens are down from laptops to cell phones, and sadhana space begins. He practices yoga in front of an altar in his room for circulation before going to bed. He does 20 minutes of sun salutations, then 10 minutes of floor postures, and the usual routine of Pranayama mantra. Finally, James practices Yoga Nidra for 10 minutes. It is referred to as sleep hygiene in Western practices. Benefits of Sleep Hygiene It improves sleep. Sleep hygiene lowers anxiety levels. It also improves concentration. You will feel more present and more mindful. What's Your Dosha? Everybody has three doshas. The doshas keep fluctuating depending on your last meal, your mood, time of day, stress levels. What does not change, though, is your constitution—your dominant doshas. When your doshas get too high, we get imbalances. We do not want to balance all our doshas but to keep them within our constitution. Principle of Authenticity Be true to yourself and accept who you are, your strengths and weaknesses. James believes in the power of authenticity when it comes to healing physically and spiritually. We cannot heal if we use remedies that work for someone else. Authenticity is the highest expression of who we are, our self-love, and self-respect. Ayurveda for You The path toward growth and nourishment is unique for each individual. There is no one-size-fits-all in Ayurveda. There are no trends in Ayurveda that you need to ride. 5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode “So they want it really quick, they want small points, and it's just really the way the online world has become. I think we've just accepted that we have shorter attention spans because there's so much more to take in.” “So they're (the doshas) very dynamic in their nature; they fluctuate up and down frequently, which is what causes imbalances.” “Everybody wants to be something else than what they really are.” Authenticity is the path when it comes to healing both physically and spiritually because we can't really heal if we're going to use remedies that work for somebody else.” “There is no Ayurveda for everybody. There's no nutrition for everybody. There's no trends in Ayurveda or in real healing. There's no trends. There's my diet, there's your diet, and all the listeners’ diets should be completely different.” About James James Bailey is the founder and an instructor of Sevanti Institute. Mind is the doorway where Happiness, Health, Prosperity enters and Mind is the doorway where Disease, Fear, Anger, enters. What enters through the mind DEPENDS COMPLETELY on what we feed our mind says the ancient texts of Vedanta. My Guru Paramahansa Yogananda has said this so aptly - Mind is the cause of LIBERATION and Mind is the cause of BONDAGE in this LIFE. In this episode we will get to know from the texts of Vedanta, Bhagavad Gita & Ayurveda - WHAT MIND IS? WHO CONTROLS THE MIND? DOES MIND RESIDE IN THE BRAIN? WHY DO WE SUCCUMB TO MOOD SWINGS? DEPRESSION ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA? HOW TO BECOME A CONSCIOUS MIND GARDENER? I would love to hear from you! From the Ayurvedic perspective, everything on the planet (including us) is made up of different combinations of five elements: earth, water, fire, air and ethers. The three doshas – vata, pitta and kapha – each represent two elements and are responsible for various functions in the body and mind.. To learn more about how to understand the doshas, have a read of this blog by Hale Pule. PRAKRITI is a Sanskrit word which means ‘first state or creation’. In this context we are talking about the state of health in which are all first born in to. TAMAS, along with RAJAS and SATTVA is one of the three qualities that are present in everything around us, including within our own bodies as well as the foods that we eat. Ayurveda teaches that we need all 3 of these qualities, also known as the MAHA GUNAS, in order to live but we should take care to balance these qualities. Read here for more on what each of these qualities represent and how to balance them. Listen to the MAHAMRITYUNJAYA MANTRA here. She shares the following: Amy's presentation titled 'Ayurveda Yoga Therapy for Stilling the Mind' - we constantly experience thoughts, feelings and sensations that can disrupt our concentration and disturb our peace of mind. Both Ayurveda and Yoga give us the tools that turn our minds away from chaos and rigidity and toward one-pointed attention, the hallmark of an undisturbed mind. Dr. Ramkumar Kutty's presentation on 'Ayurveda and the Mind'. Amy explains how Dr. Ramkumar spoke about our heightened sense of 'I' and how it's the source of our suffering as it's creating individualism and how we need to move from 'I' to 'We' in order to suffer less. Book recommendations! I'm always being asked what I'm reading or what I'd recommend on particular topics, so I plucked three well-loved books off my shelves on Ayurveda, Yoga and Anatomy and tell you what's great about them, including some of my favourite passages and information. The Everyday Ayurveda Cookbook by Kate O'DonnellWhile it may seem unusual to recommend a cookbook for reading, Kate's book is a cookbooknot a recipe book. She fronts the recipes with a wonderful and thorough section on some of the theories and concepts behind Ayurveda cooking and digestion.21st Century Yoga: Culture, Politics and Practice, edited by Carol Horton & Roseanne HarveyThis collection of essays is essential reading to the socially minded yogi. I always recommend it to yoga teacher training grads who are looking for some of the cultural issues pertinent to the evolution of yoga. Published in 2012, it's still a relevant read even if some things have happily evolved with the conversation, and many things have not. A great way to get into the minds of some smart yogis you may not have heard of yet, and original writing from those you have. The Story of the Human Body: Evolution, Health and Disease, by Daniel E. LiebermanA history of how humans arrived at being human from being apes, which we learn was not a foregone conclusion! A fascinating journey through how and why we evolved into what we are, what we lost as we gained a long the way, and the impact that culture (not just modern culture!) has had on us. This book has been so useful in my teaching and understanding of anatomy. For more information on Kathryn's work, where to find her, and more podcasts, visit www.intelligentedge.yogaFor online practices, including accessible yoga classes from retreat and specifically recorded for patrons, visit www.patreon.com/intelligentedgeyoga
