Seid gespannt!
Send us a Text Message. As we uncork the tropical essence of Open Skies Sauvignon Blanc, our conversation takes flight, journeying from a surprising Target wine discovery to the whimsical possibility of porch life in California. We're not just discussing the zest of a good vintage, but also the cultural concoctions that have captivated us this week: I've been spellbound by the finale of Meg Cabot's Airhead trilogy, while Andrew's been swept up in the Electro Swing rhythm, all amidst speculations about whether our four-legged companion, Ren, could handle the buzz of a music festival.Crack open the complexities of everyday life with us as we explore the profound effects of small health habits, like nurturing a vibrant gut microbiome, and share personal insights on Seed's DS01 Daily Symbiotic. The conversation simmers as we vent our frustrations with the convoluted tax system, yearning for the simplicity that countries like Sweden bask in. We're peeling back the curtain on the balance—or imbalance—of power between government and corporations, particularly as we delve into the murky ethical waters surrounding Elon Musk's Neuralink, and the impact wealthy figures have on public policy. Join us for a stirring look at these dynamics, coupled with a hearty dose of skepticism towards ghost job listings and the veracity of government job creation.
In this episode: Listen to a conversation between Valerie Giglio and your host Vivienne Aerts as they talk about Valerie losing her voice because of a stroke, teaching herself how to sing again and being accepted at Berklee College of Music, all within two years. As a bonus, Valerie raises the curtains on how she creates very innovative music: electro-swing About Valerie Giglio: For Boston-based vocalist and electronic producer Valerie Giglio, it's all about bringing back that vintage sound and style and pairing it with electronic dance music. Originally starting her solo career singing jazz standards, Italian language songs, and unique renditions of hits from the 40s through the 80s, she transitioned to the Electro Swing genre in 2021 and has released several CDs to date. Giglio has been singing professionally for over two decades. She is a Voting Member of The Recording Academy (Grammys®), attended Berklee College of Music, and reinvented herself as an electronic artist with a retro swing and jazz edge. www.valeriegiglio.com Instagram / Facebook / YouTube About ViviTalks - Interviews with the Women Behind Typuhthâng. I, along with many commenters, found the explanation in Hell is Game Theory Folk Theorems somewhat unclear. I am re-explaining some of the ideas from that post here. Thanks to jessicata for writing a post on such an interesting topic. 1-shot prisoner's dilemma. In a 1-shot prisoner's dilemma, defecting is a dominant strategy. Because of this, (defect, defect) is the unique Nash equilibrium of this game. Which kind of sucks, since (cooperate, cooperate) would be better for both players. Nash equilibrium. Nash equilibrium is just a mathematical formalism. Consider a strategy profile, which is a list of which strategy each player chooses. A strategy profile is a Nash equilibrium if no player is strictly better off switching their strategy, assuming everyone else continues to play their strategy listed in the strategy profile. Notably, Nash equilibrium says nothing about: What if two or more people team up and deviate from the Nash equilibrium strategy profile? What if people aren't behaving fully rationally? (see bounded rationality) Nash equilibria may or may not have predictive power. It depends on the game. Much work in game theory involves refining equilibrium concepts to have more predictive power in different situations (e.g. subgame perfect equilibrium to handle credible threats, trembling hand equilibrium to handle human error). n-shot prisoner's dilemma. OK, now what if people agree to repeat a prisoner's dilemma n=10 times? Maybe the repeated rounds can build trust among players, causing cooperation to happen? Unfortunately, the theory says that (defect, defect) is still the unique Nash equilibrium. Why? Because in the 10th game, players don't care about their reputation anymore. They just want to maximize payoff, so they may as well defect. So, it is common knowledge that each player will defect in the 10th game. Now moving to the 9th game, players know their reputation doesn't matter in this game, because everyone is going to defect in the 10th game anyway. So, it is common knowledge that each player will defect in the 9th game. And so on. This thought process is called backwards induction. This shows that the unique Nash equilibrium is still (defect, defect), even if the number of repetitions is large. Why might this lack predictive power? In the real world there might be uncertainty about the number of repetitions. (again) people might not behave fully rationally—backwards induction is kind of complicated! Probably the simplest way to model “uncertainty about the number of repetitions” is by assuming an infinite number of repetitions. infinitely repeated prisoner's dilemma. OK, now assume the prisoner's dilemma will be repeated forever. Turns out, now, there exists a Nash equilibrium which involves cooperation! Here is how it goes. Each player agrees to play cooperate, indefinitely. Whenever any player defects, the other player responds by defecting for the rest of all eternity (“punishment”). technical Q: Hold on a second. I thought Nash equilibrium was “static” in the sense that it just says: given that everybody is playing a Nash equilibrium strategy profile, if a single person deviates (while everyone else keeps playing according to the Nash equilibrium strategy profile), then they will not be better off from deviating. This stuff where players choose to punish other players in response to bad behavior seems like a stronger equilibrium concept not covered by Nash. A: Nope! A (pure) strategy profile is a list of strategies for each player. In a single prisoner's dilemma, this is just a choice of “cooperate” or “defect”. In a repeated prisoner's dilemma, this is much more complicated. A strategy is a complete contingency plan of what the player plans to...