Nick and Angela welcome a fashion icon to Dish HQ. Born in Pennsylvania, Billy Porter was always destined for greatness. In 1992 he won the TV show Star Search, scooping the $100,000 prize ahead of a very young Britney Spears. He took his talent to Broadway and in 2013 won a Tony Award for his portrayal of Lola in Kinky Boots. In 2018, Billy played Pray Tell in the BBC2 series Pose, a role that earned him critical acclaim and a Primetime Emmy Award. He released his memoir, Unprotected, in 2021. Billy Porter is currently starring in Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club in London, alongside Marisha Wallace as Sally Bowles. Nick mixes a fiery lime margarita for Billy, while Angela whips up a delicious Greek chicken with orzo. Our trio sip champagne with their meal, a le mesnil blanc de blanc grand cru brut nv, chosen by the experts at Waitrose. Billy Porter is up there with the most entertaining guests we've ever had on Dish. He's only been in the UK a few months, but he has some thoughts… On customer service at Christmastime and British cooks' ‘subtle' approach to seasoning.

Embark on a journey to the heart of Oregon's Willamette Valley, where the vines are more than just plants - they are the storytellers of the earth, the sun, and the seasons. In this episode of the Weinnotes podcast, I sit down with Tom Caruso, the visionary behind Pray Tell Wines. Our conversation is like uncorking a bottle of his finest - it unfolds with layers of passion, history, and a deep connection to the land.Tom's story is a tapestry woven from threads of memory, tradition, and innovation. As the grandson of a wine enthusiast, his roots run deep, tracing back to childhood days spent with his grandfather. This connection to his past is not just nostalgic; it's the bedrock of his philosophy. Tom's approach to winemaking is a dance between honoring tradition and embracing modernity - a harmonious blend that is evident in every bottle of Pray Tell. Our discussion dives into the unique challenges and triumphs of the 2023 harvest. Tom recounts the whirlwind of picking grapes in just four days, a testament to his adaptability and commitment to capturing the essence of each Harvest. His description of this process is like poetry, with words painting a picture of the vineyard bustling with activity, the air filled with anticipation and the earthy scent of ripe grapes. The beauty of Pray Tell Wines isn't just in the bottles but also in the stories behind them. Tom shares his creative process, where each label is an artwork reflecting the wine's character and his personal journey. His Gamay and Pinot Noir blend, inspired by childhood memories of capturing fireflies, symbolizes the magic trapped in each bottle, waiting to be released with every pour.As we taste his wines, Tom's descriptions are vivid and evocative. He speaks of color, not just in the wine but in its flavors, painting a sensory canvas that tantalizes the imagination. His wines are a symphony of taste, with each varietal contributing its unique note to create a harmonious blend. Our conversation is more than an interview; it's a voyage into the soul of Pray Tell Wines. It's about the connection of family, the passion for the craft, and the love for the land that gives life to the vineyard. It was Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS and The Actor's Fund that taught an entire generation how to activate. I was always activated, I have no other choice, I don't know anything else.” - Billy Porter Billy Porter. Need I say anything else? An icon, mother, a trailblazer, an Emmy, Tony, and Grammy winner… and here's what we talk about in this incredible episode: Incredible and inspiring stories of rejection in auditions Facing racism in the industry Saying ‘No' and seeing what that did to his career Creating Lola in Kinky Boots Not working for 12 years and coming back Prepping for his new tour The Black Mona Lisa Tour: Volume One This episode is chock full of deeply personal insight, first hand stories, unabashed truth regarding the industry and Billy's life. It doesn't matter if you are an artist or not – this conversation is full of life lessons that will just make you an overall better human.  Billy Porter is a Grammy, Emmy, and Tony Award winner. Porter began his music career in 1997 with the release of his self-titled (aka Untitled) debut album which spawned the Top 10 "Bubbling Under" single, "Show Me," and the monster ballad, "Love Is On The Way," which also appeared at the pivotal moment in the film, "First Wives Club." He went on to release "At the Corner of Broadway + Soul" (2005), "Billy's Back on Broadway" (2014), and "The Soul of Richard Rodgers" (2017) featuring Pentatonix, India.Arie, Leslie Odom Jr. and Cynthia Erivo, among others. Porter scored his first #1 with "Love Yourself" in 2019 on the US Dance Club Songs Chart. He followed that up with his 2020 reimagining of the legendary Buffalo Springfield anthem, "For What It's Worth," and a fierce collab with The Shapeshifters on "Finally Ready." 