My guest today has done it all. He's gone from cinematography on small-budget indie films to $200 million-plus projects which is literally goals for many in this line of business. Director and cinematographer, Shane Hurlbut's thirty-plus experience and success as a storyteller is categorically innovative to the craft and inspiring for other filmmakers.Shane's latest film Love Hard is set for digital release via Netflix this November. This romantic comedy is about a young woman in Los Angeles who falls for a man on a dating app and travels to his East Coast hometown to surprise him for Christmas but discovers that she's been catfished. Her crush actually does live in the same town, and the guy who duped her offers to set them up if she pretends to be his girlfriend for the holidays. He's an esteemed member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the American Society of Cinematographers. The ASC recognized Shane's work very early on in his carrier from his film The Rat Pack and he was one of their youngest cinematographer nominees. Shane Co-founded the Hurlbut Academy alongside his wife and business partner, Lydia Hurlbut. Their platform offers professional online filmmaking education and mentoring materials, curated by other filmmakers. This interactive library has collaborated with filmmakers to develop about 50 Courses, 400+ Lessons, and 700+ hours of instruction videos. Some of the top projects he's worked on include Drumline, We Are Marshall, Terminator Salvation, Act Of Valor, and Game Of Thrones. The highly acclaimed HBO series, Game of Thrones was hailed for its spectacular cinematography. Outstanding, if you will. In 2012, Shane served as director of photography for their Game of Thrones: You Win or You Die - Inside the HBO Series that was an interview for major cast and crew members. Wherein, characters, families, kingdoms, and plots were explained with an in-depth look at season one. And what viewers could expect from season two. Some of Shane's work includes NetFlix's Rim of The World, Holidate, There Is No Place Like Home, Fathers, and Daughters, the pilot episode for SyFy's Resident Alien, and Disney+ original film Safety.Safety was inspired by the true story of Ray-Ray McElrathbey, the film follows a freshman football player for Clemson University who secretly raised his younger brother on campus after his home life became too unsteady. His passion for filmmaking goes back to his childhood.  Like the cool kid he still is, Shane did morning announcements at our high school and DJ for a local radio station. As you can imagine, he started doing dances, proms, and homecoming across the local upstate New York area. He earned part of his education at a small community college where he fell in love with radio, TV production, and so forth. A scholarship to study film at Emerson College in Boston sealed the deal for Shane. In 2002, Shane's box office hit film, Drumline became a major splash. Nick Cannon stars as a young drummer who enters the fictional Atlanta A&T University and bumps heads with the leader of his new school's drum section. A fish-out-of-water comedy about a talented street drummer from Harlem who enrolls in a Southern university, expecting to lead its marching band's drumline to victory. He initially flounders in his new world, before realizing that it takes more than talent to reach the top. Lots of knowledge bombs from Shane in this conversation, You don't want to miss out. Enjoy my chat with Shane Hurlbut.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bulletproof-screenwriting-podcast--2881148/support.

