What happens when a young man escapes a sanitarium only to be thrust back into the vortex of his traumatic circus upbringing? Welcome to "Screams and Streams," where Mike, Chad, and Sam unravel the eerie tapestry of Alejandro Jodorowsky's "Santa Sangre." We confront the film's confusing yet intriguing narrative, its whirlwind of bizarre characters, and its hauntingly beautiful chaos that leaves viewers questioning reality itself.Listeners can expect a deep dive into the film's timeless and outdated elements, from its unique special effects and poignant music to its questionable ethical themes and pacing. The trio doesn't shy away from critiquing the movie's audacious use of religious symbolism and disturbing circus acts that don't quite hold up today. As we dissect the surreal moments that define "Santa Sangre," we engage in a spirited conversation about its impact on modern audiences and the legacy of its captivating strangeness. For those curious about the production nuances, budget constraints, and cultural tributes woven into the film, we've got that covered too. Get ready for an intellectually stimulating journey through Roger Ebert's critical insights, symbolic elephants, masked wrestlers, and more. Whether you're a seasoned cinephile or a newcomer to Jodorowsky's haunting world, this episode of "Screams and Streams" promises a revealing look at a film that challenges conventional horror and beckons you to explore its surreal depths. In this week's episode, we're covering a movie that we've frankly been putting off for like two months now with the 1990 supernatural (?) thriller (??) "Demon Wind." Special topics for your consideration include: running at full speed out of the gate and being unable to maintain that pace for any amount of time, lying about the dates of milestone events, He-Man lights, wizards, pudding, and what if anything a demon wind actually is. As far as horror goes, 1990 was an absolute mess as evidenced by the high highs and low lows of Episode 28- "Child's Play 2," Episode 97- "IT," Episode 132- "Tales from the Darkside," Episode 167- "Puppet Master 2," Episode 184- "Tremors," Episode 194- "Santa Sangre," Episode 320- "Nightbreed," and Episode 335- "Frankenhooker." Let's face it: horror fans are, as a group, a little bit obsessive. When we sink our teeth into something we do not do it barely or easily, we take a big, honkin' bite. If we become infatuated with a director, we want to see every film they've made, read a book about them, hear people talk about them, watch documentaries about them, and so on. And the same is true for national horror cinemas, regional American horror cinemas, important eras, actors, subgenres, and the like. And in recent years, a handful of visionary producers of physical media have recognized an opportunity in our longing and have invented and are currently inundating us with boxed sets. These comprehensive, exhaustive, wonderful monsters have become a gravitational center point for our genre. But just a handful of years ago they mostly didn't exist, or were announced only every few years. Nowadays, we get several per year from companies like Severin, Vinegar Syndrome, Indicator, Arrow, and Scream! Factory, just to name a few. So we figured it was time for Discover the Horror to take a long look at the history and impact of these monolithic pieces of film history. Movies mentioned: 100 Years of Horror, Abby (1974), Alien (1979), Beast of Blood (1970), Beyond Dream's Door (1989), Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970), The Black Cat (1934), Blade in the Dark (1983), Blood of Ghastly Horror (1967), The Body Snatcher (1945), Bride of Frankenstein (1935), Carnival Magic (1983), Carnival of Blood (1970), Cat People (1942), City of the Living Dead (1980), Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (1972), The Chooper (1971), Creature with the Atomic Brain (1955), Curse of the Cat People (1944), Dawn of the Mummy (1981), Day of the Animals (1977), Deathdream (1974), Demons (1985), Demons 2 (1986), Deranged (1974), The Devil-Doll (1936), Dracula (1931), Emanuelle in Bangkok (1976), The Eroticist (1972), Fiend with the Electronic Brain (1967), Final Exam (1990), Flesh for Frankenstein (1973), The Fly (1958), Four Skulls of Jonathan Drake (1959), Frankenstein (1931), Freaks (1932), Friday the 13th (1980), The Ghost Ship (1943), The Giant Claw (1957), The Godfather (1972), Godzilla (1954), Grizzly (1976), Gruesome Twosome (1967), Hellraiser (1987), Help Me . . . CW: Sexual content, pornography, incest, violence, consent, sex work, frank discussion of human anatomy, murder, matricide, urine We conclude our coverage of 1979's Caligula with special guest Antonio Palacios of The Cultworthy Cinema Podcast! We hear more about the wild world of 5-star Amazon reviews, beg for you to sign Joe's petition to get Caligula into Kingdom Hearts instead of the one to get a 4K release of this film, allow Jack to continue his awareness campaign for Plague Dogs, explore why it's important to make sure everyone on your set is aware of and consenting to what is happening and to know when/when not to invite family to set, touch on the work of Gore Vidal (giving Joe a chance to reference The Venture Bros), look into more of Tinto Brass's history and works, get into the nitty gritty on Bob "The Gooch" Guccione and Penthouse Magazine, manifest one of Jack's Grant Morrison references to bring up The Filth, discuss the importance of extras that really stick out, pitch Santa Sangre but with sex carnies, cover some of Caligula's actual history and acknowledge the issues with that scholarship, reinforce the importance of having breakfast, briefly cover the trouble Nero got into on tour, emphasize the importance of letting artists be artists, and continue our bewilderment at the utter lack of professionalism on spy job sites in 19 CE. And, of course, we try to fix this decidedly unsexy mess of a film. Strap in and enjoy. #pissbae Podcasts Plugged In This Episode: Doom Generation (@DoomGenPod on Twitter); The Cultworthy Cinema Podcast, The Cultworthy Classic, and The Milf & Me (@thecultworthy on Twitter) Things mentioned in this episode: Caligula, Tiberius, Nero, Rome, Malcolm McDowell, Helen Mirren, Tinto Brass, Gore Vidal, Bob Guccione, Penthouse Magazine, Penthouse Publishing, Kingdom Hearts, Goofy, Madam Kitty (1976), The Venture Bros., Grant Morrison, The Filth, Santa Sangre (1989), Golden Hour, Jeffrey Toobin, Zoom, Pulp Fiction (1994), Leon The Professional (1994), Paul Verhoeven, Phil Tippett, Final Draft, Goldschlager, Joe D'Amato, Erotic Nights of the Living Dead (1980) --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/derazzled/support
After a years-long absence from the world of filmmaking, Alejandro Jodorowsky made his return to movies with the help of Italian producer Claudio Argento. Their collaborative effort, 1989's SANTA SANGRE, is often considered Jodorowsky's best work. But its journey to the screen was not always an easy one. In this, our final episode in our series covering the films of Alejandro Jodorowsky, we'll take a detailed look at the story behind the production of the controversial director's most accessible film. Theme Song: "There's Still a Little Bit of Time, If We Hurry and I Mean Hurry" by Slasher Film Festival Strategy. This episode was written, produced and edited by Gary Horne, Justin Bishop, and Todd A. Davis.
