**CONTENT WARNING: this episode has mentions of sexual harassment/assault.** Stephanie and Cam talk about the nature of consent in image usage for another artist’s work. Stephanie and Cameron discuss the somewhat recent story of racist fuckery unleashed on a group of 7th graders that occurred at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. They dig into the fact that there’s no way this was an isolated incident but wonder if the outcome (the museum introducing “sensitivity training” and banning former members that perpetuated racism) was enough. Yet another favorite artist of Stephanie’s has recently made headlines—oh wait, did I say “favorite artist”? Oh sorry, I meant another of Steph’s favorite artists to deeply despise. Cam and Steph discuss the piece simply known as “Rabbit” by Jeff Koons, which sold at auction for a cool $91 million. While they’re glad Koons doesn’t actually see that money, they do have a thought or two on the piece itself and implications of the sale. Like whatchur hearing? Please consider supporting us! Steph and Cam discuss a (somewhat) recent controversy sparked by a Tweet made on webcomic artist Nathan Pyle’s Twitter about the march for life and “pro-life” movement in general back in 2017. It raised some questions and concerns amongst progressive fans about whether or not this creator is anti-abortion. Cam and Steph talk about how it seems that he has left it up to interpretation with a half-baked answer following the backlash. Also, this episode has a handful of those infamous poOoOoOlarizing opinions, so…be warned. Like whatchur hearing? Please consider supporting us! You may have heard about “SpaghettiO Girl” before, but if not, Steph and Cam would like to tell you a bit about her in this episode and give you some of their thoughts on her notorious, once-viral performance piece: “Interior Semiotics”. It involves SpaghettiO’s, a pair of scissors, students at SAIC…and, well, you might be able to fill in the rest. Beyond this, they also talk about some work by the well-known performance artist, Marina Ambramović, and why her pieces seem to have more impact than other performance works out there. Cam and Steph recently found out about a play called All In A Row that went up in the UK last month. The play sounds to have been, uh, Extremely Bad…however, not everyone thought so. Which is to say, there were people who think it’s totally chill to portray autistic kids as ugly gray puppets and make reference to them being animals…? HUH. Do the political works of contemporary painter Jon McNaughton have similarities to those of Thomas Benton Hart? And is McNaughton’s work straight up propaganda? Steph sent Cam an article about an artist in France whose show was recently pulled due to accusations of plagiarism. Overall, they think you should go for it if you want to…just…ya know, get ready to wear a lot of hats. Mostly cool hats. But some hats you don’t get paid enough to wear, too. So…there’s that. Steph and Cam are joined by special guest, Emil Brewer (http://instagram.com/lime4ever)! The three discuss that big idea of how race plays into art. Emil shares some of his background around finding his love of art in high school, and the group talks about the ways people of color find themselves becoming their own resources to help each other nourish the things they love. They discuss how white spaces that house art can tend to look at works by people of color and other marginalized groups as “niche”. Is art that is made *of* people of color *by* white people considered not “niche” and more “valuable”? Is there a way that white folks can just…do better? And yes, the episode does touch on serious topics, but we do have a chuckle or two. You may even hear about something that reveals just how white Cam is when they admit they might be a *little* interested in the idea of an art show centered around paintings of Lassie (yes the dog). They *do* start talking about the topic at hand. I promise. They briefly ponder things like: is nostalg-art (nostalgia + pop art) a thing? Are Vines the first true video-style memes? And they wonder if maybe memes are, more than anything, a form of non-confrontational communication with others. Also, can memes that use combinations of art or media with silly text be separated? They also discuss the cosmetic line, Benefit and get into their thoughts about what it is that even makes design good. Also, they chat about a shared favorite design: Secret Hitler. Welcome to part two of a ~sober~ art chat (Stephanie was still working to get over her sinus infection). Cam and Steph DID have Starbucks, however! (not sponsored) Also, apologies for the particularly loud noises that Cam’s neighbors were making. Maybe they just really want to be on the show in some way or something, who knows. In this episode, Stephanie and Cam talk about some of their favorite brands of art supplies, some they don’t love, and everything in between. A few brands they discuss are: Crayola, Rose Art, Faber-Castell, Reeves, Cotman watercolors by W & N (Wizard Newman—just kidding—Windsor Newton), Golden, Sennelier, Daniel Smith, Liquitex, Copic, Prismacolor, NuPastel, and Gelli Plates. Plus, they answer some art supply