"We Are Marshall" is a gripping and emotional film that depicts the true story of a football team's struggle to rebuild their program in the aftermath of a devastating plane crash that claimed the lives of all the players, several coaches, boosters, and other members of the community. This heart-wrenching tale showcases the unwavering determination and indomitable spirit of the team, their families, and the entire community as they come together to pick up the pieces and rebuild their shattered lives. I highly recommend this movie, as it is not only a powerful tribute to the human spirit but also a testament to the power of teamwork and perseverance in the face of unimaginable tragedy. Here are the social media links:- Twitch: GervaisDemon- Instagram: Steven Gervais (@gervaisdemon)- TikTok: Steven Gervais (@gervaisdemon)- YouTube: TheGervaisPodcast- https://discord.gg/FwsTy839PB- Twitch: ShyninsWorld

Jerry Tipton knows where all the bones are buried when it comes to University of Kentucky basketball after covering the Wildcats for 41 years. The Hall of Fame writer takes us courtside for the Dream Game with Louisville in 1983 and the legendary Duke game (uh, Laettner) in ‘92. He tells what season stands out more than any other and why, and what he admired about Cawood Ledford as an announcer. Hear how Rick Pitino handled the spotlight, what made Jamal Mashburn a special player, and why a healthy Sam Bowie lingers in memory. Jerry reveals the nickname Joe Hall gave him and recounts their philosophical discussion about the eternal fate of sportwriters. And he explains the expectations of Kentucky fans, how he coped with the relentless beat, and what bowling – yes, bowling – taught him about journalism. Tipton served as the Kentucky basketball beat reporter for the Lexington Herald-Leader from 1981 until his retirement in July 2022. In that time, he covered three national championship teams ('96, '98, '12), nine Final Four teams, six head coaches -- Joe Hall, Eddie Sutton, Rick Pitino, Tubby Smith, Billy Gillispie, John Calipari – and more than 1,200 games played by the Wildcats. He also covered the university's football team for six years before turning exclusively to basketball in 1987. A Lexington website once listed the Top 100 Most Influential People in University of Kentucky Sports History and ranked Tipton at No. 74. He has been enshrined in the U.S. Basketball Writers Hall of Fame, the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame, and the Marshall University School of Journalism and Mass Communication Hall of Fame. He was the 2018 winner of the Tom Hammond Kentucky Sports Media Award. Mike Johnson, former Herald-Leader sports editor who hired Tipton, told that paper: “I spent 46 years in the news business. Jerry is simply the best beat reporter I've ever seen. Not sports reporter, beat reporter.” Tipton also worked eight years for the Huntington (W.Va.) Herald-Dispatch from 1973-81. There, he was the beat reporter on Marshall University basketball for two seasons, covered Ohio and West Virginia high school sports, and wrote a Sunday column about bowling. The native of Hamtramck, Michigan earned a journalism degree from Marshall University after first studying math in college. Tipton was a sophomore when the Marshall plane crash killed much of the Thundering Herd football team, as memorialized in the movie “We Are Marshall.” Jerry didn't learn that his roommate, a manager for the team, was alive until three days later. “Jerry Tipton has been synonymous with Kentucky basketball for 40 years and that should be applauded,” John Calipari told the Herald-Leader. “He's never been afraid to ask tough questions, even when I might not have liked it. But his dedication to the Lexington community and unwavering work ethic has resulted in a Hall of Fame career. I wish him nothing but the best in his retirement.” Learn more about your ad choices. Learning to be a leader and a well-rounded filmmaker are certainly two things that will help you stand out as an editor.A big part of being an editor is having good leadership skills in order to motivate and enable others to contribute towards the success of a production. Also being more knowledgeable of other subjects like cinematography, screenwriting, directing, music composition, or sound design can help you communicate more effectively with other creatives and lead to a long-lasting, successful career. As Roger Nygard, ACE said in a previous episode of the podcast - "Don't be an editor who cuts films, be a filmmaker who edits."My guest on episode 29 is director of photography Shane Hurlbut, ASC (THE RIM OF THE WORLD, TERMINATOR: SALVATION, WE ARE MARSHALL, NEED FOR SPEED) and he  shares advice on how you can become a better leader and also talks about his role as an educator through various online platforms including the Filmmakers Academy which he started last year.I'm also excited to share that I have joined the Filmmakers Academy as their editing mentor, and it's been great working with their team and the other mentors, and creating courses about the craft of editing so make sure to check it out today! Some of the topics Shane and I will be discussing on the show today include the importance of developing resilience to thrive in this industry, the future of cinematography, overcoming challenges when trying to break into feature films, how to shine a spotlight on yourself and stand out from others, choosing the right projects to work on, the importance of having a significant other that supports your career goals, and we'll hear all about the Filmmakers Academy!CLICK HERE to join the Hollywood Editing Mentor community!SUBSCRIBE and leave a 5-star review on Apple Podcasts!Original Music: "Apollo's Haze" and "Do You Want" by JesusdapnkFacebook: www.fb.com/jesusdapnkSoundcloud: www.soundcloud.com/jesusdapnkInstagram: @jesusdapnk

He initially flounders in his new world, before realizing that it takes more than talent to reach the top.Enjoy my entertaining conversation with Shane Hurlbut.