A young man is confined in a mental hospital. Through a flashback we see that he was traumatized as a child, when he and his family were circus performers: he saw his father cut off the arms of his mother, a religious fanatic and leader of the heretical church of Santa Sangre (“Holy Blood”), and then commit suicide. Back in the present, he escapes and rejoins his surviving and armless mother. This week G-Baby and the Usual Suspect Steve welcome a very special guest, the astutely articulate and affable arbiter of authenticity, Ran-Diesel from the Straight Chilling podcast to discuss a midnight fever dream Psycho meets LSD tableau, Santa Sangre from 1989. Join us as we ask the question is it a good idea to give the residents of an asylum cocaine and prostitutes? Or is it a GREAT idea? From visuals so psychedelic you might think you've dropped acid to mommy issues that would make even Freud uncomfortable, this gringo circus runs the gamut. Let's wax this armless porpoise. https://linktr.ee/waxtheporpoise #film #fenix #holyblood #jodorowsky #waxit Huge thanks to the one and only Randew for joining us to discuss this one, the pleasure was all ours. The boys are back after a little break to talk about one of the greatest filmmakers ever, Alejandro Jodorowsky. They will be taking a look at Fando y Lis, El Topo, The Holy Moutain, and Santa Sangre.
In this week's episode, we're discussing the brand new 2023 independent film "Skinamarink." Special topics for your consideration include: um, you know, saying some stuff...about stuff? Talking about corners, walls, ceilings, and the feet of children, trying to get a foothold in someone else's nightmare, and a very weird personalized license plate. We've done a couple avant garde/arthouse style horror movies in the past. May we suggest Episode 115- "Hausu," Episode 194- "Santa Sangre," or Episode 240- "Mandy"? Also, does everything Lucio Fulci ever made count? If so, boy have we done a lot of those. Support us at patreon.com/werewolfambulance where you can hear us discuss an action movie each month. We've been killing a lot of bits on this show lately, but that cockroach Alejandro Jodorowsky has somehow hung around for another Jodorowsky January. This year, the guys discuss a film Roger Ebert called "one of the greatest" horror films of all time. Santa Sangre, another absurd, Freudian carny nightmare from the mind of the GOAT. Mother's Arms: Alejandro Jodorowsky's Santa Sangre On this week's episode of WatchThis w/RickRamos, Ibrahim & I continue our descent into the terror of Horror Cinema as we celebrate moving closer and closer to All Hallow's Eve. For this week's selection we go against the norm and travel to Mexico for Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky's Santa Sangre (1989). A film that needs to be seen in order to be believed, Ibrahim & I are thrilled to discuss this Surreal Masterpiece. The less written the better so take a watch, follow it with a listen, and experience one of the great visionary expressions of Cinema. We think you'll have a good time. Questions, Comments, Complaints, & Suggestions can be sent to gondoramos@yahoo.com. Many Thanks.
After the worldwide success of SANTA SANGRE, Jodorowsky was inundated with offers to make horror films, but he found himself more interested in - for the first time - working with a large budget and big stars. His opportunity came in the form of producer Alexander Salkind, who approached Jodo to direct his wife script for a project called THE RAINBOW THIEF, starring Omar Sharif, Peter O'Toole and Christopher Lee. The result (nearly) ended Alejandro Jodorowsky's directing career, with the film barely being release before being dumped onto VHS in the US four years after its completion. But is the final result truly disaster? On this episode of JODOWOWSKY we're breaking down the complicated history and tangled legacy of THE RAINBOW THIEF and asking what the heck went wrong. We also pay tribute to the late Cristóbal Jodorowsky, and discuss Jonathan Ross's 1990 episode of his program For One Week Only devoted to Jodorowsky. Check it out!
Welcome to Week 2 where we explore Slashers (questionable) and Found Footage gems! We talk a little garbage when it comes to Hounds of Love, geek out over a weird armless mom who throws acid on her cheating lover's junk, and Stef gets flustered over her (rightful) adoration for young Ted Raimi. This week's showrunner & editor is Stef (@witchxpudding), who is joined by L (@nocturnical) & Mel (@heda_mel). Rough timestamps: See for me, 1:25; Santa Sangre, 7:15; Hounds of Love, 18:55; 31, 25:45; V/H/S/94, 34:20; Hell House LLC, 41:35; & Intruder, 48:25.
