Yoga is one of those things that opens the spiritual door for a lot of people while also catering to the physical health of their bodies. There are so many ways yoga supports us, beyond the poses and meditation you might already be familiar with. To me, yoga seems like the perfect convergence of exercise, meditation, self exploration, and relating to others around us. It's not like pilates or barre or any other workout class offered at the gym. It's an entire lifestyle based on spiritual principles of growth, expansion, and connection. Today I'm excited to have Leah Hynes joining us in conversation about what it really means to practice yoga on a deeper level. Leah is a flexibility yoga teacher and mom who believes that loosening up the body is how we loosen up the mind. We are going far beyond the asana postures, which is only 1/8th of yoga philosophy! Stay tuned.

What might yoga look like if it we weren't making shapes? As Mary Richards explains in Teach People, Not Poses, the purpose of practice is self-inquiry, so one way to start is by getting more familiar with physical form, instead of contorting to follow instructions.Mary's approach is down-to-earth, yet shaped by decades of study. A self-described “anatomy nerd”, she's also guided by philosophy, having first encountered yoga via the Bhagavad Gītā as a teenager. Among other topics, our conversation explores:* The extent to which everyone's body is different* How a fixation on postural alignment causes injury* Why many modern classes teach unhelpful methods* Which specific āsanas might be worth abandoning* Whether one-to-one teaching makes most sense* How physical practice unwinds mental issues* What it means to be the “Sith Lord of Yoga”Mary's book is published by Shambhala, and she's offering a webinar via Yogacampus (on January 26) that shares some techniques for getting grounded in gravity...I like how Mary call herself a facilitator. I'm doing more facilitation too – in the form of a men's group that starts on Sunday, and a philosophy immersion in February. If you enjoy the conversation, and would like to fuel more, please consider subscribing or buy me a coffee... Could you imagine a yoga class without postures? In fact, millions of dedicated yoga practitioners don't practice asana at all. In this episode, Annie and Jen discuss ways to engage with the teachings separate from asana, drawing on guidance from the "Bhagavad Gita" and their own experiences. "Bhagavad Gita" quote mentioned in the episode: Chapter 2 Verse 42-43"There are ignorant people who speak flowery words and take delight in the letter of the law, saying that there is nothing else. Their hearts are full of selfish desires, Arjuna. Their idea of heaven is their own enjoyment, and the aim of all their activities is pleasure and power."Summer Recommended ReadingContemplating Reality, Andy KarrWaking, Matthew SandfordDavid Copperfield, Charles DickensSilo Series, Hugh Howey~ ~ ~We love to hear from you! There are many aspects to yoga that no one talks about. The idea of experiencing contentment and bliss for many of us can definitely seem like a far fetched dream. Whilst yoga is often known for it's physical benefits and stress reduction, when we expand our perspective we can use yoga as a tool to help achieve a deep inner contentment, a feeling of coming back home to who we truly are, without all the self-doubt, judgements and the need to be striving for something else. We can simply breathe and be in the moment.Whilst it's true we are physical beings here on earth, we are also so much more than that. You are a multidimensional creature!Listen to this episode and develop your understanding of the five koshas, or layers of our being, from the densest to the subtlest elements of existence and how these can be tapped into through practicing yoga.Never heard of the Koshas? On Thursday October 16th the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present an advance review on his forthcoming book Hermetic Yoga Beyond the Middle Pillar this is a new offering from CHS/OTA that has been a long-time in the works. The yoga system described and brought to life in this book has been practiced by the O.T.A. since 1975 and is an extension of Israel Regardie's Golden Dawn Middle Pillar exercise following the Lightning flash going down the spheres from Kether to Malkuth forming a complete straight line chakra system similar to the Hindu system of Laya Yoga, In this case the Spheres of the Tree of Life are the planets within. this system traces its origin to two German Rosicrucian mystics Jacob Bohme and Johann Gitchel. The late Frederick Adams of Feraferia was also working on a similar system and an essay of his is included Adams also provided the beautiful cover art depicting a Goddess in the stars. Also included is an essy by Frater Osiris (Michael S. Downs) linking Hermetic Yoga to The Chemical wedding of Christian Rosencreutz via Johann Gitchel' s spiral path of the planets in his natural man drawing which is one of the keys to the Hermetic Yoga conception. The book will be followed with a deck of Yoga cards which will enable the practitioner to carry the system in his pocket for meditation and study. This is going to be a great aid to magick and spiritual development and provides a vital resource that Western magicians have needed for centuries. Now we can call on the Gods within and exercise all of the powers that our oriental colleagues have called upon for centuries. So if you want to get a head start on the latest magical tools of empowerment tune in and we'll start warming up for the session.