467 days. That's how long it had been since our last family reunion, the last game with the Banc at full capacity. Since March 2020, the world has been turned upside down: A global pandemic, changes in all our lives, and, unfortunately, many who are no longer with us. Yet, there we all were, after 467 days, back at Christmas Tree Lane, back in the stands at the Banc, and back watching our club.  Unfortunately, despite the full-throated support of the 3252 like we've rarely heard it, and the full house joining them, LAFC couldn't hold a lead yet again, and dropped two points at home, playing to a 1-1 draw against the Houston Dynamo. Cifu put us on top, off a beautiful corner from Carlos Vela. Just 8 minutes later, however, a series of magic acts from Maxi Urruti and Fafa Picault levels the match at one. Despite far more chances, far more shots, and far more possession, and handily outplaying our opponent yet again, it's just one point at home yet again.  It's Father's Day here at Defenders, and we absolutely want to wish all the dads out there the happiest of days. Also on this episode, we look back on the epic tailgate before the match, the incredible Bob Marley tifo, Ziggy Marley as honorary falconer, and LAFC and MLS celebrating Juneteenth with beautiful uniforms, especially the keeper kit! On this episode, hear one of the longer Rants with Filly that we've heard! We reminisce fondly about Open Cup wins of seasons past, we celebrate two new countries that can be added to Defenders nation, and we highlight the relative successes of our clubs in Euro 2020. Why was Filly wearing a “We Are Marshall” t-shirt? Did Scarf mention Tom Brady on this week's episode? And which new sponsor could the Defenders really use a relationship with? You'll have to listen to all of Episode 150 to find out! Episode 150. Wow. It seems like just yesterday we were celebrating our 100th, and here we are, at 150. We are so grateful to all of Defenders Nation for your incredible support, and we can't wait to celebrate 200 with you soon!

The podcast that helps you become the best version of...you.   This week on the Game of Life Podcast we have Jack Lengyel  . Now you might be wondering, who is Jack Lengyel? - if I said we had Matthew McConaughey on the podcast would you know who that is?  We basically do, the real life version of the the head football coach for Marshall University (McConaughey's We Are Marshall movie) Jack took over the program as the head football coach after the devastating Southern Airways Flight 932 crashed into a hill just short of it's destination killing all 75 people on board. The plane was carrying 37 members of the Marshall University Thundering Herd football team, nine members of the coaching staff, 25 boosters, and four flight crew members. The accident is the deadliest tragedy affecting any sports team in U.S. history. And Jack had the task of rebuilding not only the football team, but an entire community struck by devastation.    Jack goes in depth today on what it was like transforming tragedy into hope, building a football team that had absolutely no players (taking walk on, baseball players, and literally hippies- you'll love that story!)    Jack's story is one of absolute inspiration. In times where Jack could have succumbed to the treacherous rebuilding road, to the adversities that struck daily along the way, to an entire community putting the weight of their existence on his shoulders, Jack rose above it all and brought the town of Huntington, West VA together as one. I'm serious, this conversation gave me goosebumps throughout - it's one of the most tragic/inspirational stories you will ever here.  Get ready.   -------------------------------------------------------------------   SPONSOR: AMPLE-- Before we do through, I want to tell you about what I eat every single day for lunch. I'm an absolute health nut (but not in a crazy kale, lettuce, everything green kind of way) I want my healthy food to taste good. Really good. Book I'm reading - Essentialism by Greg McKeown The Way of the Essentialist isn’t about getting more done in less time. It’s about getting only the right things done. It is not a time management strategy, or a productivity technique. It is a systematic discipline for discerning what is absolutely essential, then eliminating everything that is not, so we can make the highest possible contribution towards the things that really matter.  