2021 saw Porter covering Juliet Roberts club classic "Caught in The Middle" for Red Hot + Free, which supports underserved communities afflicted with HIV/AIDS. He was also enlisted by multiplatinum international superstar Jessie J for "I Want Love." And he delivered a magical turn on Earth, Wind, and Fire's iconic "Shining Star" as Fab G, the Fairy Godmuva, in the 2021 remake of "Cinderella." Porter is a veteran of the theater (Miss Saigon, Angels in America, Grease), and a two time Tony(r) winner, including "Best Leading Actor in a Musical" for Kinky Boots in 2013 and "Best Musical" as a producer for A Strange Loop in 2022. He has also received a GRAMMY(r) for the Kinky Boots Official Soundtrack in the category of "Best Musical Theater Album" in 2014. Porter took home the EMMY(r) Award for "Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series" in 2019 for his work as Pray Tell on Pose, making history as being the first openly gay man to do so. Time Magazine named him one of the "100 Most Influential People" of 2020. Billy released his highly anticipated memoir, "Unprotected," in October 2021. His directorial film debut, "Anything's Possible," dropped Summer 2022 to much acclaim. Now, Billy kicks off his next chapter in music, his first love, with new single “Baby Was A Dancer” arriving March 24th. @thebillyporter “Lin Manuel Miranda changed everything for me and I'm ten years older than him. The internet cracked open a space for the young people to understand their worth. I did not understand my worth early on – I did not understand that the stories could and should come from me. Who could tell the Black, Queer stories better than me? The audacity to understand that and know that and then step into the fullness of it. And that's what I spent my 30's trying to do!” - Billy Porter Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Speaker: Rev. Mark Mueller Scripture Focus: Acts 16:9–15, Revelation 21:9–14, Revelation 21:21-27, & John 16:23–33 Service Summary: The disciples thought they knew what Jesus was saying, but it was before Easter, and they could not understand. They would, “in that day,” that is, after Jesus' victory and the Spirit's gift of faith. Now we with them know that He has overcome the world, all opposition, and even death itself. John's vision in Revelation depicts a perfect Jerusalem, clear and beautiful, with the Lamb as its lamp. Anticipating such nearness of God, in this our day we can pray, asking for whatever we need, confident of our Father's hearing. In the Reading from Acts, Paul has to tell everyone about his Easter joy, and the Lord opens Lydia's heart. She is baptized and opens her home for Paul and Luke to use to tell others. With the clarity of our Spirit-given Easter joy, we know, pray, and tell!

When Pope Francis dropped a bombshell decree restricting the traditional Latin Mass, Fr. Anthony Ruff, OSB, had two immediate reactions: shock at its severity, and then heartbreak and concern for the people who attend the Mass. Francis' decree, Traditionis Custodes, seeks to phase out the traditional Latin Mass, says Fr. Ruff, in a noble attempt to bring all Roman Catholics back together around the altar of the reformed Mass envisioned by Vatican II. But that could take decades, and the pain that traditional Catholics are feeling right now is real. Gloria and Fr. Ruff discuss the history of the Mass and why the pursuit of a pre-Vatican II church is misguided and dangerous. A Benedictine monk of Saint John's Abbey in Collegeville, MN, Fr. Ruff teaches liturgy and liturgical music, and directs Gregorian Chant. He blogs at Pray Tell. Support The Gloria Purvis Podcast by subscribing to America Magazine! On this week's episode of Kickin' & Streamin' Graham and Jocelyn review FX Original series Pose, a show starring M.J. Rodriguez, Billy Porter, Dominique Jackson, Ryan Jamaal Swain, and Indya Moore. The series was created by screenwriter, director, and producer Ryan Murphy. Murphy is best known for creating and co-creating heavy hitter series including Nip Tuck, Glee, American Horror Story, American Crime Story among others. Jocelyn describes the series as deeply educational and eye-opening. Graham & Jocelyn discuss how much the series shed light on the reality of the life of LGBTQ folks in the 80's at the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Jocelyn expresses her amazement at the members of the gay community's ingenuity of creating "houses" as a safe space, a place of refuge for young homeless and destitute LGBT people to prevent them from dying as victim of hate crimes and other dangers they were exposed to as a result of their sexual orientation. Jocelyn expresses how learning about the Ball Culture, all the details, the history, and the kindness the gay community showed to one another during those times is enough to renew her faith in humanity. The co-host then discuss each of the main cast members and their respective characters. Graham and Jocelyn praise M.J. Rodriguez's absolutely magnificent portrayal of Blanca Evangelista, a HIV positive "house mother" who is committed to bettering the lives of each one of her children, and she is particularly committed to ensuring Damon (Ryan Jamaal Swain) lives up to his potential as a ballet dancer. The two co-hosts then discuss Billy Porter's portrayal of Pray Tell who is the Emcee at the nightly balls where each house compete in a runway-style contest of a variety of categories. The remaining characters and actors are discussed at length and in detail. Graham and Jocelyn point out the importance of seeing the art in the series, the creativity, the braveness of individuals who in spite of all the rejection, discrimination, and mistreatment they received from the outside world, they decided to live their true lives, their true identity, regardless of the consequences and ignorance of the times. Enjoy this episode, and please don't forget to tell us what you think if you've watched Pose, or when you watch it.
