    90 Second Devotion - Heart Burn - Aired 02-17-2017

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 20, 2017 3:33

I’ve been writing some silly songs to play on Follow The Son Radio and to create a Christian comedy show. See, God talks to everyone a little differently and with me, he always gives me these silly and witty ways to spread his message. One idea came to me after observing the different way people worship the Lord. There are those who have a very internal and quiet reflection when they’re close to God. And there’s nothing wrong with that. But I see some people who get physically caught up in the Holy Spirit and can’t help but shout and jump for joy. And that gave me an idea. God showed me that the Holy Spirit can be laid out like a buffet, free for the taking, but some people pick and choose at what they want to take. I said to myself, if anyone really had a taste of the Holy Spirit, they wouldn’t want to stop eating! Shoot, they’d even be begging for heartburn! And that’s where the idea for this song came about. So without further adieu, here is my Follow The Son Radio original entitled, “Heart Burn”. Hope you enjoy!

    90 Second Devotion - Bad Things - Aired 02-16-2017

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 17, 2017 1:35

“Why do bad things happen to good people?” We’ve heard this question asked in different ways for years on end. Sometimes people ask this as a way to question the existence of God. It’s a legitimate question to ask, however. If God loves us, why does he let tragic things happen to His children? See, God created us in His own image, but He intentionally separated us from being able to understand things on His level. He even told Moses that merely a glimpse of God is enough to kill us. Exodus 33:20, “And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me and live.” God even tried to protect us from the tree of knowledge, but we all know what happened there. So, we come back to the question, why do bad things happen to good people? Well, if we as mortal men can’t fully comprehend God, we definitely can’t comprehend His motivations. Everything God does has a reason behind it. I know that’s not something that someone who has just suffered a tragedy wants to hear, but what’s the common thread behind most all tragedies? They all bring us closer to God. And that’s what it’s all about in the first place, isn’t it? I know when a child dies or a baby is born with deformities it may seem that God doesn’t care, but God takes care of all that. It’s our job to get out of the way, draw nigh to Him & trust God.

90 Second Devotion - Song of Solomon - Aired 02-15-2017

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 16, 2017 1:36

You don’t hear many devotions on the Song of Solomon. Now I can’t explain the book to you in 90 seconds, but if you’re married or engaged to be married, open up your Bible and check it out. It’s a perfect explanation of the feelings we should have toward a spouse. Now, for those of you who don’t realize it, this is an entire book in the Bible devoted to marital sex. Yes, sex. I think it’s probably a hard pill to swallow for most Christians to admit this book IS a part of the Bible, but God never intended sex to be something that we never talk about. In fact by not having an open and honest conversation about sex with our young adults, we are missing an important opportunity to ensure that our young people don’t get swayed by the devil and end up doing something they regret the rest of their lives. Sex is a gift from God and should be a Holy union between a husband and a wife. It’s a way to both express love and devotion to the one God has blessed you to be with and obviously a way to “be fruitful and multiply” as the God commands of us in Genesis 1:28. So, to those who are engaged, newlywed married but never read it, take time to read Song of Solomon. It’s a tiny little book squeezed between Ecclesiastes and Isaiah. Read it prayerfully with your partner and I’m sure God will enrich your marriage greatly.

Computers get tired just like us. If you have a desktop, laptop or smartphone you may have noticed that sometimes things don’t work as well as normal or things freeze up. When that happens, most all computers have an emergency reboot. This gives your computer a chance to clean everything up and restart without all the complications. Sound familiar? God has given us all an emergency reboot. No matter how badly things are going with your life or how many bad things have happened to you in your walk with God, there’s always an easy reset. Simply, stop and turn back to Him. Psalm 34:17 says, “The righteous cry, and the LORD hearth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.” And a good follow up is Isaiah 40:31 “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." If you know computers you know that most PC’s have a reboot called “Control - Alt - Delete”. If you’ve found yourself in despair, let’s make this part of your prayer to the Lord. Just earnestly bow down to God. Ask him to take CONTROL. He’ll show you an ALTernate path. And God will DELETE your past. Once you’ve been completely shut down, God will restart your life with a clean slate. Remember CONTROL+ALT+DELETE & let God guide your reboot.

90 Second Devotion - Wait For It! - Aired 02-13-2017

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 14, 2017 1:36

Ready! Aim! Wait for it! This thought that came to my heart is that, sometimes as Christians we get a little too impatient with the world. We live in a 21st century world where things happen at a breakneck pace. If we have to wait more than 3 minutes for a burger or 30 minutes for an oil change, we feel our time is wasted. In fact, a study from Kissmetrics.com says that 40% of people who have to wait more than 3 seconds for a website to load, abandon their search altogether…3 seconds! How did we get so impatient?! This type of impatience seems to have spilled over into our Christian life. When we pray earnestly to God, we have to understand we still play by His rules. God hears our prayers. 1 John 5:14 says, “that if we ask anything according to his will, he heareth us.” But God doesn’t work on our schedule. The answer to your prayer may be yes, or it may be no. Sometimes, the answer is yes, eventually. Olympians who go before the starting gun are charged with a false start which can disqualify them from competing. So if you have something that you’ve been bringing to the Lord in prayer, stay patient. Don’t get charged with a false start with God. He hears your cry and in His time, you will know the answer.