https://itunes.apple.com/us/audiobook/essentialism-the-disciplined-pursuit-of-less-unabridged/id839192902   2. Health product Im using -  Ashwaganda - https://authoritynutrition.com/12-proven-ashwagandha-benefits/   3. Basketball Insight -  In the UCLA gym this past week we had James Harden, Kyrie Irving, Carmelo Anthony, Jimmy Butler, Demar Derozan, over 20 nba players all together. Upwards of 1 billion dollars on the court playing pick up basketball in a gym on the top floor of a recreation center that has been around since John Wooden at UCLA.  I might just have to do a podcast on this Gym and the special aura it has - Kareem, Magic, Jordan, everyone who is anyone has come through the the mysterious gym.  Oh and Kanye West asked me to play pick up with him as well - let's just say he's not 7feet tall. Topics this show include: -The competition for "Best Non-Football Character", eventually won by Mama Boucher from The Waterboy in somewhat of a runaway performance (2:12) -"Best Backup", featuring a tight race between Willie Beamon from Any Given Sunday and Bobby Boucher from The Waterboy (5:21) -The comeback victory in "Best Specialist" for Nigel Gruff from The Replacements, despite Gruff trailing Vince Papale from Invincible who lost his early lead (6:54) -The stacked category of "Best Defender" and how Julius Campbell of Remember the Titans pulled out a win over Alvin Mack of The Program (9:14) -The incredibly-lopsided victory by Herman Boone of Remember the Titans for "Best Coach" (11:18) -The somewhat-unexpected victory by Shane Falco of The Replacements, and the disappointing performance by Jon Moxon of Varsity Blues, finishing in third behind Ronnie "Sunshine" Bass of Remember the Titans (13:45) -"Best Supporting Actor" going to Tim McGraw from Friday Night Lights, taking down Jon Favreau from Rudy (14:58) -The shocking victory of Matthew McConaughey from We Are Marshall as "Best Actor", with Cuba Gooding Jr. being left stunned in second place (15:51) -"Best Football Picture" going to Friday Night Lights with 51% of the vote in a shockingly one-sided victory over a stacked lineup (17:28)

This week we traveled to a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) called Wiley College, behind the Pine Curtain of East Texas.  There we found a United Methodist affiliated institution built on the hotbed of the civil rights movement, stretching even back to its very founding.  You may have heard about part of the struggle in Marshall, Texas for civil rights from the movie "We Are Marshall."  And you probably know about the courage of Black students and leaders in the 60s at Wiley College from the movie "The Great Debaters."  We discuss this history and hop over to a student-led voluntary chapel service.  We discuss the service, the music, the styles of worship encountered, and the sermon (delivered by the United Methodist chaplain at Wiley).CORRECTION:  Despite Joshua's confident ramblings about movies (even though he rarely watches them), "We Are Marshall" has absolutely nothing to do with Marshall, Texas, a high school football team (it's a University team) or the civil rights movement, really.  Joshua regrets the complete and utter BS about "We are Marshall" that he spouted, but is considering watching the movie for the first time as penance and encourages others to see it...Joshua doesn't understand football so it's no surprise to anyone that he totally f**ked up a reference to a football movie.  Sorry!Links to some of the clips used in this episode:Wiley College Gospel Choir https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GojKFBBv0bMWiley college A Capella Choir (To be young, gifted and black) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEfbBCBSnSE"The Real Great Debaters" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQDJZVO-f3g“Old Time Religion” from “A day in the life of Wiley College” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tllK2w-qtJs I Thank You Jesus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7M3FvIt5qh4There is a Balm in Gilead https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-NjWPFooM0
