Discussed in this episode:Thanks to @Ben-Schulman on YouTube for the information!BETH'S BACK STORY: All of Beth's songs are personal and delve deeply into themes of addiction; drugs & alcohol; abusive relationships; death & suicide; love; Scott (her husband of 23 years); her siblings & parents; living with mental illness; survival; playing music; and striving for happiness… She is a humble but wickedly talented artist who is raw, transparent, and completely honest with her audience. Some of the many personal and professional challenges she has endured and overcome:• Parents divorce when Beth is about 5 years old.• In psychological therapy starting at age 7.• Experiences a violent home invasion and robbery.• Father gambles the house away; abandons family; imprisoned for tax evasion. (The song “Try a Little Hard” off her latest album is about her dad and gambling).• Beth is an alcoholic by age 11.• At 12 years old, she's in a “relationship” with a 40 year-old man (The song “Woman Down,” off her latest album, is about this).• At 15 she takes off for Brooklyn, NY to live with a violent 25 year-old man.• Arrested & briefly jailed for DUI.• At 16, back in LA, she's asked to leave a prestigious music school because of poor attendance (caused by her staying out all night long to sing in South LA clubs).• In a string of abusive personal relationships. (She's written many songs about this theme, but “Caught Out in the Rain” and “Fire on the Floor” are two superb examples). • When Beth is 22, an older sister Sharon dies of AIDS at age 32. (The songs “Skin” and “Sister Heroine” are about her sister Sharon).• Officially diagnosed with Bi-polar I mental disorder around age 27.• As musical career begins to explode in 1999 with the hit single “LA Song,” Beth weighs just 92 lbs. and nearly dies due to drugs, alcohol, and anorexia.• Atlantic Records drops her from the label by 2000.• Long-term drug & alcohol addiction and series of stays in rehab and psyche wards. (Her song “Isolation” is about being in a psyche ward; “Spiders in My Bed” is about living with bipolar mania). By late 2000/early 2001, Beth is completely out of the music business.(1) 2023: The most recent documentary is “Bad Woman Blues” (60 min; a German production) from fall 2023: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9Fjr2HTGdY(2) 2005: “Beth Hart Documentary” (from the 2005 ‘Live at Paradiso' DVD; 32 min. plus 8 min. song): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFHisbCrqdg. This early documentary is from the time of Beth's re-emergence and comeback into the music scene in Europe with the 2003 “Leave the Light On” album and legendary Paradiso concert in May 2004. (3) 2018: “The Beth Hart Story: From Los Angeles to Amsterdam” (32 min): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGkubyOS7jw. This documentary aired on Dutch TV in 2018, following Beth's big-time, sold-out, appearances at the Royal Albert Hall in London (5,300) and the Ziggo Dome (17,000) in Amsterdam earlier in the year. (4) 2020: “Beth Hart's Soulful Tale of Survival and Redemption”(22 min): https://spectrumnews1.com/ca/la-west/la-stories/2020/02/17/beth-hart-s-story-of-survival-and-redemption# . This is a terrific “career retrospective” type piece that aired on LA TV host Giselle Fernandez's “LA Stories” in 2020.(5) 2022: PBS's “Soundcheck: Beth Hart” (27 min.): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSfBq3bGEHw. Erin Stiles on Mormon encounters with the spirit world

Erin Stiles is the author of The Devil Sat on My Bed: Encounters with the Spirit World in Mormon Utah. As the back cover describes: "In the mountains of beautiful, bucolic northern Utah, many Latter-day Saints (Mormons) are visited by spirits. Local folklore is filled with stories of uncanny encounters of all kinds, and Latter-day Saint scripture and prophetic teachings emphasize the reality and the importance of the spirit world. Spirit encounters are common in this community. People report visits from the benevolent spirits of kin offering aid and also from evil spirits who tempt and harass. Combining folklore research with ethnography, the book examines many types of spirit encounters and shows that such experiences must be understood as particularly Latter-day Saint phenomena. "Spirit encounters take place within a larger cultural and religious framework that emphasizes the important relationships between living and non-living beings. For Mormons in northern Utah, spirit lore and experiences are interpreted and understood with reference to Latter-day Saint cosmology and particularly Mormon conceptions of the nature of the person, the spirit, and the family, and the nature of righteousness, evil, and spiritual power. The book also explores how people in Utah differentiate between "Mormon culture," the institutional church, and how they understand the "true" meaning of the religion, which has relevance far beyond understanding of people's relationship to the spirit realm and spirit power, and speaks to key issues of concern―and polarization―among Latter-day Saints today." Erin E. Stiles is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Nevada, Reno. Her primary interests are in the anthropology of religion and law, and she has worked in East Africa and in the western United States. She has conducted extensive ethnographic research on the everyday workings of Islamic courts in Zanzibar, Tanzania, with a particular focus on marital disputes. Her more recent work focuses on Latter-day Saint experiences of the spirit realm in northern Utah, where she grew up. This topic is just as relevant now, so we've put it out again. What if you tried this thing? What if... you wrote your book? Tune in and get the pep talk you've been waiting for.   Key Takeaways:   [6:40] Casa Dingle update! Lots of poo happening. [9:40] What if you made your own door? What if you just….did? Just for the fun of it?  [22:40] New year, new me. There's a better way to go about it.  [22:50] What if you wrote your book…this year? The Great Women Artists

