Tyler Hoffman returns to the show to discuss diagnostics and observability data in embedded systems. We catch up on his life after startup acquisition, explore the hows and whys of keeping product data separate from operational data, and consider the realities of fleet management at scale.  Tyler is the co-founder of Memfault. Memfault was acquired by Nordic Semiconductor about a year ago. While Nordic has nRF Cloud as a smaller scale solution for Nordic devices (~100 devices), Memfault will continue to maintain support for non-Nordic platforms as well. During the discussion, Tyler advocates for a "device-in-control" philosophy, emphasizing that edge devices should retain the intelligence to manage their own firmware updates and telemetry. We also discuss the practical constraints of remote fleet debugging, outlining why tools built for high-bandwidth web infrastructure will quickly bankrupt an IoT company, and identifying exactly when a project is too low-bandwidth, or too small, to justify an external observability platform. Christopher shares his recent experiences with Memfault which leads to a discussion of chunks, flash memory buffers and MDS. The Memfault Diagnostic Service (MDS) is a standardized way for BLE devices to send the chunk payloads to a gateway device (mobile phone) which can then forward the data to the Memfault cloud. If you want a deep dive into the reasoning around starting Memfault, Tyler was on Embedded.fm episodes 390: Irresponsible At the Time and 395: I Can No Longer Play Ping Pong. Reaching back into the archives, Elecia, Tyler, and Phillip Johnston were on the Memfault Coredump Sessions podcast, a special crosspost with Embedded.fm, episode 451: From Concept to Launch  You can also find technical deep dives on Memfault's Interrupt blog. "What we do makes a difference and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make."  – Dr. Jane Goodall, Reason for Hope: A Spiritual Journey. Transcript

Why do so many IoT and embedded projects become harder to deliver as they scale, even when the technology itself works? As IoT and embedded projects scale, the challenge shifts from simply developing the technology… to delivering outcomes reliably. Not just technically, but commercially and operationally too. In this episode of The IoT Podcast, Jake Gilbert sits down with Dominik Kujawski, Co-CEO & CRO at needCode, to explore how that shift is changing the way connected products are being built, delivered, and supported across the IoT industry. Drawing on their experience across wireless connectivity, ultra wideband, BLE, and embedded systems, the conversation focuses on the realities that start to emerge as projects become more complex - from integration challenges and certification requirements, to reducing iteration cycles, avoiding costly rework, and aligning technical delivery with commercial expectations. Rather than approaching projects as isolated technical tasks, Dominik explains why more companies are moving towards a solution-first mindset starting with the client problem, understanding the operational context, and taking greater ownership of the end result. Jake and Dominik also discuss:

In this episode of Confessions of Supply Chain Executives, host Chris Walton sits down with Amir Khoshniyati, Vice President at Wiliot, to break down the five supply chain trends that will actually matter in 2026. Every January, supply chain executives make bold predictions. AI will transform everything. Automation will solve labor shortages. Real-time visibility will finally arrive. And by December, most of those predictions turn out to be wildly optimistic or completely off-target. But 2026 may be different. Retail is approaching a true convergence point where Physical AI, real-time item location, generative and agentic AI, grocery e-commerce acceleration, and mounting regulatory pressure are all colliding at the same time. The result is a potential restructuring of how supply chains operate. Drawing from his work with some of the world's largest retailers, including Walmart, Amir shares what is actually being deployed versus what is still sitting in PowerPoint decks, and why the real driver of change is not hype. It is quantified pain. This episode examines whether we are at a true inflection point and what executives must prioritize right now to avoid falling behind. Key Topics Covered: • Why 2026 could be a true supply chain inflection point • What “Physical AI” really means and how it differs from traditional IoT • Where adoption stands today, pilot purgatory or scaled deployment • The BLE vs. RFID debate and why it may not be either or • Why real-time item location is moving from nice to have to mission critical • How generative and agentic AI intersect with physical supply chain data • When AI agents may begin making autonomous inventory and fulfillment decisions • Why grocery e-commerce is a forcing function for real-time visibility • How perishability, waste, and margin pressure are reshaping tracking needs • The impact of FSMA and growing traceability mandates • Whether compliance will become a competitive advantage • The uncomfortable truth retailers may not want to hear about these trends If you are a supply chain executive with limited budget and bandwidth, this episode delivers a clear message. Start with your pain, quantify it, and build your visibility foundation first.