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Honestly I'm just here for the drama, published by electroswing on April 1, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. I'm a young twenty-something who got into EA a couple of years ago. Back then I was really into the whole "learning object-level facts about EA” thing. I'd religiously listen to the 80,000 Hours podcast, read in detail about different interventions, both neartermist and longtermist, and generally just try my darndest to improve my understanding of how to do good effectively. Key to this voracious consumption was of course the EA Forum. Now? Lmao. It started with the SBF saga. Boy was the EA forum entertaining. The whole front page was full of upset people wildly speculating. So many rumors to sift through, so many spicy arguments to follow. The best parts of any post could be found by scrolling to the very bottom and unfolding highly downvoted comments. So much entertainment. Like reality TV except about my ingroup specifically. Then, you know the meme. EA has had a scandal of the week TM ever since. Castle? Hilarious watching people who don't understand logistics butt heads with people who don't value optics and frugality. The weird Tegmark neonazi thing? Absolutely incredible watching the comments turn on him and then pull back. Time and Bloomberg articles and the ensuing "I can fix EA in one blog post" follow-ups? Delicious. Bostrom and the fascinating case of the use-mention distinction? Yikes bro. Spicy takes and arguments hidden in the Lightcone closure announcement? Fantastic sequel to "The Vultures Are Coming". When it was announced the Community posts would appear in a separate section of the Forum, the little drama-hungry goblin in my brain was at first disappointed. Oh no! Maybe I'll accidentally click on a post about malaria instead! Then I realized I can simply upweigh Community posts by +100 and I'll never miss another scandal ever again. Now, I visit almost daily. I briefly skim the frontpage post titles. Maybe occasionally I'll stop to learn more about some new org or read the executive summary of a high-quality research report. But honestly? Most of the time I just scroll through looking for drama, and if I don't find it, I close the tab and get on with my day. Thanks for listening.
Martin walks through the process of recording and producing an electro swing song from start to finish. ….. Everyone's Special and No One Is is a podcast about obscure, misunderstood, and/or controversial topics related to music.

Valerie Giglio joined Mark and John in studio for a great conversation. Valerie is an accomplished Jazz musician who has modernized her performances and made herself into an Electric Swing Songstress. Valerie has released two CD's and is working on a new project in what one could call a miraculous second call for her career. Valerie sang with the legendary AL Vega, her first CD release "Songbook" is a collection of her favorite standards backed by the Al Vega Trio. Her second CD release "The Italian Project" is an Italian language CD celebrating the music from the era of La Dolce Vita as well as Italian contemporary songs and Italian versions of classic American hits. At 42 years old, Valerie was succeeding as a lawyer and flourishing as a vocalist. Her world was turned upside down when she suffered a brain stem stroke which left her paralyzed on her entire left side. Confined to a wheel chair and having to endure endless rehabilitation in order to regain control of her body, Valerie was faced with a very dark reality... she had lost her singing voice. With fierce determination, the support of her husband Mark and family and her healthcare team Valerie overcame all hurdles. "Many amazing friends and family members stood by me during the tough times. They visited me in the hospital the week or so I was there, they came by or called or texted when I was home again. Even acquaintances became wonderful friends." One year later Valerie took to the stage in her second act. With members of her rehab team and a reporter from the Boston Globe in the room, Valerie took to the stage at Johnny D's Uptown Restaurant and Lounge in Somerville. She was the featured singer on the bill for Chick Singer Night. In June, 2021 she released her debut Electro Swing release "Starlite Ballroom" with an upcoming album to follow. What we learned during our interview with Valerie is that she is a determined fighter that doesn't give up! As part of her fight back she wrote a memoir, Singing In My Own Key, it details her triumph over stroke and it is a great read. She is also on the about to start appearing with a new duo project Starlight Vibes with fellow musician Samuel Cerra. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Consider Not Changing Your Forum Username to Your Real Name, published by electroswing on April 28, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This is a speculative and hastily written post, feedback welcome. First off: I pretty much agree with the post this post's title references. For people who want to be publicly associated with EA, having your real name easily/trivially discoverable from your EA Forum username seems good for numerous reasons. The purpose of this post is to investigate the premise “You should want to be publicly associated with EA”. Public EAs versus Private EAs In this post I will stick to the dichotomy of “public EA” versus “private EA”, even though there is certainly a grey area in between. Here is what I mean by each term: Public EA: Given a person's full name, it is possible to determine that they are involved with EA in about 1 minute of Googling. Examples of public EAs: people with EA Forum accounts under their real name, people who put EA in their Twitter bio associated with their real name, people who work for an EA org and are listed on the website Private EA: Given a person's full name, it is not possible to find any connection to EA, even after about 1 hour of Googling. Reasons why you might want to be a public EA The bulk of this post is dedicated to speculating about why being a public EA may be a bad thing for some people. Before I do that, I'll briefly list reasons why being a public EA can be a good thing. You open yourself