Full tutorial: https://learn.adafruit.com/chinese-dragon-puppet-with-motion-reactive-flame-effect/overview Make a Chinese Dragon puppet with a dramatic flame LED effect. The lights are motion-reactive so he lights up when you shake him. This project uses an Adafruit Circuit Playground Express with a built-in motion sensor and NeoPixel LED lights. The code is written in Microsoft MakeCode, an easy-to-use drag and drop code editor. (Or maybe in this case, a dragon-drop code editor.) This is an easy beginner-level project that involves a little bit of soldering. You can download our code sample, or learn to make your own flame effects. This is a fantastic project to do with kids. In this episode, we will learn about the new features of this great alpha product for the micro:bit. Its main goals are to make coding with Python per se and Python on the micro:bit more accessible: * An appealing user interface with bright colours * Contextual help and autocomplete * Example snippets of code you can browse and insert, like browsing blocks in MakeCode or Scratch * Simple code structure highlighting to aid understanding about indents in Python * Explanation of features of MicroPython useful in CS teaching, but not covered in device-oriented documentation * Built-in serial console and REPL so you can do more traditional Python coding using your keyboard input and printing to the screen – the micro:bit is your Python runtime! Special Guest: Giles Booth.

This week's EYE ON NPI is a timely one - the Sensirion SCD4X (SCD40 and SCD41) a fantastic upgrade to the Sensirion SCD30 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sensirion-ag/SCD30/8445334). Sensirion were clearly working on this sensor for a few years, but got some excellent timing as they finished and released it right when demand for CO2 sensors skyrocketed. Carbon dioxide, aka CO2, is a gas that is an essential part of the Earth's atmosphere and life in general. However, while essential, it can have negative effects when concentrations exceed certain levels. It can impact the entire planet via global warming. But it can also have very local effects, for example on indoor air quality. Elevated levels of CO2 can lead to reduced cognitive ability and other health related concerns. Therefore, monitoring CO2 levels of inside air can be useful as a part of gauging general air quality. Folks have had CO2 air-quality sensors in buildings and homes for a long time, but now they're extremely popular because CO2 levels are correlated with air freshness. Outdoor air is about 400 ppm CO2. Us humans love to breathe in air, extract the O2 and fill rooms with CO2. That means when there's poor ventilation to the outdoors, and lots of humans, the air is going to get higher and higher CO2. (https://theconversation.com/how-to-use-ventilation-and-air-filtration-to-prevent-the-spread-of-coronavirus-indoors-143732) We consider under 1000 ppm to be 'good' but really we want to keep it under 600 ppm if we can since that has been shown to reduce transmission of airborne disease (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/ina.12639) First, let's talk about the SCD-30, since this the next generation sensor. The SCD-30 is an NDIR sensor, which is a 'true' CO2 sensor that will tell you the CO2 PPM (parts-per-million) composition of ambient air. Unlike the SGP30, this sensor isn't approximating it from VOC gas concentration - it really is measuring the CO2 concentration! That means it's a lot bigger and more expensive than eCO2 sensors, but it is the real thing. Perfect for environmental sensing, scientific experiments, air quality and ventilation studies, and more. However, its...kinda chunky and requires hand-soldering. Thus the awesome introduction of the SCD4X series which comes in four part numbers: SCD-D-R1 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sensirion-ag/SCD40-D-R1/13684001), SCD-D-R2 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sensirion-ag/SCD40-D-R2/13684003), SCD41-D-R1 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sensirion-ag/SCD41-D-R1/13684000) and SCD41-D-R2 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sensirion-ag/SCD41-D-R2/13684005). The SCD40 and SCD41 differ in price and precision. SCD40 is base accuracy, with a specified range of 400 to 2000 ppm for continuous measurements, good for vast majority of indoor measurements. SCD41 is high accuracy, specified range 400 to 5,000 ppm, with both continuous and single shot mode supported: perhaps better for scientific or industrial or low-power use cases. Both have the same instructions and footprint so you could swap them easily on the PCBs. It was really easy for us to get an Arduino demo going with the SCD4x because Sensirion has written drivers for Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Python and even MakeCode! (https://github.com/Sensirion/?q=scd4&type=&language=&sort=) Add to that, there's a cute breakout board with JST-PH connector and breakout pads so you can quickly wire it up and get data into your favorite platform. (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sensirion-ag/SEK-SCD41-SENSOR/13684004?s=N4IgTCBcDaIM4GMAmAWEBdAvkA) The sensor can run from 3 to 5V but we've noted that it needs very low ripple - so use the quietest power supply you have access to. With built-in humidity and temperature sensing as well, it's an all-in-one air measurement sensor about the size of a skittle. You can pick up SCD40 and SCD41 sensors at Digi-Key. (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/gas-sensors/530?s=N4IgTCBcDaIMoGEAiAWEBdAvkA) Note that at this moment they're out of stock, but they will be restocked in a few weeks so sign up to be notified or place on backorder. There are breakout boards available now (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sensirion-ag/SEK-SCD41-SENSOR/13684004?s=N4IgTCBcDaIM4GMAmAWEBdAvkA) - order today so you can start sensing tomorrow! KidsLab - a podcast for parents and educators passionate about STEAM education
In this episode, I am talking to Joern Alraun, managing partner at Calliope, about the next version of the Calliope Mini Single Board Computer - Calliope Mini v2.That’s the second time that I interview Joern and the third time we discuss the Calliope Mini - it’s simply a very cool board I guess. Jørn is an interaction designer, co-founder of several companies with a focus on developing digital learning toys and he is a member of the Interaction Design Association. As you might recall, Joern is the managing partner at Calliope gGmbH and in the last interview with him about the Boson Starter Kit for Calliope Mini, he already mentioned that a Calliope Mini v2 is coming soon. The Calliope Mini is an educational board for kids to learn coding - if you need details about the Calliope Mini in general, please be sure to look at the shownote links at kidslab.dev for the specific Calliope Mini episodes. So now the v2.0 of Calliope Mini is out, featuring a memory chip which can hold up to 25 programs. Even better, the Calliope Mini v2 already ships with 25 programs, which means the board can now be used right out of the box, without prior programming. That makes a huge difference when you think of a typical classroom situation and want to get started exploring the board.

