Etter å ha utholdt omgang med fiskespisende, lavvokste og skitne striler og andre vestlendinger på øyer og skjær langs kysten og i de bratteste fjordarmene, formelig stråler de av glede over utsynet ved Vangsvatnet med store, grønne enger og gårdsbruk. Her møter de høyreiste og staute mennesker, som hentet fra sagaene, som spiser kjøtt og drikker ferskmelk. Som den franske adelsmannen La Tocnaye merket seg i 1799 om vossingene: «Disse vil absolutt ikke blandes med horderne, som bor nærmere byen, og de er da også atskillig mer sympatiske. De bor i en dal som er både vakker og ganske fruktbar, og de virker på langt nær så simple som fiskeeterne ved kysten.» For La Tocnaye var vossingene en forsmak på de behagelige og siviliserte østlendingene, i sterk kontrast til «de gale fiskeeterne på den andre siden av fjellet». Er vossingen et vestlandsk unntak? Eller er de Vestlandets kjerne? Ikke er de hardinger, ikke er de sogninger og de er i hvert fall ikke bergensere, men hva er de da? En voldsom selvtillit virker de uansett å ha.
