Recently, we gathered some friends, headed out to some public land and put on a 3D archery shoot with a bottle of whiskey on the line for the winner. We discuss what an archery 3D shoot is, the fun of setting up challenging archery shots on public land and how shooting 3D archery targets makes you a better archer. We discuss how setting up friendly competition adds a little pressure to every shot and how much all the participants not only wanted to win the bottle of whiskey but bragging rights until the next event! On this episode, we took the show on the road to Orange County, California to host Hide Iwagami, President of the OC Spearos spearfishing and freediving club. We discuss Hide's introduction to spearfishing and how some early success spearing some prized fish species in Southern California developed his passion for the sport. On this episode the boys recap an epic summer of fishing including big bluefin tuna in our backyard and a trip to Alaska for halibut, salmon and lingcod. Every fisherman has a bucket list of fish they would like to catch. With an unreal volume of bluefin in the local Southern California waters, the boys took a trip to try to break the 100-pound mark and land some big bluefin. And while the local waters continued to produce a bluefin bite like we've never seen, Jason took a trip back up to Alaska to chase another bucket list fish, an Alaskan lingcod. In the fall, the offshore fishing season is full swing with bluefin, yellowfin, dorados and yellowtail all within our local waters. Also, hunting season is here! Mule deer season is fast approaching and upland bird seasons are opening up. We discuss a successful offshore fishing trip chasing yellowfin tuna and go over some tuna recipes that are so good! We also discuss our favorite opening day and a tradition that let's us know that Fall is upon us, the Dove Season opener. On this weeks episode we discuss a recent sportfishing trip aboard The San Diego out of Seaforth Landing in San Diego, California chasing Bluefin Tuna. We discuss the techniques we used fishing for Bluefin including fly-lined bait, sinker or plunker rigs, and flat-fall fishing. On this week's episode we recap a successful dove season opener. Dove season is the first hunting season to open and kicks off the fall. It has become a hunt that we look forward to every year and is definitely one of our favorites. This year was special because we hunted a new area with great friends and the hunt included a little bit of everything from preseason scouting on the Internet, scouting in person and finding what turned out to be an epic spot. We are joined by Amy Tarasi and Zac Palomino to relive the hunt, discuss some recipes and just how good our dove season opener was. We had a lot of fun with this one and we hope you do too!

On this week's episode we interview Lamar "So Salty" Lee. We met Lamar on an offshore fishing trip out of San Diego's Fisherman's Landing on the Condor Sportfishing boat. On the trip, Lamar was constantly getting hooked up and landing fish. Every time he got bit, he kept yelling... "SO SALTY"! His energy was contagious and was someone we needed to talk to. We discuss Lamar's origins into fishing, the trips he's taken around the world chasing fish and his commitment to staying salty! Lamar is one of those underground guys that lives and breathes everything we're all about here on the Free Range Tales.

On this week's episode we discuss the differences between public and private land hunting and share our experiences hunting both. Approximately 640 million acres, about 28% of all of the United States, is public land held in trust for the American people by the federal government for us to access and enjoy. We cover the pros and cons to both public and private land hunting, but the biggest takeaway for us was to get out there and enjoy the resources we have!

On this week's episode we discuss some of the lessons learned spearfishing. Spearfishing is a pursuit filled with plenty of ups and downs. From losing gear, to missed fish... To bringing home a great meal and spending time with good friends... No matter what happens, one things for sure, there's always a story to tell.

Every spring and summer, as the waters off the coast of California warm, they come alive with game fish that move in from the south. We spent the day chasing Dorados and yellowtails and learning about these floating ecosystems and the game fish that hunt and forage around them.
