Reading Animals and Using Decoys with Danny Farris Show Notes: Danny Farris and I sat down to talk about reading animals, using decoys, and a whole lot more. Danny's an experienced hunter in Colorado: he's the owner of Ultimate Predator Gear,  a columnist for Bowhunter magazine and a host for the Hoyt bowhunting podcast, among other things. When it comes to bowhunting – Danny's your guy.   Danny owns a decoy company, so we kicked off by talking about using decoys effectively. Everyone has their own thoughts on decoys, but Danny says they're most effective during the rut. The hormonal changes that go on during the rut make decoys extra effective.    From there, we talked about deer hunting. Danny has a lot of knowledge on how deer behave, so it was great to hear him talk about reading the species. We swapped a few stories about just that – how to read deer in the field, and how to predict their next move. That's easier said than done. We both had a few stories about using decoys during these types of situations on the hunt.    A lot of this comes from your ability to make decisions in high pressure situations. We talked a bit about how we handle those moments. I've gotten pretty good at keeping my cool, but that's another one of those ‘easier said than done' things. “The ability to stay calm enough to make sound decisions,” as Danny calls it, is a huge skill to have for hunters. Getting busted when drawing your bow at an elk or deer within range is one of the most frustrating moments in western hunting. Elk will often hang up in the hang up zone and not present you with a shot. Deer will often bust you in that last moment and getting close isn't easy either. My guest today is Dr Brooks Tiller. Brooks is a doctor of physical therapy and author of The Healthy Hunter – Becoming the Ultimate Predator which is a book about improving, not becoming perfect, but improving your health so that you can live longer and be a mentor and leader to the people you love. Brooks has a unique style of blending two of the things I really love and that’s hunting and become the man that your creator expects you to be. Brooks and I had a great discussion about the foods we put into our bodies and how we can be a bit more mindful and make better choices, we talk about how making a lasting change in our lives simple, but it’s not easy. It’s going to take time and it’s going to take work. Look in the mirror…. That didn’t happen overnight and neither can you undo it overnight, but guys like Brooks provide a ton of really good information on how to eat better and how to exercise smart. We also talk about Brooks’ appearance on American Ninja Warrior and what that whole crazy experience was like, I had an absolute blast having Brooks in the studio and digging into a topic that has really grabbed my attention. On this week's episode we interview Brett Gattoni about his experience learning to hunt, fish and spearfish at a young age. I met Brett on a spearfishing trip down in Mexico, where I quickly realized that he had a knack for always being in the right place at the right time. Brett is a man of many talents and we enjoyed reliving some of his stories growing up learning to dive and hunt. We had a lot of fun with this one and we hope you do too!

In this episode, I talk with Austin and Jason Jones, a father-son hunting team from here in Michigan. They call themselves the Jones Boys Hunting Squad and you can find them on Facebook at @jonesboyshuntingsquad. These two are amazing, Austin is confined to a wheelchair, and even with that, he is one hunting machine. He hunts with a crossbow and with the assistance of his dad, Austin hunts lots of different game animals. Austin looks at his target through the scope of the crossbow and directs his dad in aiming and pulling the trigger at the time Austin tells him too.