We are reminded that surrendering to a higher power is part of the 8 Limbed Path of Yoga (episode 3). This week's challenge is to reflect on what you are worshiping or devoting yourself to. Do you consider that devotion your practice of Bhakti Yoga? Share with us!

Carol Horton, PhD is a writer, educator and activist. She works at the intersection of mindful yoga, social science, and social justice. Carol serves as Vice President of the Yoga Service Council and was a co-founder of Chicago's Socially Engaged Yoga Network. In her desire to make yoga accessible to all she has taught yoga in underprivileged areas such as Chicago's Cook County Jail, a drop-in centre for homeless women, a residential foster care facility, and a community health centre. Shannon asked Carol Horton to be a guest on The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast after reading Carol's thoughtful blog post called Yoga: Beyond the BS. Carol discusses the negativity surrounding yoga, especially in social media. She brings up the shadow side of yoga, such as the commercialization and commodification of yoga, with the intention of being critical in a balanced fashion. It is her wish that yoga teachers employ honesty and discernment as they navigate the yoga world. From Carol's first yoga class in a church basement to her profound healing and spiritual experiences while practising, it is clear yoga has meant a lot to her. Carol doesn't believe that yoga culture needs to be taken down with critique but rather respectful discussions in conjunction with work so there is power behind the discourse. Carol believes in supporting and nurturing the good and calling out the bad so we don't lose the teachers that can make profound changes in the lives of others. 2:20 Shannon's thoughts on the negativity in the yoga world and connecting with Carol Horton's blog post Yoga: Beyond the BS 7:25 How Carol got started in yoga and how it evolved into her current work 11:55 Difficult childbirth was a profound experience in Carol's life that shifted her perspective on yoga and saw the importance of trauma-informed yoga 15:00 Lying in savasana and slipping into a “spark of consciousness” 19:30 What led Carol to write the blog post Yoga: Beyond the BS 26:10 Problematic aspects of online discussions, social media as a culturally powerful medium and online bullies 30:25 When Carol thought about walking away from yoga and why she didn't 35:00 The positive and negative response to Carol's blog post 38:50 Is there a place yoga teachers can go to for fruitful discussions? 41:30 Carol's editing work for the book: “Best Practices for Yoga in the Criminal Justice System” 43:40 Carol's desire to see healthcare (including yoga) accessible to all; working with those in homeless shelters, foster homes, prisons and more to help those who've experienced trauma to heal 52:10 How to contact Carol 53:50 Shannon's final thoughts Links Carol Horton's Website Blog Post: Yoga: Beyond the BS Book: Best Practices for Yoga in the Criminal Justice System Editor: Carol Horton PhD The Yoga Service Council Forrest Yoga Website Embodied Philosophy Podcast The Connected Teacher Facebook Group Follow The Connected Teacher on Youtube Book a Consultation Call with Shannon 5-Day Content Creation Challenge Define Your Yoga Niche Online Course Yoga for Pelvic Health Teacher Training Mama Nurture Teacher Training (RPYT) Gratitude to our Sponsor Schedulicity

With that came much greater confidence. It gives you self-control when you have control of your inner state. Thoughts on Breathing I'm amazed that more dance techniques don't encorporate the breathing. Breath has it's own innate energy. Inhilation is actually called inspiration. Inhiliation is literally receiving new energy from the universe. Exhilation, I call it the liberating breath, the cleansing breath, the releasing breath and for me it's a very under used resource that we all have. It's so close, and yet, because it's always there, we tend to be blind to it. Ancient systems like Yoga, and all of the mystical traditions really, use the breath as a doorway. The more we can be aware of it, moment by moment, I think the more it's enhances our quality of life and the way we show up into life. Suggested Resources Book: Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind: Informal Talks on Zen Meditation and Practice by Shunryu Suzuki App: Relax Melodies (Mix and Choose Different Sound Effects) Bullying Story Yes, I have several stories about bullying. When I first came to this country I was nine and a half years old and we were in upstate New York where at that time there were very few ethnic people. I think my sister and I were the only Asian kids in an entire elementary school. It was actually a boom because we got so much attention from the teachers. I think that made a few of the other kids jealous. In the beginning, every morning we had to put our hand on our heart and recite the Pledge of Allegience to the United States of America. Those are some advance words like 'individual', I couldn't pronounce. I phonetically memorized it after a few months. I was just mouthing it and these two kids were sitting across from the table. They were sneering at me and started to push the table towards me saying, 'you don't know what it means, you can't say it'. They started to push me and at that moment I felt so humiliated and helpless. I didn't know how to counter that because ... the teacher was oblivious and so I let it get to me. I just sat there holding my tears back. If it were me now, I probably see that these kids were just acting out of jealousy. Kids can be quite cruel and it's really tough because when you're a child you're not equipped with the level of self awareness and self-confidence that allows you to fight back or to say something. I didn't have the words. I didn't know the language well enough to fight back like that. It was the first experience of being bullied and I was older than these kids because I was demoted two grades because I couldn't speak any English. It was a tough time. I think life gives us experience and it made me more determined to learn English and to work really hard to master the language. He is grateful to his teachers, Sharonji (Gannon), Davidji (Life) who he has had the privilege of studying with for over 15 years, for igniting his devotion to the Jivamukti Yoga practice and for inspiring countless students around the world. I met Jules in India where he was teaching at the International Yoga festival in Rishikesh, where we recorded this interview in a garden at the Parmarth Niketan Ashram. Jules is a bit different than most of the yoga teachers I’ve met. He has a wicked sense of humor, that he brings into his classes, and he’s clearly very well studied and only when he speaks do you realize his tremendous depth. In this interview we discuss the 5 Tenants of Jivamukti Yoga, the yogic perspective on Veganism, his experience Teaching in Correctional Facilities Yoga Beyond the 8 Limbs, the importance of Planting Seeds, and Jules gives us a deep explanation of what it means to live the first tenant of yoga, Ahimsa. As always, notes to things discussed are in the show notes, which you can find on the blog post for this episode at visionary-lifestyle.com/podcast Enjoy and Namaste Show Notes ___________________ Cowspiracy Film http://www.cowspiracy.com/ What the Health? On Thursday October 16th the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present an advance review on his forthcoming book Hermetic Yoga Beyond the Middle Pillar this is a new offering from CHS/OTA that has been a long-time in the works. The yoga system described and brought to life in this book has been practiced by the O.T.A. since 1975 and is an extension of Israel Regardie's Golden Dawn Middle Pillar exercise following the Lightning flash going down the spheres from Kether to Malkuth forming a complete straight line chakra system similar to the Hidhu system of Laya Yoga, In this case the Spheres of the Tree of Life are the planets within. this system traces its origin to two German Rosicrucian mystics Jacob Bohme and Johann Gitchel. The late Frederick Adams of Feraferia was also working on a similar system and an essay of his is included Adams also provided the beautiful cover art depicting a Goddess in the stars. Also included is an essy by Frater Osiris (Michael S. Downs) linking Hermetic Yoga to The Chemical wedding of Christian Rosencrutz via Johann Gitchel' s spiral path of the planets in his natural man drawing which is one of the keys to the Hermetic Yoga conception.
