On this episode of the Economic and Business History channel, I spoke with Dr. Victoria Basualdo and Dr. Marcelo Bucheli about their new edited book. Big Business and Dictatorships in Latin America: A Transnational History of Profits and Repression (Palgrave Macmillan, 2020) is an edited volume that studies the relationship between big business and the Latin American dictatorial regimes during the Cold War. The first section provides a general background about the contemporary history of business corporations and dictatorships in the twentieth century at the international level. The second section comprises chapters that analyze five national cases (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, and Peru), as well as a comparative analysis of the banking sector in the Southern Cone (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay). The third section presents six case studies of large companies in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Central America. This book is crucial reading because it provides the first comprehensive analysis of a key yet understudied topic in Cold War history in Latin America. Victoria Basualdo is Researcher at the Argentine National Scientific Council (CONICET) and at the Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO), and Professor in the Political Economy Master's Degree Program at FLACSO, Argentina. She specializes in contemporary economic and labor history, with special focus on structural changes and the transformations of trade-union organizations in Argentina and Latin America. Hartmut Berghoff is Director of the Institute of Economic and Social History at the University of Göttingen, Germany. He was the Director of the German Historical Institute in Washington DC (2008-2015) and held various visiting positions at the Center of Advanced Study, Harvard Business School, the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme, and the Henley Business School. He has worked on the history of consumption, business history, immigration history and the history of modern Germany. Marcelo Bucheli is Associate Professor of Business Administration at the Gies College of Business, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA. His research focuses on the political economy of multinational corporations in Latin America, theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of the relationship between firms and states in a historical perspective, and business groups. Grab my free e-course, where I break down job titles, salary ranges, and employers hiring macro social workers right now. Here is the link: https://macroandpaid.com/Register for my upcoming live webinar at: https://macroandpaid.com/-----3 Signs Your Social Work Degree Program Didn't Prepare You to Get the Job You Want | Macro Social Work Career CoachYou can do everything right, take the macro social work track in your MSW degree program, complete your internship, show up fully, and still graduate feeling unprepared to actually get the job you want after graduation. In this episode, I break down what I call the Career Instruction Gap. The gap between what your degree taught you and what you actually need to know to get hired for high-quality, macro-level roles. And I don't just talk about the problem, I give you two sets of signs to help you figure out if this is happening to you.1️⃣ If you're still in your degree program:- You chose the macro social work degree track in your MSW degree program, but haven't learned how to land a macro social work job.- You've asked about macro social work career options, and no one can give you a clear answer. - You've done powerful work in your internship/practicum, but don't know how to discuss it to help you get macro social work jobs.2️⃣ If you've already graduated:- You're applying for macro social work jobs but not getting interviews or job offers.- You're downplaying your internship even though it was real, systems-level work.- You feel stuck between what you thought your social work degree would unlock and what's actually showing up in your job search & career. This is what the Career Instruction Gap looks like in real life. It's not about lacking skills; it's about lacking a job market strategy. And that's not your fault, but it's your responsibility to fill it.Attend my upcoming live webinar: “How You're Already Qualified to Get a Macro Social Work Job”

Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1: Regents approve first AI degree program The University System of Georgia has approved its first bachelor’s degree in applied artificial intelligence, launching this fall at Middle Georgia State University’s Warner Robins campus. The program aims to prepare students for careers in industries like health care, business, and cybersecurity, addressing Atlanta’s growing demand for tech talent. With AI playing a key role in areas like supply chain optimization and IT, the program expects to start with 65 students, growing to 168 by its fourth year. STORY 2: State lifts poultry suspension after bird flu outbreak Georgia’s Department of Agriculture has lifted its suspension on poultry activities after extensive testing found no new cases of avian influenza. The suspension, prompted by two bird flu cases in Elbert County last month, had halted poultry sales and events statewide, excluding retail meat and egg sales. Commissioner Tyler Harper emphasized the ongoing threat of bird flu to Georgia’s poultry industry but celebrated the return to normal operations. Over 4,500 tests on nearly 50,000 chickens revealed no further detections, though national outbreaks have contributed to record-high egg prices. STORY 3: Atlanta teen snuck into Apalachee High during school day An Atlanta teen, Herson Galindo, was arrested for trespassing and drug possession after sneaking into Apalachee High School on a bus with his girlfriend, a student there. Galindo, a Tri Cities High School student, was found hiding in hallways and bathrooms before being reported by another student. This incident follows a tragic mass shooting at the school five months ago, which left four dead, and a separate gun-related arrest last month. While Galindo was unarmed, he was found with a THC vape pen and faces multiple charges, including possession of drugs on school grounds. The bill, passed along party lines, also prohibits state-owned healthcare facilities and physicians from providing such care. Democrats criticized the legislation as harmful, mean-spirited, and a distraction from real issues, warning it could hurt the economy and violate federal civil rights laws. Republicans, led by Sen. Blake Tillery, argued the bill reflects the will of most Georgians and ensures taxpayer dollars aren’t spent on these procedures. An amendment for mental health care exceptions was rejected. STORY 5: House Speaker Burns names interim chief of staff Former Gov. Nathan Deal’s chief of staff, Chris Riley, will temporarily serve as House Speaker Jon Burns’ chief of staff following an accident that hospitalized Terry England, the current chief of staff. Speaker Burns praised Riley’s experience and dedication, expressing confidence in his leadership during England’s recovery. Riley, who served as Deal’s chief of staff from 2011 to 2018, said he’s honored to step in and support Burns’ agenda. Burns assured colleagues that England is improving and will return to his role once recovered. Riley and his family run a small cattle farm in Hall County. Music Studio Startup: Helping music teachers thrive as entrepreneurs
We commonly think of entrepreneurs as people who start businesses, but over the years I've really come to appreciate people who bring an entrepreneurial spirit to the work they do in existing organizations — sometimes these people are called “intrapreneurs.” Today I'm talking to one such person - Chris Madden - who spearheaded the introduction of a new masters degree program at his university. You'll hear about how proposing a new master's program is a lot like pitching a new business, from the planning stage to the marketing stage. A full transcript and resources from this episode can be found at MusicStudioStartup.com/episode124.

