Lynne Stroy, Katie Walters, and Natasha Gray come straight to the podcast after watching an episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Released in 1970, the show depicts Mary Richards, a single woman in her 30s, living in Minneapolis, trying to make a life for herself. The storyline seems archaic now, as society in 2024 is vastly more opportunistic for women. In today's episode, we'll ask, “How far have we progressed from the country's dark history of racism and gender inequality?” As these three ladies, alongside host Joey Svendsen, reflect on this question, they also discuss the role that ignorance plays in matters of inequality and what grace looks like when offered to those who have more learning to do. What sort of humility and understanding should one tap into when reflecting on past generations or societies in other parts of the world today that err on very important matters. The four also get into theology on women's leadership in the Church and wrap up the conversation talking about the The Chosen Women's Conference, including a snippet of a woman's story whom, while attending, encountered freedom and forgiveness from a regretful decision she made a decade ago. We are seeing protests on college campuses all over the country. When you look at these protestors, do you see anti-semetism or pro-justice for the oppressed? Are they really pro-Hamas or are they pro-Palestinian . . . or don't you make a distinction? KSL Newsradio's Amanda Dickson asked her guests on A Woman's View. Her guests this week include Meghan Holbrook, Senior Vice President with Zions Bank, Ganel-Lyn Condie, popular speaker, host, author and mental health advocate, and Mary Richards, journliast for Church News.
The Supreme Court heard arguments this week on a case from Oregon. The city made it against the law to sleep outside. The homeless people went to court and argued that law was a violation of the 8th Amendment protection against cruel and unusual punishment. Her guests this week include Meghan Holbrook, Senior Vice President with Zions Bank, Ganel-Lyn Condie, popular speaker, host, author and mental health advocate, and Mary Richards, journliast for Church News.

Her guests this week include Meghan Holbrook, Senior Vice President with Zions Bank, Ganel-Lyn Condie, popular speaker, host, author and mental health advocate, and Mary Richards, journliast for Church News.
I've been wanting to try a new format for the show for a while so I took a stab at it this week with Janice Lagata of God Has Not Given. We talk about the fascinating true story of Mary Richards Bowser, a Union spy who was also enslaved. I would LOVE to know what you think about this format, mainly because if you all hate it, I don't want to keep trying to make it happen!
This month is the 182nd anniversary of the organization of the Relief Society of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When the Relief Society was organized on March 17, 1842, Emma Smith said, “We are going to do something extraordinary. … We expect extraordinary occasions and pressing calls.” To commemorate the purpose and founding of the Relief Society, a worldwide Relief Society devotional will be held on Sunday, March 17. Local ward and stake Relief Societies will gather to hear a message from President Russell M. Nelson and the Relief Society general presidency. The presidency — President Camille N. Johnson, Sister J. Anette Dennis and Sister Kristin M. Yee — joins this episode of the Church News podcast to talk more about the upcoming devotional and the mandate of the Relief Society, with Church News reporter Mary Richards as guest host. Send us a Text Message. In this episode of History Fix, I bring you the story of Mary Richards and Elizabeth Van Lew, two women who worked together to feed Confederate secrets to Union forces during the American Civil War. These daring women put it all on the line, demonstrating exceptional bravery and above average intellect to do what they thought was right. At a time when women were seen as docile, ignorant, and non-threatening, Mary and Elizabeth fooled them all, helping to bring down the Confederacy from the inside with very little to show for it. We saw research this week that showed women need more sleep than men - 8-10 hours. Men do not feel the negative effects of inadequate sleep like women do. KSL Newsradio's Amanda Dickson asked her guests about this on A Woman's View. Her guests this week include Dr. Tamara Sheffield, Medical Director for Immunization Programs at Intermountain Health, Dr. DeLaina Tonks, Executive Director of Mountain Heights Academy, and Mary Richards, reporter with Church News.
There was an interesting opinion piece in the Deseret News this week. It asked the question - is the answer to big tech concerns more STEM or humanities education? Maybe it's both. KSL Newsradio's Amanda Dickson asked her guests about this on A Woman's View. Her guests this week include Dr. Tamara Sheffield, Medical Director for Immunization Programs at Intermountain Health, Dr. DeLaina Tonks, Executive Director of Mountain Heights Academy, and Mary Richards, reporter for Church News.
What might yoga look like if it we weren't making shapes? As Mary Richards explains in Teach People, Not Poses, the purpose of practice is self-inquiry, so one way to start is by getting more familiar with physical form, instead of contorting to follow instructions.Mary's approach is down-to-earth, yet shaped by decades of study. A self-described “anatomy nerd”, she's also guided by philosophy, having first encountered yoga via the Bhagavad Gītā as a teenager. Among other topics, our conversation explores:* The extent to which everyone's body is different* How a fixation on postural alignment causes injury* Why many modern classes teach unhelpful methods* Which specific āsanas might be worth abandoning* Whether one-to-one teaching makes most sense* How physical practice unwinds mental issues* What it means to be the “Sith Lord of Yoga”Mary's book is published by Shambhala, and she's offering a webinar via Yogacampus (on January 26) that shares some techniques for getting grounded in gravity...I like how Mary call herself a facilitator. I'm doing more facilitation too – in the form of a men's group that starts on Sunday, and a philosophy immersion in February. If you enjoy the conversation, and would like to fuel more, please consider subscribing or buy me a coffee...
