Susan and Sharon continue their conversation with legendary 80s TV Lady -- and The Facts of Life writer/producer -- Margie Peters! In Part 2, the conversation turns to the challenges of making comedy out of date rape and toxic masculinity; “comedy sparring” in the Different World writer's room with Debbie Allen, Thad Mumford and Susan Fales-Hill; the creative opportunities for “women of a certain age”; and the lasting impact of the cruel moniker “The FATS of Life”. Margie Peters has written and produced over 140 hours of television, including The Love Boat, Valerie, One Day at a Time and A Different World. This week on It Was a Thing on TV here's what we offer in our next-to-last drop at Place to be Nation.   First, it took over 500 episodes, but we are finally talking about what many consider to be the worst television show of all-time.  A man's deceased mother gets reincarnated into a 1928 automobile, communicating with her son through the radio.  That's the premise.  Jerry Van Dyke passed up being Gilligan for this.  If all the above isn't unbelieveable enough, one of the world's biggest entertainers did a cover version of the theme song.   Then, we have seen this time and time again--a network reboots a series which ran for a considerable amount of time, only for it to flop badly.  This time, the victim is Family Affair, which The WB felt was worthy of rebooting over 30 years after the original show ended.  Against tough competition, this version quietly whimpered away after a half year.   Follow us at all our socials via our Linktree page at linktr.ee/itwasathingontv    Timestamps 0:31 - My Mother the Car (Episode 521) 51:51 -  Family Affair (2002) (Episode 522)

“Hootenanny A Go-Go,” aka “Once Upon A Coffee House” is a 1965 film based on an original story by and includes songs and music from our dad, Carl Yale (that's him with the sunglasses if you're on Libsyn). The film was shot in Miami at a breakneck pace in 1964 and was produced by Fred Berney. The idea came about as a result of Berney's visits to one of our father's (and uncle's) coffee houses in Miami – The Hootenanny – as the folk scene was coming to a crescendo at the advent of the British Invasion – and was intended as a vehicle for various folk artists at the time. Of note is the fact that the film was also the first-ever screen appearance by Joan Rivers. Here's our conversation with Fred – a look into the film itself, his life and career in media, and his take on Miami itself. Tread Perilously's Women First month looks back at one of the greatest sitcoms of all time: The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Unfortunately, they do it with an episode called "Son of 'But Seriously, Folks.'" After quitting Chuckles the Clown and bombing out with Mary some months earlier, Wes Callison returns to take a job in the newsroom. Mary is initially thrilled as she always thought there was more to him than writing jokes, but it soon becomes clear he's more fixated on her than bigger career horizons. Will Mary stop his increasingly creepy preoccupation with her or will it all end with comical results? Despite loving the series overall, Erik immediately sees why this is the lowest rated episode on IMDb. Justin finds one laugh during its runtime. The blame is put squarely at the feet of Jerry Van Dyke. Chuckles the Clown makes a surprising on-screen appearance. Justin recasts one person in Ordinary People. The prominence of the flat-fronted toupee in the 1970s gets examined. A surprising number of Marvel characters make their way to Minneapolis. Vince Van Patten is a man of many talents. The son of legendary actor Dick Van Patten got his start as a child, appearing in numerous commercials, as well as TV shows and movies such as Bonanza, Baywatch, The Six Million Dollar Man, Hell Night, and The Break. Despite being introduced to gambling at a young age by his father, Van Patten ultimately dedicated himself to tennis, and won the ATP Rookie of the Year award. In 1981, he even beat John McEnroe to win the Seiko World Super Tennis Tournament in Tokyo, reaching a peak of no. 26 in the world.  After his tennis career was over, Van Patten returned to Los Angeles to continue acting, as well play host to some of Hollywood's biggest home poker games. His experience with the game and his time in front of a camera made Van Patten a natural choice for the World Series of Poker in 1998, and when the World Poker Tour made its debut in 2002, he was hired alongside Mike Sexton as commentator. Van Patten is now sharing the duties with poker pro Tony Dunst, and is in the middle of his 18th season on tour.  Van Patten's most recent project is a gambling movie that he co-wrote and stars in called 7 Days To Vegas. The film focuses on a group of poker players who will bet on anyone and anything. As the prop bets get bigger and bigger, Van Patten's character agrees to attempt to walk from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, in under seven days, while wearing a suit. The film is available now on demand through Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, Vudu, and more.  Highlights from this interview include 600 drives to Vegas, selling toothpaste as a child actor, his slow start in tennis, fighting for a top ranking and beating John McEnroe, Dick Van Patten the smart gambling degenerate, learning poker at age 8, running three-card monte games in seventh grade, fake beards and mustaches, scraping up $5 of fountain change for gas money, his new movie 7 Days To Vegas, Hollywood home games with Jerry Van Dyke, John Huston, Ben Affleck, and Tobey Maguire, winning some teeth in a poker game, calling Scotty Nguyen's WSOP win, how he got the WPT gig, dodging the cigar murderers, a three-day poker session, a sketchy game on the Mexican border, bear encounters at Yosemite, and trips to the racetrack with Mel Brooks.

