This week on "the worst of the best," Stephen takes us through an episode of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" that didn't quite hit its usual comedic mark. Titled "Son of 'But Seriously Folks,'" the episode features Jerry Van Dyke as Wes Callison, a comedian who tries to give up stand-up comedy for a job at WJM. While Van Dyke's performance shines with his trademark humor, the episode struggles to maintain the series' typically sharp comedic pacing and character development. Tune in for a lively analysis of the highs and lows in the life of a TV classic. Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we talk to Matt Asner, son of seven-time Emmy winner, actor Ed Asner. Of course, most of us know Ed Asner as Lou Grant from The Mary Tyler Moore Show as well as the dramatic series Lou Grant that followed. But as Matt told us on this episode, Ed Asner was generational. To some, it was his seventies and eighties television work that made an impact. To others, it might be his work (and his voice) from a host of animated series in the 90s from Batman or Superman or Spider Man. Some know him as Santa in the Christmas classic Elf. Others know him as Carl Fredricksen in Pixar's Up. Still others know him as the bad guy from the sixties film They Call Me Mr.Tibbs and even others from mini-series like Roots and Rich Man, Poor Man. Regardless of how you know the gruff but lovable actor, Ed Asner was known as a consummate professional, head of the Screen Actors Guild, tireless activist for a variety of causes, and Matt tells us all about them on the latest episode. We also get to hear about Gavin MacLeod's bubble gum obsession, “Uncle” Ted Knight, The Compass Players who Ed was a member of that birthed Second City, Paul Newman & Fort Apache The Bronx, death threats as well as family LA haunts like Art's Deli, Madam Wong's West and The Ed Asner Family Center. The Center promotes self-confidence, balance and wellness in differently-abled individuals and their families. And it's all next on the Rarified Heir Podcast. Take a listen. Oh Mr. Grant!

This week is all about superstition! Lou sends a chain letter to everyone in the WJM office, and Mary is tempted to trash the thing and break the chain. Lou, however, guilts her into keeping up with it. Through this, she has the great misfortune of being reconnected with a man from hers - and Rhoda's - past: Armand Linton! Through Mr. Linton's heinous codependence, we discuss bad dates, the many fish (and 14 billion pounds of trash) in the sea, the do's and don'ts of dating etiquette, and much more. This week, Mary decides it's time to go back to school! Frustrated by her lack of certain skill sets at WJM, she enrolls in a television journalism class to broaden her abilities. Along the way she may or may not catch the eye of her teacher, too. This week sees an interesting change of events as Mary is offered a new job at another network producing a women's talk show. The new job means more money, her own office, an assistant ... and she doesn't want any of it. The main reason? She can't stand the idea of saying goodbye to her WJM family.  As we look at Mary's indecisiveness about taking the new job, we discuss the importance of demanding fair pay as women, Phyllis's pragmatism, and the pejorative language of referring to women as girls. IMDb's synopsis for this week's episode is grossly misleading: Mary must deal with the amorous advances of WJM's obnoxious, and very young, new cameraman. Well, those "amorous advances" are really workplace sexual harassment. We dig pretty deep into this one, while discussing our own experience with sexual harassment and assault, at work and elsewhere. It's heavy, with clips from the episode that were truly shocking to both of us, in spite of their happy-go-lucky 1970's charm. So please, be aware, that this episode may contain triggers for survivors of sexual assault. This week, WJM's on the hunt for a new sportscaster just as luckless former pro-football player Frank Carelli (John Schuck) comes to town. An old friend of Lou's, Mary pushes Frank to audition, despite having no aptitude for broadcasting. In the end, he finds his purpose in the unlikeliest of places that seems the perfect fit. We discuss how careers used to define an entire generation of men, how we now look to our careers to find deeper meaning and satisfaction in life, and the shifting nature of our own purpose in what we do and how we do it.