Full Tutorial: https://learn.adafruit.com/glowing-bottle-lamp/overview Make a beautiful rainbow colored glowing bottle lamp with fairy lights inside. You don't need to catch actual fairies, or chase down a real rainbow, but it will look as though you did! Decorate it with your favorite stickers and place it on your windowsill, and I guarantee you it will attract both rainbows and fairies into your life. And couldn't we all use more rainbows and fairies? Difficulty Level This is a very easy beginner project that's perfect to do with kids who are interested in learning about making things light up. The assembly is easy enough for kids as young as 4-5 (with a little help from an adult). Kids that young can also pick their own colors with the MakeCode drag-and-drop app, and slightly older school-aged kids will have fun coding the whole project by themselves. If you're a Grown Up Kid like me who still loves rainbows and fairies, this is a great place to get introduced to programmable lights, and you'll end up with a stunning piece of art when you're done. Full Tutorial: https://learn.adafruit.com/neopixel-led-necklace-insert-with-usb-charging/overview Sometimes you want to add animated lights to your costume or project and you're really limited on space. Necklaces are a great example of this - a glowing pendant can be so striking, but if it's too big and bulky it can cross the line to "gaudy" pretty quickly. This tutorial aims to make the smallest possible NeoPixel module or insert for your project. We've worked to make it super small, at around 1/2" thick and about 2" across. This tiny package still contains all the niceties: 7-12 addressable NeoPixel lights A compact on/off switch A rechargeable battery with 4+ hours of battery life Onboard USB charging capability We're using an Itsy Bitsy M0 microcontroller, which can be programmed with CircuitPython, MakeCode or Arduino, so you've got lots of options, and we've included an easy-to-customize code sample as well. Full tutorial: https://learn.adafruit.com/epoxy-resin-torch-lamp-with-touch-control-3d-printed-base/ Make your own custom Minecraft-inspired Torch lamp from epoxy resin. Embed a strand of fairy lights inside, and set it on top of a Circuit Playground Express. The onboard NeoPixel lights provide a lovely, flickery torch effect. This gorgeous lamp glows from the inside out. Add a piece of shiny copper tape to the base, and you can change light modes with a touch of your finger. Capacitive touch control is just like magic! We've provided a simple 3d printable base model, or you can get creative and design your own display mount. We made ours look like Viking Dragon Ships to go with our Dragon Wall Sconce, and now we sail into sleep at night with fiery dragonish gargoyles watching over us. Difficulty Electronics Build: Easy This is a great beginner project if you're new to electronics. The wiring is really simple, and there's no soldering required. Software / Coding: Easy We've provided code you can drag-and-drop to program your Circuit Playground using MakeCode, Microsoft's free online coding program. It's easy to customize our code or come up with your own. Physical Build: Challenging Making the resin block is the hardest part of this project. There are a lot of ways it can go wrong, and epoxy resin can get expensive when your first or second pour doesn't go right. On the other hand, it's really satisfying when it does go right, and you can create something that catches light - and people's eyes - like nothing else.Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

Talk Python To Me - Python conversations for passionate developers
Python is one of the primary languages for IoT devices. With runtimes such as CircuitPython and MicroPython, they are ideal for the really small IoT chips. Maybe you've heard of the Circuit Playground Express, BBC micro:bit, or the fancy Adafruit CLUE. They aren't too expensive (ranging from $25 to $50 each). But for large groups such as classrooms, this can be a lot of money. Moreover, getting your hands on these devices can sometimes be tricky as well. With an extension for VS Code called Device simulator express, you can have instant access to all three (virtually of course). This cool extension adds a visual emulator as well as the native interactions such as buttons and temperature sensors. Get your IoT on without a real device using VS code today. Let's meet the most recent team behind this project: Guests * Andrea Mah * Sayyeda Mussa * Vandy Liu * Xuan-Nam Kevin Nguyen Links from the show Device simulator express: microsoft.com Source code: github.com Makecode: microsoft.com Meet the team (short video intro): youtu.be Overview video: youtu.be Devices Circuit Playground Express: adafruit.com CLUE: adafruit.com BBC micro:bit: microbit.org Sponsors Linode Talk Python Training

The TeacherCast Podcast – The TeacherCast Educational Network
In this episode of the TeacherCast Podcast, we welcome Dr. Sam Patterson of My Paperless Classroom and Todd Beard from Microsoft YouthSpark to discuss why Computer Science classes are vitally important for today's students. As technology has become an integral part of people's daily lives around the world, we're seeing a growing demand – from students, parents, teachers, governments, and nonprofits – to teach youth not only how to use technology, but also how to create technology to help them become the innovators and drivers of growth and opportunity in their communities. But what does this look like in the classroom? How do educators balance this new charge with other important content requirements? What is Microsoft YouthSpark?Microsoft YouthSpark is a global initiative to increase access for all youth to learn computer science, empowering them to achieve more for themselves, their families and their communities.