up to more EA opportunities. (As described in this post, a good EA Forum post or a good EA twitter thread can lead to new friends, job offers, etc.) You enjoy participating in the EA community so extensively that you can't remain anonymous while doing so. You implicitly are advertising EA to others, which grows the movement. You, by being a public EA, are increasing the breadth / diversity of the EA movement. You (selfishly) enjoy publicly labeling yourself as an EA. Reasons why you might want to be a private EA You don't want to be seen as involved with “EA adjacent stuff” I don't think many people are objecting to providing safe drinking water to rural East African communities. I do think the public might object to EA adjacent stuff. By EA adjacent stuff I mean: billionaires, cryptocurrency, Silicon Valley, stuff like that. This article already brought attention to a politician's connection to “EA stuff”. If an article like this (or worse) would be bad for your reputation, you might not want any public connections to EA. Probably this concern is most relevant for people who want to be uncontroversial public figures. Here I mean public figures in the broad sense: politicians and policymakers count, but also lead researchers, professors, executives, and so on. Basically anybody seen to have “power”. I see two main ways a public figure could be negatively affected by their status as a public EA. EA could get you canceled on Twitter. These days, anybody with a public platform can get canceled, even for very minor offenses. It looks like EA is becoming increasingly intertwined with cancellable attributes. See this recent tweet: I imagine as EA becomes more well-funded and more publicly well-known, more “Cancelers” will draw connections between EA and things they think are bad such as billionaires and tech bros. If getting canceled would be very bad for your career, you might want to take this risk into account before going public. Mainstream media might give EA a bad reputation. I think this is separate from canceling because mainstream media has substantially farther reach and slightly more epistemic integrity than “Cancelers” on Twitter. I think the most likely outcome is that mainstream media paints a neutral picture of EA—they say something like, “GiveWell seems excellent, but EA also has connections to some bad i...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Announce summer EA internships farther in advance, published by electroswing on March 29, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. University students on an academic calendar in the US often start applying to summer opportunities as early as July or August and have their summer plans completely settled by January or February. For example: prestigious finance, consulting, and software engineering internships typically take most of their applications prior to December (or even sooner!), and funded summer research opportunities such as REUs typically have application deadlines in early February. By contrast, many high-quality opportunities for early-career EAs are on a slightly later timescale. Here are some selected opportunities, ordered by rough announcement date: CERI Summer Research Fellowship 2022: announced March 2022 Effective Self-Help Internship 2022: announced February 2022 CHERI Summer Internship 2022: deadline March 2022 (not sure when announced) ARC hiring round (includes intern opportunities): announced December 2021 PIBBS Summer Research Fellowship: announced December 2021 Redwood hiring round (includes intern opportunities): announced November 2021 SERI Summer Internship 2021: they seem to do rolling admissions which can start early This is potentially a problem: promising talent may be less willing to consider a summer position at an EA org once they have already committed to another opportunity. The most strategic and dedicated EAs will probably not be affected by this gap in application timelines. Such an EA can simply apply for a backup summer opportunity (in software, consulting, etc.), only intending to actually work there if their applications to EA organizations do not work out. However, university students newer to the EA landscape may be less likely to do this. One reason is that backing out of opportunities can damage social capital. For example, if a student has already agreed to do research with a professor, they may damage their relationship with that professor if they back out to work at an EA org instead. Additionally, submitting applications costs time and effort—a student who went through the arduous application process in the fall may be too exhausted to do it again in the spring. Thus: in order to make the most of the talent pool at top universities, EA summer internship programs might want to consider making a conscious effort to process applications on an earlier timescale. Ideally, they would do some sort of rolling admissions, starting in August-October, in order to accommodate for both the fall-winter and winter-spring application cycles. (The great news is, many EA orgs already have relatively flexible hiring practices in place, including rolling admissions! So this intervention of additionally processing applications on an earlier timescale is hopefully low cost and high impact.) I think there is a lot of value in providing EA internships to promising but not yet maximally engaged EAs. Often, all it takes is one internship to change the trajectory of a student. There are a lot of very smart people out there who haven't unlocked the kind of agency and confidence needed to formulate a plan like "I think I could succeed at these 5 EA orgs, and as a backup I will apply for finance/consulting/etc". Once more EA internships are advanced farther in advance, the next big source of impact is probably better advertisement. The EA Internships Board (announced last December 2021) is already a huge step in the right direction. EA university groups might also consider advertising EA summer opportunities around the time that their university's career fair is happening. Students might be more amenable to EA career suggestions if they arrive during the time that they are thinking about their own summer plans. Thanks for listening. To help us out ...