WELCOME BACK TO SEASON 8 OF THE GREAT WOMEN ARTISTS PODCAST!! ...and what better way to kick it off with than an INTERVIEW with the world renowned artist, TRACEY EMIN! -- TW: This episode contains discussions around abortion. -- Tracey Emin's an oeuvre that encompasses painting textiles, sculpture, neons, film, installations and more, and is some of the most frank, personal, confessional, and visceral to ever exist. She speaks universal two truths on a personal level, drawing on love, desire, loss and grief. Whether it be her 18.2 tonne or nine metre high bronze, The Mother – as recently installed outside the Munch Museum in Oslo – or an intimate watercolour drawing, Emin's works holds so much power. They are alive with energy and have the ability to send us to places that resonate, that make us feel, that are somehow incredibly familiar, but make us question so much. Just as she has said, “True art should resonate. It should make you feel it's not a picture. It's not a thing. It's not an object. It is a true thing that has energy. That's what makes it art.” Born in Croydon, and raised in Margate -- where the artist resides today and where she has just been named a free woman -- Emin studied at Maidstone Art College, followed by the Royal College of Art. It was in the 1990s that she came to the fore with a shop she ran with fellow artist, Sarah Lucas, in 1993. And her hugely significant biographical works, from Everyone I Have Ever Slept With (1963–1995) to My Bed, 1998, works that changed the course of art history and have been just as contemporary and relevant today and in the years to come. In 2007 She represented Britain at the Venice Biennale, and in 2008, she had her first major retrospective at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. In recent years, she has installed a poignant Nan in St. Pancras station, I Want My Time With You; taken painting to new heights with her incredibly strong and emotive works -- as recently exhibited at her joint exhibition with Edvard Munch at the Royal Academy of Arts -- and her current exhibition at Jupiter Artland in Scotland. Following a severe illness in 2020, she has, in her words, made her most “honest and complete” work to date, as witnessed in her incredible show earlier this year, a journey to death at Carl freeborn gallery in Margate, Tracey Emin, -- ENJOY!!! Today Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs is considered Eric Clapton's best work.  However, at the time that this double album debut by Derek and the Dominos came out it was considered both a commercial and critical failure.  Clapton met fellow Derek and the Dominos band members Bobby Whitlock (keyboards), Carl Radle (bass) and Jim Gordon (drums) when working with Delaney & Bonnie.  Whitlock and Clapton got together at Clapton's house and composed most of what would become the original songs on the Layla album. The name Derek and the Dominos was chosen by Eric Clapton because he was tired of the supergroup approach to music and did not want his fame to overshadow the band.  Derek and the Dominos played a lot of small clubs in England in August, then went to Miami to record the studio album. The group met up with Duane Allman in Miami, and Allman and Clapton struck up a close friendship from the start.  Allman would record on 11 of the 14 songs on the album. Most know that the song Layla was inspired by Clapton's infatuation with Pattie Boyd Harrison, George Harrison's wife.  In truth, many of the songs on the Layla album were performed with Pattie Boyd in mind.Unfortunately this double album is the only record these musicians would make together.  Clapton would struggle with drug addiction and depression for several years afterward, and Allman would die in a tragic accident in 1971.  The reputation of this album would grow over time, however, and is iconic today. Bell Bottom BluesThis song was the first single, and was written by Clapton and Whitlock.  The inspiration for the song was that Pattie Boyd had asked Clapton to get her a pair of bell-bottom blue jeans while he was in the United States.  It's Too LateThe album contains five covers including this blues song originally benned by Chuck Willis in 1956.  Clapton and Whitlock trade off on vocals, and guitar work is from Eric Clapton and Duane Allman.  The song would be performed on Derek and the Dominos' only TV appearance, on the Johnny Cash Show in January 1971.Why Does Love Got to Be So SadYou can hear a terrific jam between Clapton and Allman on guitar in this song.  It swings from A minor on the verses to D major on the chorus.  