What if your cell phone turned you into a zombie? Okay, that's probably already the case, but I mean a real honest to God zombie? That's the premise of Stephen King's 2006 novel and its questionable, shoddy, and rather unpleasant 2016 adaptation starring the usually dependable John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson.
I spoke with Rob Sheridan, Founder of Uluwatu Limited, a Hong Kong based investment manager about how he's using his experience working at Global Endowment Management and Ward Ferry to identify the companies which will matter the most in Asia over the coming decades. We talked about Rob's career and road to Hong Kong; how he developed his investment process; the importance in long term investing of underwriting good management teams; portfolio construction; and how he keeps himself honest in the short term. We tied everything together at the end with a case study of freee kk, a Japanese ERP software provider. The explosion of AI-generated art has taken the internet by storm, and is poised to continue growing for a long time. In turn, that's sparked a lot of conversation (and a lot of backlash) about the impact on artists — but much of the controversy seems misguided or overblown. This week, we're joined by Rob Sheridan, an artist and designer who has embraced the power of these tools, to discuss what AI-generated art really means for artists.
Monarda Thrasher loved Mixed Precipitation's traveling production of “The Magic Flute” when they saw it earlier this month in Grand Marais, and they highly recommend this fun, modern take on Mozart's opera. Mixed Precipitation calls its traveling series “The Pickup Truck Opera” because the truck and trailer are both the mode of travel and part of the set design. Set in Strange Land Middle School, this production explores teacher shortages, burnout and toxic positivity. Papageno and Papagena are janitors, and the raging Queen of the Night is recast as an education administrator. The dialogue is in English, and performers slip easily from German arias to pop songs and back again. As an opera lover, Thrasher worried that this shortened production might leave them wanting more, but they said there was enough of the original music to satisfy, danced and sung in a way that kept their whole family entertained. The outdoor production takes place Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. at Alexis Bailly Vineyard in Hastings, as well as Sept. 10 at Swede Hollow Park in St. Paul and Sept. 11 at JD Rivers' Children's Garden in Minneapolis. Minneapolis comedian Robert Fones plans to spend his Labor Day weekend at Prairie Fyre music festival in Wood Lake in southwestern Minnesota. The camping/music festival runs Friday evening through Monday, with a line-up of over 50 bands and performers. Fones says the space that will hold the event is beautiful, and he's intrigued by the line-up of music, burlesque, comedy, and poetry. Festival attendees can also join in on glitch art workshops Saturday and Sunday mornings in nearby Granite Falls and get back in time for the musical events that start at 2 pm. Friday evening's opening event features a Q&A with comic book author Rob Sheridan, who is best known for his art work with Nine Inch Nails. Will Dykes of the band Montclair really enjoys the sound of the Rat Castle Jazz Ensemble. He says the Minneapolis group has a unique sound that doesn't pander and they collaborate and connect with other local bands. You can find the Rat Castle Jazz Ensemble's work on all streaming platforms as well performing across the Twin Cities. Here they are at the White Squirrel bar in St. Paul: Don't see video? On this episode, Mike and Jon are joined by guest co-host Rob Sheridan to talk about a whole heap of things! SPOILERS: Mike and Jon discuss the end of Chapter 6 of Red Dead 2 and their initial thoughts on the epilogue of the game (If you haven't played this far or haven't reached this part of the game Skip ahead to about 12/15 minutes in). Rob and his wife got their hands on a PSVR and what his impressions are of console VR vs PC VR. They also got to experience some VR porn and it sounds wild...rooms may look a bit messy...per Rob's wife Stephanie. Bungie and Activision have parted ways in terms of publishing rights for Destiny 2 which could allow for some interesting new doors to open in terms of the development of the game. Bethesda holds a players account hostage because they accessed a secret area within Fallout 76. Rob got to see Into the Spider-verse and gives his thoughts on the film which also extends into an idea of curated media for comics/streaming media in which ACTUAL people curate "playlists" of TV episodes (Cartoons mostly) or series of comics (where to start). We round all of this talk out with our thoughts on the first footage of HBO's Watchmen series that was shown during the Golden Globes
Recorded before we rolled into the new year, Mike and Jon dive into a couple of discussions covering a wide range of topics. Our friend (and soon to be reoccuring guest host) Rob Sheridan sent Mike an early preview of High Level issue one (out February 2019) and without spoiling a thing, Mike gushes about his feelings for the first issue and the world/story it presents to the reader. Mike and Jon hop into their discussion and thoughts on "Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse" followed by Jon's thoughts on Venom. Jon also follows up with his thoughts on long awaited release Below, which didn't seem to hit all the things that Jon was hoping for. Mike explains the situation of what took place with Battlestate Games and Eroktic in which they issued 40+ DMCA's against the YouTuber and what it meant for his channel and now where the situation is. Mike spends some time talking about the newly released Insurgency Sandstorm and rounding out the episode is Jon's thoughts on the CW "Elseworlds" and what the CW does right for the DC universe.
On this episode Jon and Mike are joined by former art director for Nine Inch Nails, Rob Sheridan and discuss how he got his start working along side Trent Reznor to help set up the bands first website to directing and editing the live concert footage for "Beside You In Time", most notably is Robs work on the Year Zer0 album. In the midst of all this Rob had another story he wanted to tell, and when DC wanted to reboot Vertigo he was brought on to write for an original story called High Level joined by artists Barnaby Bagenda and Romulo Fajardo Jr. While we couldn't get TO indepth about High Level there was still quite a bit to talk about, having just returned from NYCC. Rob also spends a little time talking with Mike and Jon about the recent issues hitting Marvel with the firing of Chuck Wendig and the issue at hand with ComicsGate.
Breaching your atmosphere in a very short time will be Pod Like A Hole's "Year Zero" recap. However, what was too rich, too thick to even fit in that episode was a deep dive into the immense world that Trent Reznor, Rob Sheridan and the artists at 42 Entertainment built around these songs. It's in this world building that the characters and perspective for all the songs on Year Zero came from. Starting in 2007 (i.e. The year Negative-15) all the way to 2022 (i.e. Year Zero, 0000) there is an exciting cast of characters, mind controlling drugs, soul-crushing politicians and hopeful, though often violent, resistance fighters. Though we'll mention direct references in the main episode, this bonus-sode will truly give you a thorough background. If hearing co-host Eric Anderson dust off a poster board and attach some yarn to connect all the characters, timelines and theories sounds like a fun way to get excited for our Year Zero episode, then start here!Acknowledgments: None of this would have been possible without the research by the collaborators over at http://http://www.nin.wiki/Main_PageIf you want to see even more in depth research, check that out.find the direct download at: http://http://shoutengine.com/PodLikeAHoleANineInchNailsandTrentReznorPodcast/
Steph and Cam are joined by dear friend and multi-talented local artist: Jonathan Stutz! You might recognize their name from the credits and some past shows, as Jonathan has so graciously provided this podcast with their music. Cameron and Steph recently came across a video (which you can watch here: https://youtu.be/H0NZ1v7g-ss) about a phenomenon known as cryptomnesia. They were super interested in the concept and wanted to dig into it more, which is what they all do while Cam and Steph enjoy a few sips of some super good sangria. Since there's A LOT that gets touched on in this episode, we're just gonna list it all for you.
