We got this kind of nifty sample of a Neopixel 'sheet,' which is uncut LED strips - the whole thing is flexible PCB material with a cuttable square pitch of 1 cm per pixel. it's arranged as a zigzag, so you can immediately use it as one strand of neopixel in a 12 x 24 arrangement. Or you could cut it into funky shapes and connect the data to data input between segments. the panel also requires 12VDC, but that's not too challenging; it could be useful when you need a flexible sheet in an unusual shape and don't want to piece together individual NeoPixel dots! This chonky neopixel tube is a treat with full, smooth color all the way around - but it's also a real pain to drive, given it requires 24V power. Or at least it would be if we didn't have this Sparkle Motion (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6100) board we are testing! With USB PD support, it's easy to plug the board into a USB C laptop power supply that can provide 20V at up to 5A - even though it's under 24V, we've found the LEDs are just as bright. Looks great, we're going to keep testing and get these boards ordered, hopefully before the year's end! We got our WLED-friend PCBs (https://blog.adafruit.com/2024/12/02/leftovers-layout-wled-board-revision-a-completed/) and are testing it with various LED grids. First, we tried out a 16x16 NeoPixel grid that runs on 5V. Since that worked well, we're now onto a much bigger 60 x 60 grid - that's 3,600 LEDs! These are some NeoPixel pebble (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6024) netting samples we're also testing at the same time; each one has 20 x 60 pixels and uses 12V power, so it's a good test of the DC pass-through for higher voltages. Since WLED has a limit of 2000 pixels per output, this demo uses the three output ports that are then 'merged' together in memory to make a single large grid. We have more to test soon: the onboard IR receiver, USB PD, I2S microphone, extra I/O pins, and I2C, so watch for those videos as they come together. This week we got our Metro RP2350 boards (https://blog.adafruit.com/2024/11/11/metro-rp2350-now-with-bigger-better-rp2350b/) back and after fixing the pin direction and rerouting (https://www.instagram.com/adafruit/p/DC2U7mdyf9W) the whole thing, it came up and pretty much works perfectly! Just one component needed a swap - we were able to test all GPIO, analog inputs, MicroSD slot, PSRAM, LEDs & NeoPixel, user button, I2C/SPI/UART, aaand power supplies. The 5V supply is great, we got a nice clean 5V out at 2A+ from 12V DC in. The last thing to check is the HSTX port, which gives us DVI access, and it works, thanks to this festive turtle demo! The TM1814 LEDs we've been looking at this week require an inverted NeoPixel-like signal. While it's not too hard to make a custom library to deal with the prefix bytes, the inversion is a little annoying since you'd have to rewrite a lot of assembly. So, for our level shifter board we designed, let's also add an inverter: It will use 5V power and logic, and we'd like a small SC70-5 package so we can keep the board as compact as possible. More! We got a set of weatherproof cafe lights with RGBW LEDs for a 'pure' white color light. However, they don't use the WS281x chipset for the control signal. Instead, it's TM1814, which is kind of similar but has a few key differences. One is you have to send an 8-byte 'global brightness' setting to start, and then you have to continuously send a signal over every 400ms, and to top it off, the signal is inverted! This week's EYE ON NPI looks miiiiiighty familiar with those of us who love our colorful lights, it's Würth Elektronik's RGB WL-ICLED Integrated Controller Within LED (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/w/wurth-electronics/wl-icled-integrated-controller-within-led). WE's take on the 'smart LED' has taken over the electronics industry over the past 15 years. These ubiquitous LEDs can save you time, pins, and cost by simplifying the addition of up to a couple-dozen colorful LEDs, especially when the PCB size is at a premium. Back in my day, if you wanted to add a lot of colorful LEDs to a design, you'd have to use a dedicated LED driver chip. That is, unless your microcontroller had tons of pins, and 10mA drive current - and even then there's a total current-draw limit for the chip package. We still stock some breakouts for these like the TLC5947 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1429) a 'chainable' SPI board that could drive 8 RGB LEDs and PWM them all for you, often with a set-able constant-current. There's still need for chips like this, but they're often kinda large, and they're not free, so using them was not a light matter. Then came the first - or close to the first - low cost chainable LED driver: the LPD8806 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/306). We wrote a library for this chip in 2011 (https://github.com/adafruit/LPD8806/commits/master/?after=1951478c2c2a8317feab9997cdfddba3728a245a+69), the