My car needs an oil change. Now I could just ignore it and keep driving, but eventually that car will sputter and spit and break down on the side of the road. That’s the same way we are with our walk with God. When we’re saved, it’s like getting a brand new life! Everything runs great, smells great and looks good. But over time things begin to wear down. Those words you swore you’d never say again, the alcohol you swore you’d never drink again, that anger you swore you’d never show again….all these things start creeping back into your life. So, what’s the best maintenance you can give to the spiritual body? The main thing is prayer. That’s like the gas in your tank. Keep yourself prayed up and communicating with God. Also, study the Word of God. Take some time to change your oil and read the Bible! You may read or understand something that you never saw before. Finally, we all have to do our part to tell others about Jesus. This is like getting a set of new tires. When you see someone’s face light up after they come to know the Lord, you’ll have better traction do drive down that highway and tell it again. So how’s your spiritual maintenance? Is your spiritual body running smoothly? Or are you almost broken down? You can work on that right now if you need to….Me? I’ve got to go get into my outside clothes and go change that oil in my car!

"As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” That’s from Joshua 24:15. This has become a slogan posted on placards in houses all around the world. But what does it mean to have a house which serves the Lord? Joshua is speaking to the tribes of Israel and reminding them of all the good things that the Lord had done for them thus far. He said that their fathers had served other gods, but he urged them to put those gods away and worship the Lord. The full verse says, “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” So, Joshua is basically giving the “as long as you live under my roof” speech. Really, a house that serves the Lord isn’t going to be perfect, but those who dwell in that house should strive to please Him and respect his authority. We need to claim our houses for God. Pray that God helps you keep all evils away and if you have children, pray double hard for them. By keeping the Lord as master in our house, we will be stronger stewards to the rest of the world.

In Daniel, chapter 3 we find the story of King Nebuchadnezzar. The king had made a golden image for his people to worship instead of God. Now at the time, all the people of the land fell down and worshipped and bid the king live forever. Why would they do this? Well, just like many of us today, they were probably frightened by the king’s authority. (However, if you skip over to Matthew 10:28, we’re reassured not to fear someone who only has the ability to kill the body, but to fear him which is able to kill both body & soul.) Now when the King learned that Shadrach Meshach and Abednego wouldn’t bow down, he gave these boys an ultimatum: kneel and worship or else he would throw them into the fiery furnace. He wanted them to know that HE was the only one that could save them from their fate. But they respectfully declined saying that God would deliver them out. And in verse 18 they add "But if not, be it known here, O King that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.” So they knew it could be a death sentence but they stuck with their faith in the Lord to deliver them. The 3 boys went into the fire and when the king’s men looked in, 4 MEN were walking around, unfazed by the flames. If you haven’t read it, or if you haven’t read it in a while, I urge you to go to Daniel Chapter 3 and give it a good read.

After a long day of work there's nothing I like more than to sit down on my couch and unwind. It's safe, it's predictable and I get to recharge the batteries for a little while. But let me ask you a question, and be honest with yourself: have you ever had that feeling in church? Now I'm guilty of this too: you get to church, sit down and decide, you know what? I'm going to just sit here and tune the preacher out for an hour and relax. Church was never meant to be a passive experience. You should be engaged and you should be feeling something. If not joy, then conviction. Checking out and letting your mind wander throughout service is exactly what the devil wants you to do. The book of Zephaniah Ch. 1 says that God will “utterly consume all things from the land, both man and beast. And on the day of judgement he will come for them that worship the host of heaven and them that are turned back from the Lord, and those that have not sought the Lord, nor enquired of him.” The day of the Lord is coming, whether you’re ready or not. Don’t get too comfortable with your walk with God. There’s always something more that we can do to help spread His Good News! "We will not serve thy gods" Daniel 3:18 In Daniel, chapter 3 we find the story of King Nebuchadnezzar. The king had made a golden image for his people to worship instead of God. Now at the time, all the people of the land fell down and worshipped and bid the king live forever. Why would they do this? Well, just like many of us today, they were probably frightened by the king’s authority. (However, if you skip over to Matthew 10:28, we’re reassured not to fear someone who only has the ability to kill the body, but to fear him which is able to kill both body & soul.) With the crazy weather we've had in recent years I've read a lot of stories about wildfires that have broken out in some of our national forests all around the country. A wildfire can be destructive and clear our everything in its path. That got me thinking about our relationship with God. When I was first saved it was an amazing feeling but over time, as the devil began to work on me the feeling faded and worldly things began to distract me from the Lord. However we should always strive to strengthen our relationship with God over time. Hebrews Chapter 5 talks about how we are newly saved we must stay on the milk until we grow up and it's time to take up the meat. The same goes when Christ begins to light a fire in your heart. At first it's a flame the size of a candle. Seen but not dangerous. Over time, if we feed the fire with prayer and study it will grow to a ranging inferno within our hearts and just like a wildfire that purges the countryside, all the earthly intrusions in our soul will be purged if we let the fire consume us. And once we've been purged, just like the saplings that grow in the woods after a wildfire, we can begin to build a stronger life with Christ as the foundation.