The time has finally come to review one of the most notorious television series in history: MY MOTHER THE CAR, a 1960s sitcom with the stupidest premise imaginable, and a Freudian nightmare that could only happen in the deepest, darkest subconscious of the typical suburban male. Yes, Jerry Van Dyke's mother is a car... and she will spank him. It's been called the worst tv show in history, but is it possible that MY MOTHER THE CAR was... CANCELED TOO SOON? Join film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold - and special guest Alonso Duralde (Linoleum Knife) - as they drink deeply of all 30 ill-conceived episodes of MY MOTHER THE CAR, the series they call "The HEAVEN'S GATE of Television." How bad could it possibly be? Guess what: it's worse. Ho, ho, ho! For the holiday season, Lyndsey revisits her VHS copy of the Olsen twins classic, To Grandmother's House We Go from Full House creator Jeff Franklin. The film stars Mary-Kate and Ashley (of course), with co-stars Cynthia Geary, J. Eddie Peck, Rhea Perlman, and Jerry Van Dyke. Topics include egg nog cocktails, the absence of likable characters, and a major ethical dilema that goes largely ignored. Trailers: The Little Princess, The Secret Garden, Black Beauty, and a lot of Dual Star productions.

Coach was a long running sitcom on ABC that starred Craig T. Nelson and Jerry Van Dyke. In April of 2015 NBC went forward with a 13-episode order of a Coach reboot written by the original creator Barry Kemp. The show would follow Craig T. Nelson's TV son Tim Fox as he becomes the head coach of the fictional Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology (PIST). Through some gentle persuasion the head coach decides to call upon his father Hayden Fox to join the team as the assistant head coach.   The pilot script sets up the situation fine, but lacks the comedy. This script relies heavily on Hayden Fox's over the top delivery of simple lines he was known for in the original series. For the other characters it seemed the script would have been punched up several times before being shot. The first episode was filmed in front of a live studio audience, and the end result received mixed reviews. While audiences always seem to enjoy the Hayden Fox character and Craig T. Nelson as an actor, the show it self was labeled as "dated." Lucky for Nelson he was paid for the entire 13-episodes, the other actors were only paid for the pilot. What do you think? Do you wish NBC moved forward with the new Coach series? Or are there other reboots you would rather watch?

Happy Holidays, WEE listeners! Let's ruin them by talking about this episode. Widely regarded as the worst Christmas episode, we're watching Season 18's "Kill Gil, Volumes 1 & 2," an episode that manages to include senseless violence, animal abuse, and tired gay jokes on top of its loose Christmas plot. But it's not all bad! This is also the debut episode of the Grumple. Ok, so it is all bad... We perform a deep psychoanalysis of said Grumple, dig into whether Gil works in large doses, and ponder why this episode was so intent on making jokes about Scottsdale, Arizona. Why does the show insist on beating gags to death, especially with Homer's aggressive whisper? Why can WEE not stop talking about Marge? And why aren't you spending your holiday watching "The Stand" miniseries from 1994? All that, plus, an extensive discussion about Jerry Van Dyke and the 1997 TGIF line-up, our hatred for leprechauns, and another of Dan's delightful and violent Simpsons stories from the late 90s. Enjoy our gift to you, our faithful listeners (and apologies to Al Jean, who apparently created "Teen Angel"...).  For more show notes, links to watch the episodes on Simpsons World, and more, check us out at www.weepodcast.com