way this chip worked is it could control two RGB LEDs per, with all PWM handled internally and you only needed 2 pins! This was inexpensive and worked great, but the chips were still a bit large, 14-SOICs. They were superseded by the WS2811 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1060) which came up with using a Manchester encoding (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchester_code) for transport over a single line. These used even less space, and only a single pin, with an SOIC-8 package. However, the real ingenuity is when folks realized they could put the chip INSIDE the LED: and thus was born what we call "NeoPixel" (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/result?s=N4IgTCBcDaIHYFMD2AHAlgDwQGxAXQF8g) a fully chainable smart LED that only uses one pin and no external components. Now all's been right in the world, with dozens of different shapes, configurations and sizes of 'WS2812-compatible' LEDs. But there was one thing missing: a reliable source of smart LEDs. And we should know because we use a lot of these chips: and we try to warn folks that low cost LEDs have differing LED color and brightnesses, are hard to solder and rework, and suffer high failure rates in the field. Worst of all, when one fails all the ones down the line also fail! Until today you just had to cross your fingers and hope that the reel you got was from a 'good batch'. That's why we were excited to see Würth Elektronik's RGB WL-ICLED in DigiKey's NPI list, because WE is known for high quality, reliable products. Unlike most NeoPixel compatibles, this datasheet specifies the LED brightnesses and spectra. It also has RoHS, REACh and Halogen compliance. Finally, you know you'll be getting consistent quality, where each LED solders just as well as last week's or last year's batch. The WL-ICLEDs are available in 4 sizes, including the common 5x5mm and 2x2mm. Würth Elektronik also designed a cool FeatherWing (https://github.com/WurthElektronik/FeatherWings/tree/main/ICLEDFeatherWing) with hundreds of the 2x2mm ICLEDs to demo how to display animations, text, and graphics. You can single-click to play and pause media, double-click to skip to the next track. If you long press, it'll mute the speaker's volume. The electronics are housed in our 3D printed snap fit enclosure that features a new design. The knob features a built-in LED diffuser with textured knurling on the outer edge. We used the filament swap technique to make a multi-material print so there's no need for a multi-extruder. Just use white PLA filament to diffuse the LEDs. ATMakers emailed and asked if we'd make a Trinkey (https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=trinkey) with a TRRS jack (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5764) on the end, for making customizable HID devices that use simple 3.5mm audio jack connectors. ideally something that will make AT - Accessibility Technology - projects EZ to build and maintain. here's our take on it, what's interesting is each pin of the jack - including the two switches for tip and ring1 - connect to GPIO / analog inputs on the SAMD21. there's no pre-defined VCC or GND because different switch and joystick makers have different configurations and we might want to change around what pins are power, ground, pullups, etc! this board will be great for use with CircuitPython to make any sort of AT switch or potentiometer interface super fast, to demo it we've written up a quick CPy sketch that will listen for two switches, and when they're pressed, blink the NeoPixel and emit keypresses as if its a keyboard. code is in the PR for this board (https://github.com/adafruit/circuitpython/pull/9190#issuecomment-2067764251) since we have great HID support it could also be a mouse or joystick device and it will work with any computer/tablet/console with a USB port. The ESP32-C6 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5672) is Espressif's first Wi-Fi 6 SoC integrating 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5 (LE) and the 802.15.4 protocol. It brings the goodness you know from the low-cost C3 series (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5337) and improves it with Zigbee/802.15.4 at 2.4Ghz. That means it could make for great Matter (https://csa-iot.org/all-solutions/matter/) development hardware! We took our Feather ESP32-S2 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5000) and swapped out the 'S2 for a C6. Plus some re-routing and here's what we've got: a C6 Feather with lots of GPIO, lipoly charging and monitoring with the MAX17048, (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5580) NeoPixel, I2C Stemma QT port, and a second low-quiescent LDO for disabling the I2C and NeoPixel when we want ultra-low power usage. We also tossed a BME280 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2652) on there, so you could use it immediately