Being smart never hurt anybody. In fact, I think most parents would want their children to do the best that they can in school. We have to live on this earth until the Lord comes back, and I think it would be best to not have a world of uneducated folks walking around performing operations and fixing bridges, am I right? But don’t neglect the education that is most important to you beyond the 70 or 80 years that God has given us on this earth, according to Psalm 90:10. Ephesians 6:11 tells us to “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” In short, this and the following verses tells us that in order to be a strong and well-educated follower of Christ we need to study and build up our faith so that when we are out in the world interacting with others that we can both fight the devil’s attacks and defend our faith to those who may not know the Lord. Think of it this way: you wouldn’t trust a lawyer who doesn’t know the law. You wouldn’t trust a doctor in the operating room who doesn’t know the human body. You wouldn’t fly on an airplane built by someone who never studied aviation. So why would a lost person listen to someone who doesn’t know the Word of God? Oh me!

Boy, it seems like we never have enough time for anything, do we? 24 hours in a day is just not enough, right? Well, did you ever stop to think that TIME is the Lord’s domain? He chooses to make as little or as much of it as He feels. In fact, time as we know it is a human construct. Don’t believe me? Take a seat…I’m about to put faith and science in the same thought! So, 2 Peter 3:8 says, “But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” So we already know, here, that time is different for God. Now, without going into hours of detail, Einstein and some of the best astrophysicists in the world all claim that if you were to be able to travel at the speed of light, TIME, from your perspective would essentially stop. So basically, science agrees that on a higher plane, time is different. The Bible tells us in 1 Corinthians 15:52 that God’s return will happen “in the twinkling of an eye” which really is a short amount of time, for earth standards. But for God, who knows? Perhaps the twinkling has already begun. So, if you’re waiting on God for something, keep waiting. He will give you an answer in due time. One thing I can tell you for sure, though. If you don’t know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, pray now…before EARTH time, becomes GOD time.

The Bible says several times that we are to FEAR God. But I think that the translation of this world has been lost over the centuries of evolution to the English language. Let me try to break it down for everyone a little bit here. The “fear” the Bible is referring to is not like the fear you have watching a scary movie or when you hear a rustling in the dark woods. The translated English word “Fear” is from the Hebrew “Yirah” (Yir-ah’) which is defined as awesome, extreme reverence. So when the Bible tells us in Proverbs 1:7 “The FEAR of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” Or in Matthew 10:28 where the Lord tells us “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather FEAR him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell,” the Bible is not telling us to be scared, but rather to stand in awe of the greatness and power of almighty God. The most spiritual and God-fearing humans among us, no matter how hard they try, cannot begin to even imagine the power and glory of God. That’s how great our God is. And that’s how great Heaven will be to those who choose to believe in Jesus Christ as the Son of God and Savior of the Earth. It’s impossible for us to comprehend it, but if you accept Jesus you’re saved, one day you’ll know first-had why we FEAR God.

“Social Media” Today’s 90-second devotion is a prayer to the Lord to help the division in this country. Lord, social media has become an evil wedge not only in this country, but across the world. Lord, we know from prophecies that these things must come to pass before your return, which we all trust is very near, but I pray to you to help all Christians, those of us who claim to know you and who have their names written in the Lamb’s Book of Life, help us resist the devil’s attempts to splinter us within our own faith. Luke 11:17 says, “But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth.” Jesus, help us, your followers, realize that we need to unite together against a common enemy, Satan. Help us to realize and see the division that is happening now between ourselves perpetrated by the rise of social media which has allowed our own politics to get in the way of our clear thinking and brotherhood. Lord, you yourself told us “Whosoever will” and there was no caveat to that. Black, white, brown, democrat, republican or card-carrying communist has the same opportunity to be saved as anybody else. Lord, help us to realize these things that divide us are worldly, carnal, frivolous and when we cross over to the spiritual realm they mean absolutely nothing. Jesus help us open our eyes to YOU and close our eyes to our own petty differences. For it’s in your precious, holy name we pray, amen.