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Think about EA alignment like skill mastery, not cult indoctrination, published by electroswing on January 5, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. People doing meta-EA sometimes jokingly frame their work as “I want to indoctrinate people into EA, sort of like what cults do, but don't worry! Haha! What we do is fine because EA isn't a cult.” I think this is a harmful mindset. When thinking about how to get more people to be EA-aligned, I think skill mastery is a better model than cult indoctrination. Skill mastery often has these attributes: Repeated deliberate practice. “Thinking about it in the shower”, i.e. thinking about it without much effort. “Gears-level understanding”, i.e. knowing the foundations of the skill and understanding how all the pieces relate. Cult indoctrination is more about gaslighting people into believing that there can be no other truth than X. They do this by repeating talking points and creating closed social circles. Accordingly, when thinking about how to get more people to be EA-aligned, here are some good questions to ask: Can we build structures which enable repeated deliberate practice of EA? Good examples are intro fellowships, book recommendations, and club meetings. Are there more? Can we get people to “think about EA in the shower”? One way to improve this could be to provide better-written reading materials which pose questions which are amenable to shower thoughts. Can we encourage more “gears-level understanding” of EA concepts? For example, emphasize the reasons behind x-risk calculations rather than their conclusions. It is also probably a bad idea for EA to resemble a cult, because cults have bad epistemics. Accordingly, here are some paths to avoid going down: Repeating talking points: when discussing EA topics with a skeptical non-EA, don't repeat standard EA talking points if they're not resonating. It is useless to say “AI Safety is a pressing problem because superintelligent AGI may pose existential risk” if they do not believe superintelligent AGI could ever possibly exist. Instead, you can have a more intellectually honest conversation by first understanding what their current worldview and model of AI is, and building off of this. In other words it is important to adopt good pedagogy: building from the student's foundations, rather than instructing them to memorize isolated facts. Closed social circles: for example, in the setting of a university group, it is probably a bad idea to create an atmosphere where people new to EA feel out of place. The central idea here is that promoting gears-level understanding of EA concepts is important. Gears-level understanding often has repeated deliberate practice and shower thoughts as a prerequisite, so skill mastery and gears-level understanding are closely related goals. I would rather live in a world with people who have their own sound models of x-risk and other pressing problems, even if they substantially differ from the standard EA viewpoint, than a world of people who are fully on board with the standard EA viewpoints but don't have a complete mastery of the ideas behind them. Summary: People who try to get more people to be EA-aligned often use techniques associated with cult indoctrination, such as repeating talking points and creating closed social circles. Instead, I think it is more useful to think about EA-alignment as a skill that a person can master. Accordingly, good techniques to employ are repeated deliberate practice, "thinking about it in the shower", and promoting gears-level understanding. Thanks for listening. In this episode, Anne Marie chats with UK electro swing performer Madam Misfit. Her musical style combines elements of electro swing (also known as vintage remix), and chap hop. The inspiration behind her music comes from childhood influences of television and too much panda pop, with lyrics tumbling out of her imagination onto paper entertaining audiences with her delightful and witty humour.Madam Misfit shares her love of WWII music history, a history which hails back to her almost two decades career as a musician in the Royal Air Force.Madam MisfitWebsite: https://www.madammisfit.co.ukSocial Media:www.youtube.com/MadamMisfitwww.madammisfit.co.ukwww.facebook.com/madammisfitwww.instagram.com/madammisfitSwing Sisters Album, Kickstart: https://bit.ly/3oplohhSpoken Word, [VLOG] COVID Rantings: https://youtu.be/0Op761rIH4MProfessor Elemental: https://www.professorelemental.comThomas Benjamin Wild Esq.: https://tombwild.comTo Support Armchair Historians:Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/armchairhistoriansKo-fi: https://ko-fi.com/belgiumrabbitproductionsImage by Sophie Lavender Photography & Design: https://www.facebook.com/sophielavenderphotos/https://www.instagram.com/sophielavenderphotos/Potato Lady Podcast Reviews: https://www.potatoladypodcastreviews.comNot Again! Hear from Carey Rayburn, bandleader of Good Co Music. "Seattle six-piece Good Co is the United States' first live Electro Swing Band. That new old sound, Electro Swing combines the era of illicit booze, jitterbugging flappers, and underground speakeasies with the funky beats and the electric sound of today's dance music. At Good Co performances it's quite common for such things as onstage dance parties, 20 foot-long conga lines, and crowd sing-alongs to spontaneously break out.”.www.bestmadevideos.com/podcasts.www.bestmadeweddingvideos.comwww.goodcomusic.com