as a low power temp/hum/pressure sensor. Now it's time to do the bringup - we like to blink LEDs, toggle pins, and also check that NeoPixels glow up. Good news: so far everything works! This guide uses a Feather ESP32 V2 loaded with the free, open source WLED software. Buy on the Adafruit Website: https://www.adafruit.com/product/5400 WLED runs on the Feather, using WiFi to allow you to control the lights with your phone, PC, or any wifi-enabled device. This is a lot of fun, and will make for a beautiful piece of light art in your space that's easy to control and program with your phone. But this guide goes further! WLED interfaces seamlessly with LED Fx, an open-source program that runs on your computer to capture and analyze sound, either from your music player or from your computer's microphone. It takes the sound and translates it into light effects, so your lights can run sound-reactive animations over WiFi without needing to add a physical microphone. WLED has sound reactive effects. Why not just use WLED? WLED does have sound reactive modes available, but the sound needs to be run and processed through a small microphone soldered to your ESP32. These microphones don't have the same quality pickup as the one on your PC, and may not be physically located where the sound is optimal. The effects don't have as many controls, and tend to be a little "blinky". LED Fx gives you great sound input and a lot of solid animations with controls that allow you to really dial in your animations. It's just as easy to use but I've gotten much nicer results with LED Fx. we're often working with 'true analog' LED strips (https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=analog+LED), that have 1-3 channels of RGB or White LEDs. and controlling these takes a bit of wiring since they almost always need 12VDC and driver FETs. to make our lives easier, and maybe even some customer's too, here's a STEMMA board (https://www.adafruit.com/product/3893) that can convert a NeoPixel signal using a WS2811F to three AO3406 N-channel FETs (https://www.digikey.com/short/438tn2hb) that are high efficiency and can sink a chunk of current. there's a 3-channel 74LVC3G14 (https://www.digikey.com/short/tqq3tm3m) inverter in between to convert the WS2811 output signal which is open drain, to the NFETs. 5 terminal block ports allow for easy wiring of the +12V, ground, and RGB common-anode channels. unfortunately the WS2811 does not support 4-channel so this won't work for RGBW strips...but there's a lot of times folks need 1 or 3 channels! OK, after a long hiatus, the ESP32 Itsy Bitsy prototypes are built and ready for testing! We first designed this board Feb 20, 2020 - and it's been waiting oh so patiently for its turn. The ESP32 Pico module packs 8 MB of flash and 2 MB of PSRAM. Despite its small size this board can handle fairly complex programs. This board is very small but has lots of pins, with a USB-serial converter, NeoPixel, reset and user button, Stemma QT connector, and a 5V-logic output specifically for driving NeoPixels. to do my final 'all in one' test we're reading temperature and humidity from an I2C sensor, sending it to IO, then reading back the onboard NeoPixel color from the dashboard. It's an excellent way to make sure the whole thing is working the way we like. Last up, we'll do a low-power test, and then it'll be ready for fabrication! For our NeoPixel signal to analog LED converter design, we need to convert 3 open drain PWM outputs to drive N-channel sinking MOSFETS. To do that we'll need to invert the signal - but we don't have a ton of space. So let's source a triple-NOT gate that has push-pull output, and can run from 3 or 5V logic. Coming soon - this is a quick sketch we did of an RGB TTL driver PCB to help us try out all our funky-shaped displays. We reused most of the Matrix Portal S3 PCB, but instead of the RGB matrix connector, we popped on a 40-pin FPC. 16 GPIO go to the RGB pins, then there are 4 control pins for HSYNC, VSYNC, DE, and PIXCLK. Three more pins for touch screen I2C and IRQ. Then a NeoPixel, two buttons, and 3 SPI pins for configuring the screen controller, and we're almost out of pins! An I2C GPIO expander could save us a couple pins at the expense of more complex drivers, but for now, we will make it easy to get the displays running, and we can play silly pin games later. We were tasked with fixing an older tester for our 5x6 ortho-key break-apart board https://www.adafruit.com/product/5157 . This board has many test points to verify because we have 30 total keys, and each key has the switch contacts and the Neopixel. Pressing down to touch all the Pogo pads simultaneously can be a challenge! We use both standoffs for the mounting hole alignment and a big laser-cut plastic plate that provides even pressure. When all the LEDs go green, you know it's all working! Next, we hand this back to the test-prep leads, which will be put back into production.