He completed post-doctoral work in ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School and is a professor with the Institute for Vision Research at the University of Iowa. Rutgers grad student Anna Tamke penned an op-ed in PR Week sharing her thoughts on why college has not prepared her for a career in public relations – a plea for higher education to teach real world skills in the classroom. "It's a rude awakening when you graduate with a PR degree and realize you're unemployed in a post-pandemic world with an unreal expectation for what working in your field looks like,” Tamke wrote. “If the education system properly taught students — like myself — what PR is and how to do it, entering the workforce wouldn't be so hard." Austin and Thomas are joined by Calgary-based comms pro Matthew John to weigh on the opinion piece, share their personal experience breaking into corporate communications, what schools of higher learning can do to properly equip students to succeed, and why it's important for students and professionals to look after their own professional development.Music Credit: Smoke (with Lostboycrow) – Feather FOLLOW MATTHEW JOHN ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Who's Inspiring Impacts today? Jenny Bloom! Jenny Bloom, Ed.D. is a co-founder and leading expert on the Appreciative Advising and Appreciative Education movements. Tune in as Jenny speaks with host Dr. Lindsey Godwin about how appreciative advising can help students and advisors make inspiring impacts on themselves, each other, and the world. Jenny shares insights on how Appreciative Inquiry helps you reframe challenges into solutions and visions of success and how appreciative advising can increase retention and GPAs in college students. Then, she shares her vision for how Appreciative Inquiry will evolve into the future of education. Dr. Jenny Bloom joined the Department of Educational Leadership and Research Methodology at Florida Atlantic University in August 2015 as an Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Higher Education Leadership Master's Degree Program. As a co-founder of the Appreciative Advising and Appreciative Education movements, Jenny established the annual Appreciative Advising Summer Institute, the Appreciative Education Conference, an online Appreciative Advising course, the process for Certifying Appreciative Advisers, and other exciting initiatives. Jenny has co-authored 6 books, 6 book chapters, 31 articles, and even co-founded and serves as a section editor for the Journal of Appreciative Education (JAE). Episode Highlights: How Jenny discovered Appreciative Inquiry over 20 years ago and what inspired her to enter the field of advising. What it takes to integrate Appreciate Inquiry, advising, and education. The 6 phases of appreciative advising + example questions you can ask students. Shocking stats that show the impact of appreciative advising in higher education. How appreciative advising grew into a movement that inspires impact. Research studies that inspire Jenny the most about the impact of advisors adopting appreciative advising methods. The biggest impact appreciative advising has made on Jenny herself. Resources Mentioned: Incorporating Appreciative Inquiry into Academic Advising by Jennifer Bloom and Nancy Archer Martin (2002) https://journals.psu.edu/mentor/article/view/61701/61346 The Appreciative Advising Revolution by Jennifer Bloom, Bryant Hutson, and Ye He: https://bit.ly/46defYH FAU Office of Appreciative Education: https://www.fau.edu/education/centersandprograms/oae Inspiring Quotes: “90% of the people who've met with an appreciative advisor, and this was a voluntary thing… were eligible to return the following semester after they've come back off of dismissal, versus 33% of the other students who did not meet with an appreciative advisor.” “The sustained impact is, I think, really important. It's not about a one year blip going up… it's looking at this data over time that really matters.” “Appreciative advising is not just a powerful framework for enhancing interactions between advisors and students, it's a framework for how you build good relationships with other people, whether they be students or your supervisor or your colleague.” What is Appreciative Inquiry? Appreciative Inquiry, sometimes referred to as “the other AI”, is one of the best kept secrets behind meaningful and lasting change at organizations. The AI approach is strength-based, meaning it focuses on identifying and leveraging successes to solve problems, rather than focusing on trying to fix individual failures. Electronic sports, or esports, has seen a remarkable spike in popularity over the years, with a recent study from Pew Research finding that 90% of teenagers between the ages of 13 and 17 play video games. Seeking to both capitalize on the tremendous popularity of esports and continue to innovate, expand career options in emerging fields and deliver academic programs that meet its students' needs, Syracuse University will soon begin offering a new, first-of-its-kind degree program focused on esports. The program taps into the rapidly growing, multibillion-dollar esports industry, serving as a continuation of the work already happening on campus. Jeff Rubin, special advisor to the chancellor on esports and digital transformation, Olivia Stomski, professor of practice of television, radio and film and director of the Newhouse Sports Media Center, and Chris Hanson, associate professor of English in the College of Arts and Sciences, were on the University-wide task force charged with conducting the benchmarking that led to the creation of the esports program. Rubin, Stomski and Hanson reveal why the time was right for Syracuse University to add an esports degree program, share how the new academic offering will position students for success once they graduate, explain the research that went into creating this program and discuss the rapid growth of esports on campus.