In this episode, we sit down with Milica Kostic, an embedded software architect from Belgrade, Serbia, to discuss her journey from C/C++ to Rust and what it means for embedded development. Milica shares her experience adopting Rust in production environments, starting with an embedded Linux project using a microservice architecture that allowed for clean isolation of Rust code.We explore the practical realities of learning Rust as an experienced C/C++ developer - yes, there's a learning curve, and yes, the compiler will slap you on the wrist frequently. But Milica explains how the development experience, with cargo as a package manager and built-in tooling for testing and static analysis, makes the journey worthwhile. She's candid about where Rust shines (embedded Linux, greenfield projects) and where challenges remain (microcontroller support, IDE tooling, vendor backing). The conversation touches on the bigger question facing our industry: with memory safety becoming critical in our connected world, what role should Rust play in new embedded projects? While Milica takes a measured stance - acknowledging that C and C++ aren't going anywhere - she's clearly excited about Rust's potential, especially in safety-critical domains like medical devices. Whether you're Rust-curious or still skeptical, this episode offers a grounded perspective from someone who's actually shipped production code in Rust.Key Topics[02:30] Milica's background in embedded systems and her journey from electrical engineering to embedded software development, with focus on safety-critical industries like medical devices[04:15] The path to adopting Rust: from first hearing about it in 2020 to finding a client project willing to embrace it, and the importance of having experienced Rust developers on the team[07:00] Choosing the right project for Rust adoption: embedded Linux with microservice architecture as an ideal starting point, avoiding complex C/C++ interoperability[10:45] The learning curve: getting used to the Rust compiler's strictness, discovering the ecosystem of unofficial but widely-used crates, and how learning Rust improved C++ skills[14:20] What makes Rust development pleasant: cargo as package manager, built-in testing and static analysis, cleaner code organization with modules, and writing unit tests alongside source code[17:30] Current limitations: lack of official vendor support for microcontrollers, community-driven development, potential gaps in certified stacks (like BLE), and IDE support challenges[20:15] Interfacing Rust with C and C++: C binding works well, C++ has limitations with inheritance and templates, and the safety considerations when using unsafe code blocks[25:40] Integrating Rust into legacy projects: when it makes sense (isolated new features requiring memory safety) and when it doesn't (just for experimentation), plus maintenance considerations[30:00] The big question: Is it irresponsible not to use Rust for new projects? Discussion of Philip Marcraff's strong stance and Milica's more nuanced view considering team knowledge, existing tooling, and project context[33:45] The influence between languages: how C++ is learning from Rust's memory safety features, and why the borrow checker is harder to retrofit than basic safety improvements[36:20] Rust in operating systems: adoption in the Linux kernel and Microsoft Windows, and major tech companies pushing C++/Rust interoperability forward[39:00] The future of Rust in embedded: Milica's view that C, C++, and Rust will coexist, each with their own use cases, advantages, and trade-offsNotable Quotes"Learning Rust has also made me a better C++ developer as well. Once you get used to those rules, you apply them in C++ as well." — Milica"Just like writing Rust code is pleasant. It flows much nicer than or easier than it would with C++, for example. The way you organize your code, in my opinion, is also cleaner." — Milica"If you are developing Rust for embedded systems on microcontrollers, you need to be aware that there is no official vendor support. Everything currently is open source and driven by the community." — Milica"You definitely do not lose benefits of using Rust for the rest of your codebase when using a C library. That C library is isolated, and if there are some memory issues, then you know where to look." — Milica"I think most of the benefits come from starting with Rust in the first place. So having a clean slate, starting a new product, new project with Rust. That's where you see the most benefits." — MilicaResources MentionedEmbassy - An async framework used in embedded Rust projects, mentioned as a good starting point for greenfield embedded developmentZephyr RTOS - Real-time operating system that is working on official Rust integration, though not fully there yetRust Rover - JetBrains' official IDE for Rust development, released about a year and a half ago, though with some limitations for embedded developmentZed - A new IDE written completely in Rust, mentioned as an emerging option for Rust developmentSlint - A Rust-based GUI framework for embedded systemsEmbedded Online Conference - Conference where Milica gave a talk on Rust for embedded systems - link to her presentation in show notesMilica's LinkedInMilica's talk on Rust at the Embedded Online Conference You can find Jeff at https://jeffgable.com.You can find Luca at https://luca.engineer.Want to join the agile Embedded Slack? WARNING: ADULT CONTENT This week, Jayna's breaking down the most over-hyped and misunderstood trend in the bedroom. She clarifies what squirting really is, how the female body actually works, and why the porn industry has completely distorted our understanding of it with camera tricks, bladder hacks, and pressure-filled expectations that don't belong in real bedrooms. Most importantly, this episode is here to calm nerves, clear myths, and remind every woman that her body isn't "broken" if she hasn't squirted — it simply means she's a normal human being and not a paid performer with a gallon of Fiji water backstage. This one's fierce, informative, and full of "OHHH now that makes sense" moments. If you've ever wondered what's fact, what's fantasy, and what's pure internet delusion… Jayna's here to hand you the truth on a silver (waterproof) platter. Expect:

This week, we’re exploring some principles we can glean from these Christmas accounts to help us have courage as we face hard choices.