Whitlock and Clapton trade off vocal work.LaylaThis signature track was inspired by a 12th century tale called “The Story of Layla and Majnun.”  It is about a young man who falls hopelessly in love with a young girl only to be rebuffed by her father because of his obsession with her.  Clapton of course identified with the story of hopeless love because of his feelings toward Pattie Boyd Harrison. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series “The Goodies”This offbeat comedy series premiered in the UK in this month. STAFF PICKS:Share the Land by the Guess WhoBrian starts off the staff picks with the title track from the Guess Who's seventh studio album, and the first after the departure of guitarist Randy Bachman.  The lyrics reflect the growing popularity of the environmental movement.  Burton Cummings wrote this song and sings lead.Cherryhill Park by Billy Joe RoyalWayne brings us a story song about a young girl named Mary Hill who “was a thrill after dark in Cherryhill Park.”  The thrills end when Mary Hill marries a rich man.  Billy Joe Royal was born in Valdosta, Georgia.Montego Bay by Bobby BloomRob finds an early reggae-influenced rock song.  Bobby Bloom and Jeff Berry wrote this one-hit wonder.  It made it to number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Sadly, Bobby Bloom died in 1974 at the age of 28.Somebody's Been Sleeping in My Bed by 100 Proof (Aged in Soul)Bruce's staff pick comes from the songwriting team of Holland-Dozier Holland after they left Motown Records to set up a separate label.  This song about discovering evidence of infidelity went to number 8 on the US pop charts, and was 100 Proof's biggest hit INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Overture by the WhoIn the tradition of symphonic music, the Who began their rock opera Tommy with this overture.

Sean and Paul are thrilled to welcome to the pod one Stuart Tosh, the ‘man at the back' who would join drummer Paul Burgess to share honours on 10cc percussion duties live and in the studio from 1977 to 1983.   But to describe Stuart as ‘10cc drummer' is akin to the tip of a musical iceberg, and this chat illustrates that!  There is so, so much more to discuss...  The first section focuses on one of the podcasters' beloved ‘70s bands: Pilot. Were they the Scottish 10cc, or were 10cc the English Pilot?  Discuss. ;- )  We talk about Stuart's musical beginnings in Scotland via EMI records, his discovery of the talent and technology being nurtured at Craighall Studios in Edinburgh, recording at Abbey Road and in Canada, and his whirlwind three albums and promo tours with his Pilot bandmates.  It's a treat to hear these stories (as well as some of their criminally underrated songs)!   His 10cc accounts are just as fascinating. We talk about his thoughts on members of the band, some extraordinary gigging adventures and of course special focus on one of his rare co-writes and lead vocals… The three of us compare muso notes on the unsung gem that is Reds in My Bed!   We had real fun delving further into Stuart's fascinating career, with some wonderful snapshots of his time working with Alan Parsons (as producer and band member), Camel, Cliff Richard, Rick Fenn and numerous other luminaries.  The great inter-connectedness of the 70s-70s music scenes is something that never fails to gobsmack us.

IT'S EPISODE 15!! Today I sit down with the incredibly talented British Photographic artist Kerry Curl to discuss the powerhouse British artist that is TRACEY EMIN. To many, Emin needs no introduction. The baptised ‘Bad Girl' of the art world, Tracey is associated with the group of artists known as the YBAs (Young British Artist) who took the London art scene by storm in the Late 1980s and 1990s! Emin, like her fellow YBAs, caused shockwaves across the art world not only through her varied use of materials but her tackling of ‘taboo' subjects such as mental health, abortion, rape and grief. Sit back and relax as Kerry and I discuss Emin's famous unmade bed, her savvy business women style and a VERY interesting article about Tracey's Neon Sculpture and large Installation ‘I want my time with you.' To mark the 100th anniversary of women over 30 getting the vote in the UK we have a themed programme looking at the art that was created alongside the suffrage campaign and we celebrate the contribution of female artists. For the last two weeks we've been asking Front Row listeners to nominate their favourite art work by a woman. Jenny Éclair and Rosie Fletcher come into the studio to champion their picks in a head to head choosing Tracey Emin's My Bed and Nora Ephron's script for When Harry Met Sally respectively. In Spring 1907 the first suffragette play opened at the Royal Court - Votes for Women by Elizabeth Robins. This rarely performed play is being revived by the New Vic in Newcastle-under-Lyme and we speak to adaptor and director of the production Theresa Heskins about whether the play has relevance today. Annie Swynnerton was a suffragist and the first woman to be elected to the Royal Academy of Art. As a retrospective of her work prepares to open at Manchester Art Gallery, Charlotte Keatley gets a sneak preview and explains Swynnerton's significance. Performance poet Kat Francois reads and discusses a poem commissioned by Front Row to mark 100 years since women got the vote. Presenter: Kirsty Lang Producer: Hannah Robins.