related FAQs like: is it possible to get good supplies on a budget, and why are they so dang expensive? Can you mix oils with acrylics? Steph and Cam are joined by dear friend and multi-talented local artist: Jonathan Stutz! Semisonic said it best in their song “Closing Time”: ‘Every new art comes from some other art's trend’. Er…close enough. In episode 9, Steph and Cam discuss all the trends they’ve noticed pop up in art such as: zen tangle, adult coloring books, paint by numbers, pixel art, and art with geometric shading. They also talk about more recent fads like cacti and succulents, mermaids, unicorns, embroidery, hand lettering, and paint pouring. And Stephanie has some thoughts on the evolution of trends in anime and cartoons. Following the break, they reflect on what these trends say about society and touch on all that good, good 90’s kid nostalgia we’re always seeing these days. Cameron and Stephanie kick it off by giving us their definitions of traditional and digital art, and then Cam forgets the name of the artist who paints with her fingers (it was Iris Scott). Then they each attempt to answer some burning questions, such as: will digital art ever *replace* traditional art? Is Quark still a thing (their website would make it seem so, but they’re probably not taking down the juggernaut that is Adobe anytime soon)? Also, should Cam and Steph have studied computer programming (Cam’s experience attempting to teach two 8-year-olds HTML might shed light on the answer)? And how about the fact that there’s technically no “original” piece with digital work—does that make it less valuable? oh, and, this isn’t art related, but somewhere in this episode…Stephanie definitely teaches Cam some alternative words for “taint”. Let's talk about Drag, bay-b! Well, let's talk about some of the more well-known drag shows out there, at least. Cam and Steph discuss stuff about RuPaul's Drag Race (including recent controversies), The Boulet Brothers' Dragula, James St. James, and a buncha other folx in the drag scene. They also talk about Drag King Landon Cider, why they think drag is on the rise, and if they themselves would ever try to do an actual drag performance. They still don't really know what their drag names should be. Music by Jonathan Stutz (stutzmusic.bandcamp.com) --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/drunk-art-chat/support
So...Steph and Cam are kind of obsessed with bad movies. They'll discuss quite a few, so be warned that there are indeed spoilers! This episode kicks off with a somewhat impromptu game wrapped around some clips for Alejandro Jodorowsky's, Santa Sangre (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bx2vwzXF1B0) and the trailer for Menahem Golan's, The Apple (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uix3tbov65o). They also dig into the...uh...artfulness(?) of Repo The Genetic Opera, CarGo, Foodfight!, Bee Movie, Fateful Findings, and, of course, The Room. Ah, who doesn't love that that magic moment when you sit down to make some new work and...nothing interesting happens. Yeah, uh...exactly no one loves that moment. Steph and Cam talk about their experiences with creative blocks and ways they, as well as others, suggest getting through them. Also in this episode: Steph tells us about her experiences using gouache for the first time, both Cam and Steph chuckle about the many ways people mispronounce that word (goosh??), Cam apparently feels that many things "have value", and a new ending segment is introduced! Oh, and, Stephanie laughs at the words "touch" and "hole". Music by Jonathan Stutz (stutzmusic.bandcamp.com) --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/drunk-art-chat/support
Welcome to a (surprise) mini episode of Drunk Art Chat! Cam and Steph talk about their thoughts and experiences with the idea of artists getting paid in "exposure". They also discuss working for family members, their process for pricing work, and Steph tells us about a time it was hard to say no to a commission at a con (even though she really wanted to). **CONTENT WARNING: this episode has mentions of sexual harassment/assault, remarks made by anti-LGBTQIA people, and not so positive race-related topics. ** Cam and Steph attempt to discuss the issue of problematic artists and their work. For the first half of the podcast, they are joined by writer Scott Nichols (@duckols) to touch on various creators that fall into this category. In the second half, they dissect and discuss the visual art of Rachel Dolezal. Music by Jonathan Stutz (stutzmusic.bandcamp.com) --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/drunk-art-chat/support
In this episode, Cam remembers the thing they wanted to ask Stephanie! We mostly dig deeper into our backgrounds as artists and take it all the way back to high school (warning: episode contains high volumes of venting/ranting). I mean, who DOESN'T miss being under a ton of pressure about choosing what to do for "the rest of your life" as an 18-year-old?? Ugh, those dang heckin' millennials with their crippling debt and crushing anxiety. Music by Jonathan Stutz (stutzmusic.bandcamp.com) --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/drunk-art-chat/support
